Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Best-selling Author and Ultramarathoner to Visit Gwinnett County Library The memoir "Finding Gobi," recounting ultramarathoner Dion Leonard's remarkable bond with a stray dog named Gobi in the Gobi Desert, has become a global bestseller, published in 24 languages. Leonard and Gobi will appear at the Gwinnett County Library's Snellville Branch on December 9 at 11 a.m. The dog accompanied Leonard through challenging terrains during an ultramarathon, capturing hearts worldwide. Despite Gobi briefly going missing in China, Leonard's story of finding her garnered widespread online support. The inspirational tale has inspired a feature film currently in production in California, set for release in 2024 or 2025. A book signing will be part of the event. For more details, contact the Snellville Branch Public Library at 770-978-5154.   STORY 2: Buford Sonny's restaurant manager recognized for 'acts of kindness in her community' Sonny's BBQ celebrated Giving Tuesday by recognizing three employees dedicated to spreading kindness, including Dawn Jackson, a manager at the Buford restaurant. Jackson, named Kindness Officer, actively engages in local fundraisers, supports first responders, and aids the homeless by organizing donations with her team. As part of Sonny's Kindness Crew, Jackson could donate $2,500 to the charity of her choice, and she chose Random Acts, an organization inspiring kindness globally. Founded by actor Misha Collins in 2010, Random Acts supports various acts of kindness, aligning with Jackson's commitment to community goodwill. Notable winners included Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and “Can You Believe It?” for Best in Category, while Gold Awards were secured by various projects, including “Coffee with Calvin” and “Teaching Gwinnett Podcast: School Social Workers.” The awards celebrate the team's commitment to meaningful communication and community engagement. We'll be right back   Break 2: PEGGY SLAPPY – TOM WAGES – Glow Light Show   STORY 4: Proposed massive apartment development must restart rezoning process after number of apartments reduced A proposed 700-unit apartment development at Sardis Church Road and Hamilton Mill Road in north Gwinnett, which led to public backlash and legislative efforts to create a new city, has been temporarily derailed. The project's withdrawal from consideration mandates a restart of the rezoning process. Critics claimed the halving of proposed units required a fresh application. The development, adjacent to Seckinger High School, sparked community concerns about density and traffic. The setback may delay the proposal's return until February. House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and Sen. Clint Dixon praised the withdrawal, emphasizing the need to address overcrowding and traffic issues in the area.   STORY 5: Study uncovers professional and social stigma people with acne experience A recent study conducted in the U.S. reveals that individuals with acne, particularly those with darker skin tones and more severe cases, face significant social and professional stigma. The research, published in JAMA Dermatology, emphasizes the need to address stigmatizing attitudes and improve access to care for individuals with acne. The study found that participants were less inclined to be friends, have close contact, or share social media photos with individuals with severe acne, particularly if they had darker skin tones. The research underscores the importance of recognizing acne as a medical condition and ensuring access to appropriate treatment.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: ESOG - INGLES 2 – DTL   STORY 6: Gwinnett County bartender finalist in national Best Holiday Cocktail Contest Jay Ledbetter from Local Republic is a finalist in the Bar and Restaurant News Best Holiday Cocktail Contest, competing against national chain Eureka. Ledbetter's cocktail, the Tijuana Brass, features autumn spices and fresh herbs with tequila, creating a warm and flavorful drink. Described as a blend of savory, semi-sweet notes with rosemary and ginger, it aims to evoke holiday nostalgia. The contest, open for public voting until December 10, aims to identify the cocktail that best captures the holiday spirit. To vote for Ledbetter's Tijuana Brass, the public can visit the official contest website.   STORY 7: How much do people trust AI with their health? A survey of 2,000 US adults found that more Americans trust social media and health care websites for health advice over medical professionals, with 53% consulting healthcare websites and 46% relying on social media compared to 44% consulting their personal doctor. The survey, commissioned by UserTesting and conducted by OnePoll, also revealed that 73% believe they have a better understanding of their personal health than their doctor does. Moreover, 67% of Americans have looked up their symptoms on an internet search engine, and 52% have given a list of symptoms to a large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT for a diagnosis. Additionally, 94% of respondents own a personal smart device that can track health, and 78% are confident that AI and tech companies would protect their health information.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Lucja Leonard is a Dutch-born Aussie-Brit currently residing in the USA. Wife to Dion Leonard, and Fur-mama to Gobi and Lara, check out 'Finding Gobi' the NY Times bestselling book for more details on that side of her life.  Lucja is an ultra-runner but has not always been one! After becoming overweight in her early 20's Lucja took up running to become a healthier, fitter version of herself and after running her first road marathon, Amsterdam in 2010, she discovered a love of going long and went on to run the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon; a 6 stage, 7-day self-sufficient multistage ultra-marathon through the Kalahari desert in northern South Africa where she fell in love with ultra-running.  Lucja has since gone on to run a multitude of multistage and single stage ultras with the likes of Marathon Des Sables, Leadville 100, Ultra Trail Mont Blanc, Mohican 100 and even 200+miles non-stop with Bigfoot200 and Moab 240. Most recently she tackled the TransRockies Race, a multistage ultra in Colorado with her friend, Amanda, running as a pair with 120miles and 20,000ft over 6 days as 'Team Granny Pants' where they duo came third open female team. Lucja is also a running and health coach and can be found traveling all over the USA, exploring the most amazing places while working alongside her husband Dion, and his book 'Finding Gobi' with inspirational talks at corporate events, schools, libraries and running stores. Amanda Asher is a single mother of 3 teenagers (son 17 and twin daughters 15) and 2nd grade elementary school teacher who started ultra-running in 2016 when she tackled her first 50k in Huntsville, Tx – Rocky 50. Since that time, she has taken on dozens of races across Texas, ranging anywhere from 13 milers to 100k's. Shortly after completing her first 50k, Amanda ran her first mountain race in 2016 when she took on the Pikes Peak Ascent, followed by the Leadville Trail marathon in 2017. Most recently Amanda competed in her first team relay alongside her daughters as they raced the clock during a 12-hour relay at Spider Mountain in Texas. The 3 of them along with one additional teammate – placed 1st female team. Amanda used this race in May as a training run for her most recent endeavor that took place in Colorado – the Transrockies Stage Race – Amanda, alongside her teammate Lucja Leonard, managed to take the podium 4 out of the 6 days. Placing 3rd overall for the week. When Amanda is not busy raising her 3 teenagers or working on lesson plans for her second graders, she can be found solo backpacking all over the U.S., completing various sections of the CDT, John Muir Trail, AT, and hundreds of miles of loop trails, within Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona and Colorado.  It is always a fun time when Lucja is involved. We loved this conversation with Lucja and her adventure buddy, Amanda. These ladies tell us all about tackling the Transrockies stage race together and how they came up with their team's name, Granny Panties, it is a great story!  Amanda talks about finding balance with adventuring, raising three kids and work. When you hear her talk about it you will think it is possible for you too. Lucja shares her latest adventures and what she has coming up. These ladies are big supporters of each other and other women. I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did!

Finding Gobi is both Dion's memoire and the story of how a little dog from the Gobi desert ended up finding his way to a family in the UK. Dion talks about some difficult moments in his life like when his father died of an asthma attack when he was only 9 years old, and then how his mom told him that his dad was never really his dad. Despite a difficult start, Dion made a good life for himself and found the love of his life, Lucja. Although neither Dion nor his wife were runners when they met, they both became avid ultra-runners who love a challenge. One of these challenges brought Dion to China for a 155 mile multi-day stage race through the Gobi desert where he found a little dog which he later named Gobi… actually it was more like the dog found Dion and then followed him while he ran the race... Dion fell in love with this little dog but trying to bring him home to the UK would prove to be another adventure, one that ended up bringing people together from all around the world to help make it happen. Dion Leonard is an ultra marathon runner with many top 10 finishes in some of the world's toughest races including the Badwater 135. He also won races including the Kalahari Extreme 155 mile race, Delirious W.E.S.T. 200 miles and become the first male to run the Grand Slam of 100's (silver buckling in all races), and the gruesome Leadman Series in one year. The race that changed Dion's life forever was a 155 mile ultra-race in the Chinese Gobi Desert when a stray dog ran with him, forming an unbreakable bond that would become the ultimate challenge of overcoming adversity to achieving the unachievable. Lucja Leonard loves running, but hasn't always!  A Dutch-born, Aussie raised, British woman living in the USA with her husband & fellow ultra runner, Dion Leonard, and their 2 fur-kids Gobi & Lara life is anything but straight forward.  Overweight, unfit and unhappy Lucja turned her well-being and overall happiness around when she took up running in 2004 to try and lose some weight off her 216 pound, and growing, body.  Never much for sports growing up she was surprised to discover that she enjoyed the thrill of running and after running her first marathon in 2010 she started to wonder what more her body was capable of. In 2013 she ran her first ultra marathon as part of the Kalahari Extreme Marathon, a 250km race over 6 stages/7days through the Kalahari desert in South Africa where you have to carry all your kit and food to survive the entire week!  From here she was unstoppable having run a multitude of ultras around the world, the tougher and higher the DNF rate the more excited she gets about giving it a go.  Lucja's experience now includes epic races such as Leadville 100, Ultra Trail Mont Blanc 106 miles, Oman by UTMB, Marathon Des Sables and Transgrancanaria 125km to name just a few.  This year she takes on her biggest challenge to date by attempting to run the Triple Crown of 200 milers, Bigfoot 200, Tahoe 200 & Moab 240 over only a 9 week period in total! Ultra running has not just shaped Lucja's mind and body but it has changed both her and Dion's lives.  Dion was running a 250k/155mile multi stage race across the Gobi desert in China in 2016 when a stray dog started following him.  She would run nearly 80 miles with him and Dion and Lucja turned their lives upside down in the process of adopting her from China to the UK where they were living at the time.  You can read more about their true & inspiring story in the NY Times bestselling book 'Finding Gobi' which is also being made into a Hollywood film. Lucja lives her life fearless!  The bigger the challenge the better.  She went from overweight and unhappy to fit and having incredible adventures.  On this podcast Lucja talks about her very first epic ultra and subsequent struggles.  She also opens up about insecurities and how she has overcome them through positive self-talk.  Lucja tells us about her biggest challenge to date, the Triple Crown of 200 milers and raising money for the Pink Ribbon Foundation that supports breast cancer patients, which is a charity close to her heart.  We know you will walk away from this one as inspired as we were.  “Believe in yourself as others believe in you”. After years living with a new family, Sgt. Pepper who was thought stolen, is found. While a test of endurance for an ultramarathoner and a homeless pup ends in a match made in heaven for Gobi the Desert Dog and Dion Leonard. The Desert Dog I Couldn't Desert Ultramarathons are a grueling test of endurance, and those who run them tend to be masters of focus. So, when a scruffy little homeless dog joined Dion Leonard's Gobi Desert run, he tried to ignore her... and failed (miserably). Dion named the pup Gobi and took her home to Scotland. Along the way, their multiple adventures proved the ultimate test of endurance. Missing dog, found years later What if your dog went missing for 7 years, thought stolen and lost forever? Now imagine getting a phone call to be told that your furry best friend is alive and well and living more than 1000 miles from home? That is exactly what happened to one Florida woman. Life-changing chance encounters happen every day. Is it fate, coincidence, or the mysterious guiding hand of the Universe? Martha Teichner – When Harry Met Minnie The Union Square Greenmarket is the beating heart of the romance of New York City. A chance encounter there led to Martha Teichner meeting Harry the Bull Terrier. He turned out to be a love match for her Bullie, Minnie ... and his mother, Carol Fertig, dying from liver cancer, turned out to be a remarkable friend for Martha. Their story is a bracing, modern fairytale about how saying yes to life is revitalizing, even in death.  The Desert Dog I Couldn't Desert Ultramarathons are a grueling test of endurance, and those who run them tend to be masters of focus. So, when a scruffy little homeless dog joined Dion Leonard's Gobi Desert run, he tried to ignore her ... and failed (miserably). Dion named the pup Gobi and took her home to Scotland. Along the way, their multiple adventures proved the ultimate test of endurance. Dog Edition contributor Saskia Edwards presents their tale, a 101 Dog Stories winner. Our running book of the month for February 2021 is 'Finding Gobi' by Dion Leonard. Our Char and Jak invite Helen from Caincross UK to discuss the book and talk all things running with your dog. About the book: In 2016, Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultra marathon runner, unexpectedly stumbled across a little stray dog while competing in a gruelling 155 mile race across the Gobi Desert. The lovable pup, who earned the name `Gobi', proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the treacherous Tian Shan Mountains, managing to keep pace with him for nearly 80 miles. As Dion witnessed the incredible determination of this small animal, he felt something change within himself. In the past he had always focused on winning and being the best, but his goal now was simply to make sure that his new friend was safe, nourished and hydrated. Although Dion did not finish first, he felt he had won something far greater and promised to bring Gobi back to the UK for good to become a new addition to his family. This was the start of a journey neither of them would ever forget with a roller coaster ride of drama, grief, heartbreak, joy and love that changed their lives forever. Finding Gobi is the ultimate story of hope, of resilience and of friendship, proving once again, that dogs really are `man's best friend.' SUMMARY Craig Borlase, a New York Times and international bestselling author of more than 60 books, co-authors the unexpected worldwide bestselling memoir, "Finding Gobi: The Little Dog with a Very Big Heart." This true story features co-author and ultramarathoner Dion Leonard who crosses paths with a stray dog while racing 150 miles across the Gobi Desert in China. The dog he later names “Gobi” unexpectedly runs for miles alongside him in the scorching hot desert. Gobi’s instant loyalty and love win over Leonard, a hardened Aussie man, and eventually turns him into a tender-hearted advocate for dog adoption. Co-author Borlase, a prolific and renowned memoirist, specializes in crafting dramatic, engaging stories and has collaborated with a wide range of people all over the world. Some of these include a two-time Grammy-winning songwriter, an Iranian refugee who spent four months in a Turkish jail, a female transatlantic rower, a World War II veteran, and a former Muslim woman who was one week away from becoming a suicide bomber. Leonard praises Borlase’s attention to detail that turns a simple memory into something that makes us feel we were there. “Craig turned words into gold.” QUOTE FROM BORLASE “What makes a good story? Courage. A willingness to face pain, not hide. Saying 'yes' to all that's good in life. When you start here, the writing takes care of itself.” BUY Finding Gobi: A Little Dog with a Very Big Heart OR BUY Finding Gobi: Young Reader's Edition: The True Story of One Little Dog's Big Journey RECOMMENDATIONS BUY Stranger No More: A Muslim Refugee’s Story of Harrowing Escape, Miraculous Rescue, and the Quiet Call of Jesus BUY Becoming Mama: How I Found Hope in Haiti's Rubble Connect with us! This week we are chatting with Dion Leonard, ultrarunner and author of the New York Times bestseller "Finding Gobi". Dion has received a lot of press for his book which is " the heartwarming story of Gobi, a stray dog he found on a race across the eponymous desert" which is something you need to check out, but he is also an incredibly accomplished athlete who has taken on some of the hardest challenges in the sport of ultra running. He jumped all in on this sport by running a handful of Stage Races around the world including the Marathon Des Sables and the Gobi March. In 2018 he finished second place in the Triple Crown of 200s, all three of Candice Burt's remarkable two mile races. Then in 2019, after winning the Delirious 200 miler in Australia, he decided to up the ante by participating in the "Leadman" and the "Grand Slam of Ultrarunning in same summer. That means he raced every endurance event in Leadville (both running and mountain biking) plus four of the biggest 100 milers. That has to go down as two of the craziest years an athlete has had in ultra running! In this episode we get into all of those stories as we explore Dion's growth both mentally and emotionally through pushing his limits. What drives him? What makes him persevere? How have his experiences shaped him into who he now is? Excited to share this one and honored to get to talk with Dion! He is quite inspiring and after you listen to him you will feel like you can go out and take on the world! BONUS: With this being the 200th episode of the show I felt like we needed to have an appearance from our very first podcast guest, my buddy Brady Manriquez. So we added a Bonus segment instead of an Outro where Brady and I just chat about the show and what it's meant to me over the years. We also briefly discuss what we are doing to challenge ourselves this weekend now that the Booneville Backroads Ultra was rescheduled for September. The Sandwich Weekly podcast, covering local avtivities and events for the period May 17 through May 30. Here’s a little tidbit of Sandwich history thanks a podcast listener. You may, or may not, know that Sandwich was established around a planned railroad stop built on land given to the railroad by Almon Cage. Mr. Cage originally named the city Almon, but then decided to change the name to Newark Station. The railroad had only a flag stop at first, but when “Long John” Wentworth, a Congressman and future mayor of Chicago, got involved, then the railroad established a full stop in the town. At the time the name of the town was Newark Station and it became confused with it’s nearby southern neighbor, the town of Newark. Since Representative Wentworth had played a large role in convincing the railroad to have a full stop in the town, he was given the honor of naming the town. The Congressman selected the name Sandwich after the town of Sandwich New Hampshire in which he was raised. Interestingly, an ancestor of Wentworth, Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, established the town of Sandwich New Hampshire in 1763 naming it in honor of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, said to be the inventor of the sandwich. One of “Long John” Wentworth’s greatest, and often overlooked, accomplishments when he was a congressman, was to push for the border between Wisconsin and Illinois as it currently exists. There was a big push to have the Wisconsin border established at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, bringing the border to the southern edge of DeKalb county. This would have meant that Illinois would have no access to the lake, and Sandwich would lie in two states. If you have some little-known history about Sandwich, send it to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. I’ll read it on a future podcast and give you full bragging rights.   The Sandwich Weekly podcast, episode 2, activities and events from May 12 to May 23 Hello, this is the Sandwich Weekly podcast. I’m your host Robert and I’ve prepared a list of activities and events happening in and around Sandwich over the next two weeks. just a reminder that everything I mention in this podcast, as well as contact information, can be found in the show notes. You can view the show notes on your podcast player or on the web at sandwichweekly.com. Good news, the Sandwich Weekly podcast has been approved by Spotify. If you subscribe to Spotify you can listen to the podcast using the Spotify app or web player. Before I get to the event calendar I thought it would be fun to pass along a little-known historical fact about the city of Sandwich. Did you know that Bob Hope once headlined a benefit show at the Sandwich airport? The show was sponsored by Friends of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Aurora to raise funds to purchase a small plane for Father Tony Gendusa who was a missionary in New Guinea. The event also included a two-hour air show starring Jerrie Mack, the first woman to fly around the world solo in a single-engine plane. The show was emceed by WGN’s Eddie Hubbard. There were between 5,000 and 10,000 people in attendance that day. That’s pretty impressive when you find out that the date of the event was July 20, 1969 - the same day that the Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the moon. In fact, Bob Hope delayed his departure from Sandwich to watch the moon landing in the airport's administration building. If you have some little known historical facts about Sandwich, send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com and I’ll read them on an upcoming show (of course I’ll give you credit!) This is Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. Here is the news. Chinese officials and scientists have said that as a country with the world's largest number of scientific researchers, China is benefiting and will continue to benefit from scientific exchanges and cooperation with other G20 members, particularly in exchanges of talent and young research staff. A senior official of the China Science and Technology Exchange Center said the G20 is the largest and most important group in technological innovation worldwide. Cooperation and innovation under the G20 framework will not only benefit the members, but also is of great importance to the sustainable development of the world. According to the China Science and Technology Talent Development Report, which was released by the ministry last year, China's human resources in this area exceeded 71 million people as of 2013, ranking it No 1 in the world. Meanwhile, the latest statistics from the World Bank Group and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization showed that the research and development investment of 19 G20 members, excluding the European Union, accounts for 87 percent of the world total. The academic papers that these members publish account for 76 percent of the world total and applications for patents from these members account for 97 percent. This is Special English. Silk products are synonymous with Hangzhou, the capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province. Hangzhou first exported silk 2,000 years ago. Today, the exquisite craftsmanship of silk continues to be the source of justifiable pride. It should come as no surprise that guests at the B20 and G20 summits will find silk forming an integral part of their experience there. To symbolize the city's attachment to the fine material, a gift package for the B20 Summit guests contains a pure silk scarf. More than 800 participants at the B20 Summit received such scarves. Each of the silk scarves is printed and dyed around 20 times, and it takes six weeks for the process of platemaking, printing and dyeing to be completed. China played a major role in developing sericulture, or silk farming, and one of its origins is located in northern Zhejiang province. Archaeological digs there have unearthed silk thread, ribbons and silk from more than 4,000 years ago. After laboratory testing, they were confirmed to have come from domesticated silkworms. Globally, the Japanese use the most silk products, and French brands like Hermes use silk for signature products. Italy is a well-known center for silk goods, and Brazil is a large silk manufacturer. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. China's quantum communication satellite, which was launched in August, is in good shape; and scientific experiments can begin this month. A chief scientist of the project said all equipment carried by the satellite and all ground equipment are working well. Satellite-to-earth links have been established between the satellite and five ground stations across China, laying the technical foundation for distributing quantum keys. Scientists are confident that the project will fulfill its tasks. China successfully launched the world's first quantum satellite on Aug. 16. The satellite will explore "hack-proof" quantum communications by transmitting "unhackable" keys from space, and provide insight into the strangest phenomenon in quantum physics, quantum entanglement. This is Special English. The voyage taken by the research ship "Tan Suo Yi Hao" to the Marianas Trench from late June until Aug 12 made a series of breakthroughs in deep-sea scientific exploration, both domestically and internationally. According to scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the breakthroughs include a successful nitrogen cycle experiment conducted by the "on-site experiment" deep-sea elevator. The elevator is a research device that is lowered with an anchor and was developed by the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering of the academy. A scientist in the academy who headed the expedition said it made history among similar devices internationally. According to the scientist, the Tianya deep-sea lander, another device taken on the voyage, also made history. It collected deep-sea water samples of more than 100 liters for the first time, much more than its counterparts from other countries did. During the voyage, China's unmanned submarine, the Haidou, dived for the first time to a depth of more than 10,000 meters, reaching 10,767 meters. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. China will establish several national ecological experimental zones to explore reforms ranging from natural resource balance sheets to ecological performance evaluation of officials. An official guideline has been released by the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council, aiming at carrying out reforms on "ecological civilization system". According to targets set in the guideline, major progress shall be achieved by 2017; and fully-fledged ecological civilization systems shall be established by 2020, with best practices replicable across the country. Main experiments will include establishing a natural resource property right system, compiling natural resource balance sheet, optimizing land and space planning, and incorporating ecological performance into officials' evaluation. The provinces of Fujian, Jiangxi and Guizhou have been selected as the first batch of experimental zones, because they have "relatively optimal ecological foundation, and relatively strong environmental and resource capacity". This is Special English. Chinese universities will have the autonomy in transferring the intellectual property from scientific research and shall keep all the earnings. A government document released by the Ministries of education and science and technology, said no less than half of the net earnings from transfers shall be rewarded to researchers. The circular said major contributing researchers and faculty members should take no less than 50 percent of the total rewards. China has created a series of policies to encourage scientists to translate their research into commercial products. The State Council in March issued a regulation that provides detailed measures for academics and inventors on how to commercially exploit their work, as the country pushes for innovation-driven development. Authorities are also encouraging research institutions and technical personnel to transfer or licensing their achievements or to invest with them as trade-ins. According to the policies, performance in translating scientific outcomes to products will be considered in the overall evaluation of research and higher learning institutions. Tsinghua University and Peking University have for the first time broken through the top 100 global ranking of universities. According to the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities released recently, Tsinghua occupies the 58th spot and Peking University is at 71. A total of 41 Chinese mainland universities are among the top 500, nine more than in 2015. Starting from 2003, Academic Ranking of World Universities has been presenting the world top 500 universities annually based on transparent methodology and third-party data. More than 1,200 universities are included every year. Harvard University retains its crown for the 14th year, followed by Stanford, University of California Berkeley, University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Tokyo University in Japan is ranked 20 this year, the sole Asian university to be among top 20 in worldwide. This is Special English. Quarantine dogs were first employed in the Nanjing airport in 2002, after their implementation in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai. After training for four months, quarantine dog Daxiong started work in 2009. Daxiong was good at sniffing out plant products, and its biggest discovery was 17 boxes of forbidden fruit totaling 180 kilograms. At nine years old, Daxiong is the equivalent in dog years to a 60-year-old man, but he is nevertheless as excitable as ever when it comes to food. Daxiong is so sensitive to forbidden goods, especially meat products and fruit, that his trainer rewards his good behavior with snacks. Quarantine dogs usually work three to four hours a day, taking a rest every half an hour. This keeps them alert and accurate. From 2014, the department began to seek an adopter for Daxiong in preparation for his retirement. His trainer Yan Han explaines that the adopting family had to love dogs and have some experience raising them. Additionally, Yan hoped that the whole family would get on well with the dog. By this metric, a local resident surnamed Zhi became Daxiong's adopter. To prove that Daxiong is living a happy and healthy life with his new family, Zhi provides periodic photos and videos to the dog's former handlers. This is Special English. A new technical manual in Shandong province encourages the use of humane methods to slaughter chickens. Supporters say the methods also promote better meat quality. The manual was prepared by a research team at Qingdao Agricultural University and has been approved by the Shandong provincial government's quality watchdog. It sets standards to reduce the animals' suffering. A professor of food science at the university says that complying with the humane slaughter manual is not only about showing human compassion for the animal but also could improve the quality of the meat. The standards "ensure that suffering at slaughter can be avoided so the animals experience minimal negative feelings. Shandong Province raises 20 percent of China's broiler chickens, and chicken accounts for 40 percent of the province's meat production. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. An Australian who raised enough money to take a stray dog that followed him during an extreme marathon in China back to his home in the UK was almost heartbroken. Gobi, who accompanied Dion Leonard during the event in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, had disappeared and for quite some time, there was no sign of her. Leonard had raised enough to take the animal back to Edinburgh in Scotland. He said it was such a shock and hard to believe when he was told Gobi had gone missing. Leonard said he was very heartbroken and saddened about it. He returned to Urumqi, the regional capital of Xinjiang, to look for the small brown animal. Forty-one-year-old Leonard said he and Gobi formed such a strong bond during the 250-km race, and it broke his heart thinking that they might not be spending more time together. These remarks came after a couple of days of searching for Gobi with volunteers. During this time, there have been sightings of dogs that look like Gobi, but all these signs have ended in disappointment. The dog had been due to arrive in Beijing to start a four-month process of medical checks before being flown to the UK in time for Christmas. Gobi ran alongside Leonard in June during the Gobi March, a 7-day race across mountainous and desert terrain in Hami prefecture, when temperatures of up to 52 degrees Celsius were recorded. They even cuddled together during the night. At one point, Leonard had to cross a river during the race. Instead of thinking about beating others, he stopped and carried Gobi across. After the race, Leonard decided to take her home to Scotland. (全文见周日微信。)
