Reflecting both and suggesting their alternatives, global cinema draws attention to new changes in subjectivity and community that Jeong investigates in terms of biopolitical ‘abjection' and ethical ‘agency.' In this frame, Biopolitical Ethics in Global Cinema (Oxford UP, 2023) explores a vast net of post-1990 films circulating in both the mainstream market and the festival circuit. Ultimately, the book renews critical discourses on global issues––including multiculturalism, catastrophe, sovereignty, abjection, violence, network, nihilism, and atopia––through a core cluster of political, ethical, and psychoanalytic philosophies. Reflecting both and suggesting their alternatives, global cinema draws attention to new changes in subjectivity and community that Jeong investigates in terms of biopolitical ‘abjection' and ethical ‘agency.' In this frame, Biopolitical Ethics in Global Cinema (Oxford UP, 2023) explores a vast net of post-1990 films circulating in both the mainstream market and the festival circuit. Andrew Culp (MA 2009, Ph.D. 2013) is a Professor of Media History and Theory and Program Director of the MA Aesthetics and Politics program (starting Spring 2023) in the School of Critical Studies and in the MA Aesthetics and Politics Program, California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). In his first book, Dark Deleuze (University of Minnesota Press, 2016), he proposes a revolutionary new image of Gilles Deleuze's thought suited to our 24/7 always-on media environment, and it has been translated into eight languages. With his second book, A Guerrilla Guide to Refusal (University of Minnesota Press, 2022), he arms the reader with critical theory as part of a journey through anarchist infowar, queer outlaws, and Black insurgency. He is currently working on two projects: a new structuralist theory of the state's arkhḗ, and a critical history of cybernetics from those subverting it from its inside. Culp's writing on these and other topics has appeared in Flügschriften, Radical Philosophy, symplokē, parallax, angelaki, Deleuziana, The Alienocene, and Boundary 2 online. Being Human: Political Modernity and Hospitality in Kurdistan-Iraq (Rutgers UP, 2024) offers an unprecedented pathway to the study of political violence. It is a sweeping work of anthropological hospitality, returning to the Anfāl operations as the violence of political modernity only to turn to the human survivors' hospitality and acts of translation - testimonial narratives, law, politics, archive, poetry, artworks, museums, memorials, symbolic cemeteries, and infinite pursuit of justice in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Being Human gathers together social sciences, humanities, and the arts to understand modernity's violence and its living on. Fazil Moradi is Visiting Associate Professor at Faculty of Humanities, University of Johannesburg; Associate Researcher at the Institute for Social Anthropology, Austrian Academy of Sciences; and Affiliated Scholar at the Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes against Humanity at the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, Graduate Center—City University of New York. Marshall Trammell is an experimental archivist, percussionist, conductor, and composer. His aesthetics and activism are centered in social change interventions using political aesthetic theory, data creation, mapping, and collective music-and-artmaking in order to relocate the act of co-production from traditional cultural institutions into communities. Hafez Modirzadeh is a saxophonist, composer, and theorist whose music and research focuses on cross-cultural approaches. His research has been published in journals including Music in China, Black Music Research, Leonardo, and Critical Studies in Improvisation. As an artist and educator, I see that this moment calls for a way of working through decolonization and forging a path of care. I like to think of this through multispecies communities so that, as humans, we're surrounded by more than human life, even in our urban environments. This path of care for our multi-species, communities that make up the neighborhood, the community, and ultimately the earth is where I see my call for research and practice. I know Julie Andreyev from my time on the board of the Canadian Association for Sound Ecology and from the acoustic ecology in Vancouver where she is an Associate Professor in the Audain Faculty of Art, Emily Carr University of Art + Design where she teaches New Media + Sound Arts and Critical Studies.Julie is located on the unceded, traditional and ancestral territories of the Coast Salish people, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations, as well as the unceded traditional territories of more-than-human animals and plant life including bears, deers, raccoons, eagles, ravens, crows, hummingbirds, cedars, firs, salals and others.It's the first time I see a land acknowledgement that includes more-than-human life and Julie is a good person to lead the way. Her multispecies art practice explores more-than-human creativity and our relations. For our fourth episode, Scholasticide and solidarity: The mind and memory of Gaza, we welcome University of Toronto professor, researcher and host of the Liberation Pedagogy Podcast, Dr. Chandni Desai and Mount Royal University professor, author and policy analyst with Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network, Dr. Muhannad Ayyash. Discussing the months-long Israeli military onslaught waged on Palestinians, we focus on the destruction of Gaza's educational systems, educators and students, the role of scholasticide within genocide and the global solidarity mobilizing across university and college campuses to counter it. Reflecting on scholasticide and the meaning of education for the Palestinian people Desai says: “Scholasticide is the systemic destruction of the Palestinian education system, which has been ongoing since the 1948 Nakba…But in this genocide ..we are seeing a complete annihilation of the education system in Gaza…When a people have lost everything, including the land …education has become a really important pillar, not just in terms of preserving a national identity across fragmented borders and fragmented geographies, but also as a central pillar of knowledge that gets passed on in various ways that contribute to the cause for liberation. ” Speaking on the rise of global pro-Palestinian solidarity, including on university campuses, Ayyash says: “One of the reasons that the Palestinian struggle speaks to so many people around the world, why we see so many people going on their streets in all corners of the globe, speaking up for Palestine .. Neurodivergent students make up 15 to 20 percent of the education systems population, but with many of these students showing signs of an “Invisible disability” such as ADHD, autism and dyslexia, they are left receiving little to no help by the school and government. Following the release of the “The Illusion of Inclusion” report by the Education Hub, I speak to Senior Lecturer of Critical Studies in Education, at the University of Auckland, Dr Jude MacArthur, about the funding disparity for neurodivergent students which places them at a considerable disadvantage.
It's almost been a month since protests began at Columbia University in New York, where students established a Gaza Solidarity encampment to demand that the university divest from companies associated with the State of Israel. With similar protests subsequently springing up at campuses across the globe, calling for universities to divest from Israel, the issue of ethical and responsible investment has become widely discussed in academic institutions across the globe. In the wake of the international student uprisings, an open letter and petition has been sent to the University of Auckland Foundation to divest from companies that are involved in gross human rights violations and weapons manufacturing. The Letter has been signed by a number of Professors, faculty members and students who are concerned about the University of Auckland's possible investment ties, and are calling for the University to adopt a more ethical investment framework. Oto spoke to Dr Ritesh Shah, a senior lecturer in Critical Studies in Education and co-author of the letter, to discuss the calls for divestment to the University, as well as the current situation in Rafah, which he had also been researching. Since the Israeli bombardment of Gaza began, nearly 400 schools have been damaged or destroyed. Last month, Israel destroyed Gaza's last standing university. According to Chandni Desai, Israel has a long record of targeted attacks on Palestinian academics and institutions that produce knowledge and culture. My guest this week is filmmaker and cinematographer Hope Hall who has built a career that includes assuming the role as Principal Presidential Videographer to President Obama, a position that she considered was the best job in the world. Her journey however started a long way from the White House in a different world as a modern dancer. Hope was born in 1969 in Chicago to Tom Hall, a retired Navy officer and advertising account executive, and Betsy Hall, a secretary. She is the youngest of three children and has three more siblings from her father's second marriage. Her mother navigates lifelong severe mental illness and Hope asked for her siblings and her to move in with her father and step mother, after living in Mexico and Brazil and her parents' divorce. She then lived with her new family in Chicago, California and Connecticut. Music has always played a role in Hope's life; she plays the piano, guitar, and now the drums, as well as being a singer. She also practiced gymnastics in her youth, and classical ballet proved to be the start of her dancing career. Hope took part in dance and theater in high school and college before making her way to Venice, San Francisco and New York as a professional dancer. From an early age she had a sense of social justice and enjoyed story telling so she was naturally drawn to photo-journalism, which gave her the foundation for film-making. Hope studied at the University of Paris III, IV, Center for Critical Studies (1989-90), the University of California, Berkeley, getting her B.A. in History and French (1991) and her M.A. at Stanford University in Documentary Film & Video (2000). Hope then moved back to NYC where she began incorporating music videos and projection design into her cinematography and directing practice. In addition to serving as President Obama's videographer, Hope was Senior Advisor for Video & Senior Road Videographer to Senator Warren's presidential campaign, and then Director, Digital Strategy Advisor and Cinematographer for both the Biden and Harris campaign and administration. Hope lives in New York where she is now enjoying life as a freelancer. Kenneth has been involved with coffee since the early 1970s and has published three books on coffee, including the influential Home Roasting: Romance and Revival, now in its second edition, and Coffee: A Guide to Buying, Brewing and Enjoying, which has sold nearly 250,000 copies in five editions. His latest book, 21st Century Coffee: A Guide, is an unprecedentedly thorough survey of specialty coffee in all of its aspects, authoritative yet engaging. Ken's workshops and seminars on coffee sourcing, evaluation and communication have been featured at professional coffee meetings on six continents. He is Professor Emeritus of Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. In 1996 he was awarded a Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions to Coffee Literature by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Emily Weiner is a painter living and working in Nashville, TN. She received her BA from Barnard College, Columbia University (2003) and her MFA in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City (2011). Can a reserve's chronically unsafe drinking water be associated with a greater risk of suicide for its residents? That's the lethal link hypothesized in newly-released research entitled “Is Suicide a Water Justice Issue? Investigating Long-Term Drinking Water Advisories and Suicide in First Nations in Canada.” Co-authored by scholars Jeffrey Ansloos and Annelies Cooper, their investigative framework connects the colonial dots between relentless indignities inflicted upon Indigenous communities with the criminally disproportionate rates of premature Indigenous death.
