The QuadPod

The final episode of season two highlights six "personal projects" from the audio journalism elective at Baylor. First, we hear from Nathan Andreotti ('23). Nathan interviews his parents, Marcio Andreotti and Marcia Ulinski, about their decision to leave Brazil for the US and begin a new life right here in Chattanooga, TN. Next, we join Halden Williams ('22), Vivi Christopoulos ('23), and Autumn Phillips ('24) to discuss the evolution of the girls wrestling team at Baylor. Next, Gaston Carmichael ('22) interviews his father, Alan Carmichael ('82), about following his childhood passion for baseball all the way to the pros. Then, Weston Carico ('22) interviews his father, Trey Carico ('91), about their shared love of rafting and paddling the southeast's great rivers and what being on the water has taught them along the way. Next, Abagail Bailey ('23) brings us a unique audio drama about the final eight minutes before the end of the world. Finally, Alexis Janosz ('22) delivers the story of Kevin Murphey, a family friend whose world came crashing down at an early age. Escaping a rough childhood of abuse and neglect, Kevin learned to fight off the demons in his life with a steadfast faith and a sense of gratitude for even the hardest lessons. In between these stories, we hear excerpts from several peer interviews conducted in the audio journalism class. These conversations feature Owen Trainor ('23), Bridger Knee ('22), Sheldon McKnight ('22), Jasper Bulley ('22), Alexis Janosz ('22), and William Duncan ('22). On this episode, we explore the Baylor boarding experience, both from the perspective of several current boarding students and from the dorm parents, past and present, who care for them. First, we go through a typical day as a boarder with Jasper Bulley ('22). Then, we sit down with English faculty member and dean of 9th and 10th-grade residential life, Takisha Haynie, and her son, Evan Haynie ('23), to discuss what it's been like to call Baylor home for over 20 years. Next, we join Bridger Knee ('22) as he walks the halls of Lupton during the evening to see what students are up to during the nighttime hours. Then, we visit the dining hall to catch up with a group of current faculty children about what they like about growing up on campus and what their dining hall favorites are. Following that, we sit down with former legendary Baylor basketball coach and current assistant dean of students, Austin Clark, and his son, Jordan Clark ('09), to talk about Jordan's formative years growing up on campus and how they shaped who he is today. Then, we spend a Saturday in Lupton with Henry Doering ('22) and his dorm “parent” Jesse Young to discover what weekends are like on campus. Finally, we head out to the quad with William Duncan ('22) and Emma Thompson ('22) for a final word on what boarders like best about calling Baylor home. On this episode, we're going to do a little time traveling. First, we go back to 1985 with Jasper Bulley ('22) and Scott Wilson ('75), former head of school and, back in 85, head of admissions at Baylor, to get the backstory on Baylor's decision to go co-ed. Then, Gaston Carmichael ('22) and Alexis Janosz ('22) sit down with Barry and Alexis Bogo (class of '85 and '89 respectively) to get a glimpse from the student perspective of Baylor's transition to a co-ed institution. Next, we go back even further with Emma Thompson ('22) and Baylor world language instructor Kenneth Parks to hear the story of a true female pioneer on Baylor's campus, the first full-time female faculty member, Madame Scheni, who began her teaching career at Baylor in 1962. Finally, we travel back to the future with Lis Cortes ('22), or, I guess, the present, and hear from four female faculty members—Betsy Carmichael, Kristin Vines, Priscilla Birdsall, and Takisha Haynie—who exemplify all the good that was gained by adding women at Baylor. Young adults today face numerous challenges as they move along the path to becoming successful adults. Here at Baylor, we live by the motto: Amat Victoria Curam (Victory Loves Care). On this episode, we will explore key services that Baylor provides for students to help them navigate the academic and social pressures of their daily lives. In addition, we will hear two incredible stories of resilient individuals who overcame unique hardships and learn just how they beat the odds and forged a path to victory. First, Gail Bailey ('23) sits down with Kathy Fraley, head of the counseling center, to talk about the center's purpose in the community. Next, Sheldon McKnight ('22) interviews Jennifer Averbeck, director of the learning center, about this popular hub for academic support. Then, Gaston Carmichael ('22) speaks with ultra-marathoner and author, Dion Leonard, about his life-changing encounter in the Gobi desert in China. And finally, senior Halden Williams ('22) gets the backstory from Baylor student Hannah Turner ('22) about her battle with cancer and how she overcame a challenging junior year with the support of friends, family, and a healthy mindset. Next, Lizzie Hill ('22) talks to some of Baylor's finest cheerleaders about where they get their spirit from. Grace Henderson ('23) interviews Baylor's new chaplain, Reverend Alex Gallimore, on what spirit means to him. And finally, Reese Hullander ('23) and Watson Brown ('22) feature the story behind the smiles and waves of Baylor legend Ms. Hattie. On this episode, we explore new beginnings. Lizzie Hill ('22) and Reese Hullander ('23) visit a 6th-grade class to learn what students are most excited about in starting their Baylor careers. We get to know two of our international boarding students, Jakub Ucieszynski ('24), who hails from Poland and is attending school in the US for the first time, and David Danquah ('21), a fourth-year boarding student from Ghana. The two discuss what it's like to be so far from their respective cultures, and how they have found a new home at Baylor. Ethan Wright ('22) and John Emendorfer ('23) catch up with Mike Kinney, coach of the varsity baseball team, and his son Cooper Kinney ('21), about an exciting new chapter in their lives as Cooper begins a career in professional baseball. Brett Cooper ('21) sits down with Chris Angel ('89), the new head of Baylor School, to discuss his joyous return to our campus and his dream for Baylor's present and future. And finally, Watson Brown ('22) and Dalton Restelli ('23) visit the quad to learn what seniors are hoping to try before their time as Baylor students comes to a close. On this episode, we celebrate the tenure and legacy of Scott Wilson ('75) who has served our school as headmaster for the past twelve years. First, we start by speaking with Susan Collins, Scott's assistant during those years, and someone who knows him as well as anybody. Next, we sit down with Matt Lewis ('74), who offers us a perspective on Scott's legacy and the transformative effect his fundraising efforts have brought to the campus during his tenure, and finally, senior Orly Berke ('21) gives Scott his exit interview. Interspersed, we'll hear some highlights from Scott's final speech to the student body and well wishes from some of his closest friends and supporters. On this episode, we tell the remarkable story of how freshman Luke Thompson ('24) became one of the top birding experts in our region and established Baylor's campus as the premiere location for birding in the state. First we speak with Susan Wilson (wife of headmaster Scott Wilson), an avid birder herself who took Luke under her proverbial wing when he was just a shy sixth grader with an interest in birds. Then we speak with Kevin Calhoun, curator of forests at the Tennessee Aquarium and one of the leading bird experts in the state about his friendship with Luke and what makes Baylor such a unique location for birding. Finally, we head out on campus with Luke himself in an attempt to discover how this unassuming young man has almost single-handedly made Baylor the center of the birding world in Tennessee.
