Paul began his letter to the Romans in a rare way, calling himself a slave (doulos) of Christ. He does this only two other times in his letters (Phil 1:1 and Titus 1:1). Doulos (slave) means someone who belongs to another, without any ownership rights of their own. We American Christians love our freedom, and may bristle at the idea that we are slaves. Yet, doulos is used with the highest dignity in the NT – namely, of believers who willingly live under Christ's authority as His devoted followers. In Romans 6:15-19, Paul urges us to embrace our slavery to God through the righteousness found in Christ. Freedom isn't about having no constraints, it's about having the right constraints, the ones that actually free us. Slavery to sin is a cruel master, but slavery to God leads to true freedom. For Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:34-36).Take-Home Message: True freedom is found in presenting yourself to God.The freedom of presenting yourself to God (15-16).We are all slaves. We are slaves of the one whom we obey.Slavery to sin leads to death.Slavery to God leads to life. The freedom of presenting your heart to God (17-18).The freedom of presenting your members to God (19).Finding Freedom:GatherStudyPrayPraise
Freedom isn't found in what you've accomplished, who you know, or how well you've managed your life — it's found in Christ alone. In this message, Pastor Casey exposes four "selves" that keep us from experiencing the abundant life Jesus paid for: self-worth, self-sufficiency, self-esteem, and self-preservation. If you're tired of living a fraction of the life God intended, this message will challenge you to die to self and step into your real identity in Christ.
"Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin." John 8:34
Join us this week as we kick off our summer sermon series, continuing from the last two summers with part three in our look at The Gospel of John. Today we look at false belief and true freedom as expressed in John chapter 8 verses 30-36.

The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
Jon Fogel is a parenting expert, pastor, published author, and PhD candidate who runs Whole Parent and Whole Parent Academy, a resource built around the psychology of parenting and discipline. He is the author of the bestselling book Punishment Free Parenting and a brand new children's book, Set My Feelings Free, which sold out nationwide before its second printing. He is a husband, father of four kids ranging from 18 months to nine years old, and somehow found time to install a toilet while his wife was in labor. Jon has been a guest on The Dad Edge podcast twice before, and every single time he shows up, he leaves the room differently than he found it. This episode is a live Q&A inside the Alliance, and the questions the guys brought were real. Getting a spouse on the same page. The pendulum swing between authoritarian and checked-out. A five-year-old who looks you dead in the eye before he does the wrong thing on purpose. And the hard one: what happens when your son won't respond to you the way he responds to his mom. Jon's framework is grounded in brain science and developmental psychology, and the thing that keeps hitting you as you listen is how much of what we were taught about discipline actually works against us. The reason kids shut down when we raise our voices is the same reason our partners shut down when we raise our voices. The reason kids push boundaries is not defiance. It's development. The reason your son runs to mom and not to you is not a reflection of your worth as a father. It's evolution. If you're a dad who's been doing the work but still feels like something is off in how your kids or your partner respond to you, this episode is going to give you clarity in places you didn't expect to find it. Timeline Summary [1:01] Host introduces Jon Fogel for his third appearance, covering his role as a parenting expert, author, PhD candidate, and founder of Whole Parent Academy [2:05] Jon describes his book Punishment Free Parenting, its bestseller status, and explains that 99% of the book is about what to do instead of punishing [3:42] Jon's newest children's book Set My Feelings Free is sold out nationwide, with a second printing arriving May 20th [4:02] First question from Rich: how to get a spouse on the same page when parenting backgrounds and styles are very different [5:29] Jon explains why you should never try to correct a partner's parenting in the moment, and why the same brain science that applies to kids applies to adults [8:11] Jon introduces the H.E.A.R. framework from Harvard for conflict resolution: Hedge, Emphasize agreement, Acknowledge perspective, Reframe to the positive [10:55] Jon walks through each step of H.E.A.R. practically, showing how removing defensiveness creates space for the other person to move without feeling wrong [14:07] Jon adds a bonus tactic: developing a safe word with your partner as a mutual tap-out when someone is getting too heated to parent effectively [17:56] Second question from Chris: the pendulum swing between strict and disengaged, and why so many parents default to one or the other [19:16] Jon reframes the boundary concept using the backyard fence metaphor: boundaries are not restrictions, they are the only structure that gives a child real freedom [27:17] Third question: a five-year-old who deliberately pushes boundaries and throws food. Jon explains the difference between punishments, natural consequences, and logical consequences [30:50] Jon explains that boundary-pushing at five is a developmental need, not defiance, and offers a practical redirection strategy using a popcorn bowl at dinner [35:15] Anonymous question: son responds to mom and shuts down with dad. Jon addresses attachment hierarchy, enmeshment concerns, and why parents should largely stop parenting together [40:10] Jon explains the science of attachment hierarchy and how kids are hardwired to default to one parent under threat. He clarifies that being second in the hierarchy does not mean you are failing [44:46] Jon shares resources: Punishment Free Parenting, the children's book Set My Feelings Free, The Whole Parent Podcast, and an in-person event in Chicago on May 21st Five Key Takeaways The worst time to correct your partner's parenting is in the moment it's happening. The same science that tells us not to discipline a dysregulated child applies directly to adults. Wait for calm, get curious about the trigger, and then use the H.E.A.R. framework to address it without creating more defensiveness than you started with. Boundaries are not restrictions. They are the structure that gives your child real freedom. A kid without clear boundaries does not feel free. They feel unsafe. The backyard fence metaphor Jon uses is worth sitting with: your job is to build the fence in the right place, not to police what happens inside it. A five-year-old who looks you in the eye before doing something he knows you don't want is not being defiant. He is developing. At that age, differentiation is a biological need, and the act of doing something dad doesn't want is how he practices becoming his own person. Understanding that changes how you respond. If your son responds better to his mom than to you, that is not an indictment of who you are as a father. Attachment hierarchy is hardwired and evolutionary. The solution is not to compete with mom in the room. It is to build a relationship with your son when she is not there. Kids who do not have their need for autonomy met will meet that need in ways you will not like. Whether it is food at the dinner table, video games at 13, or behavior that seems to come out of nowhere, the question worth asking is: where else in his day does he get to make his own choices? Links & Resources Punishment Free Parenting by Jon Fogel — https://a.co/d/0hdOkJZl Set My Feelings Free (children's book) — second printing available May 20th In-person Chicago event with Jon Fogel and Eli Harwood — May 21st, downtown Chicago How to Deal With Your Shirt So Your Kids Don't Have to by Eli Harwood The Alliance — http://thedadedge.com/soulmates The Men's Forge — http://themensforge.com/ Shownotes: http://thedadedge.com/1485 Closing The question about attachment hierarchy near the end of this one is going to stay with me for a while. The image of your kid running toward one parent without thinking, faster than conscious thought, because their brain is trying to survive a threat — and knowing that which parent they run to has nothing to do with how hard you've worked or how much you love them — that's both humbling and freeing at the same time. Jon said it plainly: being in second place means you're in first place when the other person isn't there. Do the work. Show up. Take the alone time with your kids and build what only you can build with them. Go out and live legendary.

Ever felt like you're following all the right steps but still missing something deeper? Many people walk through church doors confident in their faith yet quietly shackled to old habits, unhealed pain, or a fear of never “arriving.” Pastor Kevin describes this as the difference between getting wet and actually going swimming. Between being close to truth but not fully saturated by it.Pastor Kevin unpacks why so many well-meaning people settle for surface-level Christianity, never realizing how much God longs to set them free. He reminds us that real change, doesn't come from louder declarations or checklist spirituality, but from a daily, honest encounter with Jesus and his word.Whether you're brand new or wrestling with old doubts, you're invited to belong, to try again, and to ask, “Do I really want to be free?” There's space for your questions here, and a next step that's actually doable. Are you tired of feeling trapped by an oppressive system that demands perfection? In this powerful Memorial Day weekend message from West University Baptist Church, Dr. Roger Patterson dives into Galatians 5:16–26 to uncover the true meaning of Christian liberty. Many believers find themselves trapped on opposite ends of the spectrum: legalism (living by strict rules and performance) or license (using freedom to indulge the flesh). Dr. Patterson reveals that both paths lead to the exact same place—spiritual bondage. Discover how walking by the Spirit, being led by the Spirit, and keeping in step with the Holy Spirit provides the supernatural willpower you need to overcome your sin nature. Learn how a daily partnership with God transforms your heart, crucifies the flesh, and naturally produces the 9 essential fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If you are ready to stop frantically striving and start abiding in Christ, this sermon will give you a practical, one-minute daily prayer to reshape your life.
By Mario Seiglie - God's Feasts proclaim freedom to the world from all evils and oppression. Each feast has a focus on a particular true freedom that God will bring to the world in His kingdom. What if the chains you've worked so hard to escape are still wrapped around your heart? The Israelites discovered their greatest enemy wasn't Pharaoh, but the idol-making factory within—turning God's gifts into false gods when fear struck. Pastor Jason reveals how we become like what we worship, sharing his own struggle with making work an idol that demanded sacrifice of family time. Discover how naming your hidden idols, asking forgiveness, and replacing them with devotion to Jesus leads to the true freedom your soul craves.

Have you ever felt like you should be more healed, more clear, more certain… and yet you're not? If you've been overthinking, holding on, or trying to force your way into peace… this conversation will bring you back to the wisdom of your heart. And give you a big ol' dose of counter intuitive power moves. In this episode, I sit down with my dear friend Danielle LaPorte to explore what it really means to live from the heart, not as a concept, but as a daily, embodied practice. This conversation challenged me in the best way, especially around how we relate to our emotions, our patterns, and even the parts of ourselves we try to push away. Danielle LaPorte is a heart-centered leader, author, and philanthropist whose work bridges emotional intelligence, spirituality, and practical devotion. She is the author of multiple bestselling books, and she joins me to share insights from her latest "sure to be bestseller", Bless & Release. We unpack a powerful reframe on healing, one that isn't about fixing yourself, but about learning how to work with your energy and meet your emotions with compassion and presence. We talk about acceptance and why it doesn't mean condoning, how resistance keeps you stuck, and what begins to shift when you stop fighting reality. We also dive into joy, trust, confusion, the pressure to know what's next, and how softening into uncertainty can crack open a different kind of clarity. Key Moments You'll Love ✨ :

In today's episode, Jordan sits down with Master Shi Heng Yi for a deeply reflective conversation about childhood wounds, the burden of expectations, and the journey toward true inner freedom. Master Shi Heng Yi opens up about his upbringing and early martial arts education, where he constantly faced the pressure of "never being enough." He explains how this relentless drive shaped him into a high achiever and a self-reliant "lone wolf" who suppressed his emotions, but ultimately led him to realize that external success does not equate to a content and happy life. The conversation ventures into profound philosophical territory as Master Shi Heng Yi discusses the illusion of identity and the ego. He shares his conscious decision to release his celebrated "Shaolin Master" persona, transitioning from the exhausting pursuit of being "someone" to finding profound peace in being "no one." Using the powerful analogy of the mind as a radio antenna getting hooked on different thought frequencies, he explains the nature of karma, emotional attachments, and the importance of untangling our true selves from our fleeting thoughts to remain entirely in the present moment. Finally, Master Shi Heng Yi clarifies the true essence of the Shaolin tradition, emphasizing that its core is not found merely in physical movement, but in the Zen teachings of mastering the mind to end human suffering. He connects these deep spiritual insights to his new role as a father, sharing his commitment to breaking generational cycles of conditional love and trauma. This episode offers a transformative perspective on letting go of ownership, releasing the need to control life's path, and allowing the natural flow of existence to guide the way. Send us fan responses! Ever feel like the system is built to keep you compliant and broke? We go straight at the root: status, contracts, and how to build a private life the state doesn't control. From the way schools train obedience to the way courts extract value, we unpack how your identity is treated like a business—and how to take the driver's seat with trusts, DBAs, and clear boundaries that protect your assets and time.We map a practical blueprint. Start by formalizing your family trust and placing a holding company in a protective state like Nevada or Wyoming. Use DBAs for children's names, separate roles to avoid commingling, and learn the key signals that shift jurisdiction—like reserving rights and declining to contract in court. Then layer on finance: fund the trust, leverage cash value life insurance for lines of credit, and consider offshore jurisdictions such as Nevis or the Cook Islands for advanced asset protection. This isn't about hiding; it's about lawful structure and tax avoidance the way corporations have done for decades.Along the way, we explore identity, language, and power. Tribal models in Africa, private communities, and even micronations in Nevada highlight how groups claim autonomy with bylaws, culture, and clear leadership. We connect that to modern tools—crypto, mobile money, and private IDs for specific travel contexts—to move fluidly across borders and systems. And we ground it all in mindset: truth as an energy saver, intuition as a compass, and daily rituals that turn intent into action. Freedom is a paperwork skill and a discipline. Joel unpacks "internal tyranny," money and abundance as extensions of self-concept, and the hero's journey of entering the "cave you fear to enter" to live your authentic life. Highlights: "The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." "All masters require willing slaves." "Self-esteem is the reputation you've acquired with yourself." From the Roadside to the Roadway: True Freedom of Life and Spirit This Lenten retreat centers on Jesus as the Light who seeks us out . . . . . . and invites us into deeper conversion. Using the story of the healing of the blind beggar, the conference emphasizes that the spiritual life is not primarily about our search for God, but about God's relentless search for us. From the beginning of salvation history, God takes the initiative, calling humanity into relationship and asking for a response of faith. Lent, therefore, is a time of intentional discipline . . . prayer, fasting, and sacrifice . . . not as punishment, but to rediscover what truly matters and to remove whatever “blinds” us spiritually. Sin is described as a kind of blindness that prevents us from seeing reality, God's presence, and the path to fullness of life. Seeing the Face of Christ: Perseverance, Faith, and the Light of Conversion Like the blind man who cries out despite opposition, believers must persevere even when enthusiasm fades or when others discourage their commitment. Following Christ always involves resistance and ultimately leads to the Cross; yet the Cross is not the end but the path to salvation. Jesus' question, “What do you want me to do for you?”, becomes the central personal challenge of Lent. Each person must answer honestly, ask for spiritual sight, and choose to follow Christ with faith. When one truly “sees” the face of Christ, one cannot help but follow Him. The candle-lighting and procession to the crucifix symbolize this journey: moving from darkness to light, from blindness to faith, and from intention to committed discipleship. For listeners to this conference, place a cross in your hand, and meditate on your response to Jesus' question, “What do you want me to do for you?”. As you gaze upon His face commit your Lenten Season to Following Him. Listen to this second devotional Lenten Retreat Conference and let it transform your heart. In this powerful conversation, host Brian Freise sits down with Laura Duncan to explore why discipline and productivity alone can't deliver lasting freedom, and why learning to be still might be the most radical and healing thing we can do.Drawing from Andrew Huberman's podcast on brain science, Cal Newport's Deep Work, and timeless biblical wisdom (Psalm 46:10, John 8), they unpack:Why constant stimulation (phones, email, multitasking) blocks memory consolidation, learning, and real restHow boredom is often a disguised cry for connection, especially connection with ourselvesWhy forced abstinence (e.g. quitting social media cold turkey) rarely creates freedom, true freedom comes from connection, not just behavior changeThe neuroscience behind “gap time” and how brief moments of stillness actually accelerate neuroplasticityHow Jesus modeled living beyond the mundane by regularly withdrawing into stillness and presenceA dead-simple daily practice: the 5-minute attunement exercise → 2–3 minutes of silence → Gently notice body sensations, thoughts, and emotions (no fixing) → Anchor with one true-self word or feelingWhether you're overwhelmed by busyness, struggling with insomnia despite discipline, or just feel disconnected even when you're “doing all the right things,” this episode offers both the why (science + scripture) and the how (a practical starting point).

Today, we’re in Mark chapter 2, and I've titled it “The Spirit Brings Freedom,” because this chapter provides a front-row seat to what Jesus is like—and what He prioritizes. Mark moves fast, and chapter 2 is no exception. We watch Jesus forgive sins, heal a paralyzed man, call a tax collector to follow Him, and then collide head-on with religious leaders who are more focused on rules than on restoration. What I love about this chapter is how clearly it answers the question: Who is Jesus for? He is for the desperate, the hurting, the overlooked, and the people who know they need help. And over and over again, Jesus keeps pulling the conversation back to what matters most—the heart, mercy, freedom, and the higher law of love. So by the end of this episode, I want you to ask: Does my life actually look freer because I’m following Jesus? And what do I need Him to free me from right now? What We Cover: See the big structure of Mark 2 and how it’s “bookended” by Jesus’ authority. Discover three key confrontations that reveal what Jesus prioritizes—and why not everyone is happy about it. Understand why Jesus forgives before He heals (and what that says about the spiritual root beneath the physical need). Learn why Jesus eats with “sinners” and what that teaches about grace, identity, and who belongs near Him. Make sense of the “new wine / new wineskins” metaphor as a picture of Jesus bringing something truly new that won’t fit into old structures. Reframe Sabbath as mercy and trust, not legalism and burden. Walk away with a personal gut-check: Is my faith more about checking boxes—or about love and freedom? Does following Jesus make me more compassionate, more forgiving, more secure? What do I need to be freed from right now? It's very fashionable to talk about boundaries, especially in the context of relationships or expectations of others. One could argue that boundaries are useful, but once they become a cage, they become a problem. In this episode, Thom unpacks the difference between living inside sharp routines and cultivating real unboundedness, the kind that actually refreshes the nervous system and expands your capacity to meet the need of the time.Thom also explains why “control” is a false strategy in relationships, what it really means to meet another person's conscious receptivity, and how empathy becomes a practical tool for clearer expectations, cleaner communication, and less suffering.Episode Highlights[00:45] The Problem With Sharp Boundaries [04:19] Why Classic Approaches To Freedom Fail [07:34] The Shocking Truth About Repetitive Thinking [10:56] How To Break Free From Boundaries [15:10] Making Unboundedness A Daily Routine [19:17] The Goal Is Not Permanent Meditation [20:11] Q - How do we show up differently in relationships as we expand consciousness? Most of us are trapped in an invisible prison of our own conditioning. We've spent decades absorbing narratives about who we should be, what we should achieve, and how we should prove our worth. These stories run so deep we don't even realise they're there anymore. But when we're willing to look honestly at our reactions, fears, and patterns within relationships, we can finally see where we're not free. This applies to romantic partnerships especially, but also to our connections with colleagues… even AI.Without addressing these patterns, we become masters of our limitations. We might achieve material success, make money, tick all the boxes, but we'll still feel like we're hitting our head against a wall. This discussion with expert coach Peter Crone offers a moment of honest reflection which can help you reveal the invisible container you've been living within.Follow @petercrone on InstagramLearn more about Peter's Freedom membershipLearn more about Peter's MastermindMentioned in this episode:The Core Method™ The trademarked, unique and universal coaching framework for deep transformationHealing Your Relationship with the Masculine A 4-week immersive program for women
What if the thing you're most ashamed of is exactly where Jesus wants to meet you? This message flips everything you thought about Jesus on its head. He's not floating above your mess—He's sitting right in it. In John 4, we see Jesus intentionally walk into a place everyone else avoided, to meet a woman everyone else rejected. She wasn't clean, perfect, or put together. She was tired, ashamed, hiding. And Jesus met her there. Maybe you think you're too far gone. Too broken. This story proves you're exactly who He's looking for. What starts as a casual conversation by a well turns into a soul-deep rescue. Jesus doesn't avoid her past—He names it, not to shame her, but to free her. Her shame becomes her story. Her story becomes a testimony. And her testimony leads an entire town to believe. Jesus does the same for us. He doesn't need the version of you you're trying to fake—He wants the real you. The tired you. The hurting you. The hiding you. He knows everything you've ever done, and He still wants you.
