If you've been following this show, you know that I've gone through a rebranding. I changed the name up to fit a different style of conversation. To learn more about that, check out episode 60 of Adult Education. A friend of mine, and friend of the show, recently went through a rebranding of her own. I'm talking about Jami Crist. She joins the show for the third time so we can discuss her decision to leave her long time employer, Under Armour, to switch over to startup Super Coffee. The move caught a lot of people by surprise, especially me. Jami broke the news just a few days after our last conversation and she never said anything about it to me. Not that she should feel required to share her life with me, but I want the dirt! It is always a pleasure to speak with Jami so I'm very happy she was able to join me.

Marketing Trends
How Aloha is Making Waves in the CPG space with CEO, Brad Charron

Marketing Trends

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 1, 2021 48:35

Athletes are constantly striving to find their unfair advantage, and most businesses are no different. It's one tangible thing that sets us apart from our peers that makes us stand out. In late 80's Nike searched for their unfair advantage and found it in Michael Jordan and the Jumpman brand. Apple was floundering in a market dominated by its competitor until they brought Steve Jobs back into the fold and the rest is history. Marketing in a crowded segment, such as CPG, those unfair advantages are few and far between. Brad Charron, knows what it's like to battle those brands flexing their unfair advantage. Brad has fought an uphill climb during his days at Under Armour, Lucky's, and now as the CEO of Aloha, he's bringing the heat to its competitors.“There's a lot of choices we make in terms of what goes into our product and our food and that choicefulness. We bring that forward in our messaging. We talk about being the only plant-based company that is a hundred percent certified organic that is B-Corp certified. It's good marketing to try to differentiate yourself. It also just happens to be true, even better. With hot spaces in general, the people on the margins are gonna try to get into this space. It's smart business for them. That does not mean it's the most authentic. And in our case our advantage is that we're walking the walk and the challenge is how do you get that message across in a very cluttered environment?”As a newly certified B-Corp, Aloha is making waves as a business that's committed to the greater good, and their messaging reflects that. On this episode of Marketing Trends I sat down with Brad and we discussed a host of topics, including why, after a long run as a marketer, he decided to take up the reins as a CEO. Brad also touched on his past experiences with companies such as Under Armour, Chobani, and Lucky's, and the role data plays in a marketers strategy, and why Aloha is all-in on omni-channel. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.Main TakeawaysJust Do It: Every company has an unfair advantage, it is what differentiates the company from the rest of its competition. In the CPG space, and in popular channels in general, you have to understand what separates your products and services from your competitors and hone in on that. If you're a health-conscious brand protein bar, make sure you lean into that to separate yourself from the other bars in the same space. Keep Showing Up: Your brand must be where your consumers are. Whether that's in big-box retail, ecommerce or grocery stores, CPG brands have to provide consumers with a holistic shopping experience and meet them where they are. When you adopt a holistic omni-channel approach, you're also setting your brand up for consumers to more easily find your product,  leading to greater adoption.A Brand with a Purpose: If you're a purpose-led brand, not only does your messaging need to reflect your mission, but your company has to align with that same mission. Mission-driven companies have the unique ability to build trust with their consumers, but once that trust is broken, it's very hard to rebuild.---Marketing Trends podcast is brought to you by Salesforce. Ride and Run: the long history of horses and humans running trails - #151

Riding and Running on trails is more connected than you know!  The Western States 100 originally was a horse race, not a running race.  And this year Susie Kramer did both, with one of the fastest combined times ever.  With a broken toe, after her horse stepped on it. "I guess some scar tissue had formed, so the pain wasn't too bad." Yeah, endurance horse riders are tough. Ride and Tie is a very tactical and exciting race, always on trails at least 20 miles long, with two runners alternating riding one horse ... got that?  Courtney will explain it! "My 14 year old daughter said, 'Dad, if you will learn to ride a horse, I will start running and we can be a team.' When your daughter says that, there is only one answer!" This is NOT like riding a bicycle - these are dynamic teamwork events with a human and horse, both of whom have minds of their own.  As Courtney describes Coda: "He can't stand to be behind another horse. It's like, 'You decide how fast you want to go; trot, canter, gallop, doesn't matter, because I'm going to pass you." "It's like he trained the other horses - they would move to the side when we came up, whether their rider reigned them over or not." Courtney goes first in this Episode, describing the strategic intricacies of Ride and Tie, and we note many of the top ultra runners of the era who also were Ride and Tie competitors. Susie is next, who describes why she thinks riding the Tevis Cup is harder than the running the WS100. This episode is sponsored by Speedland Speedland is a brand new shoe company, founded by two longtime designers from Puma, Nike, and Under Armour. Their debut shoe is the SL:PDX, likened more to a piece of equipment than to a shoe. It is trail footwear made from the most premium components available today. Listen to this trail-runner-wish-list: It's the first shoe ever to feature BOA's Li2 Fit System, dual dials with multi-directional incremental dialing for a perfect fit. The midsole uses a new formulation of Pebax foam for ultimate energy return. Then there's a Carbitex carbon-fiber plate with asymmetrical flex – stiff in one direction, flexible in the other. Finishing it off, the SL:PDX uses a Michelin wrap outsole with a customizable lug pattern that can be adjusted for any terrain. When we say it's all there, it's all there. Plus, Speedland gives back 10% of all profits to outdoor organizations chosen by their athletes, and once the shoe reaches the end of its lifecycle, you can send it back where it will be disassembled and recycled. It is our great pleasure to introduce to SHOEphoria two of the most influential members of the footwear design and innovation community.Dave Dombrow and Kevin Fallon are running shoe industry veterans. We have never been certain if this term is complementary or an insult! What we do know is that Dombrow and Fallon have enormous experience under their belts, and both have worked with Nike, Puma and most recently, Under Armour.Dave Dombrow actually began his footwear journey with an internship at Simon Bartold's old alma mater, Salomon. From there he went to Nike, eventually making his way via Puma to Under Armour. There he was responsible for one of the most under rated and innovative footwear ranges of the past 10 years.. Speedform, and specifically the Speedform Apollo.Kevin Fallon meanwhile was on a very similar trajectory, working alongside Dave at Nike and Puma, and also ending up at Under Armour.Kevin's background is in mechanical engineering, but he caught the footwear bug, and has never looked back. Kevin is renowned as an innovator with unique design flair.Whilst working at UA in Portland, Oregon, the home of running footwear, Kevin and Dave had the 'ol corridor conversation.. "hey.. what if..."And from that conversation, the latest running shoe company was born, Speedland, currently specialising in trail running product with the unique SL:PDX.Speedland launched the SL:PDX for pre-order June 15 and delivery Aug. 15, highlighting the equipment moniker because everything about the SL:PDX signifies high-end trail running, culminating with a $375 price point. But it was that “no compromise” approach that meant Speedland placed a focus on ultra-premium materials at every step, not worried about fitting into a mold.Quite a lofty goal!Join us for a truly fascinating chat with these two industry icons, uncovering a few of the inside industry secrets, and culminating with the creation of something very special… Speedland!

89 FKTs is a lot!  And 51 of them have been in 2021, including sometimes 2 in one day.  I presume this is intentional? "I used to race more, but the pandemic caused me to focus on where I live.  And we have a huge history here - some of these routes go back hundreds of years." "It's always about the journey, not the goal.  But FKTs are great - this has provided the structure for me to learn and explore in my own surroundings." We discuss how new Routes are Approved (it's subjective).  And we discover that I once (or twice?) dis-allowed a new Route David had Submitted - dang - I'm called out on my own podcast! David has interesting stories and a great perspective on discovering FKTs in the United Kingdom: "It's like "brutalism" - on one hand it looks ugly and un-loved, but there is so much there." "This one route was an absolutely wonderful find - there as a huge amount of crazy graffiti and old architecture in an industrial section of old London, including a boat being used as a sauna - you wouldn't find this if you didn't know about it." "You don't need to "win" - there's great richness in the stories people are sharing, the logistics and the techniques of FKTs." "More people need to find out about these things." Wow - a new running shoe company! That's gotta be hard - why are these two men doing it? "We've been designing shoes for 25 years for other company's. There was always a compromise. We wanted to build a shoe that was the absolute best - no compromise." "We're always told what the price has to be, and then worked backward from there - we wanted to start with the best product and go forward." Can a new shoe company succeed? "If you work hard, and create a product that means something, you will succeed." "And if we took the same approach as everyone else, you're going to get the same result." Is this a version of the now iconic Nike Zoom technology? "Our SL:PDX is very trail-specific. Effort has gone into new road shoe design, and to some degree track shoes, but trail running requires a very different set of features which has been largely ignored. People have been running incredible FKTs and mountain races, while the technology has not kept up with what they're doing. Until now." Enjoy my interview with Andy Jacob of Dotcom Magazine!  Here are the notes: The new American dream is to become an entrepreneur and build a business that fulfills your client's needs and turns your dreams into the truth. Behind every successful business owner is a funding story and someone mentoring that entrepreneur towards success. 7 Figures Funding was founded by Leo Kanell, 14 years ago, he struggled to fund his first business and realized that funding was a massive obstacle for many new and small business owners. After helping a few friends and family receive funding he started to realize a pattern existed for funding success, and it was already behind many of the most successful entrepreneurs like: Under Armour's Kevin Plank, Google's Larry Page, and Nike's Phil Knight. Now with tens of thousands of hours in business funding experience, Leo and his team have created a systematic approach to connect entrepreneurs with the best funding resources on the marketplace.

The foundation for why Resident Runners was started in 2013 is pretty simple: three men who enjoyed each other's company, getting together for run and then grabbing a beer. In 2021 the bond between Rashaan Rogers, Eric Blevens and Raymond Hailes is stronger than ever, a global pandemic and fatherhood during social unrest would do that. Because now as fathers, they understand the impact of their contributions in running will have for their children, on and off the course. Whether it is supporting a local business like Gueros for their taco runs, collaborating with other crews under the Under Armour family, and hosting the best after party for the New York City marathon. "If you have a vision for yourself, go for it." When Maxwell VanHook told me that before our interview, I knew that he was about to drop some serious knowledge. And he did not disappoint! We started off in an interesting place -- the home -- and he talked about how newlywed life and how he's been re-evaluating the concept of work and code switching in this current age. He also shared a bit about his work as an associate creative director for Amazon Devices, and his role as co-host of the weekly IG Live show Designing While Black. For Maxwell, trusting your voice and values has been key to his success...and I definitely agree with that!LinksMaxwell VanHook's WebsiteMaxwell VanHook on InstagramDesigning While Black on InstagramFor extended show notes, including a full transcript of this interview, visit revisionpath.com.==========Sponsored by Brevity & WitBrevity & Wit is a strategy and design firm committed to designing a more inclusive and equitable world. We accomplish this through graphic design, presentations and workshops around I-D-E-A: inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. If you're curious to learn how to combine a passion for I-D-E-A with design, check us out at brevityandwit.com.Brevity & Wit — creative excellence without the grind.==========Follow and SubscribeLike this episode?
