Wind back 1,000 years and the moral landscape looks very different to today. Most farming societies thought slavery was natural and unobjectionable, premarital sex was an abomination, women should obey their husbands, and commoners should obey their monarchs.Wind back 10,000 years and things look very different again. Most hunter-gatherer groups thought men who got too big for their britches needed to be put in their place rather than obeyed, and lifelong monogamy could hardly be expected of men or women. Why such big systematic changes — and why these changes specifically? That's the question bestselling historian Ian Morris takes up in his book, Foragers, Farmers, and Fossil Fuels: How Human Values Evolve. Ian has spent his academic life studying long-term history, trying to explain the big-picture changes that play out over hundreds or thousands of years.Rebroadcast: this episode was originally released in July 2022.Links to learn more, highlights, and full transcript. There are a number of possible explanations one could offer for the wide-ranging shifts in opinion on the 'right' way to live. Maybe the natural sciences progressed and people realised their previous ideas were mistaken? Perhaps a few persuasive advocates turned the course of history with their revolutionary arguments? Maybe everyone just got nicer? In Foragers, Farmers and Fossil Fuels Ian presents a provocative alternative: human culture gradually evolves towards whatever system of organisation allows a society to harvest the most energy, and we then conclude that system is the most virtuous one. Egalitarian values helped hunter-gatherers hunt and gather effectively. Once farming was developed, hierarchy proved to be the social structure that produced the most grain (and best repelled nomadic raiders). And in the modern era, democracy and individuality have proven to be more productive ways to collect and exploit fossil fuels. On this theory, it's technology that drives moral values much more than moral philosophy. Individuals can try to persist with deeply held values that limit economic growth, but they risk being rendered irrelevant as more productive peers in their own society accrue wealth and power. And societies that fail to move with the times risk being conquered by more pragmatic neighbours that adapt to new technologies and grow in population and military strength. There are many objections one could raise to this theory, many of which we put to Ian in this interview. But the question is a highly consequential one: if we want to guess what goals our descendants will pursue hundreds of years from now, it would be helpful to have a theory for why our ancestors mostly thought one thing, while we mostly think another.Big though it is, the driver of human values is only one of several major questions Ian has tackled through his career. In this classic episode, we discuss all of Ian's major books.Chapters:Rob's intro (00:00:53)The interview begins (00:02:30)Geography is Destiny (00:03:38)Why the West Rules—For Now (00:12:04)War! I tend to be quite reserved, finding it difficult to express my feelings even with those I love. It often feels like I have a protective barrier preventing me from showing my emotions to avoid getting hurt. However, mindfulness is encouraging me to push past this comfort zone. It's important to connect with and share your feelings with those who care about you and whom you care about. This practice is helping me open up more and build deeper connections. Thoughts On Breathing I'm getting into breathing techniques. Our head of marketing, one of my employees, is very dedicated to these practices and has been encouraging me to focus more on my breathing. She believes my life is chaotic and insists I need to take 15 to 20 minutes a day to meditate and control my breathing. She says it will help regulate how I think, process things, and approach my day. I started a week ago, and so far, it's going well. Bullying Story I'm the eldest of eight siblings, and I'm particularly close to one brother who is just a year younger than me. We went to school together, attended the same parties, and shared many friends. I remember a time when some bigger kids were bullying him. It was a tough situation because I had to decide whether to confront the cool kids or not, knowing they might start bullying me too. I chose to stand up to them, and fortunately, they understood me, and the bullying stopped. I've seen close friends go through traumatic experiences during those years, typically between ages 13 and 15, when kids can be especially mean. One of my best friends, who was bullied at school, is now one of the strongest people I know, both mentally and professionally. His resilience was forged through those tough times. Chapter 1 What's Why the West Rules for Now Book by Ian Morris"Why the West Rules---For Now: The Patterns of History, and What They Reveal About the Future" is a book written by Ian Morris. It is a historical and social analysis that explores the rise and dominance of the Western civilization in the modern world. The book presents a unique approach to understanding why Western societies have been at the forefront of global power and influence over the past 500 years. Morris argues that geography, biology, and culture are the determining factors behind the West's ascendency.By examining various aspects such as geography, agriculture, warfare, energy consumption, and social development, Morris constructs a social development index called the Social Development Index (SDI). This index measures the progress of societies based on four key aspects: energy capture, organization, war-making capacity, and information technology. Throughout the book, Morris assesses the development and achievements of different civilizations, including those of the East, the Middle East, Eurasia, and the Americas. By comparing their trajectories and advancements in the four dimensions, Morris provides a comprehensive analysis of why the West has risen to global prominence. The book also delves into the potential future of global power and what it might entail in terms of balance between East and West. Morris contemplates whether East Asian civilizations, primarily China, could surpass the West in the future due to their rise in economic power and technological advancements."Why the West Rules---For Now" offers a broad understanding of historical patterns and their impact on the contemporary global landscape. Morris's work challenges conventional wisdom by presenting a data-driven analysis of societal development.Chapter 2 Is Why the West Rules for Now Book A Good BookOpinions on whether a book is good or not can vary greatly from person to person, as it depends on individual tastes and interests. However, "Why the West Rules for Now" by Ian Morris is generally well-regarded and highly recommended by many readers and critics. It is a comprehensive and thought-provoking analysis of world history, exploring the reasons behind the dominance of the Western world in recent centuries. If you are interested in history, civilization, and the factors that shape our modern world, this book is likely to be a worthwhile read.Chapter 3 Why the West Rules for Now Book by Ian Morris Summary"Why the West Rules for Now: The Patterns of History and What They Reveal About the Future" by Ian Morris is a book that explores the reasons behind the dominance of the Western world in global affairs, specifically focusing on economic and military power. The book argues that the West's current superiority can be attributed to geography, biogeography, and cultural development.Morris presents a framework called the Social Development Index (SDI), which captures the key factors that determine a society's development. He divides the world into East and West and uses the SDI to compare the two regions throughout history. According to Morris, the East had a head start in terms of civilization, as societies in China and the Middle East were more advanced in the early stages of human development. However, Morris argues that geography played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of social development. The East faced geographical constraints, such as the presence of large deserts and landlocked regions, which limited their ability to expand and innovate. In contrast, the West had more fertile land, navigable rivers, and a wider coastline, allowing for easier trade, communication, and technological...
Last fall, administrators at Gettysburg College announced the shuttering of the prestigious Gettysburg Review. This just seemed like the latest in a long string of magazines and journals that have closed the past few years.Curious about what's going on, I called Travis Kurowski, a leading expert on literary magazines, to help me understand what was happening. Today's podcast features the interview we recorded in the immediate aftermath of the news last October. But, Kurowski, who has also appeared on CNN.com and elsewhere, was able to shed light on broader themes and trends. We discuss why an entire ecosphere of literary journals—supported for nearly 100 years by institutions of higher ed—may also be in deep trouble. And we explore the ways in which recent tech has changed reading habits, and why that will continue to doom some journals, even as others are adapting themselves to stay relevant to 21st century literary culture. This conversation is well worth listening to for anyone who wants to publish in—or is concerned about the well-being and future of—literary magazines and journals. Some of my biggest takeaways from this interview* Outside prestige isn't enough to save storied journals like The Gettysburg Review. While many writers took to social media to point out that most of the world wouldn't know about Gettysburg College if it wasn't for the Review, that argument didn't seem to matter much to administrators. The problem was, rather, one of economics…and the readiness with which both college administrators and corporate interests are willing to cut arts funding. As with pretty much every business in the world, the pandemic gutted operating revenues at Gettysburg; it has been running significant deficits recently—a $6.7 million deficit in 2021 alone. When the college was looking for expense lines to cut, they focused on those (like the Review) which, they claimed, didn'tdirectly enhance student life. That last argument is a highly dubious one, by the way. Plenty of students learned a ton about literary publishing thanks to helping to produce the Review over the years. But this is the story that the administrators told themselves and the rest of us.* The sustainability of literary journals—especially those connected with colleges and universities—feels more fragile than ever.Literary journals have been associated with higher ed for almost a century. Often these journals were seen as prestige projects, aimed at enhancing the institutions beyond its walls—even as these journals were often subject to the vagaries of institutional budgets, priorities, and department allegiances."Literary journals have been on higher education campuses for...almost 100 years now...and sometimes they get cut from the budgets," Kurowski says. The difference today? Higher ed is facing greater economic pressures than ever before. Bloated administrations and a major decrease in enrollments—what Kurowski calls “the cliff of 18-year-olds”—are shrinking budgets. And with college and university budgets facing bleak prospects for the foreseeable future, the days of university-funded literary journals and similar prestige projects may be behind us.* Many literary journals haven't adapted to the digital “literary economy”…and they're getting left behind. It won't be news that the way we consume media has radically changed even in the span of a decade or two. With the advent of the internet and mobile technology, readers have migrated, en masse, to the digital landscape. And that has major implications for old-school print literary journals:“You walk down any hallway, anywhere in your house, right? And we're just staring at their phones. We're reading differently, we're writing differently, we're talking differently online. But our literary journals kind of look the same as they did 50 or 70 years ago,” Kurowski says.By way of example, Kurowski points out that when he went to look at the Gettsyburg Review website to prep for our interview, he wasn't able to click on any of the poems or short stories. So it's really necessary for journals to reassess how readers today (and beyond) are accessing their content.* Readers are no longer reading cover-to-cover…and journals need to embrace that change. The problem goes beyond clickable websites. The very way we consume print magazines has profoundly shifted—something that publishing expertJane Friedmanhas explored extensively. In her book The Business of Being a Writer, Friedman argues that the digital revolution has brought about the “disaggregation” of media. She means that journals are no longer consumed whole, cover-to-cover, but experienced in pieces, sometimes on platforms or in environments disaggregated, or pulled out, from their original format.Today, you can engage with the New Yorker through its website, podcast, app, or even live, as with its New Yorker festivals. In other words, the magazine has unbound—or disaggregated—itself.Similarly, lit journals may have to learn to move beyond their print editions if they want to connect with new readers today. “You don't want to focus too much on the container but rather the content,” Kurowski says.* Additionally, journals need to do a better job of “community building” …and those that are doing so are succeeding.Kurowski underscores the importance of creating community beyond the physical pages of the journals. The value of literary journals today goes well beyond the content they feature…and has a lot to do with the cultural experience they can offer.“If a journal is not doing that, if they're not creating a brand, creating a community, creating an experience…it's going to be hard for them to fit into the 21st century, where content is essentially expected to be free,” he says.He cites publications like The Georgia Review and even the newly-revived The Believer magazine as examples of journals that have successfully reconceptualized what it means to be connect with readers today.About My GuestTravis Kurowski is an associate professor of creative writing at York College. "If we carry on looking at these industrialised economies, not thinking about what it is they're actually doing and what the potential of this is, you can make an argument that, yes, rates of growth are slowing, the rate of innovation is slowing. But it isn't. What we're doing is creating wildly new technologies: basically producing what is nothing less than an evolutionary change in what it means to be a human being. But this has not yet spilled over into the kind of growth that we have accustomed ourselves to in the fossil-fuel industrial era. That is about to hit us in a big way." — Ian MorrisIn today's episode, host Rob Wiblin speaks with repeat guest Ian Morris about what big-picture history says about the likely impact of machine intelligence. Ian Morris, the founder of Listening to Smile, is a trailblazer in frequency music. His company boasts an impressive discography of 700 songs, fulfilling his promise to produce 12 new albums every year. The unique aspect of this music lies in its Hz frequencies that specifically target the body, chakras, Earth, and other planets. The music is created with a deep intention to provide healing for listeners and every instrument is tuned to these frequencies. Morris' cutting-edge production method has proven to alleviate trauma, improve sleep, increase focus, reduce stress, provide emotional healing, and support the immune system. His music has become a powerful gateway to enhance meditation practices for those in the spiritual fields. Fortunate enough to grow up in a household filled with music, thanks to his multi-instrumentalist father, Ian didn't start playing music until he was 18. He quickly became enamored with punk and rock bands and developed a love for various forms of art, including graffiti, visual art, and poetry. However, it wasn't until he fell ill in 2011-2012 that his interest in music took a different direction. He began exploring music through mindfulness, sound healing, and frequency, delving into the scientific side of music and working with it in new ways. Adding breathwork and intention setting to his process, led him to create SMILE Was Born, a company dedicated to promoting mindfulness through music.Visit the show notes for more: https://www.BelovedHolistics.com/podcast/126Learn More & Connect with Ian :Website: https://nriley--listeningtosmile.thrivecart.com/lts-membership/(30% off membership)Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/listeningtosmile/Sponsorship made possible by:AHCC - code BELOVED for 10% off on Immune IntelBIRTHFIT - code BELOVED to get one month FREE in their B! How can geography explain Brexit and Britain's changing relationship with the rest of the world? In this episode, we speak with Dr. Ian Morris, a historian and archeologist at Stanford University. His latest book, “Geography is Destiny,” chronicles the ten-thousand-year history of Britain's relationship with Europe and how it has adapted in a globalizing world. When most historians set out to write a book, they choose a particular point in history to dive deep into. But Ian Morris prefers to write about history from the 10,000-foot view- or in some cases, the 10,000-year view. He calls it big history, and on this episode of unSILOed, Greg and Ian talk about some of the Big History topics Ian has tackled in his writing career such as: the evolution of human values over thousands of years, how war has shaped our various cultures, and how Britain's recent choice to the leave the European Union is actually rooted in 10,000-year-old history in the country. Ian Morris is a historian and archaeologist and teaches in the Stanford Classics department. Episode Quotes:Fairness is a fundamental human value40:15: There are certain things that unite all human beings, just as part of our biology. You can talk about such thing as human nature, and part of human nature, which is actually not that different from many other animal natures, is this idea of fairness that we all want to be treated fairly. And this is something you find, whether you're in a hunting gatherer society, or an ancient farming society, or in your modern California: fairness is a fundamental human value.52:24: Life for many people in the wealthier parts of the world is being transferred onto a digital platform. We're living in different ways from people in the past, and we're able to do that because we consume so much more energy than they have. The mechanism that led to diffusion of values across the world42:43: We are completely free to devise whatever moral system we want. But if you devise an inefficient system of cultural values and live next door to somebody whose system works much more efficiently, they're going to steal all your food and kill you. And this is the mechanism that led to the diffusion of values across the world in different periods. Are people the same all over the world?20:09: People are pretty much all the same in the sense of, say, large groups of people are pretty much all the same. You'll get about the same proportion of selfish, mean-spirited ones and same proportion of generous, kind ones, hardworking ones, and lazy ones wherever you look around the world, and the culture does inflect these biological forces, but it's the biology that's really in the driving seat.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Francis BaconJared DiamondJames WattJules VerneH.G WellsGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Stanford UniversityProfessional Profile at The British AcademyProfessional Profile on World Economic ForumContributor's Profile on Foreign Policy Research InstituteHis Work:Ian Morris on Google ScholarGeography is Destiny: Britain and the World, a 10,000 year historyForagers, Farmers, and Fossil Fuels: How Human Values Evolve War! Ian calls himself a sound alchemist; however, his personal story is Joe Dispenza-level fascinating. In 2011, he was diagnosed with colon cancer and MS. Ian's cancer was advanced, but because he didn't have insurance as a musician, he didn't seek the treatments or see the specialists that doctors referred him to. The medical debt became too much that he had to accept death or dive into holistic healing. Along his journey, Ian discovered The Healing Power of Sound, which naturally intrigued him as a musician, and he began working with frequencies alongside deep meditation and mindfulness. Breathwork, meditation and sound healing were the gateways to helping him shift his mindset which in turn gave him the strength to change his eating and sleeping habits. It was the combination of diet, proper sleep and the holistic modalities that facilitated his healing. Overtime, he successfully reversed both diagnoses. This is what inspired him to begin Listening to Smile Provided Links: https://www.listeningtosmile.com/ https://www.instagram.com/listeningtosmile/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgKg8GohfyirzZeOW92Aeag Ready to become an FDN practitioner and do work you LOVE? In Geography Is Destiny: Britain and the World--A 10,000-Year History (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2022), Ian Morris chronicles the eight-thousand-year history of Britain's relationship to Europe as it has changed in the context of a globalizing world. When Britain voted to leave the European Union in 2016, the 48 percent who wanted to stay and the 52 percent who wanted to go each accused the other of stupidity, fraud, and treason. In reality, the Brexit debate merely reran a script written eight thousand years earlier, when the rising seas physically separated the British Isles from the European continent. Ever since, geography has been destiny—yet it is humans who get to decide what that destiny means. Ian Morris, the critically acclaimed author of Why the West Rules—for Now, describes how technology and organization have steadily enlarged Britain's arena, and how its people have tried to turn this to their advantage. For the first seventy-five hundred years, the British were never more than bit players at the western edge of a European stage, struggling to find a role among bigger, richer, and more sophisticated continental rivals. By 1500 CE, however, new kinds of ships and governments had turned the European stage into an Atlantic one; with the English Channel now functioning as a barrier, England transformed the British Isles into a United Kingdom that created a worldwide empire. Since 1900, however, thanks to rapid globalization, Britain has been overshadowed by American, European, and—increasingly—Chinese actors. But in trying to find its place in a global economy, Britain has been looking in all the wrong places. The eight-thousand-year story bracingly chronicled by Geography Is Destiny shows that the great question for the coming century is not what to do about Brussels; it's what to do about Beijing. Oftentimes when I sit in ceremony with plant medicines & psychedelics alike, I am enamored not only by the effects these medicines can produce, but also by how incredibly unique the experience of music is when connecting with these medicines. The best part about this, in my opinion, is that once I experienced this, music has never been the same in my life since. I truly feel that music IS a psychedelic experience &, for me, the music that todays guest on the show creates is at the absolute top of my list with regards to being able to have a psychedelic experience even with no medicines added to the equation. As vibrational beings, music has the ability to heal us in profound ways &, quite literally, “tune” the instrument that we all are & in todays episode, we will be diving into the psychedelic nature of music, the ability for music to guide psychedelic experiences & the journey that our guest embarked upon in search of his own ability to heal himself when he was facing a series of health challenges & the results that his project, “Listening To Smile”, not only did for him, but has been able to do for thousands of others who have benefitted from the magic he is creating in this project. Show Notes:(2:38) How Ian first became interested in interacting with the psychedelic world. (7:36) How Ian engaged with psychedelics in a way to continue allowing his life to become a psychedelic. Wind back 1,000 years and the moral landscape looks very different to today. Most farming societies thought slavery was natural and unobjectionable, premarital sex was an abomination, women should obey their husbands, and commoners should obey their monarchs. Wind back 10,000 years and things look very different again. Most hunter-gatherer groups thought men who got too big for their britches needed to be put in their place rather than obeyed, and lifelong monogamy could hardly be expected of men or women. Why such big systematic changes — and why these changes specifically? That's the question best-selling historian Ian Morris takes up in his book, Foragers, Farmers, and Fossil Fuels: How Human Values Evolve. Ian has spent his academic life studying long-term history, trying to explain the big-picture changes that play out over hundreds or thousands of years. Links to learn more, summary and full transcript. But the question is a highly consequential one: if we want to guess what goals our descendants will pursue hundreds of years from now, it would be helpful to have a theory for why our ancestors mostly thought one thing, while we mostly think another. Big though it is, the driver of human values is only one of several major questions Ian has tackled through his career. In today's episode, we discuss all of Ian's major books, taking on topics such as: • Why the Industrial Revolution happened in England rather than China • Whether or not wars can lead to less violence • Whether the evidence base in history — from document archives to archaeology — is strong enough to persuasively answer any of these questions • Why Ian thinks the way we live in the 21st century is probably a short-lived aberration • Whether the grand sweep of history is driven more by “very important people” or “vast impersonal forces” • Why Chinese ships never crossed the Pacific or rounded the southern tip of Africa • In what sense Ian thinks Brexit was “10,000 years in the making” • The most common misconceptions about macrohistory Get this episode by subscribing to our podcast on the world's most pressing problems and how to solve them: type ‘80,000 Hours' into your podcasting app. Producer: Keiran Harris Audio mastering: Ben Cordell Transcriptions: Katy Moore
