Sin is often reduced to a list of bad behaviors, but this conversation reframed it as a rupture in relationship and a distortion of identity.  Join Jeremy Jeremiah, Mario Andrew, and Cloud of Witnesses special guests Father Deacon Anthony, an ordained deacon in the Antiochian Orthodox Church, and associate marriage and family therapist, Jacob Sadan (https://jacobsadan.com/) in this frank and inspiring discussion of sin.Drawing from early Christian teaching and cognitive behavioral therapy, our guests showed that actions flow from thoughts and feelings, and those are shaped by how we name what is happening inside us. If we see ourselves as inherently evil, despair follows; if we deny fault, pride grows. The older Christian vision holds a paradox: we are made very good in God's image, yet wounded by passions and habits that pull us from life. That paradox calls for clarity, not condemnation. Naming the wound without becoming the wound is the beginning of healing.  A vivid metaphor carried the dialogue: the black spot on the skin. We can ignore it, try to cut it out ourselves, identify with it in shame, or bring it to the physician. Only the last path actually heals. The physician, Christ, works through the church's rhythms—fasting, prayer, confession, feasting—because rhythm regulates what is dysregulated. Like a garden, the soul shows its beauty when tended with boundaries and care. The point isn't legalism but formation: seasons that humble pride, awaken joy, and train our loves. In this frame, guilt is not a curse; it is the pain signal that says, return to the Doctor. Shame, on the other hand, fuses sin to identity and locks the soul in a closed room.  Psychologically, the cycle is simple and stubborn: beliefs spark feelings, feelings drive behaviors, behaviors reinforce beliefs. If I believe I must fix myself alone, I will overreach, fail, and destroy self-trust. Addiction lives in that gap between imagined control and actual powerlessness. The first step to freedom is admitting limits and sorting what I can change from what I must surrender. Confession becomes a structured pause to observe the inner world: what happened, why it happened, and what to do next. Spoken aloud to a trusted guide, the most terrifying truths lose their sting and regain their meaning as invitations to growth.  Finally, community matters. A church that engages body and senses, offers communion and confession, and pairs diagnosis with prescription becomes an arena where grace meets effort. Outside that arena, there are no crowns because there is no contest. Inside it, accountability interrupts self-deception, and mercy makes change plausible. The way forward is not self-loathing or self-excuse but love, truth, and rhythm: see the spot, feel the healthy sting of guilt, ask for help, and return to the practices that tame the garden. We are beloved and broken, not worthless or sovereign; healing happens where we stop pretending to be judge and return to being patients of the true Physician. Questions about Orthodoxy? The Baptism of the Lord (Year A) - An Indelible Spiritual Mark

Read OnlineJesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him. Matthew 3:13–15John the Baptist was the last of the Old Testament prophets, entrusted with the mission to immediately prepare the way for the Messiah. Today's feast marks a pivotal transition from the Old Law to the New. Prior to Jesus' baptism, John's mission was in full motion. With Jesus' baptism, the mission of the Old Testament prophets is fulfilled, and the New Law of grace begins. Why did Jesus enter the waters of baptism? He was sinless and had no need of repentance. Yet, in His divine wisdom, Jesus chose to be baptized to sanctify the waters, opening the gateway of grace for all who would follow. By entering the waters of baptism, Jesus set a precedent. Every Christian who enters the waters of baptism meets our Lord there, sharing in His life of grace. As we reflect on Christ's baptism today, we are invited to consider our own. Most of us were baptized as infants and have no memory of the event. Others came to baptism later in life, fully aware of the grace they were receiving. Regardless of when it occurred, baptism's effects are profound and enduring. That singular moment of sanctification forever changed us, and its transformative power remains active within us.Through baptism, Jesus meets us under the waters. When baptism is performed by full immersion, it powerfully symbolizes the reality of this encounter. We enter the waters of repentance, as John offered, but we emerge united with Christ. Just as the Father's voice declared at Jesus' baptism, “You are my beloved Son…,” so too does the Father continually speak to us after our baptism, affirming our identity as His beloved children. The Holy Spirit descends upon us, and we are offered every gift of the Spirit, provided our hearts remain open.Baptism occurs only once in our lives and imprints on our souls an “indelible spiritual mark (character)” (see Catechism of the Catholic Church #1272 and 1274). This mark configures us to Christ and signifies our permanent belonging to Him and His Church. It cannot be lost or removed, even by mortal sin. However, while this character endures forever, the state of sanctifying grace within our souls can be lost through mortal sin. In such cases, the grace of baptism is restored through the Sacrament of Reconciliation in which our souls are once again cleansed and brought back into full communion with God. Marked as members of Christ's Body, we are continually disposed to receive sanctifying grace through the other sacraments, as long as we remain in a state of grace. Baptism accomplishes this disposition, enabling us to participate fully in the life of grace that flows from Christ. As we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, reflect today on your own baptism. You are forever marked as a child of God. You encountered our Lord under the waters of baptism, were cleansed of all sin, and were filled with sanctifying grace. Though sin diminishes or even extinguishes that grace when it is mortal, the Sacrament of Reconciliation restores it, and the Eucharist and other sacraments increase it. Always return to your baptismal grace, seeking to live out your identity as God's son or daughter, as this sacred mark intends. My sanctifying Lord, through the waters of baptism, I encountered You and received the abundant grace You bestowed upon me. Please help me to keep my soul free from sin and to live with the true dignity of a child of God. Thank You for meeting me under those waters. May I remain with You, growing ever closer to You by the ongoing gift of all the Sacraments. Rooted in both Scripture and ancient practice, a disciple is a learner who follows a master's teaching and way of life. Jesus' Great Commission calls believers to actively make disciples by going, baptizing, teaching, and mentoring others. Offense is a growth opportunity. How will you respond when another Christian hurts you? Will you become offended and bitter? Will you ignore them and refuse to talk with them? Will you leave the church in an attempt to find a better one?  Or, will you allow the experience to become a tool that helps you grow spiritually? Main Points:1. Every Christian is in process. We are not who we used to be, but we are not yet what we will be in Christ. We are learning and we are growing, but we are not yet perfect. Sometimes we make mistakes, we react, we get frustrated, and we say things we shouldn't.2. We can't use our imperfections as an excuse. We have to own our behavior, ask God for forgiveness, ask others for their forgiveness and seek to reconcile. The mistakes then become an opportunity for our spiritual growth.3. No one is immune to the challenges that come from relationships, even those among believers. We will all face them. Yet, there is so much growth that can occur in our character as we continue to love, pray, forgive, and sometimes confront.Today's Scripture Verses:Luke 6:28 - “bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”  Ephesians 4:32 - “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”Proverbs 19:11 - “A person's wisdom yields patience; it is to one's glory to overlook an offense.”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Persecution may imprison the body, silence the voice, or press upon the mind, but it cannot force the interior surrender of one's freedom. As the Catechism teaches, the heart is “the seat of moral decision,” the place where we choose for or against God.Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and his companions lived this truth heroically. Arrested, tortured, ransomed, and arrested again, they remained interiorly free—joyful even—because their choice for Christ was rooted in the depths no chains could reach. Their witness echoes that of the Apostles singing hymns in prison, and above all, Christ Himself on the Cross. From His place of suffering, Jesus freely offered His life: “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord” (John 10:18). His heart remained sovereign, forgiving His persecutors, entrusting Himself to the Father, and rising in glory.Fr. Tyler reminds us that persecution in our own age may be subtler—cultural pressures, moral confusion, spiritual weariness—but the battleground is the same. Nothing in this world, no government, movement, or ideology, can make the choice of our heart for us. Every Christian must decide: Will I choose Christ today, especially when the cross becomes heavy? The Vietnamese martyrs, the Apostles, and the Lord Himself show that true freedom is found in fidelity, even in suffering. As the liturgical year draws to its close, the Gospel calls us to stay awake, to guard that sacred interior ground where God speaks and where love chooses Him in return.May we, like the martyrs, give Christ our “yes” anew today, remaining faithful until the end when He leads us through death into eternal life.#marian #marians #marianfathers #marianhelpers #divinemercy #thedivinemercy #catholic #catholicism #romancatholic #romancatholicism#frtyler #vietnameseMartyrs #saintandrewdunglac #martyrdom #persecution #catholichomily #saintoftheday #choosechrist #catholictiktok ★ Support this podcast ★

In this tender, emotional episode, Bob and Linda open up about a simple idea that completely reframed how they parent: the "$50,000 Moment." It started with a story Bob read — one so moving he couldn't finish it without crying — about a dad who imagined paying $50,000 to relive a single bedtime with his 10-year-old. That thought experiment changed him, and now it's changing the Lotich household too. If you're a parent (or even if you aren't), this episode will recalibrate how you see the people in your life and remind you of the beauty tucked into ordinary days.   In This Episode: The story that made Bob stop checking the clock at bedtime Why we forget the voices of our kids at different ages The biblical wisdom behind remembering the brevity of life How to recognize "$50,000 moments" in real time Why presence is a discipleship practice—not a personality trait What Jesus and Mr. Rogers both modeled about "holy slowness" How this principle applies to more than kids A tender story about Bob's uncle and what it taught him about presence Scripture Mentioned (NLT): Psalm 90:12 — "Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom." Key Takeaways: You won't realize the value of a moment until it's gone. Bob shares how he can no longer remember what his now-11-year-old sounded like as a six-year-old—and how that realization hit him like a ton of bricks. Future you would pay anything to get today back. The "time-machine thought experiment" reframes bedtime, routines, and interruptions as priceless opportunities. Presence is a form of love—and discipleship. Looking at the way Jesus interacted with people, we see an invitation to slow down and be with those around us. This isn't just about kids. Parents, friends, coworkers, church community members—none of us are guaranteed another moment together. You don't have to create regrets. You can create reminders. Bob calls them $50,000 moments—a cue to pause, breathe, and fully engage.   Practical Ways to Apply This: Ask yourself during ordinary moments: "If I had to pay to relive this, how much would I spend?" During bedtime or stressful transitions, picture your 80-year-old self watching. Treat others—kids, friends, the barista, the bus driver—as people God placed in your path today. Practice the "Fred Rogers pause": give full attention to whoever is in front of you.   Links & Mentions: Gradually, Then Suddenly by Mark Batterson Let's Retire Retirement by Derek Coburn   Share This Episode If you know a parent in the thick of it, or someone who needs a reminder to slow down and savor what matters—send this to them.     BONUS: Ever dreamt of hanging out with us for 6 weeks in your small group or church? Every Christian husband wants to be a good leader, protector, and provider for his family. Yet too often, we confuse biblical husband roles with cultural expectations or personal control. The Bible doesn't define manhood by dominance, income, or authority—it defines it by love, humility, and sacrifice. When we look closely at Scripture, we find that biblical husband roles are not about power but purpose. They call men to reflect Christ—to serve rather than demand, to build up rather than tear down, and to lead through love rather than fear. Sadly, many men drift from this calling. Pride, exhaustion, and misplaced priorities can quietly corrode a marriage. These are not small mistakes—they're cracks in the foundation that can grow into fractures over time. Today, we'll explore five common mistakes that destroy Christian marriages and how rediscovering biblical husband roles can restore strength, trust, and intimacy in your relationship. 1. Confusing Leadership with Control One of the most misunderstood biblical husband roles is leadership. Too many men confuse leadership with control. Leadership, in God's design, is never about dominance. Jesus Himself said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28). A biblical husband leads […] The post The Call to Biblical Husband Roles appeared first on UNCOMMEN.

You probably know that as people get older, they tend to lose their filters. They just say things that might not have said when they were younger. It just comes out. Sometimes old people think they have earned the right to let loose. But here's the deal: If, when you look inside, you see you in you, then what comes out in those “unguarded moments” is probably going to be pretty ugly. If, on the other hand, you look inside and you see Christ in you … then I don't care if you lose your filters, because what comes out is going to be God-honoring. And here it is guys, I can put up with babies who act like babies. But when old guys like me still act like babies, that's intolerable. I know, I'll be battling with my “self” till the day I die. And I suspect most all of you will be battling your “self” till the day you die. But I hope we spend most of our time at a level 3 maturity, with occasional forays into level 4, with very, very little time at levels 1 or 2. Do you get that? Life truth #3: Christian maturity is a choice we make, every day till the day we die, not a state we achieve. So where are you? How are you doing?

Pastor Rob Byker joins us with a message from Matthew 6:13 and 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, titled “Lead Us Not Into Temptation." Every Christian faces three powerful foes: the world, the flesh and the devil. Each one seeks to draw us away from God's will, yet Jesus calls us to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. On our own we are not strong enough to resist temptation, but God gives the strength we need to stay faithful. As Paul reminds us, “He is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

Send us a textDating doesn't have to feel like a guessing game. We break down five clear red flags every Christian should watch for and show how trusting God, not the crowd, changes who you choose and how you choose. From spiritual alignment to character under pressure, we pull back the curtain on the patterns that predict a healthy marriage—or a painful one.We start with the heart of it all: if someone pulls you away from God, isolates you from church, or mocks spiritual disciplines, that's not love. Then we zoom into teachability and accountability—because an uncorrectable person becomes unleadable when life gets hard. We tackle dishonesty and secrecy, the silent killers that cloud conversations and erode peace. You'll hear why watching how a date treats servers, coworkers, and family reveals who they are when no one's grading their performance. And we unpack the cost of a partner with no vision or direction, plus how mismatched goals, theology, and values create constant friction.Along the way, we challenge the myth that romance equals readiness. Infatuation is effortless; mature love is built on aligned values, shared purpose, and honest dialogue. So we trade surface talk for deeper questions: money habits, family history, conflict style, faith convictions, and life vision. We also invite community into the process—mentors, pastors, and trusted friends who can spot the warning signs you might miss. To close, we share five practical discernment keys: pray before you play, ask trusted voices, observe not excuse, look for fruit, and follow the Holy Spirit's peace. If you're single, this is a guide to date with clarity and courage. If you're advising someone you love, it's a toolkit for wise counsel.
