Premenstrual disorders can make life incredibly miserable. Any woman who's struggled with PMS will know that, and I covered that specific issue in the closing episode to Season 5. This episode is a follow-on from that, as I drill down into PMDD – premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Although it occurs in the 2nd half of the cycle, this isn't just a severe form of PMS. It's a hormone-based mood disorder caused by a severe reaction to the natural fluctuations of oestrogen and progesterone which can lead to intense emotional reactions, depression, negativity, brain fog and fatigue, amongst other things. There are no prizes for guessing that PMDD can get a lot worse during the perimenopause which is why I've drafted in some expert advice on this. My guest is Dr Lynsay Mathews. She's a lecturer in Public Health at the University of the West of Scotland and a leading researcher into PMDD, a condition she's struggled with herself. Lynsay launched the UK's first PMDD research agenda and works with a team of researchers on several studies covering a range of PMDD issues. She's just the woman we need for such a complex subject. We discuss what PMMD is; why it might happen; how it can affect you and your loved ones; how you know you've got it and the challenges of diagnosis. Lynsay talks through her own personal story of PMDD and how it inspired her to initiate numerous research projects into the condition. We look at the stats around PMDD and the number of unsuspecting women who may be struggling with symptoms. She also explains the various treatment options that are available. It's an incredibly thought-provoking discussion and made me wonder just how many women out there might have PMDD and don't realise it. If you suspect that it might be an issue for you and you'd like to find out more and perhaps sign up for one Lynsay's studies, I've put all the relevant links in the show notes. This week's guest is Lynsay Gould founder and CEO of The Podcast Boutique, a podcast production company that champions indie podcasters and helps get more women's voices heard through podcasting. She also started the Podcasting for Business Awards and most recently the podcast network We Are Emmeline. It's been a tough few years for everyone. Typically for her though, she doubled down in her work as podcasting seemed to explode during the first lockdown. She's realised even more than before how important freedom is in her life and work. From a working class family, happy home, they had all they needed but not all they wanted. Her parents believed in her and she grew up hearing ' you can have anything or be anything you want if you work hard enough'. Always very entrepreneurial - full of ideas to make money and start mini businesses. She left home for university before her mum got sick with Cancer so returned home to look after her. She passed away 2 weeks before she found out she was pregnant with her eldest daughter. She fell into HR and was there for 20 years - wanted to help people but got disheartened by the job when it became more like a PR job and reputation management for the company she worked for. Finding a lump in her throat that was suspected to be something sinister (believing that she'd lose her voice) she decided to start her podcast agency which is about helping women to use their voices and speak up and use their voices to be heard. Only 11% of top podcasts by women and she wants to change that. Lynsay knows what she is working towards. Equality for women. No gender pay gap. More women in podcasting in front and behind the mic. It's why she started Emmeline podcast network. She believes that using your voice no matter what, even when it feels like things are stacked against you. One voice can make a difference and create a ripple effect that can create change. Thanks Lynsay for giving so many more woman a platform for speaking out in the world, and wishing you well with the Emmeline Network. And thank you for showing us that when we use our voice to share our message, we can have a much greater influence in the world. You can join her Facebook Group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1812987755694279 Access the resources Lynsay mentioned here: {2:02} How did you start your business? {3:22} I took a massive leap of faith and I went 100 all in with podcasting. {4:12} What has been one of the things that helped you or if there's one thing that's helped you scale and build sort of the agency structure that you've got now? {5:58} I think they're the two biggest things it's sort of doing things before I'm ready and having the right people behind me. {6:09} What was it that made you hire your first full-time staff member and are they based in the uk as well, has that been easier for you? {6:41} It was having to turn clients away and work away because I physically couldn't fit it in. {6:58} Anybody who's thinking oh should I have an employee should I get somebody on board even if it's on a contract basis just do it. You are standing in your own way definitely if you're not doing that. {7:11} How did you find all your clients? How did you get like build that brand awareness for yourself? (8:45} The biggest one has always been around just having that self-belief. {9:24} If everybody could make seven figures online you know nobody would be in a job would they'd all be doing that so it does take hard effort sometimes and it does take hostility it does take long hours but for me personally, it's been worth it. {9:42} Do you think there was where you thought I can do this I can build the agency was there something that went that just clicked for you that you knew that okay I am going all-in? {11:25} My husband is coming out of teaching and he's starting his business in January so that's probably one of the biggest moments I've had where I've thought ah okay are actually doing this now. {12:50} Do you think podcasting of your podcast specifically helped you attract clients and build that business or has it been something else? {13:03} It's been a combination so one of the things that I find with my own podcast but also with my client's podcast, in particular, has been this sort of bonus. {13:59} That's sort of a benefit that we don't often think about when we start a podcast we think about it as oh you know I'm going to put out weekly content I'm but you don't think about that return on the investment necessarily where you start to get clients based on the fact that they've heard your podcast. {15:35} What do you think is the key if somebody's listening along and thinking I need to start a podcast? {18:11} Two things, the first one is to be on a podcast and again I'll share some resources and secondly have a strategy have a reason for starting your podcast if it's something you want to do. {19:36} So that was something that really made a difference to me is hiring somebody. {20:18} What do you think is the basic equipment that people need if they've not got a huge budget to kick off their pockets? {20:55} if you're gonna spend money anywhere with your equipment it's on your microphone. {22:45} The next thing you'll need is a pair of headphones. {24:37} What about editing a podcast is that hard work? {24:50} It's not hard necessarily but it's a skill. {25:12} It's just about knowing how to polish the sound up in the best possible way how to make it sound as rich and fantastic as your voice can do, the mic helps with that quite a lot but the editing is a big thing. {25:52} Even if you're thinking to yourself I'm not techy I've not got a clue you absolutely can, you can start a podcast and edit it perfectly well it just takes a bit of time and practice. {27:03} Don't let the tech get in the way of starting because it's really simple for somebody else to pick it up and do it for you. {27:12} What do you think is the number one thing people need to know about podcasting? {27:57} When you're thinking about where you can make a name for yourself where you can get seen and heard where you can offer a lot of value a podcast is definitely the way to go. Are you confident speaking up? In a meeting? Doing a presentation? In a difficult conversation with family? Lynsay-Anne Gould helps people find the confidence to speak out and get their voice out into the world. As a podcast coach, she's helped loads of people (including me) do it and so knows a load about what holds people back. And what holds us back is - *generally* - different depending on gender. Surprise, surprise women are more held back - *generally* - by mindset and by playing small. Lynsay's passionate about overcoming this, not least because she has 2 daughters, so she's got loads of nuggets of wisdom as well as a very rousing speech about it at the end! Is podcasting for you? How can it help you with what you are doing right now? Is it worth your time and effort? In this episode, my first ever podcast guest, podcast, and business coach, Lynsay Anne Gould, talks about the hows and whys of podcasting. She shares about the industry of podcasting how it can help you whether you are a business owner or a freelancer. Key takeaways from this episode: There is no shame whatsoever in taking a sidestep before you move into business full time. If you're looking to get out of corporate, if you're looking to start a new business or pivot in your business, get some extra support. You can do part-time and build your business gradually. A podcast is an excellent way for people to feel connected to you to get to know you. By the time somebody is ready to chat with you about working with you, they already feel like they know you. If you can really get behind why you want to do something that will push you forward, just take a small step every day. About our guest: Lynsay Anne Gould is a podcast and business coach. She helps people to start and grow podcasts that are going to help them grow their business. She's particularly passionate about getting more female voices heard. She is the host of the Podcasting For Business show. I've helped hundreds of self-employed women achieve the time and money freedom they craved. I've started this podcast because when I first went all in and left the corporate world to be a freelancer, I was grateful for any work that came my way. After over 20 years of freelancing and working for other people, I started to realize I'd created a glass ceiling for myself. In 2017, I finally started listening to that voice that had been telling me for a long time that I wasn't doing what I loved and fulfilling my true potential. It took a critical illness to give me that wake-up call. I don't want the same to happen to you. You can expect practical advice, inspiring stories, and a lot of aha moments as we uncover and kick to the curb all the obstacles you have been putting in your way. I'm on a mission to inspire women to start and play bigger in business. Audio is on the rise as a digital media with Amazon getting involved in streaming podcasts last year and the audio-only app Clubhouse's popularity. Welcome to the Cracking Content Podcast, helping entrepreneurs to amplify their expertise through storytelling, content and PR so they can get more sales and make a bigger impact. Every business has a story to tell. Don't be afraid to tell it Today I have got a brilliant guest, her name is Lynsay Anne Gould, and she is a podcast queen, or should I say a podcast and business coach. She will be sharing her story of how she started her own podcast and how you can start one too. {0:46} I'm a podcasting and business coach. I help entrepreneurs and brands to start podcasts and to grow them. But the main reason I do that is to help them to have more impact. We have a bit of overlap because you do the same, you want to help people have more impact too. {1:23} My background is in HR. I was head of HR, working at director level on some occasions as well. I was doing really well in my career, but the more senior I got in my job, the less happy I felt. {3:49} I kept getting people asking me, "So how do you make money from a podcast? {7.33} Figure out why you're doing it. What do you want it to do? Do you want it to set you up as the expert? {8:05} When you're producing content for your podcast, it's much better to produce content for your ideal listeners who might be a couple of steps behind being ready to work with you. {14.01} But I think one of the biggest things that I find with new podcasters is they are not themselves, so feeling like they've got to put a voice on. {17:32} The Podcasting for Business Awards are live at the time of you listening to this, they're open for all podcasters, and it's your opportunity to get in front of a much, much wider audience. The Podcasting for Business Awards entries close on December 18 2020, and you find out more here: https://www.lynsayanne.com/pfbawards There are 16 categories to choose from, and you can enter up to 3 of them! The Braw and The Brave is a podcast about people and their passions. Episode 127 is a little bit different. For the past 11 years I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with Airdrie and Coatbridge Amateur Operatic Society choreographing productions such West Side Story, Singin' in the Rain, Jesus Christ Superstar and Rock of Ages. They are an amazing club who have been treading the boards for over 100 years. They offer a welcoming, inclusive, supportive and fun space for people to unite and create theatre together, working closely with music, drama and dance specialists to create the most incredible shows. ACAOS's 2020 production of Oklahoma ground to halt two days before opening night back in March and having already started to record an ‘opera week' episode, I felt it was only right to continue talking to just some of the members, albeit remotely, to capture the magic of this wonderful club and why it has such a special place in the hearts of so many. From memorable moments onstage and off to time capsule treasures, find out what it's like to be in Team ACAOS! In this episode we’re talking about why you don't need a big audience to start your podcast. I get lots of people coming to me saying, "Lynsay, I can't start my podcast yet because I need a bigger audience. I don't have an audience yet. So, I need to build the audience first, and then, I'll start a podcast." They're working hard to build an audience. They're putting content out consistently on social media. They're sending emails out to the few people that they have on their list. They might even be at the stage where they're thinking, "Oh, I'm just going to have to spend some money on ads to get found." But here is the truth. Wait for it. The podcast is the thing that is going to help you grow your audience, pretty much for free too. Here are the highlights from this episode: {1:05} Why you don’t need a huge audience to start your podcast {2:55} Why podcasts create a deeper connection with your audience {3:47} How you can grow your email list with your podcast {6:14} Three quick ways to grow your audience through your podcast Link to book a call to discuss how we can work together: https://calendly.com/lynsayanne/exploratory-call?month=2020-07 Podcasting for Business Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/1812987755694279/

Podcast Number 10! So who are Cousin? And What's a Brand Practice? Well in this week's 2nd podcast and on the launch of "Cousin", "The Brand Practice" we find out! As I sit down with Christianne and Lynsay to talk about their new company that launches today! For those that aren't aware, Christianne is my Girlfriend and I am super proud of both of these ladies, it has been inspiring and motivating watching both of them build Cousin and as a result, I find it hard not to start pitching the business on their behalf as I believe in them and their work so, so much. Hopefully, this podcast will give you a glimpse into what I have seen develop in front of me over the last 6 months, a budding friendship (kindred spirits really), a sense of purpose, adventure, a business built to problem solve, with creativity at its core and 2 kick-ass ladies that have a vision for a better way of branding! AKA Cousin, The Brand Practice. Well done both of you! Adam Links: Insta: https://www.instagram.com/homeofcousin/ Website: https://www.cousinbranding.co.uk/ Email: hello@cousinbranding.co.uk

It's a new then/now episode! We compare The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (streaming now on Netflix) with the Melissa Joan Hart 90's extravaganza, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. They're about the same character and yet, they are not the same. Watch along with Those Gals! We watched episodes 1 and 2 (Elaine) and 1-4 (Lynsay) of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina; and Season 1 episode 24 - 'Troll Bride'; Season 2 episode 2, 'Dummy for Love'; and Season 7 episodes 21 and 22, 'What a witch wants' and 'Soul mates'. Tell us what you thought! http://twitter.com/itsthosegals thosegalsgotmail@gmail.com
It's time to talk about "a show I used to watch with my dad" (Lynsay) or "the most important television series of all time" (Elaine): Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What are we, if not women up to a challenge? Passions are high, in what could easily have been a 17.5 hour episode but manages to boil down to a friendly chat and Elaine is already raging about all of the things she forgot to mention. Watch along with Those Gals - (kinda) referenced episodes (but TBH it's more of a general discussion): Season 1, episode 1: Welcome to the Hellmouth Season 2, episode 6: Halloween Season 3, episode 10: Amends Season 4, episode 10: Hush Season 4, episode 17: Superstar Season 6, episode 12: Doublemeat Palace Join the conversation: http://twitter.com/itsthosegals thosegalsgotmail@gmail.com You think you know who you are, what's to come?
