Golf is at a pivotal moment, where the traditions of the game intersect with the pressing need to care for the environment in which we play. #PodcastersForJustice New York Times bestselling author, Eleanor Brown, spoke to me about the difference between writers and authors, why adoptive families are just like any other family, and her latest novel "Any Other Family." Eleanor Brown's critically acclaimed debut novel, The Weird Sisters, was a New York Times and #1 international bestseller with over half a million copies sold. The novel earned excellent reviews from The New York Times, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, People, USA Today, and more. Her latest is Any Other Family, a novel "...about four children, three adoptive mothers, and one complicated, unforgettable family." Kirkus Reviews described it as, "A prismatic story of family, adoption, and how the people we choose to keep close shape who we are.” Eleanor is also an anthologist, editor, teacher, speaker, and adoptive mother herself. She teaches writing workshops and conferences nationwide, including for The Writers' Table and Lighthouse Writers workshops in Colorado. Stay calm and write on ... Hey - before we dig into this week's episode, I want to tell you about some super cool things coming up with my affiliate relationship with ULTIMATE BUNDLES: The Collective:  The Collective is a membership that will help you conquer your online business, whether you are a blogger, content creator, or an affiliate marketer (or aspire to be one!).  Each month has a different topic and different expert.   This month, March, we're covering Pinterest Marketing.  And yes, I know - I've got my own membership that I'm promoting, THE SMART SIDE HUSTLE SOCIETY.  Guess what?  I believe in The Collective so much that I'm willing to give you three free months of my membership when you join The Collective.   Just email me your registration confirmation and I will hook you up!!   The Ultimate Side Hustle Challenge - it's BACK!  Starting up in mid-March, this challenge is just two weeks and I am a featured coach again.  If you haven't started your Side Hustle yet, this challenge is perfect for you.  There are daily lessons within the challenge Facebook Group and PRIZES!  Check it out here.  Okay, so why does Self Care matter and why do we need it?  One of my favorite quotes is from Eleanor Brown:  "you cannot serve from an empty vessel."  And that goes for your side hustle as much as it goes for your day job, work-life balance, and everything else.  Without self-care, you cannot take care of anyone or anything - and that includes your side hustle. This quick-and-dirty episode gets to the heart of self-care and why we need it.  And I'd LOVE to hear from you on what kinds of self care YOU utilize.   See you next time!

Hello guys! Happy new year. I missed you a lot. In this very first episode for the new year, it is just me, Yemeece talking about a crucial topic to me. You know how big I am on self-development, so this year, I am committing myself to having conversations and reading poems centered around working on yourself and being the best possible human you can be.  This episode "The Stories We Tell," is centered around the narrative that is in your mind and how you see yourself because we are the stories we tell ourselves, and I'd like you to reflect carefully in your me-time about this question: What is the real story you tell yourself when you are just by yourself?  I love this quote by Eleanor Brown and I want you to read it twice over. It says: “We all have stories we tell ourselves. We tell ourselves we are too fat, or too ugly, or too old, or too foolish. We tell ourselves these stories because they allow us to excuse our actions, and they allow us to pass off the responsibility for things we have done - maybe to something within our control, but anything other than the decisions we have made...And it is past time, I think, for you to stop telling that particular story, and tell the story of yourself. Stop defining yourself in terms of them. You don't just have to exist in the empty spaces they leave. There are times in our lives when we have to realize our past is precisely what it is, and we cannot change it. But we can change the story we tell ourselves about it, and by doing that, we can change the future.” Please share with someone, leave a comment, and follow me on instagram @yemeece.  Have a beautiful week.

Her recent educational pursuits has been the completion of a Nutrition Health Coaching Certificate from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Dr. Dodd enjoys traveling, reading, teaching Zumba, cooking, and attending cultural events. With her background in pharmacy, leadership training and her passion for people, Dr. Dodd enjoys encouraging people to be their best and to get the most out of every opportunity that life presents. Her favorite scripture is Luke 12:48…”to whom much is given, much is required” and Dr. Dodd endeavors to live life giving back from the abundant ways in which she has been blessed. Nicole Walker’s Interview Commentary I really enjoyed this interview with Dr. Jerrica and I hope you did as well. I agree with Dr. Jerrica’s notion that leaders must be able to make decisions, sometimes without the insight and support desired at the time. If we aim to move forward as leaders, we must understand that decisions are required! As Dr. Jerrica suggested, we must learn to rely on and be confident in our experience, intuition, and knowledge to guide us. When we become comfortable with the possibility of failing, we understand that failure is just an opportunity to course correct if we keep pushing. A quote by Winston Churchill reads, “The price of greatness is responsibility.” I admire Dr. Jerrica’s decision to put herself first by adding self-care into her morning routine so she can be a better leader. Taking time to nurture ourselves, is not only smart it is required if we want to show up at our best. Dr. Jerrica shared three things she does for herself daily, which is meditate, pray, and work-out. These are great ways to take care of ourselves so we are healthy and on-point. Dr. Jerrica suggested we schedule all of our priorities, with self-care being at the top of the list, to ensure we accomplish our goals and stay focused.  A quote by Eleanor Brown reads, “Self-care is so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” I can relate Dr. Jerrica’s analytical yet optimistic mindset, as I have the same. Dreaming can be difficult for a person whose mind works off of facts and figures, yet it is essential if we want to reach our highest potential. Positivity can’t be quantified in numbers, but it can be quantified in observation. When we expand our horizons we open our minds to the possibilities we have. When our dreams energize and excite us, we should follow them. As Dr. Jerrica said, when we start thinking about what is possible, we can build anything we want. A quote by Walt Disney reads, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Nicole Walker’s Takeaway of the Week Dr. Jerrica mentioned the importance of having shared values with those we do business with, to ensure we have the same priorities and goals. When our expectations differ from those around us, we view things differently and are driven by different measures which can leave room for disappoint in the long run. If we want to be aligned with those we work with, we have to ensure our values are similar and we are operating on the same “frequency”.    I will make it my business to dig deeper in my conversations with others to see if we have the same values before moving forward. I understand that my idea of complete and superb is not a universal view; so, I will do my due diligence to mitigate the risk of misunderstanding be seeking those in alignment with my values. A quote by an unknown author reads, “Sometimes…The issue is simply that their ceiling is your floor.” Nicole Walker’s Leadership Challenge My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life.  I know it’s hard to absorb too much information at one time and it’s even harder to try and implement too many changes at once.  When I attend a training or listen to podcasts I aim to walk away with a least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result.  I challenge you to do the same!  Don’t forget to subscribe to She Leads Podcast for first access to future episodes. And also, like and share this episode of She Leads Podcast entitled “Learn How To Course Correct with Dr. Jerrica Dodd”. Thanks and until next time “Be Empowered and Empower On”!
