Artificial intelligence continues to shape the future of healthcare, and this year's HIMSS Global Conference 2025 reflected both the momentum and the uncertainties surrounding its adoption. In a conversation with Robert Havasy, Senior Director, Connected Health at HIMSS, the discussion focused on how AI, interoperability, and regulatory policy are influencing healthcare delivery, patient engagement, and the broader industry landscape.AI in Healthcare: From Concept to ImplementationGenerative AI has moved beyond the hype stage, embedding itself into real-world applications. Oracle's announcement of an AI-driven electronic health record (EHR) platform signals a shift in how hospitals and healthcare systems are rethinking data management. However, the conversation is no longer just about the technology itself—it's about how governments, regulatory bodies, and healthcare institutions will set guardrails to ensure AI's responsible and effective use.The Role of Policy in Shaping AI's FutureWhile AI adoption surges, regulatory uncertainty remains a key challenge. The Biden administration had proposed executive orders and regulations to guide AI's role in healthcare, but with political shifts and differing global regulatory approaches, the direction remains unclear. HIMSS has observed that different regions—the U.S., Europe, and Asia—may take separate paths in AI governance, raising questions about whether a unified best-practice framework will emerge or if multiple regulatory approaches will lead to diverging standards.Interoperability and the Shift Back to CustomizationFor years, healthcare institutions moved away from building their own systems in favor of purchasing standardized EHR solutions from dominant industry players. Now, there's a return to in-house development, driven by the need for flexibility, adaptability, and deeper AI integration. At the same time, interoperability remains a hurdle, as institutions seek to make AI work across disparate systems while maintaining security and compliance. The Patient's Role in AI-Driven HealthcareAI's potential to close the information gap between patients and providers is one of the most promising developments. From personal health monitoring through wearables to AI-powered tools that help individuals interpret medical research and their own health data, the patient's role in healthcare decision-making is evolving. The ability for AI to synthesize complex medical data and provide insights in real-time is reshaping how people engage with their health, making them more active participants in their care. What's Next?As HIMSS 2025 highlighted, AI in healthcare is not a distant vision—it's happening now. The question is no longer whether AI will be a part of healthcare, but rather how it will be implemented, regulated, and integrated into existing frameworks to maximize its benefits while mitigating risks. The conversation with Robert Havasy underscores the critical need for collaboration between healthcare providers, policymakers, and technologists to ensure AI delivers on its promise while keeping patients at the center of the equation.Listen to the full episode for deeper insights into how AI, interoperability, and patient-centered care are shaping the future of healthcare.Guest: Robert Havasy, Senior Director, Connected Health at HIMSS | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rhavasy/Hosts:Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast [@RedefiningCyber] | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/sean-martinMarco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society Podcast & Audio Signals Podcast | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli____________________________This Episode's SponsorsHITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from HIMSS 2025 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/himss-2025-health-technology-and-cybersecurity-event-coverage-las-vegasHIMSS 2024 Cybersecurity Report: https://www.himss.org/resources/himss-healthcare-cybersecurity-survey/____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageTo see and hear more Redefining CyberSecurity content on ITSPmagazine, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-cybersecurity-podcastTo see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage? By Noel Carroll, Citizen Development Lab and Lero, J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics, University of Galway, who look at the importance of Connected Health for Ireland. Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly recently published the 'Digital for Care: A Digital Health Framework for Ireland 2024-2030' which sets out an exciting roadmap to digitally transform health services in Ireland. Given the critical role of current and future technologies, digitalisation, and data in shaping Irish healthcare, this framework sets out to achieve a number of key objectives including: A vision for a modern, patient-centred, and sustainable health service that uses the latest digital technologies to deliver improved healthcare services and capacity. Providing guidance for decision-making and investment in digital health to keep Ireland at the forefront of connected health. Providing a roadmap for speeding up the transition to a fully integrated national digital health ecosystem. The importance of Connected Health This framework not only outlines a comprehensive plan for advancing Irish healthcare but also opens up new connected health opportunities for research and development in software solutions. By setting a vision for a modern, patient-centered, and sustainable health service, it encourages the adoption of cutting-edge digital technologies that improve healthcare services and expand capacity. This will also create a fertile ground for developing innovative software solutions tailored to enhance patient care, streamline operations, and optimise resource allocation. The framework also offers some guidance for decision-making and investment in digital health, ensuring that Ireland remains at the forefront of the digital health and may go further by nurturing internal start-up ecosystems within the healthcare system. The inclusion of Robotic Process Automation is very welcome since it can also introduce a new culture around Citizen Development. This may encourage our healthcare services to turn to frontline workers to upskill and address problems they face using digital solutions. Citizen development is a new method of delivering low-code/no-code solutions. It hides the sophistication and complexity of coding but empowers subject matter experts to design, develop and deploy applications into production as though they were full-on, experienced coders. The trend toward the adoption of citizen development is being driven by growing investments in low-code/no-code platforms. Low-code/no-code innovations can revolutionise how healthcare data is collected, analysed, and utilised, leading to more personalised and efficient service delivery. Additionally, the roadmap for accelerating the transition to a fully integrated national digital health ecosystem offers a structured pathway for implementing these new technologies. This integration should facilitate seamless data sharing and connectivity across various healthcare systems and stakeholders, enabling the development of interconnected software solutions, all of which makes for an excellent opportunity to implement citizen development. Researchers and developers can leverage this interconnectedness to create platforms that enhance patient monitoring, telemedicine, predictive analytics, and ultimately contributing to a more efficient and responsive healthcare system. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in citizen development has the potential to revolutionise our healthcare system, bringing about many opportunities to improve patient outcomes, streamline healthcare service operations, reduce costs, and instil a culture around innovative healthcare solutions. However, these advancements are not without their challenges and threats, necessitating a commitment to responsible citizen development and deployment. Ireland, with its growing tech industry and strong regulatory reputation, stands poised to become a global leader in connected health. It can also allow us to shift from t...

If you're on a journey of fitness, you know that perfectionism is your enemy. The same goes for data. There will always be another achievement that you wish to reach. Instead, focus on creating habits that will lead you to better data decisions and long term health.Ameen Kazerouni knows this journey well. Ameen has spent his career at the intersection of science, data, and technology to create intuitive, data-driven experiences. In his role as CTO of Orangetheory Fitness, he is driving consumer wellness journeys by turning workout data into feedback and personalized recommendations. In this episode, Satyen and Ameen discuss data-driven exercise, keeping humans in the feedback loop, and AI data governance.--------“We make a lot of investment in demystifying the Orangetheory workout. And there's a lot of parallels to data, and I love that because when you think about data in an organization, ‘Well, it's going to be a multimillion dollar investment.' And it can get so overwhelming that instead of being like, ‘Let's start piece by piece,' the instinct becomes, ‘Let's just keep guessing instead.' Which is never a good idea. You should never, ‘Let's just revert to not using data at all because it's going to be really difficult to use data perfectly.' It's the same thing with fitness. You don't revert to doing nothing at all because meeting all the requirements will be hard. Showing up and getting started is what gets you going.” – Ameen Kazerouni--------Time Stamps:*(04:42): AI in the workout*(13:56): Data as a habit*(25:45): AI data governance*(38:36): The future of connected health*(44:08): Satyen's Takeaways--------SponsorThis podcast is presented by Alation.Learn more:* Subscribe to the newsletter: https://www.alation.com/podcast/* Alation's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/company/alation/* Satyen's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ssangani/--------LinksFollow Ameen on LinkedIn

Data enablement has the power to transform American Healthcare. It can foster trust between patients and clinicians and make healthcare more accessible, affordable and equitable. This future of an open and connected health ecosystem may seem elusive, but it's not out of reach. Technology will not hold us back — instead our biggest challenge will be creating a value-based model of care where new innovations can thrive. This week we our joined by Dr. David Feinberg, the Chairman of Oracle Health. Dr. Feinberg is committed to advancing thought leadership and strategy related to unleashing the healing power of data through an open and connected healthcare ecosystem. Previously Dr. Feinberg served as president and CEO of Cerner, now Oracle Health, where he led teams delivering tools and technology to improve the patient and caregiver experience. He has also served as the VP of Google Health, and he served as the President and CEO of Geisinger where he led a complex turnaround and guided Geisinger's transition to value-based care. Episode Bookmarks: 01:30 Introduction to Dr. David Feinberg, Chairman of Oracle Health. 02:45 The massive generation of data by humankind in the modern day (projected to be 175 Zettabytes by 2025). 03:45 Approximately 80% of healthcare data today is unstructured. 04:30 People are dying unnecessarily and suffering poor outcomes despite the amount of data generated by the healthcare system. 05:30 "Healthcare fundamentally is people caring for people. Data is secondary; the primary aspect of healthcare is trust.” 06:30 Making Electronic Health Records usable is of paramount importance (PCPs Need 27 Hours a Day to Do Their Best Work!) 07:00 Digitizing the medical record has made clinical workflows humanly impossible and compromises trust. 07:30 The vision for an open and connected health data ecosystem. 08:45 The Meaningful Use program did nothing for EHR usability (an example of the Gartner Hype Cycle). 10:00 Dr. Feinberg's clinical and executive leadership background provided a great lesson in technology adoption. 11:00 Can there be a high level of technology adoption in healthcare like Google dominates the non-healthcare marketplace? 12:30 We have solved for interoperability, but healthcare lacks a level of usability to allow a true longitudinal health record. 14:00 Motivating doctors for high performance ultimately comes down to the data scorecard. 15:00 Knowing the game (volume vs. value) and the promise of data enablement in value-based care. 16:00 The 21st Century Cures Act and the path forward in interoperability. 17:00 Can scalable FHIR-based interoperability and Open APIs eventually reach critical mass in the U.S. to improve population health? 19:45 Dr. Feinberg describes the two points of failure by technology companies trying to disrupt the healthcare ecosystem. 20:30 How Oracle Cerner is designing an intelligent, cloud-enabled platform to change healthcare for the better. 22:00 An example of disruption with Internet Banking and how application of those principles could change the healthcare system. 23:45 Digitization of medical records was a requisite first step. 24:00 Integration and normalization of disparate data sets provides an opportunity to create data intelligence. 25:00 How Larry Ellison's impatience for healthcare disruption clashes with the realities of the industry. 26:30 Recognizing the "life and death" aspects of healthcare transformation. 27:00 Making incremental progress with a digitized medical record…and then COVID happens to accelerate value-based care! 29:00 Workforce burnout and EHR usability - “Simplicity is the ultimate art of sophistication.” 30:00 “Value-based care is ultimately the best way to address the root cause of burnout in the workforce.” 30:45 The need for UX in the design of EHR applications to optimize physician workflow. 31:30 Results in usability redesign — ex: 19% reduction in nursing time at the terminal,

If there is one person I trust with my nutrition and supplementation, it's Robb Wolf. LMNT is a tasty electrolyte drink mix with everything you need and nothing you don't. That means a science-backed electrolyte ratio – with none of the junk. No sugar. No coloring. No artificial ingredients. No gluten. No fillers. No BS. The benefits are numerous, but here's a few to wet your whistle... Prevent and eliminate headaches, muscle cramps, fatigue, sleeplessness, and other common symptoms of electrolyte deficiency Boost performance and recovery. Electrolytes facilitate hundreds of functions in the body, including the conduction of nerve impulses, hormonal regulation, nutrient absorption, and fluid balance Support a low-carb lifestyle by preventing, mitigating, and eliminating the “low carb/keto flu” Support healthy fasting. LMNT replaces electrolytes without breaking a fast Personally, I'm a big fan of intermittent fasting and drinking LMNT daily during my fasting hours provides noticeable improvements in energy, focus, and gut function. Most of all, it helps me drink more water throughout the day and that's never a bad thing (it also mixes well in a cocktail, but you didn't hear that from me).
