This podcast has been in the works for a few years now with Crit Plate's Mike Rodrigues. Mike literally flew into town to do this, and not only did we record a podcast but he also hung out for the day and started to put some ideas together to work together for our teams and grassroots programs for 2024. Mike also donated custom plates for our upcoming 2nd Annual British BMX Hall of Fame with 01 plates for next weekend's event over in the UK. We talk all things Crit plates on this Pod from starting in 1980, growing Crit and sponsoring some of the biggest Pros and Teams of the 80s and 90s including Murray, Blue Max, Charles Townsend, Todd Slavik, Eric Rupe, Shelby James and Todd Lyons just to name a few. Mike talks about Crit's rivalry with Zeronine, paying riders $2500 for getting a Magazine cover and UGP coming into the plate game. We talk about Crit plate sponsoring the 1992 NBL Grands until Mike got to the track and saw GT banners everywhere and chasing down Bob Tedesco to find out what was going on. We talked about his hiatus from BMX to coming back in 2009 and so much more. Check it out.

Featured Musician: Legume The Video: [After THE JUMP: What we said] --------------------- 1. Illinois Preview starts at the top Chase Brown might be hurt. Their running game runs everything under the Harbaugh sun—good thing we've seen that in practice a few times. Their defense will man up and blitz you, except against Purdue for some reason, which didn't work out for them. 2. Nebraska After Review starts around 2:05PM Running game execution is a hell of a thing to hang your hat on. Panic about the deep passing game yet? What about getting pressure? Yes, Michigan gets sacks, but mostly against bad competition and late when teams are in comeback mode. DTs are the best part of the defense. 3. Hoops Arizona State starts around 2:35PM Sometimes shots don't go down/go down and it's very dumb but this team isn't built to have Hunter do this all by himself. 4. Hockey starts around 3:00PM Jett gets a star. Spacing with Hunter is a hell of an offense. About the Featured Musician Legume (Bandcamp, Facebook, Spotify) is a Detroit group fronted by Liam McNitt. It's chill acoustic or plucking-at-a-Fender vibe stuff but there's a hint of funk or jazz that creeps in sometimes. Liam's voice has a Julian Casablancas lilt. The lyrics are clever, though the poetry trips over itself at times. Featured Musician: On the Line The Video: [After THE JUMP: What's to be said] --------------------- 1. Nebraska Preview starts at the top How so bad? QB is out, which means they can't throw to their receivers, who are the part of their offense that's good. The OL isn't, especially in pass pro. DTs are moveable, they have a DE who can rush. NOBODY can tackle. 2. Rutgers After Review starts around 5:25PM Schiano had interesting stuff planned. Brian got REALLY positive on McCarthy's throws, wanted the WRs to make at least a couple of their 13 opportunities to make a play. THe diff 3. Hoops vs IPFW and EMU Preview starts around 5:45PM Jett's offense WHEEEEEE and definitely not Houstan. Defense: needs to come along like Houstan. High on Bufkin's performance, but he can't play down so it's really up to Jett to fix his closeout issues, effort issues, boxout issues. Did we mention the offense? WHEEEEEE!!!!! 4. Seth's World Cup Segment starts around 6PM I know nothing about these kids so I ask Brian and he says we are young and hungry and injured at mid-backer and apparently coastline is important? Go go USA! About the Featured Musician I'm reusing a band we featured years ago, On the Line, because I rediscovered them in my folder and worked to them all week. I don't think they're in operation anymore but I wanted to give Ryan and Frank and Calvin and Zach a shoutout anyways for helping me get through some rough Rutgers charting. Featured Musician: Jacob Sigman [After THE JUMP: What's said] --------------------- 1. Rutgers Preview starts at the top Why do we keep making Alex watch bad football? Should not be a competitive game on either side of the ball 2. An Interview with Regent Mike Behm starts at 25:00 Behm is up for re-election on Tuesday and he stopped by to talk about President Ono, tuition cost, housing, and NIL. 3. MSU After Review starts at 45:39 Brian is still hip on JJ but there were throws missed. OLs getting more stars on the FFFF diagram soon? Rod Moore was very good. 4. Hockey starts at 1:03:32 A generally strong non-conference performance but it's a young team with some hiccups. Fantilli? Awesome. Other freshmen? Coming along. Naurato landed his first big recruit in Nick Moldenhauer from the Chicago Steel. About the Featured Musician It's Jacob Sigman (Spotify, Bandcamp) and turn on the first 10 seconds of "The World is Ending" and you'll get it—genre-wise I'd call it Ann Arborish pop soul humor. This guy was at the Blind Pig a few weeks back and killed it. MSU Preview starts about 5PM How much respect do we give a QB who can lay it in there or get lit up. Jayden Reed is a star right? How much of their defensive renaissance was getting back two of their veteran stars and how much was Wisconsin's offense being so bad they got their coach fired? 2. UM Regent Jordan Acker starts at 31:14 Direction of the university, NIL, etc. Then Brian goes YIMBY. 3. Penn State: The Offense starts at 49:50 Blowout dissection fun time. That was lots of rushing yards: how did they do it? Maybe they shifted more McCarthy practice time to run game? It worked! What was PSU doing? 4. Penn State: The Defense starts at 1:08:07 All aboard the Sainristil train. Minter was PREPARED for this one. About the Featured Musician Obviously saved this one for this one. Bacon on his new book The Greatest Comeback on the 1972 Summit Series starts at 31:06 The Canadians were so sure of themselves. Then they had to go into the Columbus, Ohio, of countries to win back their pride. 3. Bacon and Hockey starts at 45:45 Bacon coached against Narauto so he's got 4. Indiana After Review starts at 1:00:00 Okay Klatt, what did you find? Well, how did it go with Barnhart? Was there a Mike Hart Effect? Dealing with Screens. How real is the pass rush? About the Featured Musician This week it's the Craig Brown Band (Website. Spotify.) He's country, but tongue in cheek country. One thing my college friend core group (who were all in a band) does when we get together is pull out acoustic guitars and genre-bend. Craig Brown reminds me of that…putting a blues riff on an Old Blue Eyes classic or The song choices: Overthinking Get This Money Shoulda Been Fishin' Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken now now, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat THE USUAL LINKS: Helpful iTunes subscribe link General podcast feed link What's with the theme music?

Featured Musician: Orochen Video is Here: [After THE JUMP: What's to be said] --------------------- 1. Indiana Preview starts at the top Where'd everybody go? Alex likes one linebacker, thinks their formerly great corner Tiawan Mullen has lost it and the other CB might be hurt. They get interesting blitzes but need a true freshman who's 6'5/220 to get to the QB. Tight end city them? Hit them deep? Both? Both. On offense they're an every kind of screen team, but bad at it. 2. Hockey Preview wsg David Nasternak starts at 23:10 Lindenwood? We know their coach used to play for the Wings. Don't care because let's get into the defense, starting with Luke Hughes, Hobey Baker favorite barring weirdness from the voters. Edwards is a guy we're looking to see a big step up from. Nazar might be out awhile so we'll get to see them throw the 4th through 9th forward spots in a blender and put together a good checking line around Moyle. Love the top line of Samo with Fantilli and Duke. Poor ND got their best two recruits stolen by Michigan and Minnesota. 3. Iowa After Review: Defense starts at 50:53 Nothing to learn from the secondary except I have a farfetched thought about Sainristil. Mike Morris has completed his development into Chris Wormley: set up his pass rushes with technique. Eyabi Okie is a better player than we realized, even after going back and watching his film from FBS (that's for the guy saying we didn't watch enough film—how dare you!). Linebacker is the one real issue—don't get why Colson was spot-dropping, but Barrett gave us what he could and shouldn't have to face fullbacks again for awhile. Mullings take from last week seemed to be on point. 4. Iowa After Review start at 1:06:58 This time it's Brian who has to tell us how they did against the other team's real side. Except Iowa didn't have the horses and backed off, so the OL just got a lot of +0.5s for doing their jobs. Gotta use your QB's legs if that's in the offense, or just do something that doesn't. LOVED the first TD playcall because Iowa is inside the 20 and that's where they get aggressive—perfect call in that situation. Only tiny nits for McCarthy's McNamara-esque game. About the Featured Musician Swedish band Orochen (Bandcamp, Spotify) has an Ann Arborish "post-" take on Swedish metal. They're hit and miss for me—heavy metal isn't my thing—but they make music with weight that brings in all kinds of other genres. Like what if Sigur Ros got dipped in death metal—what would that be? They came up as an band similar to Ann Arbor of my time's Oblivion, and yeah, if Oblivion had been allowed to grow up this is what they might have become too. Featured Musician: Sugar Shack The video is here: [After THE JUMP: What's to be said] --------------------- 1. Iowa Preview starts at the top The new corner is even better than the old corner, who was last year's DB of the year in the Big Ten. Front is a little small—can we run through them as well as around them? Comes down to whether Michigan can take advantage of athletic limitations. Don't throw pick sixes. Offense: um, it's Baaaaaaad. Maybe they'll get some run with the fullback but not with that OL. 2. Maryland After Review: Offense starts at 28:45 McCarthy wasn't perfect but he was still pretty good. Still perfect on anything that's not a bomb, and he recalibrated after he realized his arm strength is back to more than it was when he was rehabbing. We haven't seen him uncork yet this year so that makes sense. CORUM! In defense of his pass pro. Also: OL didn't have a big pass protection test in UMD. 3. Maryland After Review: Defense starts at 55:51 Gemon Green has been fixed? He's not looking around much but he plays the receiver and he runs their routes for them. NFL Player. Also Sainristil: weird that he's only in his first year of defense because he tackles so well and reads what's happening to him. One big play on him but you can tell he's playing run and knows what mistake he made. LBs are playing back and not taking lanes when they get them, and we know that's a thing in this defense because Ross and NHG were good at those. DL is making it better, but time for McGregor to take Upshaw's snaps and split time with Harrell. Mazi Smith: dude. 4. Gimmicky Top Five: Biggest Contrasts starts at 1:20:56 Brian gets mad that Seth's #1 is the obvious one. About the Featured Musician Detroit-based Sugar Tradition (Bandcamp, Spotify, Instagram) is a more rockin, more psychedelic version of Jet. There's a lot of blues riffs, but they're excellent musicians who can infuse enough energy to keep that from getting rote, which is pretty hard to do after 70 years of people riffing on that progression. They're just getting into the studio to record some new stuff but their album Sugar Shack is part of my work playlist and I shared two songs from 2019's Green Machine because I was listening to that while doing UFR this week.
