Today's episode is a new format! It's Feetures Friday! We've teamed up with Feetures socks to bring you a mini-episode each week where we highlight one of our amazing bRUNch bunch ambassadors. Our community is made of some really amazing humans and we want you to get to know them better. Joining us this morning is Kristin Stokes! Kristin is participating in the Yeti 50 miles ultra challenge starting today at 12pm EST. Follow Kristin on her adventure at K_stokes829 on Instagram. This episode was brought to you by Feetures. Nearly two decades ago Feetures set out to make a running sock that would change the way runners looked at socks. After 25 years in the sock manufacturing business, founder Hugh Gaither recognized that performance socks had changed very little during that time. He created a prototype with a seamless toe and a contoured fit and, with the help of some independent reps, he introduced this pioneering sock to the running world. It was an instant success due to its snug fit and its ability to prevent blisters. Years later, after identifying more ways to improve their product, Feetures unveiled the Elite: an anatomically-designed sock constructed with moisture-wicking fibers and sporting Targeted Compression in the areas athletes need support most. Feetures had once again revolutionized performance socks, and created what is still the gold standard. Still family-owned and operated today, Feetures continues to push the boundaries of the performance sock industry with innovative designs and continues to be the number one selling performance sock at run specialty year over year. What do you fear? Alex talks about what she is scared of and how the fear of being injured impacts her training. You are strong enough. You are fast enough. You can conquer this distance. You can keep on running. What walls can you break down today? What fears do you have? "I'm not afraid of storms, for I'm learning how to sail my ship." --Louisa May Alcott
Producing a race event is anything but easy and is truly a "labor of love". In our second episode of Lace Up with Cortney + Alex, we talk about Alex's dating life (it is short and sweet), running with a face mask, and chat about the behind the scenes of race production. That's right! We sat down (via Zoom) with Lonnie Somers from Hal Sports and dove deep into conversation about what it takes to produce race events (the nitty gritty of it all) and talked candidly about the life of a race director: past, present, and future. Let's just say that putting on running events is more than what meets the eye and is anything but easy, especially during these uncertain times. But, we will say that watching a race directors vision come to life makes it all worth it. But don't just take our word for it... lace up and listen to episode 2 now! This Episode's Community Question: Do you run in a face mask? Have a question for us? Record it here and we will answer it on the show! Learn more about running in a face mask in this New York Times article by by Gretchen Reynolds Alex's Dating Life No new updates. Alex is still dating Mr. X and things are “fine." Partner: Back on My Feet Meaningful Miles 5K Although there are a lot of things we cannot do right now, here's something we CAN do: run a virtual 5K to help support a nonprofit that just launched in Denver last July – Back on My Feet, an organization that combats homelessness through the power of running, community support, and employment and housing resources. Their goal is to raise $35,000 through their 2nd Annual Meaningful Miles, now a virtual event so anyone anywhere can run, jog, or walk! Your miles will help Back on My Feet support its members, especially during this challenging time. Run anytime between April 26th through May 4th. Everyone who registers to run will get a unique “My Miles Move Mountains” t-shirt, a chance to win exciting prizes from Runners Roost, ROLL Recovery and HOKA, access to fun virtual contests, and more! Use special promo code bRUNCH10 for 10% off your registration. Most importantly, all money raised will go straight to their mission. Now more than ever, individuals experiencing homelessness in Denver need our support so please consider supporting this great organization. To learn more about the 5K and register, got to https://give.backonmyfeet.org/DenverMM5K/. To learn more about the organization, its mission, and how their program works, go to www.backonmyfeet.org.
Run your own race at your own pace. Cortney talks about reasons why we run individually. Run for you. Period. Don't get caught in the comparison trap of... “I am not as fast as them.” “I could never run that far.” “I ONLY ran two miles.” “I ONLY ran ten miles.” “I will never place in a race.” “My long run is ONLY 4 miles.” “I can ONLY run a 10 minute mile.” “I can ONLY run one mile.” BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. (You get the idea here). We challenge you to stop comparing yourself to other runners but instead celebrate your own running goals, achievements and victories! You are enough. You are worthy. “Stop thinking you're doing it all wrong. Your path doesn't look like anybody else's because it can't, it shouldn't, and it won't.” ― Eleanor Brown
Let's start a podcast... Episode 1 covers a little bit of everything starting with Alex's "social distancing dating life", running with dogs and running right now during this crazy time, how/why we started running, and more! New Episodes released bi-weekly (maybe more, maybe less) as we try to navigate the podcast world! RECAP NOTES: Tips for Running with Your Dog Get your dog used to running on a leash by building up slowly. Get a harness and a running belt. Don't expect to run the same pace as your dog. In the beginning your dog might go out hard and fast. You will need to train them to even out their pace over time. Build trust and make it fun for them. Don't let your dog pull you while you are running together. This will help keep your dogs from hurting their joints. Use verbal commands like “leave it” to remind the dog not to chase an animal or approach other people or dogs. It will take time for you and your dog to get into sync and figure out how to run together. Tips for New Runners Start with the run walk method. This method uses interval training with a mix of walking and running for a short period of time. Try walking for 3 minutes and running for 2 minute. Repeat this 4-6 times. Start small. Each time you head out add a little more. Your first run can be just down the street or around the block. Eventually build up your time and/or distance. You don't need to go and buy new shoes. Use the shoes and clothing you have in your closet. Check out MapMyRun's Route Finder to find routes other runners have run in your neighborhood or region. For all those runners we are no longer training for a race, continue to run long if you want to. You know what your body and mind needs right now. If you have been training for a big race and no longer have that race, cut back your mileage but keep running. Have fun with the run and add in some speed play. Make sure to join the #WaveHello campaign. Wave, smile or even say hello to those who you passby on your run, while staying 6 feet apart of course. By acknowledging another's presence through such a simple gesture it can bring comfort and truly brighten someone else's day, especially right now. You can also record a fun short video or take a photo of yourself waving to the camera when you are out and about on your run and share the same with us.
