Send us a textThe journey to becoming a parent is transformative, with every expecting family deserving compassionate, continuous support through pregnancy, birth and beyond. This intimate conversation with Gail Tupin, a certified birth and postpartum doula, unveils how professional birth support dramatically improves outcomes and experiences for new families. When a doula is present at birth, intervention rates including C-sections measurably decrease – not because doulas provide medical care, but because they create a crucial buffer in the birthing environment. As Gail explains, doulas offer that essential "pause moment" between medical recommendations and parental decisions, allowing families to make choices from a place of confidence rather than fear. Unlike your medical team or even your closest loved ones, doulas bring an unbiased perspective and extensive experience with birth, creating space for parents to fully process their options. The misconception that doulas only support unmedicated births prevents many families from accessing this valuable resource. Contrary to popular belief, doulas support all birth plans – including epidurals and cesarean births – by adapting their role to each family's unique needs and preferences. The support continues into the critical fourth trimester, where postpartum doulas help new mothers process their birth experiences while creating what Gail beautifully describes as a "sanctuary space" for recovery.Though insurance coverage remains limited, some Medicaid programs now include doula services, and creative solutions like adding doula support to baby registries can make this care more accessible. Whether you're expecting your first baby or adding to your family, connecting with a doula whose personality and approach resonate with you could transform your birth experience. Reach out to Gail for a free consultation if you're in the Metro Detroit area, and discover how professional birth support might be the missing piece in your journey to parenthood.Check out Gail's website: www.rooted-doula.com or follow her on IG & FB for helpful birth and postpartum content @rooted_doulaYou can also find Gail providing pregnant and new mom support at Livingston County's premiere holisticSupport the showEnjoying the show? Here's the 67th, and the final episode for 2023, on Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Livingston County progressive activist Kasey Helton returns to the podcast this week as we discuss how "dirt road" Democrats are trying to move the political needle towards the progressive side in rural Michigan. And we've seen some of that hard work pay-off with Democrats winning some key races in Livingston County, which has been a reliable red county for Republicans. We also discuss how out of touch Livingston County Republicans are with the people on issues like abortion, and how Democrats are trying to save family farms with the recently passed Clean Energy and Climate Action bill package. Plus, Kasey talks with me about a podcast she hosts with Jace Arledge and Ella Nikitin, called "The Stir Podcast."  Listen and subscribe on their website: https://thestirpod.transistor.fm/ My opening segment deals with Michigan Democrats passing bills repealing Republican laws forcing women to purchase "rape insurance." It's just another example of how Democrats are helping women, and value women's economic and medical freedoms. In fact, this year Michigan Democrats are working to move the Overton Window by going on the offense, and passing common sense progressive bills that will help hard-working Michiganders. And my "Last Call" continues to talk about how allowing family farmers to join in the clean energy future in Michigan is a freedom issue, and how it's puzzling Republicans voted against the right of farmers to allow wind turbines and solar farms in their fields. What happened to property rights, Republicans? Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com –Pat

It's the 56th episode of Michigan's Premier Progressive Podcast! I've been looking forward to this episode because I've wanted to talk with Michigan Advance reporter Jon King for quite awhile. Jon's been busy covering MAGA right wing Millennial presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy speech at the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference, Mike Rogers' steep chances at winning the Republican nomination for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat next year, and speaking with parents fighting against the so-called “parental rights” movement. Jon's also got experience at working in right wing terrestrial radio for years in Livingston County, until he was pushed-out because the snowflake right wing audience and advertisers didn't like the way John reported on facts. My opening monologue talks about how legislative Michigan Democrats are pushing ahead on passing their clean and affordable energy bills, which will help lead our state in the future for energy generation and conservation, and also on combating climate change. These bills won't just help create a cleaner environment and more reliable energy for the people, but it'll also help create thousands of jobs, many of them union jobs. And speaking of unions, I highlight President Biden's appearance at the UAW picket lines in Wayne, MI, and how that contrasted with Trump's anti-union rally this week in Macomb County. Finally, in my Last Call, I discuss how right wing Republicans celebrated the news that Ford was pausing its EV car battery plant in Marshall. I posted a tweet asking why these Republicans want EV battery plants being built elsewhere in other states, leaving our workers out to dry. I received many, many right wing responses, and I share some of them with you. Please, give a good rating wherever you get this podcast. Take the battle to them! leftoflansing.com leftoflansing@gmail.com

For Media Business Episode 54: Tony Conley welcomes Coach Carl Thomas, a Lansing, Michigan native, with ties all over the state, Thomas is excited to come home. “Not only was the opportunity to be a head coach extremely attractive to me, but to be able to come back home, be closer to my family, all while pursuing this goal and building this program. I could not pass this up once I was given the chance to take it.” Last August Cleary University Senior Vice President of Campus Operations and Athletic Director Heather Bateman announced that Carl Thomas will be the first head coach of the recently announced Cougar men's basketball program. “We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Carl Thomas into the Cleary University family as our first head men's basketball coach. Carl brings a plethora of coaching experience, including at the (NCAA) Division 1 level. Thomas' enthusiasm, experience, and recruiting ties make him a perfect fit for our University and Athletic department.” Thomas has spent the past six seasons on NCAA Division 1 Duquesne University's coaching staff with Coach Keith Dambrot as the assistant to the head coach. Prior to his time at Duquesne, Thomas was the head coach for NJCAA Jackson College (4 seasons), and was an assistant at NJCAA Owens Community College (2 seasons). Thomas has also spent time as an assistant at his alma mater, NCAA Division 1 Eastern Michigan University from 2005-2011 (6 seasons), and at NCAA Division 1 Maryland Eastern Shore (1 season). “I'd like to thank Dr. (Alan) Drimmer and Heather (Bateman) for this opportunity,” said Thomas. “To be trusted as the first head coach in the program's history is a tremendous honor. I look forward to building this program, competing at the highest level in the WHAC, in the nation, and ensuring we do everything in our power to represent the Howell and Livingston County communities.” As a player, Thomas was a prep standout at Lansing Everett High School, After high school, Thomas, and his twin brother Charles, both attended Eastern Michigan University, After leaving Ypsilanti, Thomas played in both the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1991-1999. He played for Fort Wayne and Grand Rapids of the CBA, being called up to the NBA five separate times over his career. He would play a total of 63 games in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings (1991-92), Cleveland Cavaliers (1996-98), Golden State Warriors (1997-98), and Orlando Magic (1997-98). Thomas would also play professionally overseas in France, Sweden, Greece, and Italy from 2000-2003. Carl and Charles Thomas are one of nine sets of twins who have both played in the NBA. Cleary announced the addition of men's and women's basketball to the athletic department on July 25, and both men's and women's programs will begin competition during the 2023-24 season. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCqNX… » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/ Thank you to Benjamin Robinson and Motor City Skyline's music

The creature is described as a seven-foot tall, blue-eyed, or amber-eyed bipedal canine-like animal with the torso of a man and a fearsome howl that sounds like a human scream. According to legends, the Michigan Dogman appears in a ten-year cycle that falls on years ending in 7. Sightings have been reported in several locations throughout Michigan, primarily in the northwestern quadrant of the Lower Peninsula. In 1987, the legend of the Michigan Dogman gained popularity when disc jockey Steve Cook at WTCM-FM recorded a song about the creature and its reported sightings. History This creature was unknown to most of the modern world until very late in the twentieth century. It is said to have been stalking the area around the Manistee River since the days when the Odawa tribes lived there. Authentic sources for sightings made prior to 1987, however, have never been documented beyond Steve Cook's song, discussed below. The first alleged encounter of the Michigan Dogman occurred in 1887 in Wexford County, when two lumberjacks saw a creature that they described as having a man's body and a dog's head. In 1937 in Paris, Michigan, Robert Fortney was attacked by five wild dogs and said that one of the five walked on two legs. Reports of similar creatures also came from Allegan County in the 1950s, and in Manistee and Cross Village in 1967. Linda S. Godfrey, in her book The Beast of Bray Road, compares the Manistee sightings to a similar creature sighted in Wisconsin known as the Beast of Bray Road. Hell, Michigan Hell is an unincorporated community in Livingston County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As an unincorporated community, Hell has no defined boundaries or population statistics of its own. Located within Putnam Township, the community is centered along Patterson Lake Road about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Ann Arbor and three miles (4.8 km) southwest of Pinckney. The community is served by the Pinckney post office with the 48169 ZIP Code. History Hell developed around a sawmill, gristmill, distillery and tavern. All four were operated by George Reeves, who moved to the area in the 1830s from the Catskill Mountains in New York. He purchased a sawmill on what is now known as Hell Creek in 1841. In addition to the sawmill, Reeves purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land surrounding the mill. Reeves then built a gristmill on Hell Creek which was powered by water that was impounded by a small dam across the creek. Farmers in the area were quite successful in growing wheat and had an abundance of grain. Reeves opened a distillery to process the excess grain into whiskey. Reeves also opened a general store/tavern on his property. The tavern and distillery soon became a thriving business for Reeves. He built a ballroom on the second floor of the establishment and a sulky racetrack around his millpond. Reeves also sold his alcohol to nearby roadhouses and stores for as little as ten cents a gallon. His operation came under the scrutiny of the U.S. government in the years after the American Civil War. When tax collectors came to Hell to assess his operation, Reeves and his customers conspired to hide the whiskey by filling barrels and sinking them to the bottom of the millpond. When the government agents left the area, the barrels were hauled to the surface with ropes. As Reeves aged, he slowed his business ventures, closing the distillery and witnessing the burning of the gristmill. He died in 1877. Reeves' family sold the land to a group of investors from Detroit in 1924. The investors increased the size of the millpond by raising the level of the dam, creating what is now Hiland Lake. The area soon became a summer resort area, attracting visitors for swimming and fishing. Henry Ford considered building some manufacturing facilities in the area but decided against it.

A new episode of the Left Of Lansing Podcast is posted. This week, progressive activist Kasey Helton joins me to talk about life as a progressive in ruby red Republican Livingston County. We talk about Livingston County politics, why it's been difficult for progressives to make a dent there, but how progressives are beginning to find ways to post some victories there. She also shares some ideas and strategies that progressives can take to make change in Michigan's red counties.  Please, follow her on Twitter! twitter.com/KaseyHelton05 My opening monologue deals with my two week battle with COVID, which is why I missed a podcast last week! Sitting around in bed as I deal with COVID for the first time since the pandemic broke, I recalled how the right wing did everything in its po to ensure the virus killed and sickened as many Americans as possible because "cruelty is the point." My "Last Call" deals with how a simple school millage became an ideological battle in Livingston County's Heartland Township. The county Republican Party fought against the millage because they objected over "woke" books. But this should serve as an illustration for all progressives on the importance of local politics because the right wing is so far out-maneuvering the left on city, county, and school boards.  Enjoy!

Tonight's guest, Allan, has lived in Livingston County, Michigan all of his life. He lives in a beautiful area, that has a lot to offer someone, like Allan, who's addicted to spending as much time, as possible, in the woods. That area has a dark secret, though. You see, 1 day, when he was 14, he was hunting on his grandfather's 70-acre property when he had his 1st Dogman encounter. Luckily, he was able to shake that encounter off, before long, and before long he was back to spending time in the woods. About a month ago, however, he had an encounter with a massive Dogman that wasn't so easy shake off. He had that encounter while he was up in a tree stand, hunting coyotes. The floor of the stand was 10 feet off the forest floor. The day this encounter happened, nothing out of the ordinary had happened. It wasn't any different than the countless times he'd sat in that stand, while hunting. That is, nothing out of the ordinary happened, that day, until he felt and heard something sniffing his lower leg. When he turned his head and looked down to see what it was, he saw that it was a gigantic Dogman!Premium memberships are now available!
