Episode #545: Measuring the Unmeasurable: Agency, IQ, and the Men Who Change History

Crazy Wisdom

In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, Stewart Alsop sits down with Kieran Zimmer — a software developer and independent researcher in psychology and psychometrics — to explore the science behind intelligence and personality. They trace the origins of psychometrics from Wilhelm Wundt's early experimental psychology through Charles Spearman's discovery of the g factor, breaking down what IQ actually measures, how verbal, mathematical, and spatial intelligence relate to one another, and why training specific cognitive tasks doesn't translate into a broader boost in general intelligence. The conversation moves into the Big Five personality traits reframed through a cybernetic lens — looking at extraversion as reward sensitivity, agreeableness as social affiliation, and conscientiousness as long-term goal prioritization — before landing on Kieran's original research into the psychology of agency: what personality profile best predicts agentic behavior, and why the environment shapes whether agency is even adaptive in the first place.Show notes:Substack: Liminal RevolutionsTwitter/X: @LiminalRevYouTube: @TheKieranZimmer (to listen to Kieran's conference talk on the agency paper)Timestamps00:00 — Stewart and Kieran trace the origins of psychometrics back to Spearman, Binet, and Wilhelm Wundt's early experimental psychology.05:00 — The conversation unpacks the g factor, fluid vs. crystallized intelligence, and why IQ is fundamentally a physical trait tied to nerve conduction velocity.10:00 — A tangent into AI and LLMs: why they lack vision, taste, judgment, and accountability — the human moat that remains for now.15:00 — Stewart's Claude Code failure sparks a discussion on AI accountability, surveillance, and the rise of dystopian technocracy.20:00 — Parallel structures as a form of exit from failing institutions, and the high-agency people required to build them.25:00 — Agency, risk-taking, and accountability through Napoleon, the Inuit, and why modern Western leaders are managers, not leaders.30:00 — Elites vs. peasants, cost externalization, and Kirk Doolittle's natural law as the physics of cooperation.35:00 — Ressentiment, Nietzsche's under-utilization in psychology, and how secularism replaced the church.40:00 — Kieran's quantitative conspiracy theory study: factor analysis of 85 questions across 273 respondents.45:00 — Two branches of conspiracy belief: the aliens-and-Satanism cluster vs. the fakery factor pathway to Flat Earth.50:00 — AI psychosis, Gnosticism, and the collapse of sense-making institutions in an age of information overload.55:00 — Michael Levin's embodied cognition and cybernetic agency: thermostats, humans, and homeostatic set points.1:00:00 — The Cybernetic Big Five broken down: extraversion as reward sensitivity, agreeableness, neuroticism, and the optimal personality profile for agency.Key InsightsIQ is a physical trait, not just an abstract score. It's rooted in nerve conduction velocity, brain connectivity, and processing speed — and while you can improve crystallized intelligence through learning, the underlying g factor doesn't budge no matter how many brain training apps you use.The human moat against AI comes down to four things: vision, taste, judgment, and accountability. LLMs are powerful next-token predictors, but they have no stake in the outcome and no capacity to own a mistake — which means a human with those qualities will always be essential.High agency is not just ambition — it's a measurable psychological profile. Kieran's paper frames it through the Cybernetic Big Five: high assertiveness, high intellect, low politeness, low neuroticism, and medium conscientiousness. Getting things done at scale almost always involves upsetting people. All agentic behavior involves risk, and the willingness to absorb that risk is what separates real leaders from managers. Modern Western leadership has decoupled decision-making from consequence, which is why institutions are losing trust and authority at an accelerating rate.Conspiracy belief follows a measurable path dependency. Kieran's factor analysis showed that virtually everyone who believes in Flat Earth also endorses the fakery factor and the Jewish question cluster — but not vice versa. It's a spectrum with a clear escalation pattern, not a random set of unrelated beliefs.AI is accelerating epistemic breakdown. Sycophantic models will validate almost any idea, which has started producing a new category of high-IQ delusion — intelligent people convincing themselves they've solved Millennium Prize problems because the AI kept agreeing with them. The Big Five personality traits can be recast as cybernetic parameters — each one an evolutionarily selected mechanism for regulating goal-directed behavior. Extraversion is reward sensitivity, agreeableness is social affiliation, neuroticism is threat response, and conscientiousness is the preference for long-term over short-term goals.

What can uncontacted tribes teach us about trust, status, and connection? Psychologist Guillaume Dulude treks into the wild to find out.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1318What We Discuss with Guillaume Dulude:Guillaume Dulude doesn't use language to build trust with uncontacted tribes — he relies on eye contact, body language, and patience, proving that human connection is fundamentally nonverbal and precedes words.Giving gifts to isolated communities often backfires: it shifts the dynamic from relationship to transaction, conditions tribes to expect objects from outsiders, and corrupts future interactions — even well-intentioned ones.Traditional tribes operate on earned respect rather than self-declared worth. Status requires proof — skills, contributions, demonstrated value — a stark contrast to modern culture's obsession with self-esteem untethered from action.Tribal communities have clear rites of passage that mark transitions between life stages. Modern Western culture largely lacks these — leaving people without meaningful, socially recognized ways to grow from one phase of life to the next.Anyone can learn to build meaningful cross-cultural connection. Guillaume's methods — mirroring, earning trust before asking anything, staying curious — are trainable skills. Approach new people with humility, let them teach you something, and let the relationship lead. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Are Different Roles for Men and Women Still Biblical? | 1 Corinthians 11:7-12

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Our shout-out today goes to David Legget from Somerset, KY. Thanks for your partnership in Project23. We cannot do this without donors like you. Our text today is 1 Corinthians 11:7-12. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. — 1 Corinthians 11:7-12 Paul now addresses the tension readers feel but rarely express. If men and women are equal before God, why does Scripture speak about different roles at all? That tension has not materialized in a vacuum. Modern Western history—shaped by movements like women's suffrage, the temperance movement, and subsequently waves of feminism—has pushed back against real abuses and injustices of women. But in reacting to oppression outside the church, many have come to view any talk of distinction or authority inside the church as innately suspect. Paul's answer is very specific here. He begins with the biological creation of humanity. Man and woman were both made in the image of God. That truth is settled in Genesis before sin ever entered the picture. Equality of worth is never in question. But Paul also affirms a design distinction. Man and woman are not interchangeable. They were created with different roles that together reflect God's design and glory. Paul appeals to creation order—progenitor order—not to establish superiority, but to ground responsibility and mutual dependence. This is where confusion often arises. The difference between the genders is often mistaken for a deficiency in women, and Paul rejects that logical fallacy. He says that woman is the glory of man, not as a statement of inferiority, but as a statement of relational origin and purpose. Just as man reflects God's glory as his image-bearer, woman reflects the glory of God's design for shared life, partnership, and mutual dependence. Then Paul adds an important safeguard. "Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman." — 1 Corinthians 11:11 Any reading of this passage that elevates one gender at the expense of the other is already wrong. Interdependence is the point. Men and women need one another. Leadership exercised without humility, accountability, and partnership distorts God's design. Submission divorced from dignity, agency, and honor misrepresents God's character. Paul even grounds this in biology and providence. Though woman was formed from man (the progenitor) in creation, every man since has come through a woman. No one stands alone. No one boasts. And Paul closes the section with the ultimate correction: "All things are from God." — 1 Corinthians 11:12 Authority does not originate with men. Glory does not terminate with women. Everything flows from God and returns to God. Different roles do not diminish value. They magnify God's wisdom. The problem is not difference. The problem is pride—either demanding dominance or rejecting design. Paul calls the church to something better. A vision shaped by Christ. Mutual honor that reflects his humility. Shared dependence that mirrors his body. God-centered glory that points not to ourselves—but back to him. DO THIS: Examine where cultural narratives about equality, power, or independence may be shaping your view of men and women more than Scripture. Ask God to realign your thinking with his Christ-shaped design for mutual honor and shared dependence. ASK THIS: Where do I confuse sameness with equality? How does Paul's emphasis on interdependence help me see roles as a gift rather than a threat? What would Christlike, mutual honor look like in my relationships and in the life of the church? PRAY THIS: God, thank you for creating men and women with equal worth and distinct roles. Guard me from pride that demands dominance or resists your design. Shape my heart to reflect the humility of Christ, so that my life brings glory back to you. Amen. PLAY THIS: "All Glory Be to Christ"

Manuela Ceballos' new book Between Dung and Blood: Purity, Sainthood, and Power in the Early Modern Western Mediterranean (University of California Press, 2025) engages with the life and legacies of two sixteenth-century saints; the Spanish Christian Teresa de Jesús (also known as Teresa of Avila) and the Moroccan Sufi Sidi Ridwan al-Januwi. The book draws from rich Arabic and Spanish sources that moves us between Morocco and Iberia. In the process, we learn that these saints both descent from families of converts and as such blood and bodily pollution operated as material and metaphoric symbols to define their identities. Through this generative comparison, we see how constructions of blood and dung circulate across these varied but entangled temporal geographies to constitute notions of impurity and purity, such as in the case of the deathly hemorrhaging experienced by Teresa. In end though blood is used to set different boundaries around religious or racial identities, and even at times gender norms. As such, the discourses that are utilized for such argumentations are not stable, and so blood and how it is deployed is not the same across the stories of these two saints and their enduring legacies nor does it refract power consistently. This book will be of interest to those who think about embodiment, material culture, the early modern Mediterranean world, and Christian-Muslim mysticism. In this week's podcast episode in the Nutrition After Breast Cancer: Just the Facts series, I bring up the study that sparked that concern. I don't ignore things like this. I don't pretend they don't exist. If there's research being talked about, I want you to know about it. But here are the actual facts. The study was done in mice. The mice were made to consume about 40% of their diet in olive oil. And the rest of their diet was an obesogenic, high-carbohydrate diet designed to promote weight gain and metabolic dysfunction. That is not a Mediterranean diet. That is not olive oil drizzled over vegetables and salmon. That is not real life. It was a laboratory model designed to stress metabolism. Context matters. One scene has you laughing at unchecked confidence. The next reminds you that this confidence has consequences, usually paid by family.Set in the oil fields of West Texas, the Taylor Sheridan-created series is still very much about power, money, and leverage, but Season 2 makes it harder to separate those things from the personal damage they cause. With her rootsy Americana sound and modern country edge, Sionán delivers everything she represents: honest storytelling, heartfelt ballads, and country-pop melodies built to move. It's the beginning of a new voice that speaks straight to the heart, and it's only the beginning. From a recent debut at Nashville's iconic Bluebird Café to a showcase slot at industry-tastemaker event Your Roots Are Showing - and with plenty of tracks to boot - Sionán's debut single ‘No Revival' leads the charge as she stakes her claim in the new era of country storytelling. With a hook that teases its unforgettable chorus and a guitar growling like a lone outlaw, ‘No Revival' rides in like a scene torn from a Modern Western, setting the stage for a raw, emotionally charged story of betrayal, heartbreak, and the bitter truth of romance unravelling. Stripped-back verses and authentic, roots-driven delivery pull you into the moment, before the powerhouse chorus kicks in - a blend of stomping backbeats, gunslinger riffs, and biting lyrical honesty. It's tongue-in-cheek, sophisticated, and deeply felt - part Carly Pearce "Truck on Fire", part Miley's “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart,” - the track then seamlessly shifts into a brass-fuelled Latin rhythm section with a New Orleans jazz flair, akin to Beyoncés "Daddy Lessons", and leaves the listener with a lasting impression long after the last note lingers. Written from the real-life moment of walking in on a partner, drunk at a bar and in someone else's arms, Sionán shares: “It's the gut-punch of realising someone you trusted has broken that bond. The song came from a moment of devastation, but also from the strength it takes to face that kind of truth head-on. For me, writing ‘No Revival' was about turning heartbreak into something that could speak to others who've been there." One for both the girls and the boys, 'No Revival' will connect with anyone who's ever been blindsided when the drinks are flowing & the truth comes out, caught in that all-too-familiar twist of love gone wrong. Think Yellowstone meets Virgin River for the backdrop; it delivers that modern Western edge with emotional depth. A standout debut sure to resonate with fans of the rising new-wave modern country movement, 'No Revival' is out on all platforms now.

In this episode I share a message from my great-grandmother, the last words she spoke to me before she died: "Don't let anyone step on you." I'm reflecting on the precious wisdom of elders, and the power of standing up for ourselves in a world that often tries to hold us down.Modern Western society has largely disconnected us from our elders and their wisdom, by separating generations from one another physically, socially, and spiritually. That is one reason so many of us are divided, misguided, and lost, and it's one of the roots of the separation sickness of modern culture. But deep connection still lives in our ancestral memory, and it's a path toward wholeness in a fragmented world. Reconnecting to the fullness of being human includes reconnecting our stories to the stories of those who came before us. If you still have access to your elders, listen to their stories. If they've passed, honor them by the way you live, knowing that their wisdom lives on in you. And don't let anyone step on you.I honor your memory, Grandma Agnes, by telling your story.

In this weeks episode of inverted Orthodoxy, Pastors Kyle, Blake, and Doug answer the following long form question: Negative Impact of Modern Western Culture on Biblical MarriageModern Western cultures often prioritize individualism, personal fulfillment, and egalitarian values, which can conflict with traditional Biblical views of marriage. The emphasis on equality sometimes leads to the reinterpretation or rejection of roles traditionally seen as complementary in a Christian marriage. This cultural shift can create tension and misunderstandings regarding the Biblical model of marriage, where roles are often defined in terms of leadership and submission.2 Influence on Gender Roles in MarriageThe feminist movement has played a significant role in reshaping gender roles within marriage. The Biblical perspective of husbands as "heads" of the household and wives as submissive partners is often challenged, leading to:A) Redefinition of Leadership: Some contemporary Christians interpret leadership as a shared responsibility rather than a unilateral role. This has diluted the traditional concept of the husband's authority and leadership.B) Shift in Responsibilities: With both spouses often working, responsibilities can become more fluid and less traditionally defined, leading to a negotiation of duties that may not align with Biblical teachings.3 Misunderstanding of Scriptural TermsKey terms such as "obey," "submit," "honor," and "lead" carry profound meanings within the Biblical context. However, modern interpretations often lead to misconceptions:Obey and Submit: These terms can be perceived as oppressive. Biblical submission, however, is described as a mutual act of love and respect, where both partners submit to one another (Ephesians 5:21).Honor and Lead: The call to honor and lead may be misconstrued as dictatorial authority rather than a servant leadership style that reflects Christ's love for the church (Ephesians 5:25).4 Power Dynamics in the HomeThe push for gender equality has led to a re-evaluation of power dynamics in marriage:Men Failing to Lead: Some men may struggle with the concept of leadership. This can lead to a sense of inadequacy or confusion regarding their role.Wives Struggling to Submit: Women may find it challenging to allow their husbands to lead, especially if they have developed a strong independent identity or have experienced previous relationships where leadership was abused.5 Challenges in Letting Go and TrustingBoth partners face distinct challenges in navigating these dynamics:Trust Issues: For many women, trusting a husband to lead can be daunting. The fear of relational vulnerability complicates this trust.Fear of Ineffectiveness: Men may fear that stepping into a leadership role could lead to criticism or rejection of their decisions, which can perpetuate a cycle of indecision or avoidance of leadership.Cultural Pressures: Societal narratives often emphasize independence and self-sufficiency, which can create barriers to embracing a Biblical model of marriage that values interdependence and cooperation.6 Education and Church InfluenceThe diminished presence of the church in public schools and its influence on educational curriculums can have far-reaching implications:Curriculum Changes: As church teachings have receded from public education, secular narratives often dominate discussions on gender and sexuality. Curricula that emphasize gender fluidity, personal choice, and diverse family structures can contrast sharply with traditional Biblical teachings.Altered Narratives: This change can distort views of Biblical truths, especially among younger generations who may be less exposed to church teachings. As a result, children may grow up with values that prioritize individualism and personal autonomy over the communal and sacrificial aspects of Christian marriage. The Questions1 What advice would you give to couples currently struggling to establish a more Biblical Marriage? For those who recognize the negative impacts of modern influences on marriage and family dynamics, redirecting leadership roles can be a significant struggle. While the concept of gender equality holds value, it often fails to embrace or support the distinct and complementary roles that individuals play within marriage. 2 I can't help but wonder whether the rising divorce statistics are influenced by our collective rejection of these traditional roles and the subconscious effects of contemporary culture on our marital expectations. What are your thoughts? I believe as children of God, we are equals; however, it is essential to recognize that the genders are not designed to be identical. The differences in our design carry a profound significance that highlights how we complement one another, allowing us to unite as one and support each other in our respective roles. Embracing these unique attributes can enhance our relationships, leading to a more fulfilling and harmonious partnership.Resources for this episode: - The Making of Biblical Womanhood by Beth Allison Barr - The Marriage You Always Wanted by Sheila Wray Gregorie and Dr. Keith Gregorie -Nobody's Mother by Sandra Glahn Do you have a question you've been wanting answered? A crucial aspect of Christian discipleship is learning how to follow Christ faithfully regardless of the culture we find ourselves in. At times in history, Christians have found themselves both on the outside and on the inside of cultural power. But today, things are a little more complicated. And that leads us to ask the question, Is our culture more progressive or more conservative? How you answer this question often has everything to do with your general outlook, but it's an important question to consider if we're going to really understand and navigate the complexities of life in the modern West as those whose desire is, above all, to be faithful to the Lord Jesus. In this episode, Dr. Lisa Rasking, D.C., Vaidya Mishra's accomplished student and research collaborator, explains the dangers of consuming vegetables from the nightshade family. These veggies, which include eggplants, bell peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes, contain several neurotoxic substances, like nicotine and particularly solanine. These toxic chemicals are produced by the plants to protect themselves from insects and are in reality nature's-made pesticides, which modern laboratories utilize to manufacture rat poison and herbicides. Solanine, which accumulates in the body's involuntary muscle tissues and the intestines' lining, is directly related to osteoporosis and general calcium and vitamin D deficiency. It “deviates” the calcium causing it to accumulate and build up in the wrong tissues instead of being put to work on building healthy bones. It also interferes with neuronal synapses and affects our joints among several other disruptions. Modern Western research is corroborating today what the ancient sutras of ayurveda knew since time immemorial and Vaidya Mishra learned from his father and ancestors in his Shaka Vanshyia lineage of healers. This lecture was recorded from a live event with in-person and remote participants (via phone connection) and is included on the DVD set “Principles of SVA Food” available for purchase at Chandika.com.

In recent years, the number of young people identifying as trans has doubled. However, a common misinterpretation arises, suggesting that this surge implies a new phenomenon of being trans or gender non-conforming. Modern Western culture has strongly insisted on the conventional belief that the gender binary is natural, fostering the false assumption that human culture and history have always revolved around this binary. In reality, humans worldwide have expressed gender concepts outside that binary as far back as the 8th century BC. Hey Stefan, possible case of family annihilator in UK. Emma Pattison (she was headteacher of Epsom college) and her daughter were shot dead by the husband who then killed himself. Why are some men family annihilators? What drives them to do this?Hey Stefan, how can I identify my own manipulations with my child or to say it in another way how do I know if I am inadvertently manipulating my toddler? Also what are your thoughts on couple counseling?Thank you ~why don't people blame the parents of early adult suicide victims for being terrible parents?I can think of some surface reasons like "don't want to get busted for being a bad parent" but is there something deeper?Would you be interested in polling your listeners according to sex, age, continent of origin, relationship status etc.Someone mentioned in a thread here on Locals that the majority of your listeners are young, single men. Is that really so?How can I better negotiate with my 4 year old son who is reflexively disagreeable. My wife and I are committed to peaceful parenting, but his lack of cooperation are disruptive to daily activities, family outings, etc. He gets plenty of one on one parent and group family time to explore relationships and dynamics. Thanks!Could you explain the causes of the Industrial Revolution? I've heard you make the case that morality drove innovation, specifically the ending of slavery in 1833, which allowed for new cotton-based agricultural labour saving devices in the late 19th and early 20th century. How would you explain the creation of other labour-saving devices prior to 1833? What were the moral conditions that allowed textile based machinery, the steam engine and machine tools to be created whilst slavery was still widely practiced in the Industrial Revolution? If you could timeline starting from the Roman Empire until 1833 the increasing moral standards and the subsequent technological advancements? Is it really cause and effect? Or can an argument be made that morality and innovation are independent from each other? And can you reiterate why the process isn't reversed (labour saving devices lead to increased moral standards).Thank you Stef! Why might a father and/or mother continue to feign amnesia of their abusive behavior rather than apologize to their children, knowing their children no longer accept these lies? My oldest brother has drifted away, 2nd has DFOO'd while leaving an open door should they choose to apologize, and I am currently apartment hunting in preparation of DFOO'ing. What do they have to gain that is worth losing all their sons and grandchildren?Modern Western women have an almost superhuman ability to sense which men are and are not having regular sex, and then they typically are only receptive to the advances of the more promiscuous and thus confident men. Many men report “dry spells” due to this feedback loop, and it even affects well-meaning men seeking a partner for a long term relationship. How can an otherwise attractive man break out of this vicious cycle?Would you agree that if young people share their privacy so eagerly in social media, they will also not mind giving up their privacy to the state and therefore increase its power? You have suggested that in a stateless society, ostracism would play a role in preventing or punishing crimes. The collectivist Left has been using this tactic for years, and it's a method that is tearing down society. Obviously the collectivist Left is completely irrational, and the people ostracizing like they do suffer from public schooling and other mind destroying institutions, but does this make you concerned about the role of ostracism in a stateless society? (While writing this message, it occurred to me that maybe this is also proof of it's effectiveness, when applied in a RATIONAL society

The Western! An film genre that easily evokes images of gunslingers, lawmen, and the Old West. Names like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne might immediately come to mind and their classic westerns of the 60s and 70s. Tonight however we want to discuss the more modern ventures in the western genre. Films that span the last 30 years or so without examining the films of the 60s, 70s, and 80s these newer westerns have become modern classics. Films like Tombstone, the 2007 3:10 to Yuma, Young Guns 1 & 2. While not traditional there's also Hell or High Water - is it a western? It has many of the hallmarks despite its contemporary setting. Then there is the Academy Award winning Unforgiven an essential farewell to the genre for Eastwood. As Tarantino fans there's Django Unchained and the Hateful Eight, literally too many to discuss but we plan to tackle as many as we can! What are your favorites?
