We're talking about sports! In this episode, we revive an interview Rachel had with Dr. Janelle Joseph. Dr. Joseph is a Professor in Critical Studies of Race & Indigeneity as well as the Founder and Director of IDEAS (Indigeneity, Diaspora, Equity and Anti-Racism in Sport) Research Lab at The University of Toronto. Rachel and Dr. Joseph discuss how Capoeira began her journey to activism, what is Misogynoir and how the media is portraying racialized athletes. We also discuss the ways in which women athletes are speaking up and celebrating who they are. Dr. Joseph's most recent book is titled Sport in the Black Atlantic: Cricket, Canada and the Caribbean Diaspora. Her main areas of research include embodied learning and leadership, decolonizing sport studies, and intersectional, transnational, anti racism studies of sport and movement cultures. In this episode, Aida and Rachel speak with Ghazal Foroutan, an Iranian graphic designer and educator currently based in Oklahoma. Ghazal discusses how to find inspiration as a designer, design activism and her recent exhibition on the Compulsory Hijab Law oppressing women in Iran since the 1970s. Ghazal also talks about the differences of studying and working as a graphic designer in Iran versus in the United States. Ghazal Foroutan studied graphic design and has a BFA from Alzahra University in Iran and a MFA from Oklahoma State University. She has won the 13th Khawrizmi Youth Awards for her illustrations with Watch pieces in 2012. She worked for Studio Shizaru in Tehran, Iran for two years before she moved to the USA in 2018. Tayybeh, a social purpose-driven commissary kitchen based in Vancouver, BC began in 2016 at the height of the Syrian refugee crisis. It started by hiring Syrian women to cook their traditional dishes, and continues to provide employment opportunities for newcomers to Canada. In this episode, Rachel Adams and Nihal Elwan discuss how Tayybeh came to be, the inspiring story of “The Ladies” who bring the love and flavours of Syrian cuisine to Canada; and how they are now giving back to the community by supplying meals to those in need during the pandemic. Rachel talks to Aaiman Aamir, a Toronto based community builder in the tech field about her new book: Our Stories in STEM. The book is meant to address the “leaky pipeline,” a phenomenon where girls are streamed out of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields from a young age. It is written for kids aged 7-12 and features 40 women in Canada in STEM fields today. It's illustrated by all-Canadian artists. Rachel and Aaiman talk about her process in developing the book, Aaiman's experience as an immigrant in the public school system, what it's like to be a woman of colour in the tech field and more. Aida Esmaili talks with Amy Shostak. Amy is a Vancouver-based improvisor, educator, and producer. She started improvising with Edmonton's Rapid Fire Theatre in 2002, and she served as the company's Artistic Director for six years. In Vancouver, Amy teaches improvisation with Blind Tiger Comedy, and performs weekly with Little Mountain Improv. She is also a Festival Organizer of The Vancouver Improv Festival.
