5x15 is delighted to announce a special online event with Oliver Burkeman, author of the international breakout bestseller Four Thousand Weeks, a book that touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of readers. Inspired by its investigation into time and how we use it, some of those readers changed their lives, and made big decisions to rethink careers, relationships, priorities, and misguided assumptions about productivity. Now, Oliver Burkeman is back with Meditations for Mortals, a book that will take us on a liberating journey towards a more meaningful life. Addressing the fundamental questions about how to live, it offers a powerful new way to take action on what counts: a guiding philosophy of life that he calls ‘imperfectionism'. How can we embrace our non-negotiable limitations? Or make good decisions when there's always too much to do? What if purposeful productivity were often about letting things happen, not making them happen? To be read either as a four-week ‘retreat of the mind' or devoured in one or two sittings, Meditations for Mortals will be a source of solace and inspiration, and an aid to a saner, freer, and more enchantment-filled life. Money is more than just a tool for paying bills or buying things, it can be deeply symbolic and emotionally charged. For many, financial struggles are closely intertwined with mental health challenges. Research conducted by the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, revealed that in England alone, over 1.5 million people struggle with both problem debt and mental health issues. Of those surveyed, 86% said their financial situation had worsened their mental health. Becoming more aware of how our thoughts, emotions, and past experiences shape our money habits, may not magically solve financial hardships, but it can be a positive step toward building a healthier relationship with money and regaining a sense of control. The complexities of money, which is crucial for our survival, highlight the profound connection between financial well-being and mental health, offering a pathway to greater understanding and empowerment. The Happier Life Project welcomes Vicky Reynal a London-based psychotherapist specialising in the psychology of money. Vicky is author of the award-winning book 'Money on Your Mind: The Psychology Behind Your Financial Habits', which is being translated into eight languages, and will land in the US on January 7th (available to pre order now). In her psychotherapy clinic, Vicky works with clients on a range of issues including; debt, excessive greed, financial conflict, and money secrecy. Using psychodynamic principles, she helps people uncover and address the emotions driving their financial behaviours. Vicky's expertise has been featured in The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Times, The Daily Mail and Psychologies. In this episode of The Happier Life Project host Gabby Sanderson speaks to Vicky about why money can feel so emotionally charged, and why people often react defensively when it comes to financial matters. Vicky explains how decoding the hidden emotions behind spending, saving, and financial conflict, can help foster understanding and drive meaningful change. The money and mental health expert also explains why being more open and honest in communication about our finances—whether with friends, family members, or even bill companies—can help alleviate stress and build a healthier relationship with our bank balance. By addressing financial concerns directly, rather than burying our heads in the sand and reacting with "vague defences" like avoidance or procrastination, Vicky discusses how most people feel much better after opening up, realising that often things aren't as bad as they seemed. Vicky also shares practical advice on creating a healthier relationship with money to reduce stress and improve mental well-being. Tune in to discover how decoding the emotional connection to your finances can transform your mental wellness, and your approach to money.

What's it like to be published by a ‘big 5' publisher? How can you find time to write when you have a job, a young family…and a global pandemic to contend with? These are just a few of the questions I ask this month's guest - Dr Emma Hepburn - aka @thepsychologymum.  Emma is a clinical psychologist with expertise in neuropsychology who has over 20 years of experience working with and treating mental health difficulties and working with brain conditions in both the NHS and private sector.  She is the author of four books, including “A Toolkit for Modern Life,” “A Toolkit for Happiness,” and “A Toolkit for Your Emotions.” She has been featured on the BBC, in the Huffington Post, and the Sunday Telegraph and has a regular column in Psychologies magazine. During our brilliant chat, we discuss: Emma's author journey, including her experience working with one of the Big Five publishers - Hachette - and why she believes great books come from having a great team around you. Why we can struggle with imposter syndrome as writers - and often don't even call ourselves authors, despite having written several books.  The opportunities that being an author has given her -  helping her spread her message further - and why timing played a part in the success of her first book - March 2020, anyone? How Emma managed to fit in writing during the years of COVID - particularly when working for the NHS - and the different experiences she had writing each of her books when it came to time management! And LOTS more! I've been a big fan of Emma's since I started reading her monthly column in Psychologies magazine - not to mention her artwork on Instagram, which is incredible at demystifying the brain and giving her audience practical tools to help with their mental health.  This is a wonderful conversation, so I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed having it! I am really excited to bring to you somebody that I was first introduced to, like years and years and years ago when we were both working in journalism. We talk all things spiritual paths, daily practices and the power of not accepting rejection.I am so excited for you to get to know this amazing woman, get comfy and enjoy.Quotes "Using your art or using your creativity to actually make a living and earn money was, to me, it was just such a joy.""I thought, if I'm going to keep going forward, I can either do it in despair or I can do it in a positive way.""There's no guarantees, there's no certainty. But what you can trust in is love."Highlights 06:50 In a time of intense trauma, I found a way through my imagination and my creativity to reconnect with myself and reconnect with them. So it was a really big deal for me. It's like, I mean, imagine if you didn't have that. What do people do if you haven't got that and how disconnected you would feel or alone you would feel. And using my imagination was everything at that point.22:11 I was being really codependent with my husband at the time, and I was saying, oh, you go and live your dreams. You be a musician. You go and learn how to play the saxophone. And so he did. And then I sat in the audience and I watched him, and I didn't feel pride or love. I felt envy. And I was like, oh, my God, what is this? What is this disgusting emotion? 34:37 And by about, you know, second day, you're exhausted, you're knackered, and then you realize, I'm not my stories. The question is, if you're not your stories, which I've spent all life doing about I am my story, who are you?Find Suzy Online Find Suzy on Instagram Find Suzy on Facebook Ways to work with me: Order The Infinite Receiving Book here and get 7 days of The Gateway for FREE. Becky Ripley and Sophie Ward take a cold hard look at the psychology behind each of the seven deadly sins, in the order established by Pope Gregory the Great: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and lazy old sloth. Why have we evolved these ugly emotions? What's going on in the brain and the body when we feel them? And how best can we live alongside them - in ourselves and with others?Lust is today's hot topic. It's crucial to the continuation of our species, but it's also a form of neurochemical madness that can lead us astray. We all have wildly different brains, bodies, and cultural references, so everyone's relationship to lust is highly personal. Is it true that men want it more than women? When was the "lustiest" time in history? And, back in today's world, how can we navigate our drives alongside cultural expectations and the issue of consent? And how can we feel desire without shame? To guide us through this mess is evolutionary anthropologist Dr Anna Machin from the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, sexologist with a specialty in men's health and sexual function, Dr Anand Patel, and sex historian Dr Kate Lister, lecturer at Leeds Trinity University and author of 'A Curious History of Sex'.Producer: Becky Ripley

We're talking greed for money, for land, for material things – and ultimately for control, status, dominance, power. The kind of greed that separates the "haves" from the "have nots". On one hand, greed is a great motivator, driving us all forward in our pursuit to get more of whatever it is we want. In the previous episodes I have talked about festive perfectionism and festive burnout – basically from doing all the things, and trying to do them perfectly.  This week, I want to continue the theme by thinking about comparison culture at Christmas. If you feel upset after you've seen other people's pretty Christmas photos, with their kids in matching pyjamas and being all smiles in front of the tree, whilst your kids are murdering each other in the background in your own house, and you draw a deep sigh about the chaos, then this is for you.  I'll keep it brief, as I know you have a lot on in December. My operations manager and I were reflecting on that over text message this week, with her saying ‘December is a joke' and me replying ‘December is a joke that isn't funny'.  I've connected with several people through my act of rebellion against a gingerbread house in a recent Instagram reel – yes, I gave it the finger. No, I'm not a Grinch. Go check it out, for the lolz, as the kids say.  The overwhelm is REAL. I've noticed that part of that overwhelm and perfectionistic pressure around the holidays is also linked to comparison culture. I was recently interviewed about perfectionism in the Christmas dossier for Psychologies magazine, so you can check that out too for more inspiration around how to let go of perfectionism at Christmas.    Links:  Connect with me on Instagram to see the flippant gingerbread house: www.instagram.com/the_thomas_connection    Put your name down on this link to be the first to know about the ADHD membership: www.thethomasconnection.co.uk/adhd    Link for advert: www.thethomasconnection.co.uk/burn-bright info@thethomasconnection.co.uk to ask Michaela about Burn Bright.

“Be true to yourself” is a dominant refrain in the Western world, but how has individualism come to be such a prominent feature of Western thought? To what extent is that individualism Christian?Glen Scrivener and Andrew Wilson are joined by Carl Trueman, author of The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self and Strange New World, to answer those questions and continue their discussion of our post-Christian world.Beginning with Rousseau, they trace the ways in which our idea of the modern self has transformed and shaped our understanding of anthropology. Particularly touching on the transformations which have happened in our understanding of marriage, divorce and sex, they ask in what ways the church has become complicit in these changes and to what extent these individualistic assumptions have come to shape both the church and the world.Credits:Post-Christianity? is a podcast from The Gospel Coalition and The Keller Center for Cultural Apologetics. Shows Main Idea – There are two competing authorities in our culture today that present the pathway to transformation. The secular psychological community put forth the DSM as the authority to transform your life, while the Christian believes the Bible is the world's transcending, authoritative psychology book that brings peace and change to the soul. The one you choose will determine the course and quality of your life. Rick compares the two in this webinar while making a persuasive case for God's Word as the authority over our souls. Meet Lisa Johnson   Lisa Johnson is a multi-seven-figure Global Business Strategist who makes 90% of her money through passive or semi-passive income streams. In one launch alone during the global pandemic in 2021, she made $3 million in a week - earning $1.2m in the first hour of sales with continued success in 2022 when she made $2.5m in one week. Her business made over $10m in the first five years. After a tough childhood spent in social housing, Lisa went on to have successful careers in law, banking, and the entertainment industry. Her background in overcoming obstacles has helped mold her into a bold, straight-talking coach, who is never afraid to be an authentic and outspoken truth-teller. She took herself from $35,000 in debt to a successful entrepreneur making millions and helping thousands of people in just five years.  Lisa has over 50,000 followers across social media and a number one business podcast, Making Money Online which has been listened to across 119 countries and has over 150,000 downloads to date. She has spoken on the BBC's Women's Hour and has been featured in national newspapers and magazines including The Telegraph, Psychologies, The Guardian, and Fast Company. A feature on Lisa in Forbes magazine garnered over a quarter of a million views in one week. Lisa is a huge believer that everyone can become a success no matter their background, is an ambassador for the charity BulliesOut, and is known for her anti-bullying campaigning online. Lisa lives in Bedfordshire, UK with her husband and twin sons but coaches around the globe.   Lisa is one of the most genuine and authentic women business owners I know. Her story is going to inspire and empower you to realize that your strengths are to be honored and that you can do, be or have anything. The bigger reminder here is to honor your own values, integrity, and morals. I'm here for that, and know you are too!       From Welfare to Wealth Lisa grew up on welfare and struggled throughout her childhood and teen years being bullied because she was poor. While this kind of traumatic experience could have deterred anyone, Lisa used it as fuel for her inner fire to become prosperous and follow her talents. She talked about starting a banking job making decent money and then deciding to get into wedding planning in the UK to supplement her income. She had twin boys, had recently gotten divorced, and realized she needed more money to support her children. She racked up a bit of debt and realized she needed to learn about business, inside and out. A year or so later she got back into the wedding business and started increasing her revenue, but started to notice what she was really good at was explaining to others what to do to make money using strategy. She loved teaching and helping other business owners and soon pivoted to start her business as a global business strategist.      Redefining Success In Lisa's first year as a business strategist, she made close to $220,000 working 80 hours/week, doing many one-to-one sessions with clients. She realized after taking a hard look at her business and the model she was working in, that she actually doesn't like one-to-one work and prefers one-to-many (such as groups, masterminds, etc). This was eye-opening for Lisa, and she decided to shift gears and change her business model completely. What I think is fascinating is that most people would get scared and worried about losing clients, money, and success, but Lisa leaned into her strength and what was true for her. She scaled her business, worked 30 hours/month, and made $2 million dollars in year two in this updated model that was in alignment with her energy and strengths. We talked a lot about the power of both redefining success and what business model (or way of working) is best for your interests and how you are designed. Here are some of the key points, and my favorite question from Lisa's wisdom on success:   1) The question to ask yourself is "What does success mean to me?" 2) You need to find a business model that is true for you and works for your favorite way to be of service. That might mean doing only 1:1 sessions, 1 to many, or a hybrid...or something else. Don't just follow what others are doing. Stop, pause and ask yourself what's the best model for you. 3) Tap into your strengths and use them as your guidepost! 4) You'll never feel fulfilled until you know and experience your version of success. Get clear on what that means for you. 5) Stop chasing money, instead choose happiness. Enjoy the in-between!     Morals over Money When in doubt, choose morals over money. Lisa shared her story of turning down a pricey trip to Neckar Island with a group of well-known entrepreneurs after realizing it was not aligned with her values. This meant losing money but not compromising her morals. Let your values be your guide and remember that the goal is not to get external validation, but to make a bigger impact.   One of my fave quotes: "We all have the ability to make a ripple effect. Don't go for the money, go for happiness and making a difference."      If you are ready for greater support to overcome self-doubt and stop your own internal 'not enough' voice so you can step into your genius and design your best life, connect with Julie to see if she is the right fit to coach and mentor you.
