Stage 4 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift saw the riders take on a crucial 21km individual time trial from Gévrey-Chambertin to Dijon. After Sigrid Haugset's stunning solo victory the day before, all eyes were on whether she could defend the Yellow Jersey against the race's strongest time trial specialists. Marlen Reusser lived up to her status as the reigning world champion, producing a dominant ride to win the stage and take over the overall lead. Demi Vollering delivered an impressive performance to finish just 18 seconds behind Reusser, while Haugset fought hard but lost more than three minutes to surrender the race lead. Ned Boulting and Lizzie Deignan break down Stage 4 of the Tour de France Femmes. _______________________________________________________________

The race against the clock on stage 4 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift shook the general classification and ruptured quite a few hopes. Abby and Loren saw the course before the riders raced on it from the follow cars of Liv AlUla Jayco and EF Education-Oatly, and it was not one for the faint of heart. It was for the pure time trialists, and they proved it. The yellow jersey changed hands, and Abby, Loren, and Alex were joined by the one and only Anna Shackley to talk about it.With audio diaries from Marlen Reusser (Movistar), Heidi Franz (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93), and Juliette Berthet (FDJ United-Suez).

Stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift exploded into life with attacks from the opening kilometres. Lucinda Brand was among the first to go on the offensive before a powerful 10-rider breakaway formed featuring Lotte Kopecky, Liane Lippert, Lucinda Brand and several other big names. Kopecky later launched a solo attack with 76km remaining, but it was Norwegian champion Sigrid Haugset who held the race in her hands, leading the road and putting herself in contention for both the stage victory and the Yellow Jersey. We also cover the key moments from the day, including attacks from Lippert and Adegeest, Demi Vollering's crash, Dina Boels' abandonment, and how the battle unfolded heading into the final climbs. While listening to Paige Onweller answer our questions, we found ourselves wishing we could be more like her. Wishing we her organizational skills, of her critical thinking, her ability to adapt quickly. Paige has the foundational pieces to be a Marginal Gainer that makes us think, "I wish I was more like Paige." Paige's focus on details started well before she ever saw a Gravel Race start line. She was a collegiate runner and after that, had a career in medicine. But like we've heard from many runners, her sport led to injury which led her to the bike. At first, her riding was for fitness while she healed. But then she discovered how good she was, and so did others. Namely team Twenty-Twenty Four. They brought her on board to do Zwift racing and Time Trials. Before she knew it she was on a start line in Nebraska at Gravel Worlds. Then her career in medicine was put on hold as Paige took her detailed approach to the Life Time Grand Prix.  Josh and Paige's partnership started this spring in the wind tunnel. The two of them got together for a focused approach on aerodynamics and women. They made some very interesting discoveries which we talk about in this show. Ever thought about waxing hair? You will after hearing them discuss Paige's aero bun.

Quick heads up before we start: this is not a brand new episode. If you are one of our Members you will have heard it in full about six weeks ago, when we released it as a Members' only Applied show. But we thought it was too interesting and relevant to stay behind the paywall, so we have cut it down into this shorter version and opened it up to everyone, partly because we want sports science to reach as many people as possible, and partly because it is a taste of exactly what supporters get every week, ad free, alongside our Discourse community! So join now and get it early, ad-free and with post-pod chats! The show was sparked by Gareth's admission that he paces his Zwift time trials by "trying not to die", which, as Ross points out, is already a sign the pacing has gone wrong. Pacing is not about reacting to fatigue once it arrives, but about managing effort now based on its future consequences. Using the analogy of a budget, we look at the two things it defends against, depletion of fuel like carbohydrate and creatine phosphate, and accumulation of heat, hydrogen ions, and other metabolites, and why good pacing is a skill that has to be learned. From there we get applied. Why has elite pacing become flatter over the generations, why can you never bank time in a long event when the 400 and 800 metres break that rule, and how should you actually pace a hilly time trial? Drawing on Remco Evenepoel's world title ride, we anchor everything to FTP, unpack the concept of W', your anaerobic battery, and show why the extra effort you should spend climbing or into a headwind is far smaller than instinct suggests.Whether you are chasing a marathon PB, a Zwift time trial, or simply trying not to blow up halfway, there are practical lessons here to get you to the finish faster. And if you enjoy it, this is only half of the full discussion. The complete version, plus a new Applied show every week, is waiting for you in the supporters club.LinksRoss' PhD was on the anticipatory regulation of performance. That is, pacing. This is the main summary article that came out of that PhD and related workThe physiological regulation of pacing strategy for performance. Another review article from Ross' PhD workThe Hazard Score, and how RPE interacts with distance remaining to regulate pace, as discussed on the podcastThe paper that analyses world records and shows the surprising finding that performances have been unlocked with faster starts and smaller endspurtsEntropy and positive pacing in the 800m. Nice accurate conclusion, the rest, we aren't so sure we understand! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Eric Malzone sits down with Eric Bormel, Managing Director at Solomon Partners, for a deep dive into mergers and acquisitions in the fitness and wellness industry — breaking down exactly what it takes for a fitness brand, gym, or health tech company to get acquired, what drives valuation beyond revenue, and how founders can pick the right buyer instead of just the highest bidder. Using the recent Rouvy-to-Zwift acquisition as a real-world case study, Bormel pulls back the curtain on the M&A process from first meeting to closing the deal, explains why connected fitness companies like Peloton are finally stabilizing after the post-pandemic crash, and shares why consumer subscription brands like Strava and Zwift — along with wearables like Whoop and Oura — are currently the hottest categories for investors in the fitness tech space. The conversation also tackles AI's growing role in personalized health, wearables, and gym operations, plus the widening gap between CEO confidence and consumer sentiment in today's economy. Whether you're a gym owner, fitness entrepreneur, or just curious about fitness industry trends and investment activity, this episode is a crash course in fitness M&A, business valuation, and where smart money is heading next in health and wellness.
