An attempt to delay Devon's local elections in May has failed, and that could have big ramifications for the county, the latest episode of Devoncast discovers. Councillor Julian Brazil, the Liberal Democrat member for Kingsbridge on Devon County Council and the leader of South Hams District Council, gives us his reaction to the government's refusal to let Devon postone its elections. And Cllr Brazil explains why the South Hams has agreed a two-tier structure for car parking fees in his district, with locals able to pay less than visitors if they apply for a permit. We also hear from Devon County Council leader James McInnes about his views on the elections and what Devon has to do now if it is to create a credible plan for how local government in the county needs to be reorganised. There's also an update on police funding from police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez, and we hear from Devon MP David Reed who is pushing for more stringent rules upon property management companies. Finally, we hear about an important building on Tiverton's Grand Western Canal that has been saved from the chop. It's all in the latest edition of Devoncast, from Radio Exe and the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The programme is available for LDRS partners to use in full or in part.
Exeter's great divide is one of the main topics for the latest Devoncast. Special guest is Exeter University student Finn Aston, whose own podcast Town and Gown looks at how the uni helps to shape the city, and lifts the lid of some of the issues it creates. There's more on the great hospitals building programme, and how it affects some long-awaited projects across Devon, and there's a planting programme in the South Hams that is creating something hopeful for the future. On top of all that, we meet the man who wants to made Exeter the latest place to have an official branch of the party that is seeking to become a new force in British politics. It's all in the latest edition of Devoncast, from Radio Exe and the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Racial equality champion Jermaine Atiya-Alla is the guest on the new Devoncast, talking about why his role with Torbay Council is more important than ever in the wake of this summer's riots. He also talks about the drive to bring more diversity to councils across the county. Exmouth and Exeter East MP David Reed continues his quest for answers over the sewage spill that has been causing problems in his constituency, and in the South Hams there is good news for local families as well as a 'follow the rules' warning to would-be developers. It's all in the latest edition of Devoncast, from Radio Exe and the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Join Qayyum Rashid and Sharjeel Ahmed for Wednesday's show from 4-6pm where we will be discussing: “Dementia” and “Al Ghazali” Dementia Dementia seems pretty unrelated to the 6 digit letter on your address. However a recent study done by the all-party parliamentary group on dementia, found that your postcode can certainly impact your diagnosis. For instance, in towns like South Hams, the diagnosis rate is less than 50%, whereas in other locations such as Nottingham, the rates exceed 80%. What factors and underlying causes contribute to this disparity in diagnosis rates among towns? Al Ghazali Al-Ghazali was a prominent Islamic theologian, philosopher and jurist who lived in the 11th Century. He is one of the most influential figures in Islamic intellectual history and made significant contributions to various fields. Join us as we discuss the life and legacy of this great Islamic scholar. Guests Naz Asghar - Oversees Sahara Services Tamara Albertini Kenneth Garden - Associate Professor at Tufts University Producers Rabah Nasir and Maria Ahmad Tooba
As you'll know by now, one of our core motivators in creating this podcast was the realisation that the 'democratic' systems of the world are largely broken and are not a useful way to affect change. I used to be a political activist. I thought I'd given all that up, but today's conversation has definitely re-awakened my political instincts because today I'm talking with two of the people who set up South Devon Primary: a group committed to changing the political system in the UK. So the first thing to say for those of you who live elsewhere is that this episode is focused on the need for change in the Westminster Parliament. But the issues are worldwide and whatever your political system, it could probably do with being shaken up. We need to share best practice across the globe and what Simon Oldridge, Anthea Simmons and Ben Long have created feels like a template that could be replicated not just throughout the UK but across the world. The principles are basic and while it's not going to take us to full democracy in one giant leap, it's definitely a step in the right direction. If adopted around the nation (and the world) it could see us move away from the politics of hatred, fear and resentment to something a great deal more generative. To look at these three in more depth and so understand where they're coming from: Simon Oldridge was an accountant with Ernst and Young and then CEO of a manufacturing company. More recently, his awareness of the climate and ecological crisis has led him to engage with a group endeavouring to put forward a Climate and Ecology Bill to the UK parliament (he talks about this in the podcast) and to set up the South Devon Primary campaign which you'll hear about in much more depth. Anthea Simmons is Editor in Chief of the progressive online paper, West Country Voices, speaker for Devon for Europe and author of a number of books, including one for young climate activists. Before that, rather like Simon, she worked in financial asset management. She's a passionate advocate for the South Devon Primary and invented the Democracy Meter, which you're also hear about in the conversation. Ben Long is an author and educator and currently helps his partner run her ceramics business in Devon. He didn't join us on the podcast - partly because I think two extra voices is enough to contend with - but he's a core part of the work of South Devon Primary. And that work is practical, active, really intelligently targeted and if it were taken up around the country, could do more, I think, to shape the outcome of the next general election than anything else I've found. Listen, enjoy - and then make this happen as near to wherever you live as you can. Devon's political map is completely different this weekend to last. We discuss the winners and losers on Devoncast. As with the national picture, the Tories endured an election they would probably rather forget, losing control of three Devon councils and shedding seats on nine of the 10 up for election. However, they did win a surpise majority on Torbay Council, replacing an Lib Dem – Independent coaltion. We look into why that might have happened. The big winners across Devon were the Liberal Democrats. Ollie Heptinstall, Rob Kershaw and Philip Churm unpick the party's victories in North Devon, South Hams, Mid Devon and Teignbridge. Meanwhile, Labour is now in charge of both of our cities again. Little changed in Exeter – already a Labour stronghold – but the party's victory in Plymouth made national headlines. What was behind their success? We then look at what the results tell us ahead of next year's likely general election and how the parties are placed across Devon.
We're both house sitting in the South Hams for a couple of weeks and its going well for managing to get into the water most days in some very varied conditions. Only one wing session, but a couple of kite sessions and a couple more prone sessions has seen some progression across the board. Today we delve into these sessions as well as having a natter about a few things: our rookie interpretation into the current GWA wing foil world cup events Windows and materials on Wings The red card in Saturdays Six Nations Rugby game What sponsors Freddie wants to work with when he starts his pro wing career It's a fun little episode this week - its always nice to sit down together to dissect a few opinions and thoughts on matters within the Industry. Freddie might've gotten a little over excited about a few things and hopes they're not too offensive, but we found them too funny not to include in the edit - if we get cancelled at least we'll know why. We'll be back very soon with an interview with North Foils Brand manager, Mike Raper. If anyone has any questions for Mike please ping them over, we're really looking forward to it. Legendary TV actor Dennis Waterman has died at the age of 74, his family has confirmed. Waterman was one of the most popular television actors of the 1970s in 80s, starring the The Sweeney, Minder and Life and Loves of a She-Devil. In more recent years, he starred in BBC's New Tricks alongside veteran actors Amanda Redman, James Bolam and Alun Armstrong. In a statement, his family said he died today with his wife Pam at his side. A 'mass trespass' through a restricted estate used for pheasant shooting in South Devon today has kicked off a nationwide series of protests for a greater right to roam. Right to Roam, a campaign group that wants to see more private land made accessible to walkers, has picnicked and paraded through the Duke of Somerset's South Hams estate today in what marks the beginning of a month-long nationwide campaign. With her hair tied into a bun, the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy walked across the courtroom and passed within inches of her rival Coleen, who glanced in her direction for the first time all day. She then took to the stand and swore on the bible before being quizzed by Coleen's barrister David Sherborne. The WAGs have been at war since October 2019 after Coleen accused her fellow footballer's wife of leaking 'false stories' about her private life, before claiming she had uncovered the culprit after carrying out a social media 'sting operation'.
Sharpham Estate in Devon is famous for its wine and its cheese - but this year, more than ever, it was important to remind tourism providers and other movers and shakers about the fine produce that is made down by the shores of the River Dart in the South Hams

Today I'm talking with Nikita about the importance of support during and after pregnancy. A note from Nikita:Hi, I'm Nikita and I am mummy to two, experienced primary school teacher, mental health first aider, breastfeeding peer supporter and founder of Story Sense and Mumma & Me. I live on the beautiful South Devon coast of England. I was a primary school teacher for 7 years before having my little boy. At this point, I found a love of working with babies and learning about their development. Wanting to keep my teaching close to me, I set up Story Sense which are unique sensory story classes which promote a love of books and stories through engaging and exciting activities which run in the South Hams.Becoming a parent is a daunting time, with so many unknowns. There is so much information out there which can be overwhelming and support can feel hard to accept and reach out for when you are supposed to just 'get on with it.' I created the Mumma & Me Collections to provide support and evidence based information across a whole range of areas from mental health support to 1:1 feeding support, financial support and advice from a professional, key developmental milestones information for your baby or toddler and activity ideas, a range of online baby and toddler classes for you to try at home, music downloads and a singalong to join in with and a friendly and supportive Facebook community where you can continue to ask questions and learn more about you and your developing little one and build a support network of others at the same place on their journey. Business is about standing out from the crowd, so how does a small firm of solicitors make its mark? It's not just the fixed fees and the focus on areas of real expertise, it's also the long days touring the South Hams with free legal surgeries & the networking too, not to mention the charitable work. Listening to Rebecca you can see how all this hard work comes together along with a generous dollop of the personal touch and a sprinkling of humour. There's a lesson for us all in the journey too...
