Lori Foster talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her latest novel, THE LAKE HOUSE, which our reviewer Bronwyn Miller says "would be perfect to toss into your bag as you head to the beach or the lake, or as you're relaxing in your yard when you need a sweet escape from the everyday." Set in Bramble, Kentucky, it's the second installment in her Firefly Summer series, following last year's THE GUEST COTTAGE (though it easily can be read as a stand-alone title). Lori talks about being a linear writer, allowing the story to bring her along. The role of her new character, Brogan Rafferty, as an inexperienced caregiver provides both emotional depth and comic relief, grounding the novel in relatable human experiences. Amusingly, Lori enlisted her loved ones during a Sunday gathering to help her do the math on the ages of her characters across these two books, which became a fun family activity. Step inside the hearth‑warm world of Dawson's Den, a cozy, frontier‑flavored storytelling podcast blending mythic Americana, old‑time radio charm, and wholesome humor from the heart of Montana. This week's episode brings together everything listeners love about the Den: quirky sponsor spots, critter lore, frontier legends, and a swinging tune to send you home smiling. In this episode, Will welcomes listeners with a bone‑dry, straight‑faced commercial for Blizzard Biscotti, the frontier snack that's treated as real as snow on the Bighorns. From there, Critter Corner returns with a lively look at the Uinta ground squirrel—its habits, its hijinks, and why this little burrower is a true sign of spring across the Mountain West. The storytelling fire burns bright with a new tale of Flint Mallory, a snowstorm, and Bramble's legendary Biscotti Warmer, a contraption whose origins may be as mysterious as the blizzard itself. Expect myth, mischief, and that signature Den blend of sincerity and absurdity. To close out the night, the Bighorn Buckaroos bring the barn roof up with their new Western Swing number, “Snowball Spring Swing,” a toe‑tapping tune perfect for the season's thaw.If you enjoy cozy fiction, frontier storytelling, Americana music, wholesome comedy, or old‑time radio‑style podcasts, Dawson's Den is your weekly place by the fire. Pull up a chair—there's always room at the hearth.

Read transcriptDigivolve your PlayStation controllers and prepare to shuffle your way through the most wonderfully confused identity crisis in gaming history, because this week on Play Comics we're tapping into the pixelated card-battling chaos that is Digimon Digital Card Battle for the PS1! Released in 2001 when every entertainment franchise on Earth was racing to cash in on the trading card game gold rush sparked by Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, Bandai decided their digital monsters deserved a piece of that sweet, sweet card-slinging action. The twist? They didn't just adapt the existing Digimon trading card game – oh no, that would be far too simple. Instead, they created an entirely NEW card game exclusively for this PS1 title, because apparently someone at BEC thought “You know what kids collecting physical cards really need? A completely different set of rules that only exists in digital form!” What emerged was a gloriously polygonal fever dream where Veemon, Hawkmon, and Armadillomon became your partners in a card-battling odyssey through Battle Arenas, all while you sacrifice Digimon from your hand like some kind of digital monster cult leader gathering “DP” (Digivolve Points, not whatever your brain just went to) to evolve your creatures into increasingly ridiculous forms. It's rock-paper-scissors meets card game mechanics meets “please stop making me grind the same battles 300 times to unlock the secret final boss.” Joining us for this digivolved discussion is the phenomenally talented Sahoni from Bramble Wolf Games! When they're not busy crafting games that actually mean something or channeling their Queer and Indigenous (ᏣᎳᎩᏱ ᏕᏣᏓᏂᎸᎩ) storytelling magic into unforgettable tabletop experiences, Sahoni brings their narrative expertise to help us understand how this PS1 oddity somehow convinced an entire generation that carrying around 30 digital cards was infinitely more practical than the hundreds of physical ones weighing down their backpacks. So crack open that PS1 jewel case, practice your best “I'm going to pretend I understand these Support Card effects” face, and prepare for an episode more entertaining than watching the same Digimon battle animation for the 47th time. We'll explore whether this card-game-that-never-was actually honored the spirit of the Digimon franchise, or if it just left us wondering why we couldn't trade our digital cards with friends like we could in literally every other TCG game of the era! Learn such things as: If watching the same PS1-era polygonal battle animations 300+ times builds character or just destroys your will to live? Why the game forces you to read tiny PS1-resolution text on cards and whether that counts as an accessibility nightmare or just “authentic retro experience” Why creating a brand-new trading card game that only exists in one video game is either pure genius or complete madness (spoiler: probably both) And so much more! You can find Sahoni on Bramble Wolf Games, on Tumbler @sahonithereadwolf, or on BlueSky @Sahoni. Join Dan and Tom as they decode the 1943 movie, FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO. Is this World War II movie a spy movie? Listen as Dan tries to convince Tom it is, despite Tom's uncertainty. The story with this menacing title follows the exploits of Cpl. John Bramble in June 1942 after he fell out of his tank in the North African desert. Later on, he ends up meeting Rommel, The Desert Fox, himself. Most of the movie takes place inside the hotel “Empress of Britain”. It is a great setting. Also, something is interesting there underneath the first floor. The people behind this movie are top-notch. Billy Wilder directed and co-wrote it with Charles Brackett, adopting Lajos Biró's play “Hotel Imperial”. It garnered three Academy Award nominations and has an excellent cast. Specifically, Anne Baxter, Franchot Tone, Akim Tamiroff, and Erich von Stroheim play the leads. This is a movie where you don't want to be scanning your phone at the same time as you watch it. You need to pay close attention. However, by listening to this episode, you will enhance your viewing experience. We give you some things to look out for. What we will decode in this episode While we don't give away the key answers for this movie, these are the things we decode in our look at FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO: · Details on this great cast. · How it had a real-world impact on the war. · The humor in this serious movie. For example, we include a clip from the movie about bedbugs. · Without a doubt, there is a tie-in to Boris Karloff. What is it? · The production, cinematography, costuming, and the score. · What Tom thought Bramble needed to have with him on the tank. · The use of the German language. Authentic? · Opera in a World War II movie? · The dialogue - good, or bad? · Certainly, Rommel would not have said what he said at that lunch. Would he? · Answering Tom's question of if this is a spy movie · And more! What we don't answer is what the “five graves to Cairo” are. You need to watch the movie for that. Where to download the movie As of the time of the release of this episode (June 2025), you can stream this movie for free at: https://archive.org/details/five-graves-to-cairo-1943-billy-wilder. Boxing is different. We all know that. We're allowed access into the lives of fighters in a way other sports don't provide with their athletes, and as a result we often feel as though we know them and are close to them. When we lose fighters, and especially fighters we cared for, it sure hurts. On this episode of the Knuckes and Gloves podcast, boxing historians Patrick Connor and Aris Pina team up to remember former heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist "Big" George Foreman, and give a brief tribute to Ras-I Alujah Bramble, better known as Livingstone Bramble.
