We've been huge fans of Jason Enns here at DIG for almost as long as we've been around (anyone remember 'that' cover?) so we were stoked that Snakebite's Shad Johnson finally caught up with him for a long-overdue podcast. Enjoy! "After a few good Slams on Jason's mini-ramp, we headed inside and talked growing up in one of the coldest places I have seen produce rad riders, early 90's Canadian scene, and lots, lots more..." - Shad Johnson This is a www.digbmx.com release in collaboration with www.snakebitebmx.com/ Find all our podcasts in one place on the DIG BMX APP. "I was beyond excited to sit down with 80's Vert legend, the one and only Josh White. Josh was the first big freestyle rider to make it from my area of the country (the Pacific North West) so you know I was full of questions for him! We talk about Josh's quick rise in BMX, his touring days with GT, what made him step away from BMX and most importantly what has gotten him back on his bike riding again!" - Shad Johnson This is a www.digbmx.com release in collaboration with www.snakebitebmx.com/ Find all our podcasts in one place on the DIG BMX APP. "Early in Summer 2019 I sat down with Cameron Birdwell over at Oscar Gonzales' house and we talked about how he grew up in the Norcal scene, riding with Ryan Nyquist & Chad Kagy when they all were young, his years riding for 2-Hip, his crazy tour life that covers 2-hip tours & Warped tour, & his battles with addiction and how brought himself back. I was so excited to hear what Cam had to say and i hope you all enjoy it!" - Shad Johnson This is a www.digbmx.com release in collaboration with www.snakebitebmx.com/ Find all our podcasts in one place on the DIG BMX APP. I sat down at home in Portland with Bruce Crisman, a genuine street pioneer who not only heavily pushed the progression of freecoaster riding, but was also an XGames champion. Bruce and I have been close friends for over 20 years so I was more than excited for us to have this conversation and help share his story with you. - Shad Johnson This is a www.digbmx.com release in collaboration with www.snakebitebmx.com/ Find all our podcasts in one place on the DIG BMX APP. Our first interview with this guy just over a year ago was an education, to say the least, so for the latest episode of our DIG x Snakebite podcast series Shad Johnson sat back down with Dom Phipps to talk with him about the planned 2nd edition of his successful 'Wall To Wall Freestyle' book project. This is shaping up to be another comprehensive project about the history of our much loved 'sport' and includes new content on the Dirt Bros, The Curb Dogs, a King of Dirt history, the Odyssey, Haro and Airwalk stories, the origins of street riding and much much more. For our latest DIG BMX X SNAKEBITE podcast I was super excited to sit down and talk BMX with long-time friend and legit legend, Mike 'Rooftop' Escamilla! We cover his early days, filming for his break out part in Dirty Deeds, the unspoken ’rules’ that crept into late 90's riding, what it takes to film a video part, and so much more! If you know Mike you know he speaks openly and this episode pulls no punches. I think you’ll like this one! - Shad Johnson A www.digbmx.com release in collaboration with www.snakebitebmx.com/ Subscribe to DIG BMX Podcasts on itunes itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/dig-b…d1024768508?mt=2 Find all our podcasts in one place on the DIG BMX APP. "It was so much fun doing this podcast with the legendary Simon Tabron. I was excited to talk with him about the amazing vert scene the UK had in the 80's and 90's, as well as vert rivalries, 900's, what type of riding he likes to see and so much more. We even went off the rails and talked about how a bike really feels, breaking down how Simon looks at his bike now compared to 20 or 30 years ago. I was really excited to sit down with the legendary Eben Krackau after us going back and forth on social media and being complete nerds about bashguard bikes, old videos and endless random BMX trivia. Eben has went from being a young 80's prodigy on Haro to being on one of the most core companies of the early 90's with Homeless. Despite a very early setback, Eben always had the knack and the skill to ride everything, and always put his own twist on it. - Shad Johnson A www.digbmx.com release in collaboration with www.snakebitebmx.com/ Subscribe to DIG BMX Podcasts on itunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/dig-bmx-podcast-channel/id1024768508?mt=2 Find all our podcasts in one place on the DIG BMX APP. In this older episode Shad caught up with Trevor Meyer while he was on tour, and with a little help from Micah Kranz and Chris Morse, talked about painting Prince’s house, life on the road, why he always rides the biggest bikes. And of course, his dominance of flatland contests during the 90’s. So go ahead and hit play! In order to update our DIG X Snakebite podcast series we thought it would make sense to upload Shad Jonhson's first ever podcast which was originally released just prior to the start of our collaboration early in 2015. This one is with the one and only Ron Wilkerson, who is quite possibly the 'punkest' guy in BMX, and someone whose influence runs a lot deeper than you may think. This is someone who continually rebels against the norm, always does things on his terms, and most importantly, sticks to his guns and acts like the true DIY pioneer that he is... not just using DIY culture as a fake marketing tool. Here's what Shad said right after they met for the pod way back when. "Bruce Crisman called me and said Ron Wilkerson was in town and I should come over and do a podcast. That was enough for me! I cruised over and we crammed into a room and just talked. Bruce and I talked to Ron about a bunch of things. Hot topics were why he changed the name Wilkerson Airlines to 2-Hip, how the 2-Hip team got kicked off of the Warped tour, the real origin of the abubaca and numerous stories about the 2-Hip van and Kevin Martin blowing up engines!" - Shad Johnson A www.digbmx.com/ podcast produced in collaboration with: www.snakebitebmx.com/
For the latest episode of our DIG x Snakebite podcast series Shad Johnson sat down with Dom Phipps to talk with him about the epic new book he is working on called 'Wall To Wall Freestyle'. This is shaping up to be possibly the most comprehensive project ever undertaken about the history and influence of BMX freestyle and is much more than just an 'old school' BMX project. Listen in as Dom discusses everything from unsung pioneers to Dennis Enarson, and how he even got the infamous 'Muster Cluster' of Spike Jonze, Andy Jenkins and Mark Lewman back together to talk BMX Find out more about the release and how you can secure your copy of the book by following the links below. Shad Johnson and Rob Dolecki sat down with style G-O-D Chase Hawk on a rainy day last Spring (2016) at his townhouse in Austin for Chase's first podcast. He covers a lot of ground, including his first exposure to BMX at 9th Street, his racing days, witnessing the explosion of the Austin population and riding scene, stealing sandwiches from Wawa during summers staying in Bethlehem, taking everyone's money via Cee-lo on Road Fools, his Born and Raised comps, how Cult grew so fast, the Joe Rich influence, wrapping up the soon-to-be-released etnies video 'Chapters' (Chase's part is going be an epic one), witnessing an intense beat-down in South Africa, and just a ton of good stories! A www.digbmx.com release in collaboration with www.snakebitebmx.com/ Chase Hawk is supported by our Official DIG Partners: Cult | etnies
Welcome to our latest DIG x Snakebite podcast and this time round it's Arron Ross, someone who has undoubtedly made a mark in BMX and as we remarked in our recent DIG 99.5 print interview, is someone who by standard BMX Pro terms is somewhat of an unusual case. "He exploded into BMX some fifteen years ago and took over through his self sustaining fission energy. With radiant bikes that mirrored his personality, and the extrovertness of one thousand trails riders combined, Aaron hit his stride in the rare period where Props, magazines, AND web videos and social media held competitive ground. He became street riding’s closest thing to a celebrity; an enigma in an otherwise closed off micro universe. To say that Aaron "likes to talk" is indeed an understatement." - DIG 99.5 Well it turns out he can keep talking an talking and pretty much every bit of what he has to say it is well worth listening to. Enjoy and our apologies for the random sonic boom noise throughout the conversation. Your guess is as good as ours. Here's what Shad Johnson had to say about their conversation in Austin, Texas earlier this year. "We went about this podcast with Aaron a little differently than usual. We had so many people write in and ask questions that we decided to start with those and see where the conversation lead us after that. We go over his early years riding and his ongoing love for the BMX race track, how he got on FBM and what it was like to make the move to Sunday, his thoughts on filming video parts and why he those loves florescent bikes so much." - Shad Johnson Produced in collaboration with: www.snakebitebmx.com/
Nina Buitrago is perhaps the best known and most respected female BMX rider in 'our' wide world of bike riding. Earlier this year Snakebite's Shad Johnson sat down with her in Austin and talked about pretty much everything, starting with those early days of growing up on Long Island and being mentored up by Manmade's Daren Meenan and street legend Vic Ayala. We follow that with a chat about Nina's midwest days spending time riding the original Chenga and working at Ray's MTB park, and in there somewhere we pretty much talk about everywhere she's lived and all the scenes she's been a part of. We also talk to her about the growth of the girl BMX scene and her endless search for other girl riders in the early days, not to mention travelling, living in NYC during 9/11, getting into fist fights in Paris, and so much more. Nina has not only done a lot for female BMXers but has contributed so much more to BMX in general by keeping the spirit alive of finding new riders and making new friends. Enjoy! Editors note: At one point Nina chats about the first time she heard her now adopted nickname (Nina Burrito) at the Brighton Backyard Jam from who she thought was our legendary DIG photographer Ricky Adam. Turns out it was his video making farting brother, Peter Adam (DIG, Still United etc). The DIG influence runs deep for all the important stuff eh. One day late in 2015, and after BBQing and riding the legendary Dave Volekers' backyard ramp in his hometown of San Diego for about an hour, I sat down with him and pressed record for this latest DIG X Snakebite podcast. We discussed the worlds first ever street contest, his Dyno days, coming out of retirement to ride in the X Games, caring more about true soul riding more than competing, and so much more. Dave's true passion for riding has always seemed shine through since his first legendary video and magazine appearances in the eighties right through to today, and I felt so privileged to share the stories some of those experiences first-hand with Lord Voelker himself! - SJ
We up with the legendary OG UK vert shredder Lee Reynolds and sat outside his shop 'Hunt & Gather' in San Diego to talk all things Old School BMX and beyond. We covered the US So Cal 'British Invasion' of UK BMX riders in the late 80's, his years on Haro, the Enchanted Ramp, working for for Fox in the late 90's and how an injury helped him become a successful DJ. Enjoy and be sure to let us know in the comments who you'd like to see interviewed in the future. Editors note: The UK magazine that Lee and Shad refer to early on in the podcast is BMX ACTION BIKE and we can confirm that the answer to where Ian Morris comes from is WALES. Keith Treanor has been around. From being a team rider on S&M in the early nineties to his involvement with Menstural Cycles (one of the first spin-off brands from a core bike company). From stand out parts in legendary videos like Dirty Deeds and S&M BMX Inferno (a part which he hated). From being a visitor to an early Backyard Jam in the UK (a trip which had a huge impact on him and those he met along the way) to being a regular focus of UK based print mags the time. From eventually moving from Southern California to Florida and working with UGP, and then at a much later stage moving to OKC and working with Hoffman Bikes and then eventually back to So Cal to work with Volume/Demolition and eventually Colony Bikes where he is today. And somewhere in between all of this he's battled with some serious addiction issues. Yep, Keith Treanor has been around and knows more about our world of BMX than most. Late in 2015 we sat down with a full room of friends including ,Vince Kroff, Evan Lane, Paul Covey and more and got Keith to tell some stories after a long weekend of riding. We go in to his early days on S&M, filming with Dave Parrick, being a Sprocket Jockey, his battle with alcohol, and how he found his way back to BMX. This is a great listen. Produced in collaboration with: http://www.snakebitebmx.com/ Thanks to our Official DIG Partners: http://colonybmx.com.au/
You may not be familiar with the name John Buultjens (or even be able to pronounce it - hence his nickname 'Scottish John') but this guy's story is a true BMX fairytale of sorts. Brought up in Scotland UK he seen his way through some very tough times both on and off his bike before moving to Australia in the 90's where he eventually became involved with Colony Bikes, Forgotten and his own brand Pilgrim. Despite continuing to ride non stop since the early 80's it was in Australia that he developed a passion as an Old School BMX collector, going to extreme lengths (often financially) to re-create the bikes of his youth. The obsession lay mostly with Haro Bikes and he built a personal collection and knowledge of their 80's bikes that at the time surpassed anything that the brand themselves even had. John even went to the extreme lengths of having look-a-like sprockets and cranks re-engineered for the bikes in Taiwan. It's safe to say that for the first decade of this new millennium John knew more about Haro than Haro knew about themselves. John was making connections along with way becoming good friends with Bob Haro and getting much closer with the current owners of Haro bikes. Eventually the coolest possible opening came his way and John became the brand manager of Haro BIkes - the company that shaped his youth and the one that he obsessed over in later life We sat down with John at the Haro HQ in California late in 2015 to talk about his his journey to becoming a Haro employee and his renewed vision for the company. We also talk about his violent past growing up in Scotland, riding with so many influential people in the UK during a time when BMX was virtually non-existent and the insane amounts of money vintage collectors will spend on parts. All in all it was an incredible day learning about John and one of BMX's oldest brands. Pete Augustin is one of kind. Inspired in kind by the legendary Dave Vanderspek he was one of the first guys to literally put some 'meat' into the early 'meet the street' contests. Always going against the grain with a gnarly zero bullshit approach Pete has never stopped riding but yet has never really fitted in. Late in 2015 we were over at a BBQ at Dave Voelker's house and luckily enough the legend that is Pete Augustin was there. We were lucky enough to get himto to take a break from seeing friends to talk to about his early days riding in San Diego, his Schwinn and CW years, Mission Trails, The Dirt Bros, bashguards, why having soul is still important in your riding, and interestingly how he sees the 'BMX circus' of the eighties returning to the detriment of how BMX is shaping up today. Pete doesn't hold back when it comes to saying what he thinks. Enjoy the podcast and don't forget to subscribe to this channel on itunes. If you rate and review the series it's greatly appreciated! We sat down with Van Homan while he was visiting Portland late in 2015 and had one hell of an epic discussion. It feels like we covered almost everything and anything ranging from how much of a game changer Standard 3/8's heat treated axle's were when they came out, to the classic Trailblazin' video, filming for both the Little Devil videos, keeping that mindset to keep pushing your riding as you get older, and so so many other things. Van just started talking before we were even ready to go so we just hit record. Enjoy this unscripted and open conversation with a truly influential game changing legend of our time. We sat down with Eddie Fiola, concrete ruler and the original 'King Of The Skateparks'. We go over riding in the late 70's to early 80's, Jeff Watson, his GT days and how that ended in the middle of BMX's biggest recession, the movie 'The Hangover' and how Ed Helms used to ride plus so much more. Eddie was BMX's first super star and it was awesome to learn and hear how much he cares about BMX and that getting out on the bike with some good friends is what still inspires him.
We're back with another Podcast in association with the awesome folks at Snakebite and this one is with none other than the legendary Brian Blyther, the man who pretty much brought style with substance to bike riding. We sat down with him at the Haro office to talk about the Pipeline years, riding for Haro through the golden era and then making the jump to GT during the dead years, Ron Wilkerson's blatant abuse of rental vehicles, life as a bike riding cop, his modern day re-connection with Haro, and what keeps him riding after all these years. Sit back and listen to some great tales from one of the most influential riders of all time and look for more DIG X SNAKEBITE podcasts soon along with our own solo series of DIG podcasts. Just let us know who you'd like to see interviewed by ourselves or Snakebite and we'll do our best to make it happen. Be sure to subscribe on itunes to DIG BMX so you don't miss a thing. Enjoy!
Snakebit's Shad Johnson caught up with the legendary JImmy Levan for the first of our DIG X SNAKEBITE podcast series. Jimmy has been a favourite of DIG since his first appearance our cover in 1998 fresh from the first ever Road Fools trip. Enjoy!
