In this episode of Becoming Witchy, we talk about the transformative power of mending — both in objects and in our own lives, as well as its potential to be used in spellcraft. As a conservator, I've witnessed the inherent magic of piecing together what was once broken, drawing parallels to the healing that comes from repairing our hearts and relationships. From the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi to the symbolic strength of reforged swords in myth and legend, this episode is a reflection on how repair can be a potent act of resilience, renewal, and magic.Support the creation of the podcast on Patreon! Returning to albumtoalbum for a long-overdue reunion is renowned actor, occasional Dalek and author of The Complete David Bowie, Nicholas Pegg. Nick's an old friend of the podcast and has tackled some of David Bowie's most acclaimed albums in previous episodes - as well as exploring entire eras (our 198More series of chats take an overview of Bowie's singles, soundtracks and various off-extramural activities 1981 - 1989). Now, he's back to tackle one of the most challenging artefacts in the Bowie oeuvre - the much-maligned 1984 album Tonight. A rag-tag bag of semi-sentient cover versions, marimbas, an absolutely bracingly brilliant long-form promo video (very 1984) a couple of superb Bowie evergreens, some blue-and-brown-eyed reggae and uncharacteristically insipid production, Tonight might not be the worst album of 1984, but it fell short of what long time Bowie fans had come to expect. Clearly geared to what Bowie assumed were his new Let's Dance-era fans, the album was recorded almost straight after the massive Serious Moonlight tour, without the satisfying thwack that conceptual cohesion and creative conviction characterising Bowie's best work to date. Here, Bowie opted to work with a young British producer, Derek Bramble, who had little awareness of Bowie's work. As Nick says in this episode, Bramble's lack of public profile might have appealed to Bowie, after the megawatt presence of Nile Rogers on Let's Dance. Fair enough. But then, getting happening, in-demand producer, most recently with The Police, Hugh Padgham on board, in the junior role of engineer, wasn't Bowie's brightest idea. In this episode, we kick off by looking back at the lead-up to the album's recording (in Canada), a cast of characters including Derek Bramble, Hugh Padgham, Iggy Pop and Carlos Alomar and the album's first three tracks - Loving The Alien, Don't Look Down and the unforgettable cover version of the Beach Boys' God Only Knows.  With thanks to Nicholas Pegg, and Leah Kardos for the background music. During the conversation, we have references from Chris O'Leary, Charles Shaar Murray and that Bowie resource par excellence, bowiebible.com

In this episode of Becoming Witchy, we explore the ancient winter witch of Celtic mythology—the Cailleach. Known as the “Old Crone” or “The Cold One,” she embodies the raw, untamed energy of winter. We dive into her rich lore from Scotland and Ireland, her connection to the rugged landscape, and her unapologetic, primal power. I also reflect on the transformative archetype of the witch, inspired by a poignant moment in the witchy TV series Agatha All Along, and share how witchcraft offers clarity, strength, and empowerment. Plus, we talk about the beauty of embracing the slower, darker months and offer a ritual to connect with the Cailleach by building a cairn—a stone shrine to honor her wild, enduring spirit. It is operated by the Myrmalir – fungal creatures that emit a phosphorescent glow and live to serve their benevolent ruling force: the Hypogene. The skeleton crew is made up of Bark, the curmudgeonly but devoted senior coordinator counting down the days until he can see his son again, and Bramble, a promising doctoral candidate whose research could change her people's future if she doesn't get distracted by artefacts from the planet's past. A feral force is threatening the continued existence of life in this corner of space, with Crossharbour itself in terrible peril. When trouble with the TARDIS leaves the Doctor and Kim-Ly trapped on Crossharbour, the daily difficulties of adapting to a completely alien way of life is the least of their worries. I'd like to say that this is one of the best love duets ever recorded, but I demur from superlatives generally. However, I can say with certainty that it's one of my favorites. Maybe it's the simple, straightforward vocal delivery of these two raw-boned, pioneer types that makes me cry every time they ease into the sinuous harmonies of the chorus. And, the lyrics complement the American Gothic soundscape as they sing: “See how the bramble and the rose intertwine…” It's a performance for the ages from two people who obviously loved and trusted each other and were dedicated to their mission to share the folk music they cherished.I'd never heard of Mary McCaslin or Jim Ringer when I ran across their album in the cut out bin at the old Rhino Records store on Westwood in Los Angeles. And, I'm not sure what induced me to buy it - perhaps it was the inclusion on the track list of “Oh, Death,” - a song I knew from Ralph Stanley-, that clinched the deal; Maybe it was the primitive portrait of the two lovers: Mary, with her modest, down cast eyes opposite the barrel chested, ruddy cheeked Ringer, who stares directly, and challengingly, from the cover. Whatever the draw, I'm thankful I spent the $3.99, and I've kept it close to my heart ever since for solace, to remind me that true love, even with all its thorns, is worth fighting for.
