This podcast is dedicated to the perpetuation of Modern Western Square Dancing. Every Sunday, a new episode is released presenting square dance recordings along with narration by your host, Buddy Weaver. You will hear live dances that were captured on tape or studio albums from the Blue Star Records catalog, which have been digitally remastered. Whether you are a square dance enthusiast or someone with an affection for America's Folk Dance, this podcast is a great resource about Modern Western Square Dancing.

    This episode is an encore featuring Blue Star Records 1001, the first long-play album featuring Marshall Flippo. Released in June 1961 and an excellent representation of the square dance music, calls, and style of the time.  For today's dancer, you may notice there are none of the "Ocean Wave" calls that are so popular today.  The pace of dancing is a bit quicker and is true "wind-in-your-face" dancing.  Marshall Flippo was the master of moving dancers smoothly from call to call.     Jerry Jestin, one of the most innovative callers when it came to choreography and presentation, is featured.  Jerry who started calling as a youth in his native Canada went on to travel the world as a professional caller.  He recorded many hits on many labels and was a true pioneer in the square and round dance activity in Yuma, Arizona.  Calling while his wife, Janice taught clogging, they built a very successful winter program from 1984 to 2018, when they retired.     The Sets In Order organization which published Square Dancing Magazine had by 1970 established two lists of calls that made up Modern Square Dancing.  The introductory list was called the 50 Basics with the next list called Extended 75 Basics, which represented club level dancing.   In addition to these lists were calls that were newly created and experiencing some dancer popularity.  They were referred to as "experimental calls".  This album includes the experimental calls from 1972.     The Sets In Order organization which published Square Dancing Magazine had by 1970 established two lists of calls that made up Modern Square Dancing.  The introductory list was called the 50 Basics with the next list called Extended 75 Basics.  These 75 calls were what represented an average club dance in 1972 and would be the forerunner of the original CALLERLAB Mainstream Program.     Lee Helsel one of the more recognized names on the travel calling circuit in the 1950s and 1960s.  He maintained a strong home program in Sacramento, California, held down a full-time job for the State of California and flew out almost every weekend for festivals and conventions.  He kept this pac until his retirement in 1980. By 1971, "Sets" had developed two lists that would standardize which calls all dancers may be expected to know.  Standardization of this kind would make it possible for dancers to travel the world and be able to find dancing that would be comfortable for them.  This album represents the entry level 50 calls plus twenty-five "EXTENDED BASICS" along with EXPERIMENTAL CALLS.  These were calls that were trying to become part of everyday square dancing.     Ron Schneider was a popular caller in the middle to eastern part of the US, starting in the sixties and through the eighties.  He started calling the old time squares as a boy in Ohio, later graduating to modern western square dancing.  By 1960, he had become a much sought after caller and his name spread through his recordings on the Grenn Record label.  Ron was known for calling challenging material.   This dance was recorded in 1960 in Massachusetts.   Please help to keep this podcast meet it's production cost by making a contribution.     The second long-play album produced by Merl Olds, owner of Hi Hat Records in collaboration with CBS  to promote square dancing, here is an album of easy dances.  Although one or two calls are no longer used in beginner dances, the overall recording is ideal for beginners and an excellent resource for SSD dancers/callers. Music is by Hi Hat Records.  Calling is by Lee Schmidt, who has been featured in the BWM podcast before.  He was an excellent caller and singer who limited his travels to the western states, where he was greatly sought after.   From the Gloria Schmidt collection. The tiers or levels of square dancing was developed by Sets In Order for the interests of the hobby dancer as well as the dance enthusiast.  To promote these levels of dancing, SIO produced two long-play recordings featuring the "big names" of square dancing.  Here now is the gold album for the hobby dancer.     One of the most recognized names in Modern Western Square Dancing today is that of Wade Driver.  Wade has been calling since the early sixties and by the seventies was a full-time traveling caller featured at festivals around the world. Wade started Rhythm Records in the seventies, a major square dance record label which changed the musical style of square dancing in a big way.  His musical influences left an indelible impression on square dancing and square dance calling, for which Wade was recognized with a CALLERLAB Milestone Award.     The Sets In Order organization, started in 1948 as a monthly square dance magazine along with a record label producing music with and without calls for square dancing.   Under the direction of Bob Osgood, Sets In Order would branch out into educational resources, printed and recorded along with institutes for dancers and callers.  Many point to Sets In Order and Bob Osgood as the major force behind the evolution of Modern Western Square Dancing. Released in April 1976 as Blue Star 1032.  It was the American Bi-Centennial and there was lots of interest in everything 1776.  This album of Quadrilles, was an homage to the cotillion dances from that time.     Few callers have been as popular and active for as many years as Al Brundage.  He started calling in 1933 and continued to end of the century.  A remarkable figure who recognized the growing popularity of Modern Western Square Dancing and introduced it to New England.  His exciting calling style grew a huge following in the Eastern States.  A full-time traveling caller, a pioneer in caller education, a recording artist, and a founding member of CALLERLAB.
