We're still fixated on HEISTS, people!!! Nick Langdon pops in to discuss Charley Varrick (1973), directed by Don Siegel, and then Hudson Hawk (1991), directed by Michael Lehmann. Walter Matthau gets dark and grisly under Siegel's immaculate directorial hand (even if he didn't get the movie at all, apparently) and Joel Silver lets Bruce Willis' ego off the leash completely (with the result that very few people got the movie at all). Underappreciated gems or not? You be the judge! And then see if you agree with us! It's not really possible to spoil Hudson Hawk (plot is kind of secondary), but we will call out Spoiler Territory for Charley Varrick. If you want to skip ahead from that point, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:23:51 mark to avoid spoilers. Want to get in touch? This week, Emilio, Julian, and Madeline break out the croquet mallets and slushies for a discussion of 'Heathers', the 1989 high school dark comedy starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. This is as formative a movie as there can be for Emilio, who can't help but speak with admiration for this cult classic. They dig into the film's satirical approach to the subject matter, its prescience about a future with rampant school violence, the star-making turns for the film's lead actors, and consider several cinematic predecessors and successors with similar themes and stylistic choices. Julian graces us with another impersonation and a few outside-the-box character comparisons. Madeline has lingering questions about Veronica's true nature. Emilio shares why the college party might be the most important scene in the movie. It's a conversation filled with exploration and earnest appreciation for one of the more influential high school movies of the 1980s. The Back To The Blockbuster team is taking it back to the darker but oh so hilarious part of high school with a look back at Heathers for its 35th anniversary! Written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann, in both of their respective film debuts, the film stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, and Penelope Milford. This twisted black comedy follows four teenage girls, three of whom are named Heather, in a clique at an Ohio high school, one of whose lives is disrupted by the arrival of a misanthrope intent on murdering the popular students and staging their deaths as suicides.
This week on the show, Justus, David and Winona Ryder ascend the dog-eat-dog social hierarchy of Westerburg High School to try to join the Heathers. They soon find out that three preppy rich girls are the least of their worries as they must face off against teachers who exploit teenage suffering, violent airheaded jocks, stoner cops, a pathetic weasel kid with lots of opinions about society and his building-demolishing, mustache-twirling a father that may or may not be Batman's greatest nemesis. Why don't you take a break from your croquet game, grab a slushie and join us for another installment of The Greatest Movie Ever Made? It's going to be quite “very!” Heathers (1988) is directed by Michael Lehmann and stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk and Kim Walker. Our Roulette Extravaganza continues on this week's episode with a look at Michael Lehmann's 1989 cult classic HEATHERS! Synopsis: A girl who halfheartedly tries to be part of the "in crowd" of her school meets a rebel who teaches her a more devious way to play social politics: by killing the popular kids. In this deep dive into the making of HEATHERS, we'll trace the story back to screenwriter Daniel Waters' days working in a video store where he began writing his script, all the way through production, release and the re-discovery of this cult teen film. Theme Song: "There's Still a Little Bit of Time, If We Hurry and I Mean Hurry" by Slasher Film Festival Strategy. This episode was written, produced and edited by Gary Horne & Justin Bishop. On this episode of Podcast Like It's 1989, Actor Lo Kelly joins us to talk about bullies, outsiders, and 80s cheese with Michael Lehmann's directorial debut HEATHERS.What better way to talk about the state of teen romance films in the late 80s, than with a tongue-in-cheek black comedy that riffs on the very best of them? We discuss the influence this movie had on the wrong types of people, and how that parallels the future release of 1999's Fight Club. We also dive into our favorite bits of comedy, the lead performances from Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, and debate the pros and cons of the planned alternate ending. Hosted on Acast. On our series 9 opener, we're pleased as punch to discuss the 1996 romantic comedy, "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" with the film's director, Michael Lehmann. You might also know him having directed a pretty cool movie called, "Heathers". Cats & Dogs is the screenplay debut for Audrey Wells (The Hate U Give, Under the Tuscan Sun) and stars Janeane Garofalo, and Uma Thurman. We had the most delightful and insightful conversation with Mr. Lehmann on what is dated about the film, as well as the myriad ways it was transgressive in the 90s rom com genre. He talks of fighting alongside Wells to preserve the original intent of the script, even going head-to-head with the MPAA on some of the film's more empowering elements. Plus, some fun stories about actors who almost played Brian, and why male actors can be so difficult to work with. You don't wanna miss his answer to our Lunchtime Poll: What is a little white lie you told that spun out of control?
Hello! Welcome to another edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. For this episode, I'm delighted to welcome the legendary Daniel Waters, screenwriter of Heathers, Demolition Man, Batman Returns and the film we're here to talk about today: Hudson Hawk. It's well known that Hudson Hawk went wildly off the rails during production, but whether you love it or loathe it – for me it's a little from column 'A', a little from column 'B' – it was fascinating to hear Steven De Souza's exclusive Hudson Hawk commentary right here on Rogue Commentary back in March, and to re-examine the film here with Daniel Waters, who inherited the project from De Souza in 1990, and substantially rewrote it, for director Michael Lehmann, producer Joel Silver and star Bruce Willis. Hudson Hawk was arguably the victim of a perfect storm of a troubled production, poor marketing, anti-Bruce Willis sentiment, and ahead-of-its-timeism, and all four of those things are discussed here. I'd like to thank Daniel Waters for his time, and for revisiting the film with me, and for former Rogue Commentary guest Josh Olson for putting us in touch. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. We have lots of exciting episodes in the works, so if you like what you hear – or just the idea – please subscribe, and remember to rate us wherever you hear this podcast – it'll really help us to keep going. Pack up the Butterfingers, Dumpster Dwellers, because we're headed to the Amazon this week with Mr. Lobo to MEET THE APPLEGATES! The spread of deforestation in the South American rainforest has been destroying the homes of local wildlife. Unbeknownst to the outside world, a race of giant insects with shapeshifting abilities plot to infiltrate Small Town USA and execute a nuclear holocaust in retaliation. Directed by Michael Lehmann of "Heathers" fame, comes another satirical cult classic lost in the shuffle of the early 90s due to poor marketing and the collapse of New World Pictures. Join Dick, Jane, Sally, and Johnny as they try to navigate the American dream and the trials and tribulations of life as humans.
Forrest, J. Andrew World, Conan Neutron, and Kristina Oakes talk to director Michael Lehmann (Heathers, Hudson Hawk) about directing Adam Sandler, Brendan Fraser, and Steve Buscemi in the 1994 comedy Airheads!!
Almost immediately after BOTTOMS premiered at this year's SXSW, the heightened mix of satire and violence in Emma Seligman's new film drew comparisons to Michael Lehmann's HEATHERS, which in 1989 set a new high-water mark for upending the high-school movie tropes of the day through a darkly comedic lens. How does a movie that turns teenage suicide (don't do it) into a punchline fare by today's standards? That's up for discussion in this half of our pairing, along with how HEATHERS executes its tricky tonal balance, its characterization of the high school experience and the parents and teachers who just don't understand, and an ending that's either a cop-out or the complete opposite, depending on who you ask and when. And in a Feedback letter inspired by our recent episode on ENCHANTED, a listener challenges us to name some recent films that could become “flawed pioneers,” without the benefit of hindsight. Ira Sachs' new PASSAGES centers on a relationship broadly similar to the one at the center of SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY, but approaches it with a different level of intimacy and intensity (one that earned it an NC-17 rating before the filmmakers opted to release it unrated). We're joined once again by freelance critic and friend of the show Noel Murray to talk through the different points of characterization and performance on PASSAGES' love triangle, before looking at how the two films compare and contrast in their critiques of hetero-monogamous normativity, their ideas about suppressed jealousy and art, and their frank, arguably “graphic” depictions of homosexual desire. And in Your Next Picture Show, we offer a mini-revisitation of another John Schlesinger film that is impossible to avoid when considering this pairing. Today, we're stepping into the shoes of rebellious teenagers in the satirical dark comedy classic, "Heathers".Directed by Michael Lehmann, HEATHERS is a 1989 cult film that deconstructs the teen movie genre with a razor-sharp script by Daniel Waters. The film stars Winona Ryder as Veronica, a high school student looking to break free from her toxic friend group - the Heathers. Her life takes a dark turn when she gets involved with the school's sociopathic outsider, played with brooding charisma by Christian Slater. We'll dive into the film's biting wit, its raw and insightful take on high school politics, and its subversive critique of teen movie tropes. We'll discuss the memorable performances from Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, who create a fascinating, morally complex duo at the heart of this dark narrative. We'll also talk about the film's bold exploration of heavy themes like peer pressure, bullying, and teen suicide, all wrapped in a veneer of pitch-black humor and 80s aesthetics. And of course, we'll revel in the iconic one-liners and memorable scenes that have made Heathers a standout film in the dark comedy genre. So, grab your croquet mallet and join us as we navigate the cruel hallways of Westerburg High with Heathers. We love to hear from our listeners! Jodie and Andrea are using the off-season break to share the movies that made them the kind of people who were destined to be obsessed with a show like Yellowjackets. Jodie kicks it off with her first pick, the 1989 black comedy, Heathers, written by Daniel Waters, directed by Michael Lehmann, and starring 80s icons Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and plenty of other familiar faces. We don't treat this like a typical recap podcast. We do break the movie down, but we're much more interested in what it has to say about its cultural context, how it informed the teen movie genre moving forward, and what reflecting on it in 2023 tells us about our current cultural moment. Of course, we talk about the fashion and language of the movie because it's Heathers. How can you not? Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb. This is the podcast where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this week's episode, the guys are joined by Sammy from the GGTMC and Jose from Watch/Skip+ to discuss 1991's action comedy - Hudson Hawk. Starring the legendary Bruce Willis as our titular character, Hudson Hawk leans heavy into the comedy and the works of Leonardo da Vinci. Yeah, this film is pretty bonkers. Audiences and critics didn't “catch the Hawk” on its initial release but the film has become a cult hit. Did our podcast crew enjoy Bruno's vanity project and laugh at all of the silly quips? CONTENT WARNING: The plot of Heathers (1989) uses the act of suicide as a plot device for comedic effect throughout the film, and therefore, is a dark comedy. If you are sensitive to those kinds of themes in the media you consume, please be aware of that before listening to this episode. On today's episode, we're going to play a game of croquet with our new best friends, head over to the Snappy Snack Shack for a Turbo Dog, and also try to stop our crazy ex-boyfriend from killing other people at our high school, while we revisit the pitch black dark comedy, Heathers (1989). This movie was written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann. Joining me for this episode is Donovan Marcotte. He's a fellow gay who also loves this movie, and me and him talk about how fabulous this movie is, and just how it shaped us into the 'mo that we are today. This movie stars Winona Ryder (Little Women, Stranger Things), Christian Slater (Interview With a Vampire, Mr. Robot), Shannen Doherty (Charmed, Beverly Hills, 90210), Lisanne Falk (Night on Earn, Less than Zero), and Kim Walker (Say Anything..., A Reason to Believe). This movie is so iconic for the teen film genre. It showed that you can go dark in a high school movie, and paved the way for many movies after it. This film is such a great example of a cult classic, and deserves to be watched by any fan of teen movies or just dark comedies in general. This is also pretty much required viewing for any gay folks, so of course I had to chime in!!Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleFollow Donovan on InstagramShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. “What's your damage, Heather?”For the second instalment of Oliver's "Teenage Riot" theme, the Movie Newbies are diving into Michael Lehmann's 1989 cult classic HEATHERS. Starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater as the Bonnie and Clyde for the MTV Generation, Heathers is an ultra-dark, subversive, outrageous and delightfully weird teen comedy about teen suicide and the dog-eat-dog nature of high school. It has been said that without Heathers, there wouldn't be Mean Girls. We talk with screenwriter Daniel Waters about his debut film HEATHERS, one of the last films released in theaters by New World Pictures! Our hilarious and wide-ranging discussion goes from Daniel's beginnings working on the South Bend sketch comedy show Beyond Our Control, to his move to Hollywood, where he watched many New World movies (especially his favorite, JAKE SPEED) and worked in a video store while writing HEATHERS. We dive into Daniel incredible career and especially HEATHERS - how it got started, Daniel's initial discussion with director Michael Lehmann, how strip crochet actually works, the various possible endings, and New World's botched release, which was only saved by a questionable VHS cover that helped spark a following, and much more - as well as stories about THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE, DEMOLITION MAN, HUDSON HAWK, and more! But will Daniel forgive Marc for trashing BATMAN RETURNS? Listen to find out!

Shabadoo, and welcome back to 'Sand-Man: Into the Sandler-Verse!' This week, Ruben holds Andrew hostage for a discussion about Michael Lehmann's ‘Airheads' (1994). Adam Sandler, Brendan Fraser and Steve Buscemi are just three crusty punks who want their band, The Lone Rangers, to make it big—and they're willing to do anything to make it happen (even if that means holding an entire radio station hostage with plastic guns). If you put ‘Wayne's World,' ‘Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure,' ‘Joe Dirt' and ‘Die Hard' into a blender, this is the movie that would pop out—and that's not necessarily a bad thing. High school angst films were the big thing back in the day. They still hold some power in today's world. Some of the most memorable are films like CLUELESS (1995), JAWBREAKER (1999), or MEAN GIRLS (2004). One of the biggest cult films of them all, HEATHERS, came out in 1989. With its social dystopia along with its dreamlike results took Generation X by storm. Though a failure at the box office, the movie became a success on video tape. Veronica (Winona Ryder) goes to Westerburg High School in Sherwood, Ohio. When she is accepted into the popular clique Heathers lead by Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), she thinks she's finally find her identity. When she discovers that being a Heather isn't all what its was built up to, she finds solace in J.D. Dean (Christian Slater), an outsider rebel who gives her hope. Soon the two of them start going down a dark path that leads to worse things than high school politics. The movie was directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Daniel Waters. Besides Christian Slater and Winona Ryder, the film co-stars Shannen Doherty, Kim Waters, and Lisanne Falk. The movie helped jettison Slater, Ryder, and Doherty to stardom, and laid out the way future high school films would be made. Dark Discussions takes a look at this Patreon pick and gives their thoughts on this cult classic.
