The Maumee Area of Concern in Northwest Ohio has been the site of industrial and municipal development for almost two centuries. Environmental contamination has run rampant, so the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District recently teamed up to remove over 50,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment from Otter Creek, a small creek that empties into South Maumee Bay. Meaghan Kern, E.P.A. Region 5 project manager, and Ashley Binion-Zuccaro, USACE Buffalo project manager, are this episode's guests. In recent years, high water levels have plagued the Lake Ontario shoreline. In 2019, the Village of Fair Haven, NY and Little Sodus Bay Harbor suffered damage to a critical piece of maritime infrastructure. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District was called to action to repair the structure, and Lex Barker, USACE Buffalo project manager, is here to explain what happened and future work at the site. Our Civil Works mission provides a key foundational component of the nation's public infrastructure and now is a critical time for investing in it. Erosion is a natural process but it's also putting shoreline communities in danger along the Great Lakes. According to Army doctrine, leadership is “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.” If there's anyone who exemplifies leadership, it's Episode 2 guest Lieutenant Colonel Jason Toth. Toth is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District Commander, and prior to this assignment he served as the Deputy District Commander of USACE St. Paul District and traveled the world as an Army engineer officer. The Building Strong Buffalo Podcast premieres! This is the show to get to know the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District, our people, and our stories. Episode 1 centers on the District's operations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As worldwide novel coronavirus infections soar past 2 million and lives are lost, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been tasked by FEMA to provide planning and engineering support to address medical facility shortages in the U.S. The Buffalo District plays a key role for this mission along the Great Lakes, supporting Districts with facility assessments across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. At the same time, the Buffalo District has not slowed down getting projects completed across the lower 38,000 square miles of watershed along lakes Erie and Ontario. To learn more, we'll hear from key players in Buffalo including the District Engineer Dave Romano, and Chief of Special Projects Branch Bill Kovalevski.
