Time is running shorter than we think, and eternity is closer than we often live like it is. We are not at home here; we are citizens of heaven, called to live with our feet on the ground and our eyes fixed on what is to come. When that reality grips us, it reshapes everything. Prayer becomes less about asking and more about abiding and fighting through distraction to be with God. Love becomes deeper and more intentional, stretching beyond comfort and refusing to hold onto offense. Service becomes purposeful, using whatever God has given to build others up and glorify Him. This is an invitation to live awake! To stop drifting, to stop settling, and to step into a life marked by urgency and eternity. Don't waste what you've been given—live like every moment matters, because it does.

Peter's denial is closer to our story than we'd like to admit. The drift away from Jesus rarely happens all at once, but in subtle steps: pride in our own devotion, distance from His presence, and eventually compromise we never thought we were capable of. We promise faithfulness, yet find ourselves relying on our own strength, following at a distance, and blending into a world that pulls us further from Him. But failure is not the end of the story. Jesus meets our worst moments with unstoppable grace, pursues us with unchanging commitment, and restores what we thought was lost. He doesn't wait for us to fix ourselves—He comes after us in our weakness, calls us out of shame, and invites us back into purpose. What if the greatest relief your soul could ever experience is knowing that your sin has been fully paid for and that the God you once offended now welcomes you as a friend? In Mark 14:43–65, Jesus is betrayed, falsely accused, mocked, and condemned, yet he stands silent before corrupt men; not because he is powerless, but because he is willingly submitting to the Father's plan and drinking the cup of wrath that our sin deserved. The sham trial reveals that Jesus is far more than people realized–he is the Christ, the Son of Man, and the Judge of all. But it also exposes something about us: our sin is far worse than we tend to admit. Sin is not a small mistake but a shameful betrayal that leaves us far short of the glory we were made for. Yet in the middle of this injustice we see the beauty of salvation, because the One we condemned chose to bear our shame so we could be forgiven. The suffering of Jesus reveals both how costly our rescue truly was and how deep his love is for us. As we grow in the Christian life, we begin to see more clearly that we are more flawed than we ever wanted to admit, yet more loved by Jesus than we ever dared imagine. We are a people who sing about and celebrate the blood of Jesus—but why? Every human being stands guilty before a holy God. None of us escape sin. All have fallen short, and justice does not simply disappear. At Passover, judgment fell either on the lamb or on the firstborn son, but a substitute had to die. That night was always pointing forward. As Jesus shared the meal with His disciples, He was declaring that He is the true and better Passover Lamb. The sacrificial system could never fully remove sin. It was preparing the way for the only One uniquely qualified, fully God and fully man, to stand in our place. On the cross, Jesus absorbed the judgment we deserved and, through His blood, secured eternal redemption. He took our guilt and gave us His righteousness. Because of His blood, we are not merely forgiven, we are brought near. Covered and cleansed, we are welcomed into a relationship with the Father, no longer condemned, but adopted as sons and daughters. As the shadow of the cross draws near, two very different treasures are exposed in this passage. In the darkness, religious leaders and Judas calculate cost and control. In the light, Mary the sister of Martha, pours out what would have been nearly a year's wages to anoint Jesus. Her extravagant offering wasn't impulsive; it was deeply personal. She looked at her earthly wealth and decided that expressing her gratitude and joy for Jesus was worth more. The disciples saw waste. Jesus saw worship. They valued the activity of the kingdom, but she treasured the King Himself. And as Jesus received her gift, He revealed His own heart—He was walking toward burial, toward the cross, because His treasure was you. In the end, we all pour our lives out on something. How will anyone know we are distinct if God's presence doesn't go with us? Would we really be satisfied with blessing, momentum, or even success if His presence were missing? From Moses to the early church, God's people have been marked by the reality of God among them. But we also see through the ministry of Jesus that it's possible to limit the presence of God. In Nazareth, Jesus was met with unbelief and cynicism which limited the miracles He was able to do. In contrast, Bethany welcomed, hosted and gave space for Jesus to dwell. God shows up where He is wanted. When skepticism and disappointments shape us, they quietly close us off to what God desires to do. But when we lay those things down and choose to say yes again, we become a people who refuse to take another step without Him. God created us for relationship with Him, not one-way conversations where we do all the talking. He is a God who speaks! He guides, comforts, heals, and leads His people. We come to the Father not because of our effort, but because of His unfailing love. We are like sheep and we are to know the Shepherd's voice. God's voice sounds like a loving Father, bringing comfort in sorrow, healing in brokenness, and hope when we fall short. He speaks in many ways, often into the ordinary rhythms of our lives, and His silence is not His absence. Because we are Jesus people, we want all that Jesus has for us, and that means being a Spirit-empowered people. We live in a time with more Christian content and resources than ever before, yet the church can feel weaker and less effective than what we see in Scripture. The early church had far less than we do, and yet the gospel spread like wildfire because they were filled with the Holy Spirit in an extraordinary way. Jesus told His disciples to wait until they received power from the Spirit, showing that the Holy Spirit is not an optional extra but a necessity for the mission. This invites us to consider what we believe “normal” Christianity is—whether it's shaped by tradition or by the Word of God—and to recognize the two primary works of the Holy Spirit: His indwelling work in every believer at salvation, and His ongoing infilling that empowers us again and again. Christmas is more than nostalgia or sentiment. It marks the moment God stepped into our world to begin the redemption of all things. In Luke 2, we're invited to let the birth of Jesus interrupt our assumptions about this season and encounter the God of the nativity as He truly is. The angel doesn't appear to the powerful or the polished, but to shepherds—men considered unclean, uneducated, poor, and socially insignificant. Yet these unlikely, unnamed outsiders are chosen to hear the good news first, reminding us that God's kingdom is wonderfully upside down. Joy erupts when the gospel is fully understood, and this good news really is for all people. The shepherds respond with immediate faith—going, seeing, proclaiming, and worshiping. This weekend at our Family Service, we looked at the story Paul tells in 2 Timothy 1:5 about how faith first took root in Timothy through his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. Their home wasn't perfect or put-together; Acts 16:1 shows us that Timothy's dad wasn't a believer, and the family was divided in their faith. But God has never been limited by messy families! He loves to make something beautiful out of places that feel broken. Paul then gives us three pictures of wholehearted discipleship: a soldier who stays focused on the One who enlisted him, an athlete who trains with intention, and a farmer who works faithfully even when growth is slow. Does my life compel my children—and anyone watching—to follow Jesus? We all tend to fall into one of two ditches – licentiousness or legalism – but the grace of Jesus rescues us from both. Grace reveals that our worth isn't found in how much we perform or how far we've strayed, but in what Jesus has already done. In Luke 7, a Pharisee's self-righteousness and a broken woman's worship collide, and Jesus makes clear that forgiveness and love flow not from rule-keeping, but from grace received through faith. The gospel isn't just that Jesus died for our sin; it's that He lives for our righteousness. When we truly grasp this, grace becomes a fountain of love that overflows from our lives into the world around us. When asked what mattered most, Jesus pointed us back to something ancient and foundational—the Shema: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.” God doesn't just want a part of us, He wants the whole person. Do you truly know God or do you just know about Him? Sometimes deep-seeded unbelief can take root in our hearts. It manifests as an unwillingness to trust God or take Him at His Word. In this passage, Jesus confronts the Sadducees for their willful ignorance, a refusal to know truth. Yet even in His rebuke, there's good news: if Jesus says they're wrong, it means there is a right. Jesus shows that real faith is found in knowing the truth, knowing eternal life, and knowing God Himself. The Sadducees rejected the supernatural, lived as if this world was all there is, and tried to keep God at arm's length. But Jesus invites us into something far better—a living relationship with the God of the living. Do you truly know Him? Or have you kept Him at a distance? For Christians, what we do with our relationships is the most important thing about us. Our walk with Jesus is meant to be lived out in community, with relationships as the very place where our faith takes shape. We should be able to identify the quality of someone's faith by looking at their relationships. Jesus reorders our priorities: Him first, others second, ourselves third. The only reason we aspire to leadership is to love and serve others, not for status or recognition. The quality of our faith is revealed in the way we love, forgive, and remain committed to others. Yet relationships are messy—people offend, disappoint, and wound us. The real question is, what will we do with those offenses? Scripture calls us to forgive, to reconcile, and to make every effort to live in unity. Those who know they've been forgiven by Jesus extend His grace freely, refusing bitterness and choosing love.
