Jazz, one of America's great art forms, has a decorated history in Boston. Charlie Parker performed here in the early '50s. Clubs from the Hi-Hat to Savoy Café lined the streets. And Miles Davis resuscitated his career here in 1981, playing a string of sold-out shows. Sue Auclair helped coordinate Davis' return. She described the moment she broke the news to Eric Jackson, who spearheaded decades of radio programming at GBH: "I said, 'You're not gonna believe this but Miles is coming to Boston.' I told him the details, he cut the music midstream — which no one ever does — and he announces this. ... We sold the thing out four nights." But the prevalence of jazz in Boston is not what it once was. From a change in culture to a lack of clubs and gentrification, Auclair and other Under the Radar guests discussed the past, present and future of jazz in Boston. Tessil Collins, host of the Jazz Gallery at GBH, laments today's lack of dedicated jazz venues. "When you look at these places, though, you're talking about playing jazz at a restaurant ... you're having a meal, people are talking, and there's a band over here in the corner doing background music," he said. "It's unfortunate that we have to settle for that." Gentrification and "nightclub apartheid" has impacted the scene as well, says George "Chip" Greenidge Jr., founder and director of the nonprofit Greatest MINDS. "12 years ago [I told a Boston Globe editor], 'Boston has this feeling where it's called nightclub apartheid.' ... You know, people of color are usually relegated on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and Friday, Saturday, Sundays will be given to, pretty much, white people," he said. "... So, we do have to talk about gentrification, we do have to talk about space and place and where people feel comfortable." Greenidge said there used to be more affordable entertainment options. Now, he says, there are few places to just "sit and enjoy yourself." Við þökkum einnig fyrir fjölda áskoranna sem okkur barst þar sem okkur var réttilega bent á að okkar menn hafa nú sjálfir hætt við að hætta. Við setjum allt í nefnd og leggjumst nú undir feld, það er ekkert víst að þetta sé aaaalveg attbú. En hvað sem gerist er vikulegum þáttum lokið að sinni, the tour is over. Hosted on Acast. This episode features the talents of some great MWSD callers singing "cowboy songs". No dancing this episode, instead callers Ernie Kinney, Bronc Wise, and Tom Perry - the Hi Hat Pioneers - are featured. These callers performed live at many square dance specials and festivals. This was their second album released in 1985. Originally thought to be lost, a cassette was recently discovered and presented here. Please take a moment to make a gift to offset our production costs.

In the debut of Backstage at the hi hat, co-hosts Tom and Theron discuss the origins of the podcast name, talk about the historic jazz entertainment district in downtown Akron, and reflect on the life of legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea. In Akron, jazz legends like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles would perform at the Palace Theater before heading to Howard Street, where fans waited at clubs such as the hi hat, the Green Turtle, and the Cosmopolitan. Backstage at the hi hat is a nod to that history and will look to capture the type of conversations that occurred at those historic clubs, The podcast will feature interviews with musicians, book authors and other newsmakers as we explore the rich and diverse genre of jazz music. Learn more about Theron Brown at his website. Learn more about the Akron Symphony at its website. Learn more about the life and music of Chick Corea at his website.
The origins of the Hi-Hat pedal have long been debated, and Rob Cook introduces us to a new theory that a gentleman named Skip Retherford was the inventor in the 1922. This pre-dates Papa Jo Jones, who is widely thought to be the earliest user of the Hi-Hat. Rob shares this great story with us and how he got involved after Zildjian decided he was the best man to handle this information. Find out what happened to Skip's invention and learn everything else you could want to know about the Hi-Hat in this episode! Rob Cook is the founder of the Chicago Drum Show and runs www.rebeats.com . He is a wealth of information and publishes a number of great books that can be found on the Rebeats website. You can also hear him on previous episode of Drum history about the history of Leedy Drums.
