In the 1930s, a beautiful forest in northeast Pennsylvania was set to become a national park. Which made sense. The area was special, even to those that purchased the land to timber it.In a time when forests across the Commonwealth were being clear cut to feed the growing nation of raw materials, this forest received some reprieve. As a result, 300-year-old trees were allowed to continue to grow – providing the forest with mature trees and the viewing public with examples of ancient forests. These magnificent trees stood 100-feet tall with diameters of almost four feet. But between these arboreal giants hid a collection of natural wonders found nowhere else in Pennsylvania. Two creek branches cut through deep gorges creating a series of unbelievable waterfalls. These waterfalls united and flowed through a glen among massive pines, hemlocks and oaks. Unfortunately, World War II brought an end to the plan to make it a national park. However, thousands of acres were purchased in the 1940s to preserve this incredible landscape and its otherworldly glens. In 1969, the glens became a registered National Natural Landmark and was later made a State Park Natural Area in 1993. We now know this property as Ricketts Glen State Park. Ricketts Glen reminds me of a quote I once heard. "And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul." That's how many feel when they visit this special place. That is, if the park isn't filled with other people trying to do the same thing. On this episode, I speak with Scott Wilson. Scott is the manager of the Ricketts Glen State Park. Welcome to a Leader Fluent Podcast Series based on my book, Insanely Practical Leadership: 12 No-Nonsense Keys to Master the Art of Leading Yourself and Others. For the next few podcast episodes, I'll be sharing teaching from the Masterclass for the book. It's a great way to get a taste of what's in the book, and the insanely practical skills you'll develop. You can learn more about Insanely Practical Leadership and the bonus content that goes with the book HERE. Personal and professional growth help you become the person, and the leader, God intended for you to become. As a leader, you are responsible to own your growth. You can't delegate it or negotiate it. You can't relegate it or vacate it. In fact, authors Ken Blanchard and Mark Miller said it like this: “Growth for leaders is the treasure that funds the future journey. Stop finding the treasure along the way and the journey ends.” As a leader, you have a dream burning in your gut. But between you and your dream is a gap—a growth gap. And the only way to close that gap is to fund the journey toward your dream with the treasure of your growth. That happens when you get insanely practical about three keys: a growth mindset, a growth plan, and a growth team. 1. Adopt a Growth Mindset In the Gospel of Luke chapter 2 verse 52, it says, “Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.” Notice, Jesus' growth was intentional and continual. He didn't think about growing—He grew. And He wasn't haphazard about growing—He grew mentally, physically, spiritually, and socially. Without an intentional and continual growth mindset, we'll view growth as nothing more than a one-time event. Events such as conferences and seminars are great at inspiring change, but the change doesn't actually happen at the event. A process of growth must follow the event which then produces long-term habits of transformation. Simply put, events inspire change, process creates change, and habits sustain change. And it all starts with a growth mindset. 2. Create a Growth Plan I've developed a growth planning model that I call “Growth TRAC”—T-R-A-C. A Growth TRAC is a specific, measurable, and accountable plan for personal and professional growth. Each letter in the word “TRAC” stands for a word, and each word is accompanied by a question to help you create your own Growth TRAC. Let's unpack it. The letter “T” in “TRAC” stands for Target, and the question is, “What are My Growth Goals?” Your growth goal is the target you're aiming to hit. The letter “R” stands for Roadmap, and the question is, “How Do I Plan to Grow?” Your roadmap to reach your target is typically made up of things like training, resources, coaching, and experiences. The letter “A” stands for Accountability, and the question is, “Who Will Hold Me Accountable for My Growth?” None of us are good enough to reach our growth goals alone. That's why we need friends and mentors in our lives to ask us questions and hold us accountable to grow. And finally, the letter “C” stands for Check-Up. The question is, “When and How Will I Evaluate My Growth Progress?” When you conduct regular check-ups on your growth progress, you're able to make mid-course corrections to help you reach your growth goals. A Growth TRAC includes a Target, a Roadmap, Accountability, and Check-Ups. And when you follow your TRAC, it helps you intentionally grow. 3. Assemble a Growth Team Several years ago, Scott Wilson introduced me to the idea of a growth team. A growth team is a group of people who help you grow in the most important areas of your life. For example, if you're married, your spouse will help you grow in your relationship with your family. But your growth team doesn't end there. Prayer partners help us grow spiritually. Counselors help us grow emotionally. Coaches help us grow professionally, and financial advisors help us steward money wisely.

Title: Languaging in Hampton Roads Episode 6: Creative Community: Spoken Word in Hampton Roads Hosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue Salasky Date: June 30, 2024 Length: 35:59 minutes In this sixth episode of our podcast, languagingHR, we explore the world of spoken word poetry in Hampton Roads. To understand when spoken word poetry is and its nuances, we interviewed three local poets, Tanya Cunningham, George Mendez, and Lacroy Nixon. We asked them questions such as: What is spoken word poetry?, How do you connect with your audience?, What do you love about the art form?, and What is SLAM poetry? Each of the poets perform one of their pieces during this episode. Tanya performs “Bread,” George performs, “The Nature of Things,” and Lacroy performs “Play by Play.” Spoken word poetry is the performance of original poetry in a spoken word community and sometime for competition. Poems are usually personal in nature and the performance of them is essential to the art form. The poets that we interviewed come to poetry with their unique perspectives and backgrounds. George, who had his own hip-hop label in his teens, came to spoken word poetry through writing at a young age and journeying through music to the spoken word format. He had been the host of the open mic at The Venue on 35th Street for many years and is now artist-in-residence there. Lacroy was encouraged to write by a high school teacher after she asked if she could read his work to the class. He had been focusing on mechanical engineering at that time and went on to compete in a national NAACP competition in the categories of poetry and, yes, mechanical engineering. Lacroy started and runs the nonprofit SLAM Connection in Williamsburg, which combines spoken word poetry events and workshops with service to the community. He is also a competing member of the SLAM team Verbbenders. Tanya Cunningham was a writer early on and later took a creative writing class with Dr. Hollis Pruitt at Tidewater Community College. For the final project, the students read their work aloud. Dr. Pruitt invited guests to that reading and one of those guests was poet Ann Shalaski. Tanya kept reading at open mics to continue the connection with community that was fostered during that class. Tanya is co-editor with J. Scott Wilson of 757 Perspectives, an anthology of local poetry. Although this podcast focused on more general language themes such as audience and language community, we did learn some new terms. We highlighted three of those during the episode: scheming, or the use of an underlying theme to foreground story; deep pockets, which is a term for a spoken word poet that has a number of poems (at least eight!) ready to perform at any time; and finally, the term calibration poet, which describes the poet that goes first in a SLAM competition. Note: We referred to Joshua Bennett's book Spoken Word: A Cultural History. Throughout this ten-part series, scientists, lawyers, advocates, and product producers all weighed in on our worldwide PFAS problem. While, yes, we have come a long way in understanding the scope of the issue and began moving away from PFAS, at least in the outdoor industry, many questions still remain. One of the primary questions is, what should we do with all the old PFAS already in the environment? This is a special episode from our show “Engineering Founders” - Jon Perl & Scott Wilson share the origin story of QA Wolf & deconstruct their best practices (and what to avoid) for early-stage cold outreach, how to add value to your cold email communications, and why experimenting with your cold outreach is important to early sales! We also dive in to the story behind QA Wolf's strategic move to incorporate services into their business strategy & tangible ways to add accountability measures that will help drive growth in the early days of your company. Check out Engineering Founders - https://hubs.la/Q02tq5ym0ABOUT JON PERLJon Perl is the co-founder and CEO of QA Wolf, a startup building the QA solution every engineering leader wishes for. Prior to QA Wolf, Perl led engineering teams in the healthcare and home services space, where he learned firsthand how difficult automated regression testing can be — and how critical it is for teams to have. His interest in software engineering comes from an overarching desire to eliminate boring, repetitive tasks and give people their time back. He has a dog named Finn and enjoys hiking."Your goal is simply to book a meeting. You're not trying to close a deal through one email. It's like, 'How can I just get on the phone with somebody?' That's the goal.”- Jon Perl ABOUT SCOTT WILSONAs co-founder and head of growth at QA Wolf, Scott Wilson is trying to upend 20+ years of stagnation in the QA industry. Before this he launched the marketing efforts at Wyze and helped acquire 6 million paying customers. If he's not working, you might find him backpacking with Frank the dog, or learning a new illusion."It's not referencing the weather in Seattle or that you got promoted. Personalization is being contextually relevant to the person. This is how your mind should be thinking. It's like, 'I saw you're a hundred person company with nine engineers on your team and no QA engineers. Here at Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we've had the privilege of engaging in conversations that are not just thought-provoking, but also deeply impactful. On this episode, we sit down with Scott Wilson, the passionate co-founder of American Wild Horse Conservation, to discuss a topic close to both our hearts: the plight of America's wild horses and the ongoing efforts to preserve and protect these magnificent creatures. Scott Wilson is a renowned Colorado Nature Photographer and Communications Leader, whose journey took an unexpected turn when he discovered the plight of America's wild horses. Scott became captivated by the freedom and majesty of the wild horses roaming the western United States. His realization that these iconic animals were facing threats to their survival inspired him to take action and co-found American Wild Horse Conservation. This non-profit organization is dedicated to preserving and protecting wild horses, which have played a pivotal role in the nation's history and ecology. This captivating conversation illuminates the plight of these majestic creatures, and the tireless efforts to secure their freedom and ensure their survival. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Scott Wilson on the Historical Tapestry of America's Wild Horses The history of wild horses in the United States is as rich and complex as the country itself. Scott Wilson shares that there are approximately 65,000 wild horses roaming free across ten states in the western United States. It's also a little-known fact that all the world's horses have their origins in North America, and they were reintroduced in the 1500s. These animals are not just a part of the natural ecology but are woven into the very tapestry of our nation's history. In 1971, the Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act was a promise made to these animals—a promise that we are duty-bound to uphold. As we delved into the significance of wild horses, it became clear that they are not just symbols of the wild but are key players in the ecological balance of our public lands. Wild Blue Roan by Scott Wilson of the American Wild Horse Conservation Scott Wilson on the Struggle for Space and Survival Given these facts, it was unsettling to learn that wild horses are allocated a mere 2% of public lands. Contrary to popular belief, these horses are not in competition for building or economic development. In fact, only 1% of the nation's beef is produced on these lands, debunking the myth that wild horses pose a significant threat to our economy. However, the challenges they face are real and pressing. Competition with livestock, encroachment by oil and gas businesses, and government policies that often do more harm than good are just a few of the hurdles wild horses must overcome to survive. Wild Pinto Stallion Picasso by Scott Wilson of the American Wild Horse Conservation Nevada: The Heartland of Wild Horses It's a surprising fact that roughly half of the wild horse population in the US is concentrated in Nevada. This distribution has significant implications for conservation efforts and the management of these animals. That being said, Scott Wilson's initiative to buy back land and expand the habitat for wild horses is a beacon of hope. The acquisition of 3500 acres in Nevada and the establishment of a land trust are steps toward ensuring that wild horses and other wildlife can coexist peacefully. PFAS are a large class of chemicals that have been used since the late 1930s. What makes them particularly hazardous is that they are persistent and difficult to break down. That means all the PFAS that have even been created still exist today. In the first episode of this ten-part series, we learned the history of how PFAS was created. In episode two, we get a better understanding of just how dangerous PFAS chemicals are and how a series of lawsuits brought these health hazards to light. In the first episode of this ten-part series, we explore where PFAS came from and how it became a prevalent part of our consumer products. While the innovation of this class of chemicals has been astoundingly effective in applications like firefighting foams, waterproof rain jackets, and Teflon pans, our appetite for convenience created a toxic chemistry we may have to live with forever. In the next episode of Forever Chemicals, we dive deeper into how the controversy surrounding PFAS grew into a global health crisis and how it has persisted in manufacturing to this day.
