Today I'm talking with Nikita about the importance of support during and after pregnancy. A note from Nikita:Hi, I'm Nikita and I am mummy to two, experienced primary school teacher, mental health first aider, breastfeeding peer supporter and founder of Story Sense and Mumma & Me. I live on the beautiful South Devon coast of England. I was a primary school teacher for 7 years before having my little boy. At this point, I found a love of working with babies and learning about their development. Wanting to keep my teaching close to me, I set up Story Sense which are unique sensory story classes which promote a love of books and stories through engaging and exciting activities which run in the South Hams.Becoming a parent is a daunting time, with so many unknowns. There is so much information out there which can be overwhelming and support can feel hard to accept and reach out for when you are supposed to just 'get on with it.' I created the Mumma & Me Collections to provide support and evidence based information across a whole range of areas from mental health support to 1:1 feeding support, financial support and advice from a professional, key developmental milestones information for your baby or toddler and activity ideas, a range of online baby and toddler classes for you to try at home, music downloads and a singalong to join in with and a friendly and supportive Facebook community where you can continue to ask questions and learn more about you and your developing little one and build a support network of others at the same place on their journey. Nikita's online collections can be found at: https://storysense.vipmembervault.com/You can find more from me here: www.betweenthewaves.co.ukFacebook and Instagram: @betweenthewavespodEmail: betweenthewavespod@gmail.comMy Charity is here:www.connectedhealth.org.ukFacebook: @connectedhealthcharity

Episode 013: How to be your own Superhero

Today I'm talking with Suzy Bashford about creativity and being your own superhero! Suzy is a writer, workshop facilitator and speaker podcaster based in the awesome Scottish Highlands, where she lives with her husband, 2 wee boys and Staffy dog Bramble. Mental health is a specialist subject of her work: she writes regularly for Psychologies magazine, has worked on marketing campaigns for the Mental Health Foundation and is professionally trained in delivering work shops in emotional intelligence and stress management. Suzy has also done talks on her own mental health journey from zero to superhero.Suzy lives a big juicy creative life here in the Highlands, but it wasn't always this way and she wasn't always this happy – in fact 12 years ago Suzy was hospitalised in a mother and baby unit with severe depression after my first son. That's how bleak it was. It's taken concerted effort, big decisions and a recognition that her mental health needs consistent nurturing to get to where she is today (mentally and geographically!). And of course, although yes – wild swimming, mountain biking and long walks in spectacular nature are now a part of her normal week – life isn't always perfect here, either. (But you knew that already, whatever Instagram says, didn't you?).Nurturing creativity is a big part of thriving both personally and professionally. Which is why Suzy has recently set up her company called Big Juicy Creative, which is all about approaching work briefs with a big dollop of big, juicy creativity. Suzy has also just launched  a podcast called Big Juicy Creativity to inspire listeners (and herself!) with ideas on how to nurture a creative mindset towards life. For Suzy, this is key to riding the waves and enjoying the sail, whatever the weather.
