A few thoughts on the Beth Moore/John MacArthur ConversationIf you don’t know what I’m referencing you can skip this one! I hate to call out names, and the thought to “turn the other cheek” was on the forefront of my mind, but I think when names are mentioned and good people are villainized then we might have a responsibility to weigh in. The core of my argument here is the method used to disagree with a public figure is at fault. I understand that my argument is in danger of my own argument (haha), but I feel that this is necessary considering the unfolding context. As always, I welcome your thoughts!
Let’s be honest, sometimes life sucks and yet we still have to get up Sunday after Sunday and keep leading people into God’s presence. How do we do that when our affections are far from God because of circumstances out of our control? Can rehearsal be an act of spiritual worship? There’s an amazing passage in the old testament that has really unlocked the value of setting time apart to make sure I am set apart; both in the physical and the spiritual. God actually rejects worship.Genesis 4The spirit of Cain: ”Not wanting anyone else to succeed around us and is intimidated by the success of others.”Amos 5: 21-24“I hate, I despise and reject your [sacred] feasts,And I do not take delight in your solemn assemblies. “Even though you offer Me your burnt offerings and your grain offerings,I will not accept them; And I will not even look at the peace offerings of your fattened animals.“Take the noise of your songs away from Me [they are an irritation]!I shall not even listen to the melody of your harps.“But let justice run down like watersAnd righteousness like an ever-flowing stream [flowing abundantly].When worship is not bent out in compassion, God rejects it.Worship is an outward expression of the inward reality of our heart.“Worship leaders, KNOW YOUR BIBLE, KNOW the heart of God. Our worship should be changing us so radically, that we cannot NOT be the Church in our cities. It HAS to change us.” -TMAre we wiling to step out first into the raging waters of chaos? SO THAT we might bring heaven to earth. We are postured to be the first to effect change.“Let’s stop being the Church in the church and start being the Church in the world.” -TMMicah 6:6-8With what shall I come before the Lord [to honor Him]And bow myself before God on high?Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings,With yearling calves? Will the Lord be delighted with thousands of rams,Or with ten thousand rivers of oil?Shall I present my firstborn for my acts of rebellion,The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of youExcept to be just, and to love [and to diligently practice] kindness (compassion),And to walk humbly with your God [setting aside any overblown sense of importance or self-righteousness]?Spirit and truth worship calls us to this: DO justice, LOVE kindness, WALK humbly. Spirit and truth worship call us to bring heaven to earth, by way of compassion. ACTS of compassion.
EPISODE NOTESRomans 12 is possibly one of the most quoted passages in the Bible about worship and yet is steeped in Old Covenant realities that we gloss over with almost every reading. In this episode we will discuss its origins and huge implications for our lives as worshipers and leaders of worship cultures!
How you respond to failure will be a defining characteristic for the leader you become. Failure has the potential to thrust you into new dimensions of leadership and calling. It is the great catalyst for God to move us upon the trajectory He has for us. Hear Tyson share with his creative team at Shoreline Church in this episode.
EPISODE NOTESWith the same obviousness that drunkenness shows on a person, is the type of obviousness Paul is saying for the Spirit of God to be evident in our lives.“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”Ephesians 5:15-21Declare the truths of your worship to one another before you declare them to the church. “If these songs are not effecting us, changing us, allowing us to lead each other on the team, then what business do we have doing them for the Church?” -TM“For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged [b]sword, penetrating as far as the division of the [c]soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.”Hebrews 4:12DEFINITIONS: PSALM: lyrics taken straight from ScriptureHYMN: biblical doctrine put to melody*Philippians 2 & Colossians 1 are a biblical hymns that Paul sings in ScriptureSPIRITUAL SONG: our culture’s song that uses biblical principles to strengthen and encourage the Church
Episode Notes:“I want my worship to be intentionally and fully expressive to the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.” -TMFather:Reverence for HimSacrificial acknowledgement to HimHonoring His majesty and glorySON:The cross and its implicationsThe victory of the resurrectionGive in sacrificial worship and Stand in Jesus’ victorySPIRIT:The Spirit has to be evident in our worship1 Corinthians 14 - Spirit, in worship, unveils the heart and heals with graceJesus was ALIVE, our worship should be ALIVE.
Episode Notes:Unity is so essential to what we do as the Church, but it's not talked about enough.Could the lack of understanding on the "UNITY" principle be affecting God's blessing on our teams?Unity is this interesting thing that if you strive for it too hard, then you can actually push people away.Creative wear their hearts on our sleeves, and can tend to be disunified by the inability to sort through conflict.Psalm 133 Behold, how good and pleasant it iswhen brothers dwell in unity![a]2 It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard,on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!3 It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.“I’ve noticed people can actually perceive when your team is disunified. Especially Christians who have the spirit of God who’ve come together to join because of the yearning they have in their own spirit, they can sense the disunity of the team in the spiritual realm. Something seems off.” - TMNo matter how amazing your band is. ;)When people are able to step into authority of anointing, it gives them something bigger than themselves to strive for unity for. Unity is no longer a nice idea, it’s a mission.Unity BENT out in grace and love and mission as an overwhelming presence in our teams and churches and families. It’s THERE that God commands the blessing. Life forevermore.
Episode Notes:Have you ever heard someone say, “They’re so anointed,”?Maybe it’s been said of you. But what does it actually mean?Definition of Anointing:To be set apart. To be “anointed” for a specific office, purpose.Jesus the Messiah was “anointed” for the task of Savior.Anointing has nothing to do with with how good or qualified one is in their skill, but rather what they’ve been set apart to accomplish. Purpose. Mission. Jesus sets up “anointing” like this: LUKE 4And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,because he has anointed meto proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captivesand recovering of sight to the blind,to set at liberty those who are oppressed,to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”“Don’t pass up someone who’s ready to lay down their life for the sake of the Gospel because we’ve confused the definition of anointing and we’re looking for someone who can hit that note on that song.” - TM
Regulative Principle of Worship:“The acceptable way of worshipping the true God is instituted by Himself and so limited by His own revealed will that He may not be worshipped according to the imaginations and devices of men or the suggestions of Satan under any visible representation or any other way not prescribed in Holy Scripture.”Cumulative Principle of Worship:”Any way we see worship expressed through Scripture is available to us in our private and public demonstrations of worship.”Examples of Each:- These are the things I CAN’T do because I don’t see them in the Bible (Regulative Principle)- These are the things I CAN do, because I see them in the Bible. (Cumulative Principle)The Cumulative Principle allows us to look through the Bible and examples of worship, and get an idea of what God sees as pleasing acceptable worship. It’s less about what we CANNOT do in worship, and more about what is good, true, pleasing, pure, lovely, and acceptable unto God. (Philippians 4:8)
Matthew 5:23-24 —"So if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and while there you remember that your brother has something [such as a grievance or legitimate complaint] against you, leave your offering there at the altar and go. First make peace with your brother, and then come and present your offering."When there are passages that are dealing specifically with worship, we should read them, process them, debate about them, and really try to thoroughly figure out what it's trying to communicate to us. So how literally do we take this verse??“I take it pretty literally. When I remember, when the Lord reminds me, as quickly as possible, I step towards reconciliation. I grab my phone or approach the person, apologize and ask if we can have a conversation.”This passage is less about a rule and more about a HEART POSTURE. The posture of your heart, a spirit of offense, can block you from receiving what God has for you in this season. Heart Posture Check and Balance: Are you bending grace out to others often? Are you asking for forgiveness often?
“What is the New Covenant and what does it have to do with worship?”Covenant = PromiseOld Covenant = Law”Showed us our need for something outside of ourselves to save us. Showed us our need for a Savior.” (Romans 6-8)New Covenant = Jesus”Put your faith and trust in Jesus, and HE makes you right with God.”Culture = The place where things growAre we building good healthy cultures or bad toxic cultures?
Not everything that was FOR the Levitical Priesthood is NORMATIVE or PRESCRIPTIVE for today. So what parts of this passage IS prescriptive of Church leadership?READ Ephesians 4:11 Ministers of the Gospel (apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, teachers) are called/sent out to “equip the saints for the work of ministry…” “My job is not to sing songs, or play guitar parts, my job is the EQUIP the people called to my local church to do the work of the Gospel.” - Tyson MorletDon’t miss the calling because you were worried about making services work. “Equip the saints and get out of the way as fast as you can.” - TMDo you know your gifts?Do you know who you’re equipping? Are you in the way of you team doing the work?
