He won the Jive Funny Championship after years of not making it past the first round, which saw him performing to hundreds of people at the Baxter every night for nearly a month at the Jive Comedy Festival. He's also crafted his solo show The Passion of the Curry to a point where standing ovations are a regular occurrence, and his weekly gig at Ground Culture is one of the most popular in Cape Town.In this episode, we hear about how he got dumped on the way to perform at the National Arts Fest, his disastrous Durban debut and triumphant return, and how he became the Ferryman in the Resident Evil TV series. When we recently got a couple of listener emails asking about the swing revival of the late 1990s, host Willa Paskin's first, knee jerk reaction was just: no. She lived through it, and remembers it as being so incredibly corny and uncool. Insofar as the swing revival persists in the cultural memory, it's usually as a punchline or as head-scratcher, a particularly odd-seeming fad.  But then we started talking to everyone who was anyone in the swing scene, from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to the dancers in the infamous Gap khakis commercial. It turns out the 90's swing revival is more involved, more interesting and, OK, maybe cooler than we ever imagined. It's about an underground scene that went above ground in a major way, and how that level of success can obscure what's happening while it's happening—but also long after it's over.  This episode was written and produced by Willa Paskin, Evan Chung, and Sofie Kodner with mix help from Max Freedman. Decoder Ring is produced by Willa Paskin, Evan Chung, Max Freedman and Katie Shepherd. Derek John is Executive Producer. Merritt Jacob is Senior Technical Director. Thank you to listeners Lorraine Denman and Alex Friendly for originally asking us about the ‘90s swing revival. In this episode, you'll hear from Mando Dorame, Michael Moss, Scotty Morris, Tom Maxwell, Sylvia Skylar, Christian Perry, Steve Perry, John Bunkley, and Carl Byrd.   Thank you to Kerstin Emhoff, Tom Breihan, Stephanie Landwehr, and Ken Partridge, whose conversation and book Hell of a Hat: The Rise of '90s Ska and Swing was extremely helpful. On Dec. 25, 1907, legendary jazz musician and bandleader Cabell “Cab” Calloway was born in Rochester, New York. Raised in Baltimore, Calloway left law school in the 1920s to sing with the Alabamians, launching a career that led him to Chicago's thriving jazz scene and eventually to Harlem's famed Cotton Club. During the 1930s big band era, Calloway's charismatic stage presence and distinctive scat singing style electrified audiences. He recorded iconic hits such as “Minnie the Moocher,” “Kickin' the Gong Around,” “Moon Glow,” and “The Jumpin' Jive.” Calloway continued to perform well into the late twentieth century, captivating new audiences and inspiring generations before his passing on November 18, 1994, at the age of 88. Dave Hersh is a seasoned entrepreneur, investor, and advisor with over three decades of experience building lean, mission-driven businesses. As the founding CEO of Jive, he grew the company from a small open-source project to its IPO. After stints in private equity and venture capital (at a16z), he now serves as a general partner at Metamorph Partners, which does "operator-led buyouts" of companies needing a second act. In this episode, Dave shares insights from his book, Reignition, a playbook for startups to get unstuck. He opens up about his own journey of getting unstuck after facing personal and professional crises and why the future of competitive advantage will focus on humans, not technology. Dave and Ryan discuss the challenges of balancing personal fulfillment with business success and how leaders can make decisions that align with their core values and intuition.
