Shiggi loves BJJ and thinks that it can build and change communities in Africa, and is on a mission to open a community dojo in Kenya aimed at empowering girls aged 12 to 18. Shiggi is a BJJ practioner with a background in Shotokan karate, Taekwondo, Capoeira, and working the door as a bouncer in UK night clubs. Her ambitious goal is to establish a community dojo in Kenya that not only teaches Jiu-Jitsu but also provides a safe space for girls to learn self-defense and life skills to counteract some of the societal issues affecting young girls in Africa, such as child marriages, domestic violence, and lack of educational opportunities. The community dojo will be situated in Kenya and serve as a retreat space where tourists can engage in Jiu-Jitsu camps and go on safaris to see lions, elephants and giraffes. Camp attendees will generate funds to support the dojo and its programs. This model not only benefits the local economy but also provides an enriching experience for visitors. Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we talk about the African roots of Capoeira. This is something we have touched upon in several episodes, but I wanted to take some time and talk about what we really mean when we say that. I think the best place to find clues is in other places in the African diaspora and here we will spend some time exploring those arts, and what their commonalities can teach us about their origins!

He joined the army and sought martial arts training on base. Capoeira classes offer a unique and energetic experience. The martial arts community fosters instant connections among practitioners. Cross-training can blur the lines between different martial arts styles. Podcasting about martial arts was inspired by other shows. Reggie enjoys sharing stories from various martial artists. Inspiration can come from unexpected places. Embrace fear as a motivator for action. Life is too short to hesitate on your passions. Start today instead of waiting for the perfect moment. "Survive first, win later. The goal is to stay in the fight." "Martial arts training can be the crucible for developing life skills beyond fighting—mental toughness, social intelligence, and adaptability." "If your goal is longevity, your #1 priority should be injury prevention." "You can't define someone else's success—choose your own path in martial arts and life." -Stephan Kesting Welcome to the Black Belt Podcast, where we explore the art, philosophy, and evolution of martial arts beyond just technique—diving deep into its impact on mindset, adaptability, and real-world application. I'm your host, Harinder Singh, and today's guest is none other than Stephan Kesting—a Canadian martial artist, educator, and author renowned for his contributions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and other martial arts. Holding a fourth-degree black belt in BJJ, he has dedicated over 40 years to martial arts training, including disciplines such as Combat Submission Wrestling, Kajukenbo Karate, and various forms of Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts. His extensive background also encompasses studies in Judo, Sambo, Kung Fu, Capoeira, and Muay Thai. Stephan is the founder of GrappleArts.com and brings a broad perspective on martial arts effectiveness across different contexts—from sport to street to survival. In addition to being a world-class instructor, Stephan has a background in outdoor survival training, having completed an unassisted 42-day solo canoe trip covering 1,000 miles through seven river and lake systems, without seeing another human for 21 days.

Send us a textIn this episode, I want to delve into a rebellion in the 1800s in Salvador Bahia that I haven't heard discussed very much at all in Capoeira circles I've been a part of. Looking into this rebellion, we can learn a lot about some of the ethnic and demographic changes that occurred throughout the slavery era of Brasil, and how that impacted various movements that were developing and acting in this time. We can also trace a through line between this rebellion and another important one that preceded it, namely the Haitian Revolution. I think it serves as an excellent jumping off point to both learn about the story of that revolution and also see how it ties to and influences rebellion in other parts of Latin America. All of this started from a relatively simple question I had one day: Who were the Malês?Music included in this episode is Haitian folk music

Continuing on the theme of navigating modern times and the importance of our closest relationships, particularly friendship, I share a piece I wrote recently:Playing Capoeira in Beirut.
Today, we have the honor of speaking with Raoul Audhoe, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under friend of the show, Priit Mihkelson, and a grappling coach with over 20 years of martial arts experience. Based in Amsterdam, Raoul's martial arts journey began with Capoeira at the age of 15 and has since evolved to include a wide array of disciplines such as kickboxing, Sambo, Shooto, and of course, BJJ. Raoul is not only a seasoned international competitor, having fought in tournaments across Europe and North America, but he's also a dedicated coach and founder of TRIBE Grappling, his academy in Amsterdam. Known for his conceptual approach to teaching, Raoul emphasizes posture and overarching principles rather than relying on specific techniques, a method inspired by his mentor, Priit Mihkelson. In addition to his academy, Raoul is the creator of Whoop Ass Camps, immersive martial arts retreats that bring together enthusiasts from around the globe. In this episode, we dive into Raoul's transition from MMA to grappling, his experiences competing internationally, his thoughts on conceptual Jiu-Jitsu, and how he's building a thriving community of grapplers through his academies and camps. In the city of Goma, former child soldiers are being rehabilitated using capoeira, the Brazilian martial art. Since the start of the conflict in 1996 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, child soldiers have been recruited to fight. After they are demobilised from armed groups, many suffer from mental health disorders like anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The demobilised child soldiers are housed in transit centres while they wait to be reunited with their families. While they wait, Social Capoeira is one of the therapies offered to them. It is a form of capoeira where the fighting is non-contact and dialogue, and wellbeing are prioritised. Congolese journalist Ruth Omar explores the impact of this unique approach.
