Selma Lagerlöf poetically recorded old Norse fairytales and profoundly influenced Swedish identity. Her work was so brilliant, she was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1909. In old age, she turned her poetic pen to her own life, recalling winters in the 1860s at her beloved Varmland farmhouse, Mårbaka. For our annual Christmas Special, we bring her poignant memoirs to life, accompanied by an audio feast of traditional Swedish music. God Jul! Music featured in this episode was generously shared by Blås, Balg & Tagel, Haga Vokalensemble, MrsBean 1987, Kevin MacLeod, Aaron Kenny, DJ Williams, The Westerlies, and Wayne Jones. The unofficial nature of the latest meeting between Chinese and United States senior diplomats points to the serious damage that Washington has brought to its ties with Beijing and the dire need to repair the great shortage of mutual trust, observers said. They made the observation as senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi met in "an unofficial engagement" with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the request of the US side on the sidelines of the 59th Munich Security Conference on Saturday.2月18日,中国高级外交官王毅在出席第59届慕尼黑安全会议期间,应美方请求,同美国国务卿布林肯进行了“非正式接触”。Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, made explicit "China's solemn position on the so-called airship incident", according to a statement by the Foreign Ministry. He asked the US to "change course (and) acknowledge and repair the damage that its excessive use of force caused to China-US relations". Earlier this month, the US military shot down a Chinese unmanned airship that was spotted in US airspace, triggering Beijing's strong protests. China reiterated that the civilian unmanned airship, due to the Westerlies — prevailing winds from the west — and limited self-steering capability, deviated from its planned course and entered US airspace. Before and following the shooting down of the airship, some senior US officials and politicians hyped the airship and China's so-called "threat" to the US. An unnamed Foreign Ministry spokesperson quoted Wang on Sunday as saying at the talks with Blinken that "the US is in no position to smear China. What the US needs to do is demonstrate sincerity and face up to and resolve the damage that its abuse of force has done to China-US relations".2月19日,一位不愿透露姓名的外交部发言人援引王毅在与布林肯会谈时的话说,“美国没有资格抹黑中国。美方需要做的是拿出诚意,正视和解决其滥用武力给中美关系造成的损害。”Wang said that "if the US continues to dramatize, hype up or escalate the situation, China will surely respond by doing what is necessary", and "all consequences arising thereof shall be borne by the US side", according to the spokesperson. Wu Xinbo, dean of Fudan University's Institute of International Studies, noted that since the meeting between President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden in Bali, Indonesia, in November, the two governments' working teams from diplomacy, security, treasury and trade departments have embarked on dialogue to further implement the consensus reached by the two leaders. Yet on the other side, Washington has not slowed down its pace in stepping up suppression against China, including in sectors such as leading science and technology. To be fair, the Biden administration's China policy is still double-faced," Wu said. Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday that the US had released high-altitude balloons that illegally flew into China's airspace "more than 10 times without the approval of relevant Chinese authorities "since May, and China had handled the balloons "in a calm and professional manner".2月15日,中国外交部发言人王文斌表示,自2022年5月以来,美国“未经中方有关部门批准,至少10多次非法飞越中国领空”,中方“以冷静和专业的方式”处理了这些气球。When answering questions at a China session of the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Wang Yi said the airship incident is "a political farce", and an underlying factor behind Washington's hyping up of the airship's accidental entry is "the US' wrong perception and strategic misjudgment of China".2月18日,王毅在慕尼黑安全会议中国分会场回答问题时表示,飞艇事件是“一场政治闹剧”,华盛顿炒作飞艇意外进入的另一个潜在因素是“美国对中国的错误认知和战略误判”。"A lot of balloons are flying over the Earth every day. Does the US want to shoot them all down? Such an action is no proof of the US' power, but the exact opposite," he said. At the Saturday conference, Wang urged Washington to "stop doing such absurd things out of domestic political needs" and to "show sincerity and correct its mistakes". SuXiaohui, an associate research fellow at the China Institute of International Studies, said, "High-level communications between Beijing and Washington have encountered serious obstacles due to the US domestic political atmosphere, the trade of barbs between the Democrats and Republicans, and anti-China sentiment in the country. 中国国际问题研究院国际战略研究所副所长苏晓晖说:“由于美国国内的政治氛围,民主党和共和党之间的交易,以及国内的反华情绪,北京和华盛顿之间的高层沟通遇到了严重的障碍。"For Beijing, it is still open to collaboration. It looks to stabilize the ties with the US through dialogues and put the relations back on track. Still, it takes two to tango, and Washington should work toward the same goal," Su added.苏晓晖补充道:“对于北京来说,它仍然对合作持开放态度。中方希望通过对话稳定中美关系,推动中美关系重回正轨。然而,一个巴掌拍不响,美方应该朝着同一个目标努力。”Policy researchers and media around the world have voiced grave concerns about rising China-US tensions over the airship, the Taiwan question and US restrictions on trade and semiconductor technologies related to China.围绕飞艇事件、台湾问题以及美国对华贸易和半导体技术限制,中美关系日益紧张,世界各地的政策研究人员和媒体对其表示严重关切。In Munich, Wang criticized the US CHIPS and Science Act as the use of one country's power to suppress Chinese companies, and said it disrupts the stability of global industrial and supply chains.在慕尼黑,王毅批评美国的《芯片和科学法案》是利用一国之力压制中国企业,并表示这破坏了全球产业链和供应链的稳定。The act is"100 percent unilateral and self-serving and it 100 percent violates the rules of the World Trade Organization", he said. "The US is standing against the free trade that it has been advocating."王毅说,这一行为“百分之百是单方面的、自私自利的,百分之百违反了世界贸易组织的规则”。“美国正在反对它一直倡导的自由贸易。”Speaking on overall China-US ties, Wang said that China's policy toward the US is based on clear and transparent principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, yet "the US sees China as the gravest geopolitical challenge and strategic competitor".在谈到中美关系时,王毅表示中国对美政策是基于相互尊重、和平共处、合作共赢的明确透明原则基础上的,但“美国视中国为最严重的地缘政治挑战和战略竞争对手”。Saying that China has never been afraid of competition despite all the US talking about competing with China, Wang urged the US to view China's development in a fair and objective way, pursue a positive and pragmatic China policy, and work together with China to bring China-US relations back on track.王毅表示,尽管美国一直在说要与中国竞争,但中国从来不害怕竞争。他敦促美方公正客观地看待中国的发展,奉行积极务实的对华政策,与中方共同努力,推动中美关系重回正轨。Also at the conference, Wang announced that China will soon release a concept paper on the Global Security Initiative, which was proposed by President Xi last year.王毅还在会上宣布,中国将于近期发表“全球安全倡议”概念文件,这是习近平主席去年提出的倡议。It will provide more systematic thinking and more feasible initiatives to address global security challenges, and China welcomes the active participation of all countries, Wang said.中方欢迎各国积极参与,这将为应对全球安全挑战提供更系统的思考和更可行的措施。Semiconductor英 [ˌsemikənˈdʌktə(r)] 美 [ˈsemikəndʌktər]n. 半导体Initiative英 [ɪˈnɪʃətɪv] 美 [ɪˈnɪʃətɪv]n. 措施

In this episode, Lou provides a slice of biography, zooming in on John Brown's personal and economic challenges as a frontier entrepreneur and his often forgotten comeback in the early 1840s. While overlooked by unstudied and prejudiced scholars, Brown actually bounced back in the mid-1840s and distinguished himself as one of the leading experts on fine sheep and wool. Looking at Brown's attempt to intervene on behalf of wool growers in the 1840s, we get further insight into Brown's inclination to defend the underdog.  This observation provides a way to revisit the bias and prejudice that Brown's legacy has long faced both from the academy and Hollywood--a bias that we are still pushing back against today. The story of John Brown is not complicated: Brown is very consistent, and it is no surprise that his inclination to defend the downcast and the vulnerable would be a theme that flows from wool to slavery. This episode provides a special interlude and conclusion with special music by The Westerlies, featuring their song, "Burden Laid Down."  Visit the Westerlies website at westerliesmusic.com.

The album features a heavyweight line-up of guests, including Taylor Swift, Sharon Van Etten, This Is The Kit, Ben Howard, Naeem, Lisa Hannigan, My Brightest Diamond's Shara Nova, and on today's Song of the Day, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes and Tony Award-winning singer/songwriter Anaïs Mitchell.  "'Phoenix' was one of the last songs we wrote for this record," Dessner says via a press release. "I was thinking about The Band and the Grateful Dead... maybe imagining this Big Red Machine album was some version of The Last Waltz. Justin first heard it while driving and immediately the chorus melody came into his head. I shared the sketch with Robin Pecknold, who I've been a fan of forever and who I'd been dreaming would join us on this record. Robin wrote the verses and pre chorus as a kind of dialogue with Justin, recalling a conversation they once had backstage in Phoenix. Later Anais wrote words to the chorus and The Westerlies added their magic to the instrumental. JT Bates rumbles around in rare form on the drums on this song. I think it's what I always imagined Big Red Machine would sound like." Pecknold adds, “It was a high, high honor to work on this song, and beyond that it was a really interesting creative challenge. Justin's vocals and the beautiful chorus were already in place before I got my hands on it, so I felt my job melodically and lyrically was to set his entrance up in the best possible way. I felt like a pilgrim putting questions to an elusive sage, not needing clear answers, but happy for the chance to ask.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

'I Am Omar': How the Post and Courier searched for Omar ibn Said's true identity

The question is one that propelled a lengthy reporting process and led a pair of journalists from South Carolina across the Atlantic Ocean to Senegal: Who was Omar ibn Said, really? When two Post and Courier journalists started pursuing that question, they knew Omar was a Muslim scholar who, at age 37, was captured from his home in Futa Toro and forced onto a slave ship bound for Charleston. Omar had lived the rest of his life enslaved, first in South Carolina and then North Carolina.Throughout that time, Omar wrote at least 15 surviving texts in Arabic, including the only known surviving autobiography written in Arabic by someone still enslaved in America. When that autobiography was bought by the Library of Congress, digitized and made available to the public, Omar’s story sprang from obscurity. While Omar's writing gave insight into his life, his past and his faith, it also raised questions. He provided little detail about where he was from. That mystery of what place Omar had called home became key to The Post and Courier's Pulitzer Center-supported project. This week, the journalists behind that project, writer Jennifer Berry Hawes and photographer Gavin McIntyre, share details from their reporting process, the challenges they ran into along the way and what their days in Senegal taught them about who Omar really was. While some of the questions they sought out to answer didn't have a definitive resolution, their quest — with the help of translators, imams, historians and others — uncovered new revelations about Omar's life. Listen now for more.Read the project: 'I Am Omar': A quest for the true identity of Omar ibn Said, a Muslim man enslaved in the CarolinasUnderstand SC is a weekly podcast from The Post and Courier that draws from the reporting resources and knowledge of our newsroom to help you better understand South Carolina. …and so is Jazz Northwest. This week's show features the title music from The Westerlies brass quartet's new album "Wherein Lies the Good." It's a 15-minute suite originally composed for piano by Robin Holcomb but here arranged by Andy Clausen for brass quartet with two trumpets and two trombones. It's a slice of Americana played by a quartet that the New York Times described as “an arty quartet…mixing ideas from jazz, new classical, and Appalachian folk”. Also this week: Although the opportunities for actually experiencing live music have currently disappeared due to social distancing and the pandemic, we do have some recordings of earlier live performances in Seattle...including Cannonball Adderley at The Penthouse (1966), Jay Thomas at Tula's (2002) and The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra at Kirkland Performance Center (2008). Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by host Jim Wilke and airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Listeners may also subscribe to the podcast at KNKX, NPR, Apple , or

The Westerlies is a brass quartet including 3 former Seattle residents who formed the group when they were students at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of music. The quartet of two trumpets and two trombones is unusual in jazz, with no rhythm section or chordal instrument. Their repertoire is also unusually wide-ranging, including Americana, 20th century composers such as Bartok and Ives, original music and in their new album, spirituals inspired by the Golden Gate Quartet. The new album "Wherein Lies The Good" has just been released and they will celebrate with four performances in Seattle next week at the Westerlies Fest . Also featured on this week's show is new music by Portland trumpet player and composer Charlie Porter from his extended suite "Immigration Nation," and two albums nominated for Earshot's Golden Ear Awards for NW Recording of the year - Xavier Lecouturier's "Carrier" and Marina Albero's "A Life Soundtrack." Next week we feature a concert Tribute to Billie Holiday

We start 2020 where we left off in 2019, exploring great new releases. During the first hour we feature music ranging from the upcoming release of the Afrobeat ambassadors Antibalas, who are turning 20 this year, to a previously unreleased superb 1975 live performance by Pharoah Sanders. In the process we take a look at the vibrant Swedish scene with the music of Oddjob and its pianist Daniel Karlsson, two recent albums featuring saxophonist Greg Ward, a very original take on Cole Porter and the contagious music of Mwenso & the Shakes and the Horne Electric Band together with one of our favorite albums of 2019, "Everybody Wins" by Amendola vs. Blades. In the second part we focus, in particular, on the work of drummer Jim Black with his new trio and as a member of the outstanding Dark Dry Tears led by Italian bassist Danilo Gallo, and on another batch of genre-defying releases by International Anthem, featuring Jeff Parker, Resavoir 's drummer Jeremy Cunningham and the first European player signed by the Chicago label, British saxophonist Alabaster DePlume. The playlist also features Baptiste Trotignon, The Westerlies, Alice Ricciardi & Pietro Lussu, Michele Rosewoman, Lica Cecato and Paolo Baltaro Orchestra as well as Philipp Gropper. Happy listening! KNKX hosted students of Seattle JazzED's Summer Advanced Institute for a second time in August, and the kids set a new record for largest group to play in our studios. A total of 29 students split into 3 combos with mentors Riley Mulhelkar (trumpeter with the Westerlies, this Seattle native now lives in New York City), Sammy Miller (New York-based drummer who leads Sammy Miller and the Congregation), and Marina Albero (the Spanish pianist who's thrilled Seattle audiences upon her arrival in 2014). Each of the mentors stressed the importance of teamwork in jazz education, and these kids certainly got along well. Another point of mention to the students was to enjoy each moment you get to play, that seemed baked into the day with Seattle JazzED. Water resilience in Western Australia since European Colonisation

Exploring Environmental History

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 6, 2016 36:31

When European Settlers arrived in Western Australia they brought their own conceptions of water security and agriculture with them. Initially the land around what is now Perth was presented as a green and pleasant land. But the reality was very different. The water supply of south Western Australia fluctuates throughout the year and as a result, ground water resources and their demand rise and fall in response to prevailing patterns of rainfall. The flow of rivers varies according to the amount of rain the Westerlies bring to the region, leading past engineers to classify the region around Perth as a ‘hydraulically difficult country’. This tough reality complicates agricultural production in the region and turns Perth's suburban green spaces and gardens into a political hot potato. Add climate change into this already fraught mix, and it is expected that the current drying trend will contribute to further desiccate this already dry land. The title of a recent book about the water history of Western Australia, “Running out?”, seems to refer to this uncertain future. However, “Running out?” authored by Historian Ruth Morgan of Monash University in Melbourne, is by no means a story of doom and gloom. It argues that Western Australians have a strong sense of their vulnerability to water scarcity and climate variability and this has long fueled environmental anxieties. To understand these real or perceived perceptions of water vulnerability, Morgan’s book places those anxieties in their ever changing historical contexts. This edition of the podcast explores the history of these water anxieties with Ruth Morgan and asks the question - what lessons can be learned from the water history of Western Australia. The Westerlies are a new young brass ensemble based out of New York City. They’re an all-over-the-musical-map group whose first album is already garnering critical praise. And this first bit of success could have something to do with their Seattle roots. All four musicians, all in their 20s , grew up in Seattle where they absorbed much of the local music scene. They’re the product of two of the best high school jazz programs in the country: Garfield and Roosevelt high schools. And their debut album, recorded in a family friend’s cabin on Lopez Island, is a reinterpretation of an eclectic mix of compositions by Seattlelite Wayne Horvitz.
