What's one challenge in your life right now that could spark a business idea if you acted on it? On Think Business, I spoke with Nicole Daher, CEO and founder of Success on the Spectrum (SOS)—the first autism treatment franchise in the U.S. Nicole's journey began with a deeply personal challenge. When her daughter was diagnosed with autism, she searched Houston for treatment options. What she found were long waitlists and not enough clinics to meet the demand. Instead of waiting, Nicole acted. In 2015, she opened her first clinic. Today, SOS has grown into 76 franchises, changing lives across the country. Here are a few takeaways from Nicole's journey:

Rory Linkletter (2:06 marathoner) discusses fueling specifics, everything he has learned throughout his career, and the importance of staying flexible based on conditions. We also covered speed development, including workouts at 2:15/km pace and faster, whether the Boston Marathon can be quicker than Valencia when the wind is favourable, the relationship between Conner Mantz and Ed Eyestone, coaching Truett Hanes, and much more. Rory explains why he sprints and strides twice weekly, often using track in-and-outs or hill strides, and why he values maintaining top-end speed. He also describes building confidence to go out fast using fitness data, including sub-60 half marathons, and gives his views on Boston's comparability to flat courses and Ryan Hall's windy 2:04. Victoria Lai has lived several careers in one lifetime: presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, entrepreneur, and now business advisor and nonprofit COO. But her biggest pivot came when she nurtured her passion for making ice cream on nights and weekends while working a serious government job. In this extra sweet episode, Victoria walks us through how a $25 Craigslist ice cream maker and a promise to herself led to Ice Cream Jubilee, the award-winning DC-area business celebrated by Food & Wine, the Washington Post, and Thrillist, and what it felt like to eventually sell the business she'd spent nearly a decade building. She also opens up about her family's Chinese immigrant history and how it shaped both her flavors and her sense of purpose, and why she considers her latest pivot back to mission-driven work the most fitting chapter yet. This week on Current Affairs, two cases of love gone fatally wrong. In Houston, restaurateur Matthew Mitchell shot and killed his wife Thy and their two young children before turning the gun on himself, leaving the city's food scene and a tight-knit family in shock. In Miami, 18-year-old Jahara Malik was sentenced to 17 years for fatally stabbing her boyfriend Yahkeim "Keimo" Lollar in an apartment garage — a killing she claimed was an accident, and a sentence his family says still isn't enough.Current Affairs is Love Murder's shorter show about the cases of love gone fatally wrong that are in the news right now.Sources:https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/houston-restauranteur-kills-wife-2-kids-turning-gun-rcna343757https://abc13.com/post/river-oaks-houston-shooting-travelers-table-owners-identified-murder-suicide-scene-kingston-street-spokesperson-confirms/19044250/https://www.fox26houston.com/news/travelers-table-owners-river-oaks-houston-home-scene-suspected-murder-suicidehttps://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/jahara-malik-yahkeim-lollar-stabbing-death-south-florida-jail-sentence/https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/sentencing-underway-for-teen-who-fatally-stabbed-boyfriend-during-argument-in-miami/3805242/https://wsvn.com/news/local/miami-dade/18-year-old-woman-sentenced-to-17-years-in-prison-in-boyfriends-fatal-2024-stabbing-in-miami-parking-garage/Find LOVE MURDER online:Website: lovemurder.loveInstagram: @lovemurderpodTwitter: @lovemurderpodFacebook: LoveMrdrPodTikTok: @LoveMurderPodPatreon: /LoveMurderPodCredits: Love Murder is hosted by Jessie Pray and Andie Cassette, researched by Sarah Lynn Robinson and researched and written by Jessie Pray, produced by Nathaniel Whittemore and edited by Kyle Barbour-HoffmanSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Munaf Manji and Dave Essler talk betting for Friday. Munaf Manji and Uncle Diamond Dave Essler are back on the Straight Outta Vegas AM feed for the May 1 edition of Cash That Ticket, and the slate is as loaded as any Friday of the playoffs. The show opens with a full Thursday night recap after Minnesota eliminated Denver in six games, with Jaden McDaniels going for a career-high 32 points and 10 rebounds while Terrence Shannon Jr. added 24 in a starting role forced by a three-guard injury pile that left the Timberwolves shorthanded going into the clincher. Jamal Murray shot 4-of-17, finished with 12 points and four assists, and the Nuggets are done. Minnesota advances to face San Antonio on Monday. The Knicks destroyed Atlanta 140-89 on a night where the Hawks never threatened, and Philadelphia beat Boston to force a Saturday Game 7 in the Eastern Conference. Then the guys get into tonight's three elimination games and that is where the real work begins. In Orlando, the Magic are catching four points at home against Detroit in a game where Franz Wagner is out and the Pistons are laying points for the first time in the series on the road in a must-win spot for the home team. Dave likes the Magic plus four and the under at 210. Munaf builds a detailed case for Desmond Bane over 2.5 three-pointers made at plus-117 on DraftKings, citing three consecutive games with three-plus threes, five-plus threes in both Orlando home games, 8.83 attempts per game from deep, and 35-plus minutes of run with Wagner sidelined. In Toronto, Cleveland has never won on the road in this series and the Raptors outplayed the Cavaliers in every stat but three-point shooting in Game 5, losing by five while outrebounding Cleveland by 13 and posting 32 assists to Cleveland's 20. Brandon Ingram moves to doubtful mid-show and the line shifts a full point across every book, but both Dave and Munaf had already made their call on Toronto at plus points before the downgrade was official. In Houston, the Rockets try to force a Game 7 without Kevin Durant, who is out again with a bone bruise in his ankle. LeBron James is 41 and playing six games in thirteen days on the road. Austin Reeves is back but has become a defensive liability. Reed Sheppard had his coming-out moments in Game 5. Amen Thompson is playing like a seasoned postseason veteran. Dave and Munaf both land on Houston to cover and the under at 205.5, noting that three of five games in this series have finished at 205 or below. The MLB card gets a full breakdown too, with Dave delivering his best bet of the year candidate in the Red Sox team total over 4.5 runs against Mike Burrows and the porous Astros bullpen at Fenway Park. Munaf adds the Royals at Mariners under with Cole Ragans and Bryan Woo on the mound as his cleaner baseball play. There is also discussion of the Dodgers at St. Louis under, the Twins team total against Patrick Corbin, the White Sox run line against San Diego, and whether Shane McClanahan at minus-150 is worth it against San Francisco. All this plus the Pregame.com promo code HIT20 for twenty dollars off a thirty-day MLB all-access package at one hundred and nineteen dollars, and a Monday preview that will bring the official April best bets recap, second-round series previews, and the full Timberwolves versus Spurs Game 1 breakdown. Zacchaeus doesn't just “meet Jesus” he scrambles for Him. We start in Luke 19 with a man so determined to see Christ that he runs ahead, climbs a tree, and ends up hosting the Savior at home. That story presses a simple question on us: if Jesus drew near to our town, would we be eager and desperate to see Him, or would we hang back and complain with the crowd? From there, we get practical about Christian priorities through Genesis 2. Marriage is not an accessory relationship, and it can't survive on leftovers after screens, sports, friends, hobbies, and constant noise take the best of us. We talk about what it looks like to treat “one flesh” as a real covenant, not a convenience, and why neglect is often the quiet root of a broken home.We also walk through the parable of the minas and connect it with Proverbs 13:11 on slow, honest growth versus get-rich-quick loss. Stewardship is accountability: God gives, we invest, and we'll answer for what we did with what we were trusted with. The episode then widens into Psalm 87 and a closing challenge that blends faith, public life, and American history, including Patrick Henry's insistence on speaking plainly when the stakes are high.If you got something from this, subscribe, share the show with someone you care about, and leave a review so more people can find it.#ChristianNation#ChristianRepublic #BacktoGod Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribeCountryside Book Serieshttps://www.amazon.com/Countryside-Book-J-T-Cope-IV-ebook/dp/B00MPIXOB2

What's really happening in Texas waterways — and why is so much trash ending up there? In this episode of Texas Talks, host Brad Swail sits down with Robby Robinson, Field Operations Manager at the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, and Mike Garver, Chairman of Texans for Clean Water and a founding member of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, for a firsthand look at the growing challenge of waterway pollution in Texas. Recorded in Houston after a live tour of Buffalo Bayou, the conversation explores what the team saw on the water — and why the problem is far bigger than most people realize. A major focus of the discussion is how trash actually reaches waterways. Contrary to common assumptions, most of it isn't dumped directly into rivers or bayous — it comes from everyday litter on streets, which is carried through storm drains and funnels into the broader water system. The discussion covers: • How Buffalo Bayou has transformed since the 1980s • Where waterway trash actually comes from • How Houston's storm drain system feeds directly into the bayou • The scale of the problem — draining over 200 square miles • The “bayou vac” system and how cleanup operations work • Why cleanup efforts only capture a fraction of total waste • How plastic pollution travels from cities to the ocean • The rise of microplastics and long-term environmental impact • Why Texas imports recyclable materials from other states • The economic demand for recycled plastic, glass, and aluminum • The limits of cleanup vs preventing pollution at the source • The case for a bottle deposit refund system in Texas • How other states (like Oregon) achieve high recycling rates • Policy barriers and the need for state-level legislation • Landfill capacity concerns and long-term waste challenges Robinson and Garver emphasize a key point: cleanup alone is not the solution. Even with daily operations, only a small percentage of total waste is removed — meaning most of it ultimately flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Instead, they argue the answer lies upstream — preventing waste from entering the system in the first place, particularly through proven policies like deposit-refund recycling programs. The episode highlights a broader takeaway: keeping Texas waterways clean isn't just an environmental issue — it's a matter of infrastructure, public behavior, and policy alignment. 00:00 — Intro + Buffalo Bayou tour recap 00:35 — What is the Buffalo Bayou Partnership? 01:37 — What the bayou looked like in the 1980s 02:58 — From “no man's land” to public space 03:44 — Where all the trash comes from 05:04 — Storm drains and urban runoff explained 05:30 — Scale of the problem: 200+ square miles 06:08 — Inside the “bayou vac” cleanup system 07:03 — How much trash gets collected weekly 08:10 — What happens when trash reaches the ocean 08:50 — Microplastics and environmental impact 10:23 — Why some trash sinks and some floats 11:17 — How unique is Houston's cleanup operation? 11:31 — Funding: public, private, and local support 12:38 — Cleanup efforts across Texas waterways 13:34 — Trash flowing downstream from across the state 14:17 — Policy discussion: bottle deposit systems 15:26 — Why Texas imports recyclable materials 16:29 — How deposit systems work in other states 17:39 — “Legislating ourselves out of a job” 18:11 — Why prevention beats cleanup 19:01 — Growth, consumption, and rising waste 20:06 — Industry pushback and policy challenges 21:18 — Economic and landfill impacts 22:53 — Landfill capacity concerns in Texas 23:39 — Why the problem is getting worse 32:12 — Final thoughts + call to action 34:02 — Where to learn more (Texans for Clean Water) Watch Full-Length Interviews: https://www.youtube.com/@TexasTalks

On this episode of Rules of the Game, we dive into some of the most common – and pressing – questions we hear on our free nonprofit advocacy technical assistance hotline. From whether foundation funding can support voter registration efforts, to what nonprofits should know when attending rallies and advocating around local law enforcement cooperation with ICE, we break down the rules and offer practical guidance you can use to enhance your organization's advocacy and community participation in elections and other public policy activities. We'll discuss real world scenarios, and a few surprises drawn straight from questions advocate like you are asking every day. Attorneys for this episode Tim Mooney Natalie Roetzel Ossenfort Quyen Tu Shownotes Question 1: How can 501(c)(3) organizations participate in voter registration activities, and where can we find funding to support this work? Voter registration is explicitly allowed (and encouraged): 501(c)(3) public charities can conduct voter registration drives if they are nonpartisan: no support for or opposition to any candidate or political party. This includes helping people register, providing forms, and sharing neutral information about how and where to vote. Stay strictly nonpartisan in execution: Activities must be offered equally to all eligible voters, without targeting based on partisan affiliation or coordinating with campaigns. Messaging should focus on civic participation, not persuading people how to vote. Integrate into existing programs: Nonprofits can weave voter registration into their regular services, including clinics, food distribution, schools, housing programs, etc. so long as participation is voluntary and not tied to receiving services. Train staff and document compliance: Provide clear guidance to staff and volunteers on what they can and cannot say/do, and keep materials and scripts neutral. Written policies help demonstrate compliance if questions arise. Remember to follow state law too! Use trusted resources and tools: State election offices, nonpartisan groups (like BA and League of Women Voters affiliates), and national civic engagement organizations offer compliant toolkits, forms, and training materials. Funding realities (and strategy) Private foundations can fund nonpartisan voter registration, but they face extra rules for "voter registration drives" under IRS definitions (multi cycle, multi state, etc.). Few private foundations fund at this level, so pursuing funding for voter registration drives may not work out. Community foundations (and other public charities), and individual donors are typically more flexible and practical funding sources for this work. Corporate philanthropy may also support civic engagement framed around community participation, equity, or access. Check the grant for scope and ensure funds are used strictly for nonpartisan activities. Question 2: Our organization is considering having a presence at an upcoming rally. What should we know about this type of activity? Can we participate as an organization or as individual advocates working outside of the purview of our nonprofit? Understand that there are many interests and types of orgs participating Understand the goals of the rally Like Tim said, Educate your volunteers/staff who will be attending on what your (c)(3) needs to do Focus on policies No candidates facts and circumstances If (c)(3) staff are asked who they support in upcoming elections, they should avoid answering Organization v. individual capacity Reminder: state and local rules if this is a protest Question 3: There's a proposal on the table in our community that would require local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE. Can we advocate against this? If so, what do nonprofit advocacy rules have to say about it? Several states and local municipalities are considering proposals that would require law enforcement cooperation with ICE and others are considering policies that could significantly impact ICE operations. For example: In Tennessee, a new immigration-related bill (HB 2219) would require the Sherrif of each county to cooperate with ICE via a 287(g) agreement In Houston, Texas, the City Council is considering a proposal that would give Houston police officers the discretion to call ICE in relation to certain immigration warrants. In Salt Lake City, Utah, the City Council recently passed a new ordinance that limits nonresidential water consumption, complicating the opening of a new ICE detention facility in the city. If your organization wants to chime-in, what rules should it be considering? If you are attempting to influence a bill or proposed ordinance in your city, that activity could qualify as lobbying since it happens in a legislative context. The tax code permits some public charity lobbying, but it limits how much lobbying they can do. Whether your action counts as lobbying depends on which of two tests you use to measure your lobbying limits: insubstantial part test or 501(h) election since the definitions of lobbying differ under each test. Legislative activities of these types could also trigger state and local-level lobbyist registration and reporting. Make sure that all lobbying conducted by your public charity is properly tracked and reported, that you are staying within your lobbying limits, and that you are using funds that permit this type of activity. If you are simply trying to influence an executive branch (e.g. local law enforcement) policy and not legislation, you will likely not need to count this activity against your lobbying limits, but it could still trigger registration and reporting. In January 1989, 43-year-old Thomas Charles Hammerton was found stabbed to death on a quiet street in Houston's Hyde Park neighborhood, near the city's Montrose district. Hammerton had moved to Houston from Youngstown, Ohio, seeking a place where he could live more openly and freely in one of the city's most vibrant LGBTQ+ communities. But his murder came at a time when organized skinhead groups and hate-motivated violence were spreading across the United States. In Houston, reports of harassment and attacks by neo-Nazi skinheads had already begun to surface in Montrose and surrounding neighborhoods.Investigators eventually identified a self-described skinhead as a prime suspect during a narcotics raid that uncovered drugs and multiple knives believed to be consistent with the weapon used in the killing. Despite the discovery, no homicide charges were ever filed.Nearly four decades later, the murder of Thomas Charles Hammerton remains unsolved. If you have any information about the murder of Thomas Charles Hammerton, please call Texas Crime Stoppers at (800) 252-8477.You can support gone cold and listen to the show ad-free at https://patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFor Gone Cold merch, visit https://gonecold.dashery.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.
