FITZGERALDS (6615 Roosevelt in Berwyn) is, without a doubt, one of my favorite places to see music and simply hang out. The vibe is always chill, and the bookings are fantastic. Beyond that, the building is historic! FITZGERALDS was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Park Service at the end of last year. In advance of the plaque dedication on May 3, co-owners Will Duncan and Jess King jumped in the car to talk about the storied history of FITZGERALDS, as well as its impact on the local and music communities. Adding the “Carne” to this episode is BABYGOLD BARBECUE, the killer restaurant that’s part of the FITZGERALDS campus. Will and Jess brought a massive sampler of the BABYGOLD menu into the car, and we did our best to make our way through it. Chef Steve Domanik is doing amazing things over in Berwyn… Can’t make it to the plaque dedication? You’ll see it afterward when you go to any upcoming show at FITZGERALDS. Is hypnosis a real thing? Is Neuro-Linguistic programming a scam? Are there important elements of influence and persuasion that just can not be taught? You will discover the answers to all these questions and more as we delve into the secret world of the mentalist. Mentalism is the performance art of demonstrating seemingly magical and mysterious powers of influence and persuasion, at times appearing to cross into the realms of magic, but as my guest Duncan Stevens tells us, mentalism and magic are very different worlds. If you have ever seen the amazing Derren Brown at work, you will know that mentalism and tricks or sleights of the mind can be very entertaining and also quite spectacular. Duncan Stevens is a professional mentalist, a terrific keynote speaker and the author of Effective Influence, one of the few books on influence and persuasion I have ever come across that gives us useful and practical examples of influence and persuasion at work. Duncan is also the CEO and founder of the Influence Association in the UK, an organisation that helps businesses understand and apply the psychology of influence and persuasion, to be able to stand out in the marketplace. In this very enjoyable and fun conversation, Duncan and I got onto talking about things like manipulation, using influence and persuasion to con people and how stage hypnosis works. We also had the chance to discuss suggestibility and the predictability of humans who like to think of ourselves as unpredictable, which he very capably demonstrates on me with several tricks. In this episode: What is mentalism? Is hypnosis real? Why mentalism is not magic. Is manipulation always bad? Will Duncan be able to trick Johnny? Why we need to understand influence on business Can you be mind-controlled? What is the one tool of influence that can not be taught? You can find out more about Duncan at https://duncanstevens.com/ (DuncanStevens.com) and at the https://influenceassociation.com/ (InfluenceAssociation.com) and you can check out his book Effective Influence on Amazon https://amzn.to/3KSM322 (https://amzn.to/3KSM322). (We use Amazon affiliate links and we may make a few pennies from your purchases but it won't cost you any extra.) Next time on the show I am speaking with the silky smooth voice of Daniel Tolson, a professional coach, speaker, trainer and podcaster who had so many business fails you would have thought he'd give up. He didn't and he is now very successful and also a super nice guy. I promise you won't want to miss it. Also, keep an eye out for new influence & persuasion book reviews coming up and some new style of episodes where I'm going to share some of my knowledge and experience around influence and persuasion. In addition, we will hear two incredible stories of resilient individuals who overcame unique hardships and learn just how they beat the odds and forged a path to victory. First, Gail Bailey ('23) sits down with Kathy Fraley, head of the counseling center, to talk about the center's purpose in the community. Next, Sheldon McKnight ('22) interviews Jennifer Averbeck, director of the learning center, about this popular hub for academic support. Then, Gaston Carmichael ('22) speaks with ultra-marathoner and author, Dion Leonard, about his life-changing encounter in the Gobi desert in China. And finally, senior Halden Williams ('22) gets the backstory from Baylor student Hannah Turner ('22) about her battle with cancer and how she overcame a challenging junior year with the support of friends, family, and a healthy mindset. This episode is hosted by Lis Cortes ('22) and Will Duncan ('22) with studio recording by Jasper Bulley ('22).

Normally, i can think of some quick witted ways of delving into my guest's character, and for this episode I am going to highlight how great the Will Duncan is by borrowing the bio from his website: Will Duncan has taught throughout the world including Asia, Europe, Eastern Europe, South America and throughout the United States. He is a lecturer, meditation teacher, yoga instructor, retreat leader, and lavender farmer. At the age of 14 he met his teacher, Murray Rogers, and began a 23 year apprenticeship with him studying the world's scriptural traditions as well as a systematic approach to meditation. In 2010 Will completed 7 years of training in the open and higher teachings of the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Upon completion he entered a traditional 3-year meditation retreat where he engaged in silent and solitary deep practice from 2010 - 2014. Upon completion of retreat Will was asked to begin teaching by his lamas. Following in all of his teacher's footsteps, Will's passion is in bringing to life the relevance and living profundity of the scriptural traditions. Deeply devoted to the Mahayana and Bodhisattva ideals of the cultivation of limitless compassion, Will draws on various traditions to shed light on the potential and urgency of waking up into our day-to-day lives. Known for his down-to-earth humor and ease, Will teaches by way of inquiry and lively discussion pushing students to think clearly for themselves and to uncover their own insights. *w/ special guest Will Duncan The cycle of birth and death. Who are you born to, what kind of family is it? Is it love or hate or both. Love and Hate, Fear and Insecurity, Stone Genius one step forward 3 back 2 sideways. I'm Grateful for it all. I'm grateful to be surrounded by people today who feel the emotions that drive the cycle of life and death. My guests today have been preparing themselves for peace in different ways. It could be through silent retreat for three years on a Mountain of Diamonds, it could be the resiliency of a Kid from NYC who was dreaming and connecting with his multi-dimensional self at as early as 5 years old- a prodigy drummer who hung in those parks in the Bronx banging the drum all day as the side paneling all fell off and he could find his true nature. He saw the worst of the human animal and became a beacon of light, inspiration and perspective without the need for adulation. It could be a renaissance musician who was partially responsible for the rebirths and reincarnation of improvisational melodic soul in an acoustic trio setting. Playing old barns like The Sommerville Theatre or the Middle East with Ra-Kalamazoo Bob Moses playing free spirited music connecting with his multi-dimensional self. This host used to refer to it as "out of body" but in the cycle of birth and death you either check out or live. You know you are alive if you feel pain when you are hurt or are the hurter. You know your alive When you have people floating in a see of liquid acid spinning wheels in a circus of sound in Maine and Vermont and Kentucky where the finest bourbon is made to numb you from being alive. Because being alive means you have to accept who you are. As we have seen with icons they can toe that line of invincibility and than succumb to the lashings of public castration for secrets they may or may not have been hiding for years. We are not infallible creatures which is why I have convened this panel. How to access your multi-dimensional being us essential to peace or getting as close to peace as you can. My show is about elevating the truths of leadership, how to love and not just be loved, when does the heart speak for itself, in my mind its when life is put in perspective by natural events it could be addiction, it could be the falling apart and repair of a ill fated trip, it could be the dissolution of a partnership or fatherhood. My guests today have lived musical lives trying to balance between the elevated state of magic and the perfunctory realization of coming off the road to clean up dog droppings in the backyard. You are told over and over how good you are, how spiritual you are, how patient you are how do you do that? The questions become exhausting because any multi-dimensional being knows they are struggling with the balance and need mentors to get closer to peace. To be satisfied with feelings and getting together to play when it feels right, play in a group and listen to each other, play melodies of the song that the bass and drums and guitar and piano or VOX organ can dance around that and begin to feel peace. So much is promised very little is guaranteed. One guarantee is that I live for moments like this. Where we can celebrate getting closer to the truth while were putting in time on planet earth. Today’s guest has been a partner and friend to GBH for years. He’s a former GM for 16 on Center, a restaurant and venue group in Chicago known for its Michelin Star restaurant, Longman & Eagle, as well as music venues like The Empty Bottle and Thalia Hall. If Thalia Hall sounds familiar, that’s because it’s played host to our Uppers & Downers festival basically since its inception. So much of what the festival has become has been substantially shaped by the physical space of Thalia Hall—it’s history, and Will Duncan himself. In this conversation, we’re going to talk about some of that, but also how Will has risen through the ranks over the years, from a part-time door guy to GM, to multi-venue manager across the growing empire of bars, restaurants, and venues, and finally launching his own venue as he takes over the historic FitzGerald’s venue in Berwyn, Illinois. He happened to sign the papers for that venue—venturing into his life-long dream of being an entrepreneur in his own right—about a week before COVID-19 turn our world upside down, and places like FitzGerald’s shut down. A dream interrupted. But still kicking. I’ve learned a ton from Will over the years. Sometimes explicitly, sometimes just by following his example and experimenting with his kind of team-based leadership. I often describe Will as the most optimistic man in America. But one thing I know is that sometimes optimism comes easy and natural—and sometimes optimism is damn hard work. This conversation is about the work. This is Will Duncan of FitzGerald’s and 16 on Center. Listen in.

Pleasure Prince is a New York-based duo featuring Lilly Scott, formerly of Denver band Varlet. She and bandmate Will Duncan create pop music that blends disco, electronica and psychedelic influences. Scott switches instruments from guitar to synthesizer for the new band, but her outstanding vocals remain a centerpiece of her music. Pleasure Prince stopped into the CPR Performance Studio before a headlining show at Denver's Hi-Dive. Scott and Duncan played three songs and spoke with Scott Carney about the origin of their collaboration, how teaching piano lessons helped the band develop and plans for a full-length record.

"Can he risk it?" "Yes he can!" In this episode, joined by guest Will Duncan, we discuss “Bob le Flambeur” (1956). Is it more of a gangster film or a heist film? How does this French film compare stylistically to those we've watched from Asia, Britain and the U.S.A.? And is ‘Bob' even a French name? (Yes, apparently.) All that and more in this week's episode of ‘The Podfather'. ↳ Skip to the movie: 12.04
