The Atlantic's David Frum returns to discuss Donald Trump's second term one year in. From making $1-4 billion through family enrichment and foreign deals (including Abu Dhabi investments tied to national security favors), to unprecedented corruption on a scale never seen in American history, Frum argues Trump has turned the presidency into a personal ATM — dwarfing petty scandals like Hunter Biden's.We dive into why corruption is an underrated story, the collapse of checks and balances, Supreme Court impunity, tariff-driven price hikes, the Epstein fallout shattering Trump's myth for some supporters, ICE controversies including the Minneapolis shootings, cracks in Trump's coalition (from Thomas Massie to far-right figures), JD Vance's risky plays, Kamala Harris's future, and threats to 2026/2028 elections via voter intimidation.Frum warns of kleptocracy risks, national security betrayals, and why Trump's betrayal of core conservative values (like guns) could be fatal to his movement. And that's just for starters. This is a must-listen for anyone tracking Trump's impact on democracy.Subscribe to Matt Lewis on Substack: https://mattklewis.substack.com/Support Matt Lewis at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mattlewisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MattLewisDCTwitter: https://twitter.com/mattklewisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattlewisreels/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVhSMpjOzydlnxm5TDcYn0A– Who is Matt Lewis? –Matt K. In this raw, must-watch conversation, former GOP Rep. Joe Walsh joins Matt Lewis to unpack the growing backlash against Trump's second term. They discuss: — The stunning Democratic upset in Texas Senate District 9 (a 31+ point swing from Trump's 2024 margin in a red stronghold) — Why shocking videos of masked ICE agents dragging people from streets/parking lots/Home Depot are turning public opinion (even among non-political Americans) — How tariffs and economic pain are eroding Trump's "secret sauce" Epstein files secrecy fueling distrust, GOP cracks (Massie, Rand Paul pushing back), and why images are more powerful than words in shifting opinion — Walsh's Warning: Trump may try to interfere with 2026 midterms – don't underestimate authoritarian moves — Plus lighter moments on Eagles fandom and calls for prayers over Savannah Guthrie's missing mom in Arizona Walsh (a former Trump voter turned fierce critic) and Lewis (original Never Trumper) argue Democrats could retake the House in a "blue tsunami" driven by Trump's overreach – but must build a real vision for 2028.Subscribe to Matt Lewis on Substack: https://mattklewis.substack.com/Support Matt Lewis at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mattlewisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MattLewisDCTwitter: https://twitter.com/mattklewisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattlewisreels/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVhSMpjOzydlnxm5TDcYn0A– Who is Matt Lewis? –Matt K. How could England be ruled when the king was just a baby? When Henry VI came to the throne at nine months old, the hunger for power among his Plantagenet uncles spilled into violence. 600 years ago, in February 1426, parliament even moved to Leicester to avoid mob violence in London. Even so, MPs armed themselves with wooden bats and clubs. We dive deep into Tucker's early days as a sharp, contrarian writer at The Weekly Standard, his pivot at the Daily Caller for traffic over facts, the lessons from Breitbart, his rise at Fox News, and how he mastered anti-liberal outrage to influence policy and the right's direction. Then, author Daniel Flynn discusses 'The Man Who Invented Conservatism: The Unlikely Life of Frank S. Assassin's Creed Dynasty provides a vivid recreation of China as it was 1300 years ago, during the reign of the Tang Dynasty. The story focuses on a pivotal moment for the emperors, when a huge rebellion plunged the empire into a civil war that took nearly a decade - and the brutal deaths of millions - to end.Yet despite this turbulence, the Tang Dynasty is often thought to have ruled over a golden age in Chinese history, characterised by peace, stability and the peak of ancient art.To make sense of this apparent contradiction, Matt Lewis welcomes back Dr Jeremiah Jenne, host of the Barbarians at the Gate history podcast, and the historical travel podcast, By Their Own Compass. In this powerful discussion, Jonathan Taplin (author of Move Fast and Break Things and The End of Reality) talks about his new essay for Rolling Stone. Taplin argues that healing America's broken spirit requires a new counterculture — rooted in physical scenes, liberal arts revival, and bold artistic resistance — before political reform can happen. From Bowie at the Berlin Wall to Paul Thomas Anderson's 'One Battle After Another,' he explores how culture has historically triumphed over repression... and whether it can again. Is this the end of the American creative spirit, or the dawn of a new renaissance? Watch/read along and decide. What happens when political labels lose their meaning and institutions begin to forfeit public trust? Corey is joined by Matt Lewis to reflect on how American politics arrived at its current moment and why many of the warnings raised a decade ago now feel unavoidable. The conversation coincides with the ten year anniversary of Matt's book Too Dumb to Fail, which examined the rise of populism, intellectual decay, and the erosion of conservative principles long before Trump reshaped the political landscape. Corey and Matt discuss how conservatism has been reduced less to a philosophy than a posture, why grievance has replaced governing vision, and how former ideological opponents increasingly find themselves aligned around the defense of democratic norms. They explore the shift from the early blogosphere to today's media environment, where platforms like Substack and YouTube have reopened space for longer form thinking and sustained dialogue. The episode also examines institutional credibility in an age of selective outrage. From Christianity to law enforcement, Matt argues that Trump's politics do not merely divide but actively corrode public trust, reshaping how Americans interpret power, legitimacy, and state authority. The conversation closes with reflections on elections, incentives, and the unglamorous discipline required to write and think clearly in public. Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry reminds us of an often overlooked turning point in history: the Haitian Revolution, when the slaves of Haiti overthrew their masters and the might of the French, British and Spanish militaries to create their own state. But this remarkable achievement was overshadowed by the American and French Revolutions, and has traditionally been viewed as just a byproduct of those famous rebellions. When did the Haitian Revolution take place? How did the slaves defeat both Napoleon's army and the British Empire? How did pirates influence the course of Haiti's history? To learn more about what Haiti was like in the 18th century, and the key people and moments of the Haitian Revolution, Matt Lewis is joined by Dr Erica Johnson, author of Philanthropy and Race in the Haitian Revolution, and contributor to the Universities Studying Slavery consortium, a huge research project to uncover and understand the links of US universities' history with slavery.Listen to how the American Revolution and French Revolution started with the Battles of Lexington & Concord and the Storming of the Bastille.Echoes of History is a Ubisoft podcast, brought to you by History Hit. Dive into the latest episode of The DMZ with Matt Lewis and Bill Scher, breaking down Donald Trump's bold foreign policy moves in 2026. From the dramatic arrest of Maduro in Venezuela and claims of U.S. oil interests, to Trump's persistent Greenland ambitions and comparisons to Teddy Roosevelt's imperialism – is this a coherent "Donroe Doctrine" or ego-driven adventurism? We explore the through lines: spheres of influence, interventionism beyond the Western Hemisphere (like bombing Iran), and the risks of resurrecting great-power conflicts. Plus, insider analysis on Marco Rubio's rising influence as Secretary of State, his potential motivations tied to Cuba, and how Venezuela is shaking up the 2028 GOP race against JD Vance.Bill draws historical parallels to Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and the post-WWII order, warning of long-term instability. Could Trump's "points on the board" make him historically great – or lead to disaster?

Among the many cool characters from the Viking Age that are brought to life in Assassin's Creed Valhalla is Alfred the Great. Before his military success against the vikings, Alfred also boasts one of the all-time great comeback stories. In January 878 all looked lost: Alfred was hiding in marshlands, his army defeated and scattered, and the Vikings controlled his kingdom. The key event that almost saw the end of Anglo-Saxon England was the Battle of Chippenham.Assassin's Creed Valhalla recreates the battle and puts players in the heart of combat. But what do we really know about the battle? How big was a viking army? What did the Anglo-Saxons count as a 'real' battle? To help answer these questions, Matt Lewis is joined by Professor Ryan Lavelle from the University of Winchester. In addition to writing Alfred's Wars: Sources and Interpretations of Anglo-Saxon Warfare in the Viking Age, he consulted on Assassin's Creed Valhalla.Echoes of History is a Ubisoft podcast, brought to you by History Hit. Once the powerhouse of the Anglo-Saxon world, the kingdom of Mercia dominated not just Wessex but nearly all its neighbouring realms. At its height, Mercia held sway over regions that include modern Birmingham and even London. Though the kingdom eventually faded with the rise of Alfred the Great, its story—and its influence—were far from over.In this episode, Matt Lewis sits down with historian Annie Whitehead to uncover the enduring legacy of the Mercians. From the fierce warrior-king Penda, to the empire-building Offa, to the legendary Lady Godiva, the people of Mercia helped shape the foundations of the English nation in ways both dramatic and surprising.MORERise of WessexListen on AppleListen on SpotifyWhy The Early Middle Ages MatterListen on AppleListen on SpotifyGone Medieval is presented by Matt Lewis, edited by Ella Blaxill and Amy Haddow and produced by Rob Weinberg. Book a call with Command Your Brand: https://commandyourbrand.com/book-a-callThis episode explores a significant "historical scandal" involving "english kings" and the "royal family." We examine the account of a "secret marriage" that predates King Edward's union with Elizabeth Woodville, making his subsequent marriage bigamous. This pivotal event in "history" significantly impacted the succession and reputation of "Richard III" and "Edward IV."Our guest today is Matt Lewis from Gone Medieval on History Hit.
When Portuguese merchants ran aground on the Japanese isle of Tanegashima in 1543, two worlds collided - Europeans encountered Japan for the first time. For the next 50 years, Portuguese and their partners flooded into this newly discovered land aiming to spread the power of the Christian Church and sell wares that could revolutionise Japan, like the powerful gun. But in the fiery cauldron of Sengoku Japan, Portuguese missionaries were but one player in the most bloody and brutal of political games.Assassin's Creed Shadows delves into the tensions at the heart of this culture clash. Did Buddhist and Shinto Japanese accept Christianity? Why did the Japanese see Europeans as barbaric? Were Japanese warlords like Oda Nobunaga exploited by Western traders and church leaders, or were the Europeans unwittingly being exploited by the Japanese?Matt Lewis and Prof. Frederik Cryns, historical advisor on the hit TV show Shogun, uncover how Europeans fit into 16th century Japan's patchwork of daimyos and the momentous impact they had on feudal Japanese warfare and society. This episode was first published on 20th May 2024. The heart of the Assassin's Creed franchise is the deadly rivalry between the brotherhoods of Assassins and Templars. These were real groups in history, whose power and influence in their lifetimes matched the longevity of their reputations. Later, Mike breaks down the exploding sports-betting scandals in baseball and the NBA, how prop bets make cheating easier to spot, and why league integrity hinges on catching every idiot who thinks he can game the system.
