Cattle Industry News Trump's Tariffs Trigger Chinese Retaliation, Impacting U.S. Meat Exports President Donald Trump ordered new tariffs on Chinese goods, raising total duties to 104% starting Wednesday in response to China's retaliation against earlier U.S. measures. In return, China imposed steep tariffs on U.S. meat—56% on beef and 81% on pork—effective Thursday, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. This move threatens a major market, as China and Hong Kong were the third-largest U.S. pork buyers at $1.14 billion and the second-largest for beef at nearly $2 billion last year. Meanwhile, Mexico—America's top pork buyer—has not yet responded to separate U.S. tariffs outside the USMCA agreement. The American President Donald Trump wants farmers in the US to produce more for the domestic market as the rows over import tariffs continue. So what might this all this mean for them, for us and for global trade? For This Natural Life, this week on on BBC Radio 4, Martha Kearney visited Sir James Dyson on his farm in Somerset to hear what the natural world means to him, and how that is being reflected in his approach to farming.Bird flu continues to hit poultry farms across the country. Last week we heard from Jerry Saunders, from Orchard Organic Farm in South Devon, about the emotional toll of having all 5000 of his birds culled after getting bird flu. We hear how the financial impact can be severe, too. Broadband speeds in rural areas are 26% slower than they are in urban areas - that's according to the Government, and there are still parts of the country that have no mobile phone access at all. We speak to Chris Bryant, the minister with responsibility for digital inclusion, about the Government's Digital Inclusion Action Plan.New rules for the pig supply chain are due to be introduced this spring to help even up what Defra describes as a 'power imbalance' between farmers and processors.Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
(Conversation recorded on December 11th, 2024) The past century has been marked by the rise of globalization in every sense of the word - through production, culture, agriculture, consumption and more. This trend has brought great wealth and opportunities to many people - but what have we lost and forgotten through this process? In this Reality Roundtable, Nate is joined by members of the bioregioning movement, Daniel Christian Wahl, Samantha Power, and Isabel Carlisle, to discuss the necessity of reconnecting to our local places for the sake of addressing our ecological, social, and economic challenges. In this fascinating exchange, Nate and his guests emphasize the need for decentralized governance and institutions, as well as communities organized around resilience and regeneration. How deep are the historical and indigenous ties of humanity to the bioregional way of life? In what ways can individuals begin to engage with their local bioregions and contribute to a regenerative future? Finally, how can more humans who are connected and in relationship with the land influence future societies and cultures to be more aligned to the well-being of all life? About Daniel Christian Wahl: Daniel Christian Wahl is one of the catalysts of the rising reGeneration and the author of ‘Designing Regenerative Cultures' - so far translated into seven languages. He works as a consultant, educator and activist with NGOs, businesses, governments and global change agents. With degrees in biology and holistic science and a PhD in Design for Human and Planetary Health, his work has influenced the emerging fields of regenerative design and salutogenic design. Daniel is winner of the 2021 RSA Bicentenary Medal for applying design in service to society and was awarded a two year Volans-Fellowship in 2022. About Samantha Power: Samantha Power is a Co-Founder and the Director of the BioFi Project and the Founder and Principal Consultant of Finance for Gaia. She is a Regenerative Economist, Futurist, and Bioregionalist based in Oakland, CA on the ancestral land of the Ohlone people. Samantha channeled her 15 years of experience learning and working in this space into a new book: 'Bioregional Financing Facilities: Reimagining Finance to Regenerate Our Planet'. The book makes the case for and explains how to build institutions to shift capital to place-based regenerators to achieve global climate and nature-related goals, while enabling the transition to regenerative economies. To turn this vision into a global movement, Samantha co-founded the BioFi Project — a collective of experts supporting bioregions around the world to design, build, and implement BFFs inspired by the templates laid out in the book. About Isabel Carlisle: Isabel Carlisle is a communicator, educator and large-scale project organiser. Her experience in the London art world (where her work included writing as an art critic for The Times and curating exhibitions at the Royal Academy) led her to set up and direct the Festival of Muslim Cultures that took place across Britain throughout 2006. Over 120 events in almost every conceivable art form brought audiences into contact with the Muslim world in order to build bridges of understanding between cultures. Isabel moved to South Devon in 2010 and created and led learning programmes for children and young adults with Transition Network. Since 2012 she has trained in Regenerative Development and Design with Regenesis. We had the pleasure of interviewing Nina Nesbitt over Zoom video!Singer-songwriter and producer and multi-instrumentalist, Nina Nesbitt releases her new album, Mountain Music. From exceeding a billion streams to being championed by Taylor Swift and playing shows with everyone from Coldplay to Stevie Nicks, Nina's career has taken her from highlight to highlight. Yet the release of her new album could well be the most significant moment to date. Not only is it a record that leans into an accomplished and engaging new sound, but it's also the first release via her new independent label Apple Tree Records.Mountain Music is a record in which authenticity flows through every moment. Its impetus was a moment of crisis: Nina had become overwhelmed by the need to be always active on social media and realized it was a huge distraction from her songwriting. So instead, she paused and went back to basics. What emerged was a set of songs which were informed, in part by the two years she spent touring the States in support of her second studio album: the critically acclaimed The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change, and partly by the Americana and US folk music that she has always loved. Their narratives also became more personal than ever. She reflected on everything that has happened in her life: growing up in a small Scottish village, breaking into music while living in the bustle of London, and now looking back at all of her life experiences from her new home in the countryside. While it might sound strange that Nesbitt was drawn to the music of Appalachia, heard echoing through the vast, verdant mountain ranges of the eastern United States, it makes more sense when you consider how traditional Scottish ballads and hymns are threads in that rich tapestry.Speaking about the new album, Nina Nesbitt reveals, “'Mountain Music' feels like the most authentic and honest piece of work I've created so far. I was inspired by a lot of the American folk music I grew up listening to, and revisiting it made me fall back in love with writing music again. I knew I wanted to take inspiration but to also write my own story. This album celebrates that small town girl, puts an arm around the big city twenty-something and looks back at the view with me now from the calm and the quiet. ‘Mountain Music' held my hand through some of my hardest moments and I hope it can hold yours too.”The album's organic, resonant feel also comes from a recording process which placed a sharper focus on the importance of live performances. Accompanied by a band of musicians, Peter Miles and Nina produced sessions at Middle Farm Studios in South Devon in the UK, with Peter completing the record with mixing and mastering. That sound is today further showcased as Nina shares the new Mountain Music Session performance of the album's closing track, “Parachute,” a swaying, romantic ballad that also addresses her introvert tendencies. Accompanied by a five-piece band, Nina leads a song which steadily grows in stature from sparse piano into a dramatic crescendo of sound. She's visibly lost within the moment, channeling her emotions into an affecting song which charts the self-doubt that she had prior to starting the album.Having recently enjoyed a big spotlight moment when she performed at Team Great Britain's Homecoming show live on BBC One to over 2 million viewers, and having just completed a dream tour as special guest to Stevie Nicks earlier this year, Nina plans to hit the road next month for a UK headline tour. For a list of upcoming tour dates, please visit ninanesbittmusic.com.Stay tuned for more music and live dates, coming soon!We want to hear from you! As one of the world's leading manufacturers of model railways, PECO is a forward-looking family business that started trading back in 1946. Initially concentrating its manufacturing skills on the production of trackwork for model railway enthusiasts, the company has grown exponentially. To support its expansion, the Devon company relies on VISI CAD/CAM/CAE software from Hexagon in its design and manufacturing facility. Located on the idyllic South Devon coast, PECO is a company that has expanded from its humble beginnings of manufacturing individual components to producing HO/OO ready-made track and then on to all things ‘model railway'. This includes ‘Pecorama' one of Devon's leading tourist attractions that has a model railway exhibition and model shop, a ride-on miniature steam railway, a gallery and award-winning gardens as well as industry-leading model railway publications. As a company with a ‘fan base' as well as a customer base, PECO is a world-renowned brand in the model rail industry. From the foundations that stem from manufacturing a simple coupling, PECO now runs a facility that makes over 3,000 product lines. Discussing this, Simon Cockerham from PECO says: “We make everything that is part of the hobby building model railway industry. We have been in business since the 1940s and we started as a company making very small couplings that hook two pieces of rolling stock together. It has expanded from there to a business that makes everything from concepts right through to the final product.” With a manufacturing site that hosts state-of-the-art technology, PECO relies on VISI CAD/CAM/CAE software for its workflows. As Simon continues: “We use VISI throughout our manufacturing facility, from concept through to the final press or mould tool being created. We have numerous licences of VISI throughout our many departments and we also use VISI to generate laser-cut wooden kits for customers with textures upon them. It is also used to create the instructions that will guide enthusiasts and users on how to assemble the equipment.” “VISI has always been very good for our business as it focuses on just what you need to do the job. Some other software packages that we had before VISI had caused issues due to the high tolerancing of our components and the very deep nature of the machining processes that we have to undertake to achieve the geometries that we require in our press and mould tools.” As one of the world's leading PC-based CAD/CAE/CAM software solutions, VISI incorporates modules such as Modelling, Analysis, Mould Design, Flow, Electrode Design, Die Tool Design, 2.5, 3 and 5-axis Toolpaths, Blanks and Reverse. This provides PECO with the facility to create solid models; design, analyse, validate and prepare mould tool geometries as well as the pre and post-production analysis of plastic parts. With dedicated modules for creating electrodes, designing dedicated progressive die design and press tools, comprehensive machining strategies and even reverse engineering of editable solid models from scanned data – VISI provides the complete package for the company. As Simon adds: “One of the key reasons that we have VISI in our environment and we have been customers for almost 17 years – is because it is very reliable and comprehensive. We have an intimate knowledge of the VISI environment and systems throughout our experienced generations of designers and toolmakers who are here. This means we have the experience to support more junior members of the team here - but even we need assistance now and again because every engineer looks at things differently from time to time.” “Another key reason why we use VISI is down to the complexity of our products. We need jobs to be correct the first time. We also use very expensive machine tools from Roders, Sodick and Hurco as well as high-end peripheral equipment and cutting tools, and VISI has always kept us safe throughout the entire process of generating these tools.” The holistic Hexagon mould and die workflow removes blockers so the team can try new ideas. Simon explained: “We use VISI throughout most of our departments, especially within the wider ‘innovations department'. This means we use VISI for everything from design to producing wooden laser-cut kits for the factory to producing custom machinery for our production facilities. We also use VISI for all of our press and mould tooling too. The benefits of having VISI in the workplace are the integration between plot view, CAD/CAM, and the ability to create surface translations for mould flow analysis and laser ablation files. It streamlines integration between departments.” Many other features the business needs are all connected within a single environment, which makes PECO's training and application of VISI a lot easier for everybody concerned. Over the 17 years PECO has standardised its workflows on Hexagon's mould and die software its had a positive impact on its business. Simon concludes: “We know we have saved a lot of time and money with VISI. The savings are down to the VISI software having all of the components and modules that we require to take our products from concept through to production and export all around the world – all from under one roof.”

Was gefällt Ihnen am Podcast? Was nicht?

These reports provide critical data and the decision to end them is completely misguided. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane said “It is disingenuous for the same agency which touts its commitment to transparency in livestock markets to arbitrarily cease publication of reports which provide just that. While it may be politically expedient to blame appropriators in Congress for today's decision, cattle producers know better than to believe discontinuing a handful of reports will result in substantial cost savings for the Department.” He went on to say that “NCBA calls on USDA-NASS to immediately reverse this decision and continue delivering on its stated mission of providing timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture.” For the complete article click HERE UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS Montgomery Ranch: April 13, 2024, Carrington, North Dakota Jorgensen Farms: April 15, 2024, Ideal, South Dakota DLCC Ranch: April 20, 2024, Pierz, Minnesota BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms Upstream Ranch Gustin's Diamond D Gelbvieh Schiefelbein Farms Wasem Red Angus Raven Angus Krebs Ranch Yon Family Farms Chestnut Angus Eichacker Simmentals & JK Angus Windy Creek Cattle Company Pedersen Broken Heart Ranch Mar Mac Farms Warner Beef Genetics Arda Farms & Freeway Angus Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen RBM Livestock Weber Land & Cattle Sundsbak Farms Hidden Angus Wheatland Cattle Company Miller Angus Farms L 83 Ranch U2 Ranch Vollmer Angus Ranch A & B Cattle Carter Angus Farms FEATURING Cody Jorgensen Jorgensen Land & Cattle https://jorgensenfarms.com/ @JorLandCat Lane Giess DLCC Ranch https://www.dlccranch.com/ @DLCCRanch Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/ @StoneXGroupInc Mark Van Zee Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos Questions & Concerns From The Field? DLCC RANCH: An Elite South Devon Cattle Supplier Focused On Maternal Genetics DLCC is a South Devon seedstock operation committed to helping commercial cattlemen achieve profitability through crossbreeding and maternal heterosis. Our program strives to produce the most profitable genetics for our customer's bottom line. This can only be done by trusting science and using it in all of our decisions. Research shows that crossbred females produce an average of one additional calf and over 600 more pounds of weaning weight than straightbred dams (NBCEC Sire Selection Manual). We are proud of how we've followed this principle with – whole herd reporting, data collection on every animal born, strict AI regimes, ultrasound data collection, and new and novel data. These practices produce “honest cattle, that give you real results.” How DLCC Ranch Breeds Cattle We believe in crossbreeding and the effects it brings our customers. South Devon cattle provide flexibility along with many desired economically relevant traits: Outcross English Genetics Feed Efficient Hybrids Black-hided Bulls with Heavy Muscling Red Bulls with a Balanced Genetic Profile South Devon History South Devon cattle, while less prevalent than in the past, first arrived in the United States in 1969 and then again in 1974. Both red and black varieties of South Devons are now widely accessible across the globe. The infection, only the second human case of H5N1 ever recorded in the country, is worrying public health experts who for decades have cautioned that avian flu could pose a serious threat. The case is the only one state and federal officials have identified, and there is no evidence that it is being spread among humans. The illness is mild and the worker is expected to recover, said two people familiar with the matter. While there have been confirmed avian flu fatalities in other parts of the world, the U.S. has only ever recorded a handful of mild cases, according to the CDC. The new human case follows recent cow infections in Texas, Idaho, Michigan and New Mexico that have raised alarm among public health experts who worry the virus' spread to mammals could make it easier for the virus to infect humans. The CDC, FDA and U.S. Department of Agriculture said the virus was found in a Michigan dairy herd that had recently received cows from herds in Texas. The USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories said the Michigan strain is very similar to the cow infections in Texas and Kansas, which appear to have come from wild birds. 2024 Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour The 2024 Stockmanship and Stewardship Tour is getting ready to hit the road. Spanish farmers in Madrid have held more protests, despite the European Commission announcing a review of its so-called 'green deal' which was designed to help the EU reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Farmers across Europe have voiced their anger at red tape and new environmental rules. Last week the Commission published a raft of proposed changes, which still have to be agreed. It says it'll cut back on red tape, allow individual member states more freedom over new 'greening' rules, and remove the demand that farmers must put a certain percentage of their land over to the environment. Conservationists have criticised the move as a backward step for the environment. The UK gets through around £68 million worth of scampi a year. but a conservation group says the current drive to make fishing for langoustine more environmentally friendly has failed. How sustainable is our scampi? We speak to a fisherman and an environmental campaigner. The Office for Environmental Protection is investigating whether there's been a failure to comply with the law governing Special Protection Areas for wild birds, in Northern Ireland and England. A similar investigation is being undertaken in Scotland, while in Wales there are concerns about how these sites are being run. S.P.A.s are legally designated sites that protect rare and threatened wild birds. The OEP says it's taking action because the recommendations from a review of these sites between 2015 and 2017 has still not been published.A new National Nature Reserve's been created on the South Devon coast at Budleigh Salterton. The Lower Otter Estuary is home to Dartford warblers, silver-studded blue butterflies, populations of sea trout, Atlantic salmon and eels.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

In episode 298 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on the importance of the 'why' over the 'how' in photography, avoiding the need for a 'style' and why subject matter should be based on your passions and interests. Plus this week, photographer Virginia Turbett takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Virginia Turbett was born in 1957 in rural West Sussex and is a British rock music and social reportage photographer best known for her photographs of bands, fans and street culture between the years of 1977 and 1987. In 1977 Turbett was asked by a good friend to photograph the Sex Pistols recording Pretty Vacant for Slash magazine. A year, and many punk gigs later, a chance meeting with a Sounds journalist led to a collaboration which lasted a few years – photographing Punk, Rock, Pop, Heavy Metal, Mods, New Romantics, Skinheads, Two-Tone, Ska, Reggae, the fans, style and fashion of the time. At the same time, Turbett was working on a left-wing paper photographing social and political stories. In 1979 she was asked by the Editor of Smash Hits magazine, to photograph features and interviews and she continued working on the magazine until she gave up photography to look after her two children in 1987. Turbett contributed to many magazines of the late 70's and 80's including The Face, Sounds, Smash Hits, and Record Mirror creating images of artists and musicians including the Pistols, Clash, Blondie, Iggy, Andy Warhol, Frank Zappa and Nick Cave. Turbutt now works from her home in South Devon selling prints from her archive and contributing to publications, films and TV, exhibitions and record covers. https://virginiaturbett.com Dr.Grant Scott After fifteen years art directing photography books and magazines such as Elle and Tatler, Scott began to work as a photographer for a number of advertising and editorial clients in 2000. Alongside his photographic career Scott has art directed numerous advertising campaigns, worked as a creative director at Sotheby's, art directed foto8magazine, founded his own photographic gallery, edited Professional Photographer magazine and launched his own title for photographers and filmmakers Hungry Eye. He founded the United Nations of Photography in 2012, and is now a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, and a BBC Radio contributor. Scott is the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Routledge 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Routledge 2019), and What Does Photography Mean To You? (Bluecoat Press 2020). His photography has been published in At Home With The Makers of Style (Thames & Hudson 2006) and Crash Happy: A Night at The Bangers (Cafe Royal Books 2012). His film Do Not Bend: The Photographic Life of Bill Jay was premiered in 2018. Scott's next book Inside Vogue House: One building, seven magazines, sixty years of stories, Orphans Publishing, is now on pre-sale. © Grant Scott 2024

The Devil's Footprints was a phenomenon that occurred during February 1855 around the Exe Estuary in East and South Devon, England. After a heavy snowfall, trails of hoof-like marks appeared overnight in the snow covering a total distance of some 40 to 100 miles (60 to 160 km). The footprints were so called because some persons suggested that they were the tracks of Satan and made comparisons to a cloven hoof. Many theories have been made to explain the incident, and some aspects of its veracity have also been questioned.Support the pod:www.patreon.com/monsterfuzzCheck out our merch:https://monster-fuzz.creator-spring.comEverything else!www.linktr.ee/monsterfuzz
The Dawlish sea wall, a historic and iconic structure, has long served as a critical link connecting South Devon and Cornwall to the rest of the UK. Its rich history and importance in facilitating transportation have made it a symbol of resilience. However, after a storm in 2014 the wall collapsed and left the train...
There is one question the environmental journalist and author George Monbiot is asked more than any other: how do you cope? When your job is to report on the climate crisis, where do you find hope? Monbiot's answer is a very personal one: he goes sea kayaking – alone, often far off the coast, with (if he's lucky) a pod of dolphins or a flock of shearwaters for company. In this evocative essay from the New Statesman's summer 2023 issue, Monbiot explores the sea off the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, his former home in Cardigan Bay, and his new home in South Devon – a coastline “featuring cliffs and rocky coves, clefts and chasms, reefs and skerries, sandy and shingle beaches and several estuaries”. He relives the dangers and joys of battling the waves in a very small boat, most recently with an underwater camera fixed to the hull. There is no permanent escape from ecological distress, he writes, from the warming seas and the waste pumped into them, “but for hours at a time, I lose myself”.Written by George Monbiot and read by Chris Stone. This article originally appeared in the 28 July-17 August 2023 New Statesman summer issue. As you'll know by now, one of our core motivators in creating this podcast was the realisation that the 'democratic' systems of the world are largely broken and are not a useful way to affect change. I used to be a political activist. I thought I'd given all that up, but today's conversation has definitely re-awakened my political instincts because today I'm talking with two of the people who set up South Devon Primary: a group committed to changing the political system in the UK. So the first thing to say for those of you who live elsewhere is that this episode is focused on the need for change in the Westminster Parliament. But the issues are worldwide and whatever your political system, it could probably do with being shaken up. We need to share best practice across the globe and what Simon Oldridge, Anthea Simmons and Ben Long have created feels like a template that could be replicated not just throughout the UK but across the world. The principles are basic and while it's not going to take us to full democracy in one giant leap, it's definitely a step in the right direction. If adopted around the nation (and the world) it could see us move away from the politics of hatred, fear and resentment to something a great deal more generative. To look at these three in more depth and so understand where they're coming from: Simon Oldridge was an accountant with Ernst and Young and then CEO of a manufacturing company. More recently, his awareness of the climate and ecological crisis has led him to engage with a group endeavouring to put forward a Climate and Ecology Bill to the UK parliament (he talks about this in the podcast) and to set up the South Devon Primary campaign which you'll hear about in much more depth. Anthea Simmons is Editor in Chief of the progressive online paper, West Country Voices, speaker for Devon for Europe and author of a number of books, including one for young climate activists. Before that, rather like Simon, she worked in financial asset management. She's a passionate advocate for the South Devon Primary and invented the Democracy Meter, which you're also hear about in the conversation. Ben Long is an author and educator and currently helps his partner run her ceramics business in Devon. He didn't join us on the podcast - partly because I think two extra voices is enough to contend with - but he's a core part of the work of South Devon Primary. And that work is practical, active, really intelligently targeted and if it were taken up around the country, could do more, I think, to shape the outcome of the next general election than anything else I've found. Listen, enjoy - and then make this happen as near to wherever you live as you can. Torrential rainfall had caused flash floods along the coastal Cliff Road in Salcombe, South Devon. Once there was a break in the clouds on that remarkably wet summer day, holiday goers seized the opportunity to make the most of their vacation. In 1855, as the town of South Devon went to bed for the evening, they would awaken to find that snow had fallen but more importantly, foot prints had been left behind. After finding them, this would send the town into a bit of a chaos because nobody could figure out exactly what they were or what left them behind. Following them, they would find they ran for 40 to 100 miles. Unsure of what caused them, theories would come out but not one theory could satisfy the parameters. So what caused it? Lets discuss that in todays episode!
Nicky Button was born in Gloucester and grew up in Worcester. Having a very happy childhood. Nicky was always last to be picked for any teams at school and was the most uncoordinated and non sporty child being told to go and swim after a term of tennis when she still hadn't hit a ball. Her teens and twenties removed around horses and children , whilst she ran a yard starting and schooling young horses and teaching people to ride alongside being a foster mother. In 2000 with an eight year old daughter she moved to Surrey where she spotted a group of people kayaking on a local canal, she went along to the club and heard only two parts of the sentence, Wednesday nights are adults only, whitewater training and we go to the pub afterwards. Six months later she was staring at her first White water river in Wales. Several swims later and at the end of the river she was hooked. The kayaking totally changed her life and she soon realised that whilst she certainly wasn't the most proficient, she had found her tribe. Through the kayaking she was invited to help on set on Midsummer Murders and the rest as they say is history, she retrained learning swift water and rope rescue, working at heights and confined spaces, with fire and setting up stunts and rigging. There then followed some incredible years where she felt that she was being paid to have the best time in life. In 2013 after going away skiing she returned and was unable to see her daughter across the room. Four months later she'd had her driving license removed which knocked onto no job and then no home. Her life felt as though it was falling apart. She moved to South Devon and stormed along the South West Coast path. A few years on and she was part of walking groups for people with Visual Impairment and encouraging people to get out walking. On moving to Worcester in 2021 she met an amazing group of strangers who became friends, a trip up Ben Nevis was followed by entering her first Ultra challenge a 50km over Exmoor. When she completed that she looked for her next challenge. During lockdown she'd dreamed she'd walked from Scotland to Devon, she decided to make this a reality and so Nicky's most marvellous ridiculous adventure was born. Poppy Okotcha describes herself as an ecological home grower working to inspire reconnection to the land and the living world through the story of food and herbs. She came to gardening after a shift in her personal life: having moved between the UK and South Africa during her childhood, Poppy had a career as a model. When she was left burnt out by the fashion industry, she began to cultivate a slower kind of life, growing organically on top of a canal boat in London and learning about biodynamic and regenerative growing. We were invited into her magical, Tardis-like garden in South Devon, where Poppy tends to a space that has been grown on for centuries, sharing her gentle stewardship of the land with her considerable social media platform. This podcast is inspired by my book, Why Women Grow: Stories of Soil, Sisterhood and Survival, which is out on March 2nd and available to pre-order now. The Why Women Grow podcast is produced by Holly Fisher, and theme music is by Maria Chiara Argiro. Thank you to our partners at Seedlip. We've also been photographing our guests and their gardens and you can see the beautiful images captured by Siobhan Watts on my instagram account @noughticulture.
Big Rich Boughton lives in South Devon, and it was on the journeys to see Rich at his home spot of Bantham that Liam and I came up with the idea of starting to record a podcast to see if anyone was interested in our ramblings. Rich runs www.Kitebarn.co.uk - a front of house website to showcase his online retail outlet as well as his kite and wing repair business. In his 'spare' time, Rich is the technical editor of 'The Foiling Magazine' and 'The Kite Mag' (the latter of which his wife Sarah is the editor for). The Boughtons also used to distribute JN kites in the UK, way back when twin tipping was still a thing..... You can say they're well versed in the watersports and windsports industry in the UK, and it definitely won't be the last time we sit down with Richy. Having always generally preferred to work in the background of the industry, Richy was sceptical about getting involved in a podcast episode until now, when i asked him to jump in and help while Liam was away - Hopefully you'll all agree that his knowledge and charm well deserves air time! His work with the magazines as their chief testerer means he's played on almost every foil you can imagine, and his repair work means he's worked with every wing as well (including our own) This first episode with Rich discusses the history of Banthams ever growing foiling journey, as well as his favourite foils and what he uses them for. We then also have a little discussion at the end on Gong as a brand - this definitely could be delved into deeper in the future! Enjoy Episode 12 - please rate us 5 stars on Spotify and Subscribe for info on our next episodes!
