WA sheep farmers do things "bloody well" if you ask Fraser Stewart, which is why he wrestled the 2025 Rabo WA Sheep & Wool tour to the west side of the country. Fraser was proud to see curiosity and ideas bounce between the 21 big industry players visiting from the Eastern States and New Zealand to WA's Great Southern region last month. WA is a key restocking market nationally, but Fraser wanted to show the impressive adaptations farmers are making to the phase out of the live export trade, and some of the on-farm strategies to maximise production systems in a drying climate. Gene Cassidy understands that the Big E generates traffic jams outside the fairgrounds — and sometimes traffic jams inside the grounds as patrons flock to new attractions and food vendors. What he can't understand is why some can't look past those ‘good problems to have' and see the annual fair as a true economic engine for the region, bringing money into the 413 and helping several sectors of the economy directly. This is one of many points he made in a wide-ranging discussion with BusinessWest contributing writer George O'Brien on the next episode of BusinessTalk. He also talks about the weather (as it pertains to the fair's bottom line), the prospects for the 2025 edition, and what's new — and old — for the show this year. It's must listening, so tune into BusinessTalk, a podcast presented by BusinessWest.

What can America's first prison teach us about criminal justice today? Journey inside the imposing stone walls of Eastern State Penitentiary with President and CEO Kerry Sautner as she unveils the fascinating and troubling history of this revolutionary institution.Built in 1829 as a castle-like structure visible from all directions, Eastern State wasn't just designed to punish – it represented a radical new approach to justice. Founded on Quaker beliefs that every person possesses an "inner light," the penitentiary introduced long-term solitary confinement as a path to reflection and redemption. The tragic irony? This well-intentioned experiment quickly revealed the devastating psychological effects of isolation, with mental health deterioration evident within just 15 days. Yet solitary confinement persists in most American prisons today. The statistics Sautner shares are staggering: one in four American children has an incarcerated parent, and 77% of formerly incarcerated individuals return to prison within five years. "Imagine if that was a score on a test," she challenges. "You wouldn't pass at 33%." Through innovative programs like reentry simulations and educational initiatives for teachers nationwide, Eastern State now works to transform understanding of these systemic issues. This conversation transcends typical prison discourse by examining fundamental questions at the heart of our democracy: What is the purpose of incarceration? What outcomes should we expect? And critically – is this how we as a society want to address crime and justice? Whether you're a teacher looking for classroom resources, a concerned citizen, or simply curious about this architectural marvel, you'll find Eastern State's approach both enlightening and deeply thought-provoking. In this chilling episode of the 222 Paranormal Podcast, we take you on a spine-tingling tour of one of America's most haunted states—Pennsylvania. With its rich history, colonial roots, and centuries of folklore, it's no wonder that the Keystone State is teeming with tales of the supernatural. Buckle up as we explore three of the most notorious paranormal hotspots: Eastern State Penitentiary, the abandoned town of Centralia, and the eerie Curse of Centralia First, we dive into the cold, crumbling walls of Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, this Gothic-style fortress was built in 1829 and became a model for prison reform. However, its innovative solitary confinement system led to decades of extreme isolation, mental deterioration, and documented reports of abuse. Today, Eastern State is a hotspot for ghost hunters and thrill seekers. Visitors and investigators frequently report shadowy figures, disembodied voices, cell doors slamming shut on their own, and even chilling apparitions. Could the tortured souls of former inmates still walk its haunted halls? Next, we head north to the ghost town of Centralia—a place that quite literally went to hell. Once a bustling coal town, Centralia's fate changed forever in 1962 when an underground mine fire ignited and spread beneath the town, creating a toxic, fiery inferno that still burns today. Smoke billows from cracks in the earth, streets buckle from the heat, and eerie silence blankets the abandoned remains. But beyond the environmental disaster lies a dark legend: the Curse of Centralia. Some believe the fire awakened something ancient—an evil presence long buried beneath the town. Sightings of ghostly figures, phantom voices, and reports of a deep, unsettling dread have given rise to the idea that Centralia isn't just a tragedy—it's cursed. Is it the land itself? A restless energy tied to coal mining or something much older? We discuss theories from Native American lore to modern-day occult connections that suggest Centralia's story is more than just environmental—it might be spiritual. And we'll share real witness accounts from brave souls who've visited Centralia's scorched streets and left forever changed. From prison phantoms to cursed towns swallowed by fire, this episode is packed with the kind of eerie energy that makes your spine tingle. It was America's first mental asylum – and the horrors in the minds of its patients couldn't compare to the horrors of the asylum itself. (The Hauntings of Eastern State Mental Asylum) *** Weirdo family member Krysta Lee shares a personal encounter with a spirit in her bathroom. (Cool Hand On My Shoulder) *** Belief in witches, hexes, and powerful spirits was prevalent in the 19th century, and into the 20th century. In fact, in rural areas of Pennsylvania, it might still be practiced today. So it's the perfect setting for a murder involving curses, and a local witch. (The Witch of Ringtown) *** Parking tickets, floppy disks and escaped victims – these helped catch a handful of serial murderers who would likely have never been caught otherwise. (When Killers Capture Themselves) *** It's been called a freak of nature, as weird as it is beautiful. Seen here are terrifying flying entities, giant skeletons, and even the legendary Bigfoot. I hope to still be running races when I am in my 60s or 70s, just like today's guest: Ruth Kohstall. She got into running in her 40s when she was playing soccer and decided to challenge herself on the trails by running longer and longer distances. In the last episode we talked with the race director about how Eastern States was cancelled due to flooding and a state of emergency. Ruth was signed up for Eastern States, but then tried to run another 100 mile race a couple weeks later, since she had been training. That race ended up with her needing stitches, so at 70 years old she decided a couple weeks later to go run a "fatass" (unsanctioned & self-supported) race. The running community came out to cheer her on and run some of the night loops with her as she set out to run 100 miles.
In state elections in Thuringia and Saxony, the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) surged to first and second place, respectively, with over 30 percent of the vote in both states. …
Imagine that you are at the starting line of the hundred miler that you've been training for the last several years... And you hear the announcement that the race is canceled due to extreme weather conditions! What would you do? Would you go out and do your own hundo? Well, that's exactly what happened to Jennifer Rankin this past August when Eastern States 100 was canceled by the state of PA due to dangerous flooding! Jennifer and her crew decided to head back home to the Hudson Highlands of New York and complete the hundred miler there! Tune-in to this super squatchtastic episode to hear all about Jennifer's epic runventure!
No one wants a race to be cancelled, but sometimes mother nature, in this instance named Tropical Storm Debby, has other thoughts. Ben Mazer is the race director with dozens of races under his belt. This year he had his work cut out for him the days leading up to Eastern States 100 mile race. Heavy rain from the storm forced them to make course alterations several times leading up to race day, but ultimately the Governor of Pennsylvania made a declaration of emergency and the race had to be cancelled. The race organizers still tried to make the best of the situation and Ben goes into that. If you are interested in running Eastern States 100 next year, check out their website for more details.
Debbie is a huge DOWNER!!! Eastern States got canceled for good reason, The weekend was still spent with trail family. Tune in to hear all the juicy bits!
Eastern States is less than 2 weeks away! Grayce and Eric are so freaking excited that they have TWO registered runners on to talk about their year, their training going into the race and how they plan to execute it! Anthony made it to mile 62 last year before DNFing, and this will be the first 100 miler for Kara. Both athletes have had phenomenal races at Hyner 50k and Worlds End 100k as they chase their quest for the PA Triple Crown! Tune in for some good Pine Creek Chit Chat!!!
Prisons had once been thought of as just holding areas to punish people. In the late 1800s, a movement started that aspired to a higher ideal of reform, rather than punishment. Eastern State Penitentiary was built to launch that reformation in the American penal system. The prison's edifice is formidable and resembles a castle. This eventually became the most famous prison in the world. The prison ran for 142 years and today serves as a museum that offers both historical and ghost tours and hunts. Officers, inmates, staff and visitors have all reported haunting activity for decades at the prison. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Eastern State Penitentiary! We'll look at the mysterious, strange, and dangerous Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia.
