Imaad WasifTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Imaad Wasif. Imaad is a musician, singer, and songwriter from the California Desert. In this episode, we chat about how his family wound up living in the desert, and what it was like growing up as 'The Weird Indian Kid' in that fairly tightknit community. We do discuss his parents and their influences on his musicality as well as his overall worldview. While his family comes from India, his parents thought it might be a good idea to make a hasty retreat from their home country due to one of his folks being Muslim, while the other is Hindu. After a stint in Canda, then London, the family moved to Palm Desert. Imaad's influences know no bounds. His father was a Ghazal singer, the family spoke Urdu at home, and Imaad grew up attending 'generator parties' in the desolate lands that are now famous for Coachella! Imaad generously lets me play my favorite song from his very first solo album from twenty years ago. The we do a deep dive into 'The Devine', the 'Super Consciousness', and what it means to have an 'awareness of self'. Naturally I ask how he came to be basically the fourth member of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs; with whom he has play for twenty years as well. Finally, we dig into Imaad's newest record. This is his SEVENTH solo album, and it is called 'Superconsciousness', and it was released in mid-March of this year. All of the songs are avail in all of the usual places, but YOU SHOULD PURCHASE the new album on Bandcamp. He is eve selling it on vinyl and includes several demo versions of some of the tracks. Speaking of which, Imaad is such a rad gut, that he lets me play my favorite track from the new record. The making of this record was severely hampered by the catastrophic wildfires in Altadena, California. Imaad lost some stuff but was very lucky overall, thank goodness. Follow Imaad Wasif on Instagram to see where he will be playing live next!***LIVE AT PERMANENT RECORDS IN LOS ANGELES JULY 3RD***

Faiz Ahmad Faiz wrote this ghazal from a prison cell in Hyderabad, Sindh — and somehow made it sound like spring. In this episode, Kshitij and Burair sit with Gulon Mein Rang Bhare and ask the question the poem itself refuses to answer: is this a love poem or a call for revolution? They trace the ghazal through three renditions that each find something different in it — Mehdi Hassan's classical composition that gave the poem its first immortal voice, Ali Sethi's Coke Studio version that cracked it open for a younger diaspora ear, and Vishal Bhardwaj's use of it in Haider, where Faiz's longing and Kashmir's grief become indistinguishable. Along the way, the conversation turns to the bandishein of ghazal — the formal rules that hold the form together — and what it means that a structure this disciplined became home to some of the most quietly subversive poetry of the 20th century.

Five shers. No resolution. Just a loneliness so precise it feels like it was written about you.Javed Akhtar's ghazal moves from a quiet, devastating opening — two people, two separate gods, two separate worlds — through indifference, exhaustion, and the slow death of even grievance, until it lands on an image that stays with you: a scream that rose, echoed, and sank, while everyone listened and no one moved.Kshitij and Burair sit with what makes this ghazal hit so hard — not ornate imagery or classical weight, but the opposite. Plain words. Enormous ache. And a radif, bhi nahin, that closes door after door until there's nothing left.

In this striking Jashn-e-Rekhta segment, Zehra Nigah is introduced as the presiding voice of the mushaira and delivers a reading that feels both lyrical and razor-sharp. She begins with her nazm “Jungle Ka Qanoon”, a poem that builds with quiet control before landing its political force. She then moves into a ghazal marked by images of greed, trees, and the fear of dawn. This episode brings together the authority of Zehra Nigah's voice, the depth of Urdu poetry, and the unsettling beauty of verse that still speaks directly to our times.

Ghazal, an Iranian woman in London speaks about the recent destabilisation operation in Iran. This was a prelude to a regime-change war, she says. The chaos on the streets of Iran was no grass-roots revolution. The riots were aimed AGAINST the mass of the Iranian people, and were orchestrated by outside forces, led and funded by the US and the Israeli Zionists, and using the dregs of the reactionary deposed monarchists who are nurtured in the west, in the vein hope they can again be reinstalled in a sick re-run of the 1953 operation “Ajax”, which overthrew President Mosaddegh. That was a CIA plot led by Kermit (Kim) Roosvelt, Allen and John Foster Dulles, under Eisenhower's newly minted CIA regime change machine. It is the monopoly capitalists, facing immanent financial collapse, who are driving to crush the Iranian people to lay hands on again in their mineral wealth and grow rich from their super-exploitation and wage slavery. Iran stands at the centre of the axis of resistance. Women in Iran enjoy freedom, dignity, literacy, education and empowerment, the like of which they do not have in the west. It is for them to decide and form their future - not the financiers and wage lords of western capital. Long live the people of Iran! They discuss Ghazal's journey as a designer, her educational stages, and her impactful first professional experience at Studio Shizaru in Tehran. Ghazal discusses her interest in design research and design history that developed during her postgraduate studies in the US. She mentions that her design history education (both in Iran and the U.S.) was male-centric, and expresses her gratitude to contemporary platforms, such as Khatt Chronicles and Women Iranian Designers, for broadening her knowledge and providing information about women role models. As a woman growing up in Iran, she experienced challenges that made her want to work on projects that advocated for (Iranian) women's rights and equality. She discusses her cultural engagement and political activism through her personal design projects. Ghazal discusses her design process and her passion for the risography technique and how she employs it for her "passion projects"—personal prints, editorial work, and publications. She shares her challenges of balancing teaching, personal project, and paid design commissions. The conversation ends with a discussion about the future of design: AI and responsible innovation, and adaptability to the complex media and communications landscape. Ghazal believes that we need to see design not just as a service but rather as a way to shape culture and create a culture of solidarity. Ahluwalia's latest album, "Comfort Food," includes collaborations with international artists and challenges rising Hindu fundamentalism and nationalism. Her achievements include two Juno Awards and the recent Canadian Folk Music Award for ‘Pushing Boundaries.' “When I was growing up in India, there were concerts that people from all over would crowd into. These concerts featured a repertoire, language and content that was both demanding and beyond the experience of a child. I was, however, entranced by the sound and feel of the music, even from an early age. My father would play tapes of Indian music for me and we would also listen to Bollywood on the radio,” Ahluwalia recalls. “So when a song came on that I wanted to learn, my mother would quickly write down the lyrics for me and I would sing along to learn the melody."
