Reawaken Your Voice | Singing, Find Your Voice Again, Holistic Vocal Warm-ups, Creativity, Share Your Music, Songwriting

How do you find inspiration when you don't know what to create next? As singer-songwriters, we often assume we need a clear idea, a finished vision, or a specific project before we can begin creating. But what if inspiration doesn't come from thinking harder about what to make? What if it comes from paying attention? In this episode, we're exploring the work before the work — the often overlooked phase of the creative process where artists gather clues, follow curiosity, collect observations, and remain open to inspiration before a song, project, or creative vision fully reveals itself. I share some behind-the-scenes reflections from my own creative season of uncertainty, including revisiting unfinished songs, experimenting with new creative possibilities, and learning to trust the process before clarity arrives. We'll talk about: how to find inspiration as a singer-songwriter the creative season before clarity gathering creative clues and collecting ideas why inspiration often follows engagement, not the other way around living creatively with open eyes, open ears, and an open heart overcoming the pressure to have everything figured out trusting the creative process when you don't know what's next preparing the soil before the song emerges If you've been feeling stuck, uninspired, creatively restless, or unsure what project to pursue next, this episode offers a gentler approach: stay engaged, pay attention, and trust that something meaningful will emerge in its own time.

Hugo reconnects with an old friend — Josh "CBJ" McKenzie, master barber and owner of The Craft Salon Suite in Grand Prairie, Texas. They hadn't seen each other in over a decade, but some conversations pick right back up like no time passed at all.Josh traces his journey from a kid secretly practicing fades on his little brother with a pair of broken clippers from his grandmother's closet, to becoming a barber who's cut the hair of professional athletes and built a space where other creative barbers can thrive. He talks about what it means to see art in a haircut, how drawing black-and-white portraits as a child taught him everything he needed to know about a fade, and why the barbershop has always been more than just a place to get a cut — it's a community. But the heart of this episode is what Josh kept quiet for a long time: his battle with kidney disease, the months he spent on dialysis while still running his business, and the moment God told him don't worry about it — and he chose to listen. His kidney transplant didn't just give him his health back. It gave him a new perspective, a louder purpose, and the courage to finally share his story so someone else could be inspired by it.This one's about faith, resilience, and what happens when you stop trying to figure it all out and just trust the process.Don't lose faith. Lose fear.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sol-meets-heart--3691166/support.

Victoria Lai has lived several careers in one lifetime: presidential appointee at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, entrepreneur, and now business advisor and nonprofit COO. But her biggest pivot came when she nurtured her passion for making ice cream on nights and weekends while working a serious government job. In this extra sweet episode, Victoria walks us through how a $25 Craigslist ice cream maker and a promise to herself led to Ice Cream Jubilee, the award-winning DC-area business celebrated by Food & Wine, the Washington Post, and Thrillist, and what it felt like to eventually sell the business she'd spent nearly a decade building. She also opens up about her family's Chinese immigrant history and how it shaped both her flavors and her sense of purpose, and why she considers her latest pivot back to mission-driven work the most fitting chapter yet. Blending filmmaking and fiction: Neil Laird is a veteran documentary filmmaker and television executive who rediscovered a new creative spark in midlife through writing fiction. In this episode Neil shares his journey from a small steel town in Pennsylvania to directing documentaries for the Discovery Channel and National Geographic, and eventually finding the courage to self-publish his own novels at the age of 50.Inspired by the fearless reinvention of David Bowie, Neil discusses the transition from the 'tedious' corporate side of television back to the joy of making things up. He delves into his Prime Time Travelers series of novels, which blends his deep knowledge of ancient history with satirical takes on the chaos of TV production, and offers inspiring advice for adults looking to reignite their own passions: stop waiting for the stars to align, don't be afraid of the first 'rubbish' draft, and surround yourself with cheerleaders rather than naysayers.Finding Inspiration in the Unexpected: Neil recounts how a period of unemployment led him to the New York Public Library, where a chance encounter with a book on ancient history completely shifted his creative trajectory and led to his first documentary on the Great Sphinx. The Midlife Creative Shift: Turning 50 served as a catalyst for Neil to explore fiction. Inspired by the fearless innovation of David Bowie, he decided to move beyond the constraints of documentary filmmaking to imagine historical worlds with a fresh coat of paint.Blending Expertise with Satire: After struggling to find an agent for a traditional historical novel, Neil found his unique voice by blending his professional background with fiction in his Prime Time Travelers series – a satirical look at a film crew messing up history. The Power of Creative Independence: Neil discusses his decision to self-publish, allowing him to maintain creative control over his characters and storylines, including diverse and LGBTQ+ representation that might have been lost in traditional publishing.Advice for Aspiring Creatives: Neil emphasises the importance of starting now, surrounding yourself with cheerleaders rather than naysayers, and not being afraid of the inevitable first draft being a load of rubbish.I would love some financial support to help me to keep making this podcast. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Andi sits down with Kathryn LeBlanc of Dragonfly's Quilting Design Studio (and author Kathryn Mykel) to talk about what it really looks like to keep reinventing your creative business when the thing that's working stops working. Kathryn opened a brick-and-mortar quilt shop with no money, no inventory, and no business background - then closed it right before COVID hit. She pivoted to Facebook Lives and made more in two years than she did in five years with the shop. When that dried up, she went to school for self-publishing and launched a cozy mystery series set in the quilting world that regularly hits bestseller lists. They also dig into the business side of running designer collaborations - what makes a 50-week block program succeed or fall apart, how to actually make money from free patterns instead of just giving your work away, and why your free pattern is the coupon (so stop stacking discounts on top of it). Plus, Kathryn shares how she landed magazine features in a short window and why having a publishing schedule from her book career gave her an unexpected edge.Whether you're thinking about your next pivot or just trying to figure out how to monetize what you're already doing, this one's full of real talk from someone who's done it - multiple times over.Don't miss an episode!
