Welcome, South Coast newcomer and the owner-operator of an already local institution, Fairhaven Frets, Bryon Knight. One of our newest friends, supporters, and collaborators. He began his musical career at age 11 and wanted to know more about how instruments were built. Bryon began “hanging around” a shop where a master fiddle maker was producing hand-made violins, violas, cellos, and a few guitars. He "swept the sawdust just to be near the old luthier and glean technical tidbits that would prove to be valuable later in my life." He also began playing in bands and eventually started touring regionally. Did we mention that Byron was from Arkansas and that he also had a 25-year career in television production, producing programs for ESPN, Fox Sports, The Discovery Channel, and The Outdoor Channel? He moved on to join the largest music retailer in the world, Thomann/Sweetwater Sound. After the devastating loss of a friend, he was encouraged by Little Rock Frets, which, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, was the largest string instrument repair shop in the state. His wife, Frances, is a New England Native and wanted to return "Home," and so they did and came to Fairhaven, Massachusetts, where Fairhaven Frets came into existence in 2019. Byron Knight spoke with The Artists Index's cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, this past April, about how he "always played music and worked on instruments - mostly for the pure love of the art". This episode was recorded at our recording studio at Spectrum Marketing Group at Howland Place in New Bedford.   Bryon Knight Fairhaven Frets 105 Sconticut Neck Road Fairhaven MA 02719 508-433-3738   Email | Website | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | Other   Please consider donating whatever you can to help and assure us in our mission to continue documenting the legacies of South Coast Artists. Repentance has two parts: first, contrition—sorrow for sin—and second, faith in the Gospel. The Lord delivers His Law as a thunderbolt and hammer, striking the heart and stirring it toward newness of life. True contrition is not merely sorrow for sin but the realization that we deserve death because of it. In faith, we repent, knowing that there is One who will save us from this body of death. The goal of repentance is always forgiveness and hope in Christ. God calls us to repentance, daring us to believe that He will give exactly what He promises: forgiveness, life, and salvation in Christ. Rev. David Buchs, pastor at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fairhaven, MN, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study repentance in the Smalcald. Find your copy of the Book of Concord - Concordia Reader's Edition at cph.org or read online at bookofconcord.org. Study the Lutheran Confession of Faith found in the Book of Concord with lively discussions led by host Rev. Brady Finnern, President of the LCMS Minnesota North District, and guest LCMS pastors. Join us as these Christ-confessing Concordians read through and discuss our Lutheran doctrine in the Book of Concord in order to gain a deeper understanding of our Lutheran faith and practical application for our vocations. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Laury A Egan, author of the book Fair Haven. Laury is the author of fourteen books of fiction: Jack & I; The Black Leopard's Kiss & The Writer Remembers; The Psychologist's Shadow; The Firefly; Once, Upon an Island; Wave in D Minor; Doublecrossed; Turnabout; The Swimmer; The Ungodly Hour; A Bittersweet Tale; Fabulous! An Opera Buffa; The Outcast Oracle; and Jenny Kidd, with two titles forthcoming in 2025: Fair Haven and a new story/play collection, Contrary. Her stories have been collected in Fog and Other Stories, and her short fiction and poems have appeared in 85 literary journals and in multiple anthologies. Two full-length poetry volumes, Snow, Shadow, a Stranger and Beneath the Lion's Paw, were issued in limited edition, as were two chapbooks, Presence & Absence and The Sea & Beyond. Laury is also a fine arts photographer, a former book designer, and a reviewer for The New York Journal of Books. She lives on the northern coast of New Jersey.   In my book review, I stated Fair Haven by Laury A Egan is a murder mystery set in the small town of Fair Haven. The opening scene is a dead, naked woman in a hot tub. Each page after introduces us to the characters who may be the killer, as well as some supporting cast members like the police chief, his girl Friday, the crime photographer, and a beagle named Cagney.   And the possible killer? The list is lengthy and includes one of many lovers, her husband, a colleague, and a thief. Everything gets messier as we learn about the private lives of these individuals and realize that although the town seems quiet on the outside, the residents are embroiled in scandals ranging from hiding sexual orientations to financial fraud. Throw in some blackmail, attempted rape, and assault - and you have a real story!   This is the latest in Laury's works, and once again, I didn't figure out the killer until the very end. She's very good at giving you the answer but hiding it just enough to keep you guessing! The town was and continues to be called home to many now-historical artists who were forgotten or unsung in their day. This focused series of podcast episodes presented by The Artists Index brings you informative conversations with historians, family members, friends, or acquaintances who once contributed to Fairhaven as Visual, Performing, Literary, or Culinary Artists as well as the supporters, and cultural impresarios of this remarkable corner of the South Coast's creative community. Scott speaks with The Millicent Library's director, Kyle DeCicco Carey * about Lillian Allen Dexter. She was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, on August 29, 1871.  She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1889. From there, she then went on to study at the Cooper Union School in New York City, where she earned a certificate in Pen and Ink Illustration from the school's Women's Art Department in 1893. During the 1890s, Dexter traveled to various locations between Massachusetts, New York, and West Virginia visiting, parks and Civil War battlefields, where she sketched flowers and other botanicals. In the late 1890s, she lived in Washington, D.C., with her uncle, the clerk of the US Senate Finance Committee. While there she worked for the American Rose Company, creating commercial art. After leaving Washington, Dexter settled in Marion, Massachusetts where she remained until her passing on July 13, 1928. Creating optimistic and realistic narratives about the future is essential for inspiring collective action against climate change. In this episode, we meet Steve Willis, an author and innovator, who discusses his climate fiction novel "Fairhaven," which explores solutions to pressing environmental challenges. Steve emphasizes the need for large-scale projects to address the climate crisis and highlights the potential for industries traditionally seen as part of the problem, like oil and gas, to contribute to the solution. The conversation delves into the importance of fostering dialogue between the traditional energy sector and renewable solutions, as well as the role of storytelling in shaping a compelling vision for the future. Takeaways: Creating optimistic and realistic narratives about the future can inspire collective action. The oil and gas industry must adapt to meet climate challenges and leverage their resources. The importance of engaging diverse voices in the dialogue about climate solutions cannot be understated. Despair in the face of climate change leads to inaction; hope can ignite progress. We need multi-million dollar projects to combat climate change at the necessary scale. Fiction can be a powerful tool to visualize and communicate potential climate solutions.
