Work and the Meaning of Life with David Bahnsen

Do you work to live…or live to work? For many, the answer is simple: “I work to make a living.”But what if there's more to work than just earning a paycheck? Could it be that work holds deeper meaning—something essential to who we are and how we're made? David Bahnsen joins us today to offer a perspective on work you might not have considered.David Bahnsen is the Founder, Managing Partner, and Chief Investment Officer of The Bahnsen Group, a national private wealth management firm managing over $7 billion in client assets. He is a frequent guest on CNBC, Bloomberg, Fox News, and Fox Business. He is also the author of Full Time: Work and the Meaning of Life. Rethinking Work and IdentityWe live in a world that often tells us our identity has nothing to do with our work. Unfortunately, that idea has not only crept into culture but also into the church. But let's be honest: that's simply not true. Our identity is tied to our work—not in the sense that a job title defines us, but because we are made in the image of a working God.We all instinctively know this. We don't look at someone who is contributing meaningfully to society and compare them equally to someone who spends every day in idleness. That's not about transactional worth—it's about reflecting the nature of our Creator. God created us to be productive, useful, and active. That's not a controversial claim. It's Genesis 1. Work isn't all of who we are, but it is a vital part of who we were created to be.Too often, we treat faith like an add-on. We make decisions about money, career, education, even family, and then sprinkle a few Bible verses on top. But the goal isn't to balance faith and work—it's to integrate them. That begins by grounding our understanding of work in a creational theology: God made work good. What we need in the church is not more dichotomy between sacred and secular, but an integrated vision that sees every good job—yes, even spreadsheets, sales, and software—as part of God's design. This mindset shift must begin in our pulpits. Our congregations need to hear that their Monday through Friday labor is not second-tier spiritual activity. It is sacred. The Relationship Between Work and RestInstead of chasing a “work-life balance,” Scripture offers a “work-rest paradigm.” God modeled six days of work followed by one day of rest—not the other way around. The purpose of rest isn't to escape work; it's to be restored for more of it. Rest has meaning because work has meaning. That's why we push back on the cultural narrative that says rest, leisure, and early retirement are life's ultimate goals. While rest is essential, its purpose is to equip us to return to the good, God-glorifying work He's called us to do.Culture often treats retirement as the finish line—an end to productivity, as if people cease to offer value once they reach a certain age. But that view is deeply flawed. We must challenge the financial industry's narrative that the goal is to accumulate enough so that we never have to work again. That mindset undermines the dignity and purpose of work. Yes, physical limitations may alter what work looks like in later years, but wisdom, experience, and the capacity to contribute remain. Companies and churches alike lose something precious when they usher older workers out instead of tapping into their gifts.Job, Career, or Calling? So, how should we think about our work? Is it just a job? A stepping stone? Or something more?Every Christian, no matter their vocation, should view their work as a calling. That doesn't mean God gives us a divine word about every job transition, but it does mean that the act of producing goods and services, solving problems, and serving others is inherently meaningful. That's our calling: to work with excellence, for the good of others, and the glory of God.To young adults wondering what to do with their lives: Don't believe the lie that you need to find your dream job tomorrow. Instead, embrace the next opportunity in front of you with excellence, humility, and a long-term view.Work is not just a means to a paycheck. It's how we serve our neighbors, develop skills, build character, and participate in God's ongoing work in the world. Some jobs may be stepping stones—but every job matters. The key is to remember the why behind your work: it's about loving God and loving others. Here's the truth: work isn't something we do just to meet our needs. It's something we do because God made us to work. He worked in creation, and He continues to work in redemption. When we work, we join Him in that sacred task—creating, restoring, cultivating, and contributing to human flourishing. Our work builds families, economies, culture—and yes, even the Kingdom of God.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I recently retired and now work part-time delivering food for a restaurant using my personal vehicle. But I think every Christian should have these qualities. Every Christian should strive to be this way. Every Christian not just pastors should be held to these standards in order to be an effective servant of Christ in the world. Every one of us should want to be an influence for Christ on the lives of others

Everyone needs to grow up in life and as a Christian. Babies, both natural and newborn Christians, should be a great blessing. But it's not a blessing if they stay babies. They need to grow up strong and healthy. One of the root problems of modern Christianity is what Juan Carlos Ortiz has described as ‘The permanent childhood of the believer.'  The New Testament Epistles are full of exhortations to help us grow up in Christ, and the apostle Paul described this as the whole purpose of his ministry (Colossians 1:28). He understood that the various leadership roles in the church were to equip and mature the church (Ephesians 4:12-14; 1 Corinthians 13:11). Every Christian needs to grow up in our knowledge of God, in love, in the anointing of the Holy Spirit, in perseverance and in becoming more like Jesus. Of course, newly born-again Christians need a lot of care, attention, encouragement, protection, and direction. That's why we need mature disciples, both older and younger, to act like a spiritual mum and dad to help those new to faith. New believers often have a lot of questions as so much is so different to anything they have known before. They need established Christians to accept them, be patient with them and give all the answers that they can. We should never put heavy burdens and unrealistic expectations and goals on new Christians. But we can and should expect every true Christian to grow up from spiritual infancy. We see three practical areas where every Christian needs to move from immaturity to maturity:   1. We need to grow up from being unable to walk to be being able to stand strong (Ephesians 4:14; James 4:7; Ephesians 6:12-13; 1 John 2:14).  2. We need to grow up from being fed milk to be able to receive meat (1 Corinthians 3:1-2; Hebrews 5:12-14,6:1-3) 3. We need to grow up from being out of control to becoming self-controlled (Galatians 5:23; Titus 2:11-12; Psalm 34:12-13; James 3:5, James 1:26) Apply  1. We need to grow up from being unable to walk to be being able to stand strong. Immaturity - unable to walk: A baby can't hold themselves up. A toddler keeps falling over. Baby Christians too stumble over the same problems and temptations (Ephesians 4:14). Immature Christians are unstable and prone to falling over. A new immature Christian can be easily confused and disorientated. So we must train each Christian to know how to stand. Maturity - able to stand: It's amazing how quickly a baby learns to stand. It's equally wonderful to see new Christians rapidly becoming secure in their faith in Jesus. A mature Christian trusts in Christ not in themselves, is one who can resist the Devil and see him flee from you (James 4:7). A mature Christian has learned to stand their ground during trials and temptations (Ephesians 6:12-13). You know you are growing in your faith when you are no longer ruled by your feelings and circumstances. You no longer worry when people criticise you since they only have power over you if you accept their negativity. You don't panic when Satan sends noisy thunder and dramatic lightning your way. Why? Because You know how to find your refuge, your safe place, in the promises of God's word that He will never leave you or forsake you, and that the Lord will always hear your cry. You don't have to be old or a long-time Christian to develop an ability to stand strong in your confidence in Jesus who has conquered sin, Satan, death, and hell at the Cross (1 John 2:14).   2. We need to grow up from being fed milk to be able to receive meat Immaturity - must be fed milk: (1 Corinthians 3:1-2). Spiritual babies only want what they can easily digest. They only eat small portions of the word of God, only texts that make them feel good. Baby Christians want to be comforted not challenged, entertained rather than enlightened. They want only to receive the good promises of prosperity and good life without much of God's life and the challenges of denial, discipline, and discipleship. They don't want in depth Bible teaching (Hebrews 5:12,6:1-3). One of the key signs of an immature Christian is incomplete repentance. A Christian may keep getting into trouble because they have never truly, totally, and thoroughly repented with tears and a conviction that only Jesus can give the cleansing and forgiveness that they need. Maturity - able to nourish self on meat: (Hebrews 5:13-14). Being mature is understanding that God is righteous, and that we need to be made righteous through the blood of His son Jesus Christ and our faith in Christ alone. By ourselves we cannot live right as we should (Romans 3:10). A mature Christian, however, can discern the difference between good and evil. A mature Christian has a keen sense of what is right and wrong, not simply saying ‘well everyone has their own opinion'. A mature Christian is upright in their business dealings and in the way they treat others and is someone who seeks first Christ's kingdom and His righteousness. If you are living right, doing right, and are not living self-righteously but righteously through Christ, then you are for sure maturing in your faith.   3. We need to grow up from being out of control to becoming self-controlled Immaturity - little self-control: In real life babies are not noted for their self-control, especially regarding the bladder! They don't care. They are babies. And if they feel sick then they just go and throw up. Such behaviour, although clearly objectionable and messy, is considered permissible simply because babies do what babies do. But these are not endearing traits when babies grow older. Yet in the church, many Christians have never been potty trained. They just do what they want, say what they want to whom they want, when they want, and are not much bothered what mess they cause. There is little evidence of restraint in their lives. Lack of self-control may be seen in that they do not control their tongue, their temper, their passions, or their spending. This is nothing but immaturity. Maturity - modelling self-control: Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23). A Spirit filled mature Christian is someone who has learnt to control his passions (Titus 2:11-12). To be a grown-up Christian you can't sleep around but must control your sexual appetites. To be a grown-up Christian you must rule your money, not spend it just by impulse. To be a grown-up Christian you can't lose your temper because someone or something displeases you. You must rule your actions and reactions. And not least to be a grown-up Christian you must control your mouth (Psalm 34:12-13). An uncontrolled tongue can cause great damage (James 3:5, James 1:26).   So having considered three practical areas where we need to grow up, we need to stand strong, learn to receive meat, and live self-controlled lives. So how are you doing and what do you need to change to become a grown-up Christian? Pray asking for the Lord's forgiveness and the help of the Holy Spirit.

“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8 NLT) When you tell other people about what God has done for you, you’re sharing your testimony. Every Christian has a testimony. Some Christians have dramatic testimonies that involve being delivered from a life of drug addiction or crime or other sordid deeds. I like to hear how people came to Christ, but I don’t necessarily like to hear the gory details of their past. Other Christians have testimonies that aren’t quite as dramatic but are just as significant. Some people talk about how much they gave up for Jesus. They’ll say things like, “I gave up this and that for Jesus. I’ve made tremendous sacrifices for the Lord. I’ve done it all for Him!” But your testimony is not about what you gave up for Jesus. It’s about what He gave up for you. It’s always a good idea to stay out of the spotlight when you share your faith. Remember, Jesus is the One who has done the work. He is the One we are proclaiming. The book of Psalms contains several powerful testimonies that we can look to for inspiration. “Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me. For I cried out to him for help, praising him as I spoke. If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer. Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love from me” (Psalm 66:16–20 NLT). You’ll notice that every “I” and “me” the psalmist uses is in reference to receiving God’s grace. “I will tell everyone about your righteousness. All day long I will proclaim your saving power, though I am not skilled with words. I will praise your mighty deeds, O Sovereign Lord. I will tell everyone that you alone are just. O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do. Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me” (Psalm 71:15–18 NLT). The psalmist recognized the urgency of his calling. He didn’t say, “Lord, let me practice for a while until I get good at it, and then I’ll start sharing my testimony.” Instead, he said, “Though I am not skilled with words, I will praise your mighty deeds.” He was willing to learn on the job. He knew that God could use his words, no matter how amateurishly he spoke them, to make a difference in other people’s lives. If you’ve received Christ as your Savior and Lord, you have a story to tell. It may not be a showstopper. And you may not feel entirely comfortable sharing it. But there are people whose lives will be changed forever because of it. God will make sure of that. Reflection question: What details would your testimony include? This episode features pastors Paxton and Mike discussing evangelism fundamentals. They define evangelism as sharing the gospel with both a clear proclamation and an invitation to respond, distinguishing it from mere church outreach. They also emphasize that while not everyone has the gift of evangelism, all Christians are called to be witnesses who share their personal testimony. This discussion addresses common excuses for avoiding evangelism and highlights that 90% of people come to faith through relationships with people they know well. The conversation stresses that effective evangelism flows naturally from a vibrant relationship with Christ, where believers are comfortable identifying as Christians first and allow their faith to emerge organically in everyday conversations. Engage & Equip is a resource designed to help form substantive disciples for the local church.Find more episodes at highpointchurch.org/podcastMusic: HOME—We're Finally Landing, Nosebleed, If I'm Wrong (https://midwestcollective.bandcamp.com/album/before-the-night)

Touching Lives with Dr. James Merritt

I'm sure you know the running joke about fishermen exaggerating the size of their catch. But in 1959, Alfred Dean didn't need to exaggerate when he caught a 2,664-pound great white shark in Australia, the largest fish ever caught in history. The Bible tells us about an even more unbelievable story, but in reverse—the story of a fish that caught a man. Jonah's encounter with the great fish would make worldwide news today, but here's what might surprise you: The fish story isn't really the point. The book of Jonah is actually the missionary book of the Old Testament, revealing that God has a missionary heart and every Christian is called to be on mission. I like how John Stott said, “We profess to believe in God? He's a missionary God. We're committed to Christ? He's a missionary Christ.” The truth that applies to us today is simple: We all are called. Every Christian has a mission to perform, a message to proclaim, a ministry to promote, and a Master to praise.

Peace Is the Presence of Christ: A Mission for Every Christian This Homily begins with a personal story: . . . . . . the speaker's first funeral as a newly ordained priest, which was for an only daughter lost in a tragic accident. The grieving family's heartfelt request was for peace . . . peace for their daughter and peace for themselves. This sets the stage for a broader meditation on the Gospel reading where Jesus sends out 72 disciples, symbolizing that all Christians are missionaries, not just clergy. The Homily emphasizes that Christianity involves active participation: bringing Christ to others in daily life . . . not necessarily across seas, but to workplaces, schools, and communities. The idea of being “sent” is built into the structure of the Mass itself. Jesus sends his disciples in pairs to remind us that faith thrives in community and accountability, not in isolation. Saints like Ignatius of Loyola embodied this communal faith. Jesus' instructions . . . travel light, greet no one . . . underscore dependence on God rather than worldly comforts. An anecdote about young soccer players illustrates how self-sufficiency can lead people to neglect God, but life's inevitable struggles reveal our need for Him. Finally, the Homily returns to the theme of peace . . . “Peace be to this house” . . . highlighting that peace is not the absence of hardship but the presence of Christ. When we bring Christ to others, we bring peace and proclaim that the kingdom of God is at hand. The ultimate Christian mission is to bring the presence of Christ . . . true peace . . . to the world.
