New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope May 19, 2025 Day 1 of Week 8   Scripture – Matthew 1   Prayer:  Almighty God, We come before you on this Monday, as we start a new week, with both humility and gratefulness.  You are so powerful, so holy, and so wise.  We need you.  We seek you.  We are desperate to hear a word from you today, Lord.  We also know that we have failed over and over again.  Lord, forgive us for our sins, for the ways we fall short.  In these next few moments of silence, Lord, hear our prayers...Jesus, help us stay focused on you and your Word today.  In Your Name, Amen.   Welcome back, everyone, to the Daily Dose of Hope, a Deep Dive into the Gospels and Acts.  Today, we start the book of Matthew.  While the author does not identify himself, most scholars agree it was written by Matthew the tax collector.  He actually mentions himself a couple times in the Gospel.  The events in the book take place in the first 40 or so years of the first century.  It was actually written somewhere between 50 and 90AD.   Let's keep in mind that all the Gospel accounts were passed down and taught orally for about 30-40 years before they were written down.  Each Gospel author collected and arranged these accounts to highlight certain themes about Jesus.  Mark, who we just finished, emphasized Jesus' authority.  Matthew, on the other hand, very intentionally uses his Gospel to demonstrate the continuation and fulfillment of the whole Biblical story of God and the people of Israel.  Thus, he emphasizes how Jesus is the Messiah in the line of David, and he focuses on how Jesus is Immanuel (which means in Hebrew, God with us.) Matthew 1 starts with a genealogy.  Sometimes, our inclination is the brush over the genealogies, but this one is pretty unique.  First, we can see the connection between the Old Testament and the birth of Jesus. As we read through the names on the list, we get a picture of God's history of redemption for his people.  Abraham and David are highlights, as both were recipients of God's promises for the people of Israel, significant parts of redemptive history.  Another reason I love this genealogy is that five women are specifically mentioned. This was at a time when women were basically never mentioned in the history of patriarchal societies. And here we are, five very unique and interesting women–Tamar (who was quite tricky to achieve her purpose), Rahab (at one point a prostitute), Ruth (a Moabite), Uriah's wife (Bathsheba), and Mary.   The first four women were Gentiles or married to Gentiles, they were outsiders to a certain extent, and yet they had tenacious faith, the kind that would be critical for faith in Jesus.  This focus on Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba leads to the introduction of Mary.  It's like the author is saying, “Don't discount Mary!”  She may not be who you would expect to be the mother of the Savior of the world but God uses all kinds of people!  God lifts up all kinds of women, those who are proper and those who aren't. What a beautiful reminder that the Gospel is for ALL. Then, we have Joseph's story.  Joseph is probably the most underrated person in the Christmas story. He is like the father of the bride at the wedding. No one notices him yet he gets to help pay for the whole shin-dig. But Joseph is an example of faithful, unquestioning obedience in the middle of fearful, life-altering circumstances.   Scripture says that Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph.  Remember, Mary was a very young girl and was probably very poor.  Joseph would have been older than her.  We tend to think of Joseph as a carpenter but really it's more likely he was a general builder. He was from a kind of backwater, remote area of Palestine. He was probably illiterate (education was generally just for merchants and aristocrats at the time). Both Mary and Joseph were humble people from a very humble part of Israel.   Scripture continues, "before they came together, it was found that Mary was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit." Joseph, being a righteous man, faithful to the law, didn't want her to be publicly disgraced so he had decided to divorce her quietly. At the time, when one became engaged, it was much more formal than it is today. Most likely, Joseph had made an agreement with Mary's father, perhaps years earlier, to take Mary as his wife. This would have been a binding agreement. In the eyes of the law, they were as good as married already, even though the relationship had not been consummated.   Mary was found to be pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. Keep in mind that all Joseph knows at this time is that she is pregnant. His fiancé is pregnant and he knows the baby isn't his. We don't think much about Joseph's feelings. We focus a lot on Mary (and rightfully so) but Jospeh must have had all kinds of feelings too.  The whole thing must have been crushing for him. He had hopes and dreams. My guess is that he was hurt and betrayed. Despite that, he doesn't fly into an angry rage or have a desire to hurt Mary even though this would have amounted to adultery in their culture.   Joseph had compassion. He doesn't want to bring additional shame onto Mary if he can help it. Part of this could have been that Joseph was older than Mary. He might have known that a girl of that age didn't really have much control over her sexuality in that culture. Joseph is in a predicament. He wants to be faithful to the law, so he can no longer marry her, but yet he doesn't want to humiliate her either. So he decides to quietly divorce her, not make too much of a big deal about it. Regardless, Mary would face humiliation and be ostracized. That was the nature of the situation.   But before Joseph breaks off the engagement, he goes home and goes to sleep. It's always good to sleep on big decisions. While he is sleeping, an angel of the Lord appears to him in a dream and says, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” And here is the amazing thing. Scripture says that when he woke up, Joseph did what the angel told him and took Mary as his wife. If Joseph had doubts, they weren't recorded. If he made excuses, we certainly don't know about them. It appears he was simply obedient.    It's worth mentioning that the angel tells Joseph not to be afraid to marry Mary because the baby she is carrying was conceived by the Holy Spirit. We know that Mary was risking a lot, but Joseph was also taking big risks here. He also will make some pretty significant sacrifices. People are generally pretty good at counting and they would know that the baby was conceived before they got married. He also faces being ostracized and being an outcast in his community. It was scary! What would their lives look like? What would their families do? What would become of them? Joseph models for us that we can be obedient in spite of fear. He did what was commanded of him, even when it was hard.   Being obedient to God doesn't always look like we want it to look. Let's be real. We want being obedient to God to be a good job with a comfortable salary, a nice home, good schools for our kids, plenty of leisure time and fun activities, a fairly decent social standing, and occasional church attendance. For most of us, if we are honest, that's what we want obedience to God to look like the typical American dream.  But we learn from Joseph is that obedience to God might not always make sense, it might not be popular, and it might not be comfortable.   Obedience to God may also require sacrifice. In the case of Joseph, obedience may have cost him his reputation and his place in the community. We know that later it means he has to drop everything to go to Bethlehem for a census. Then, he has to go to Egypt to keep the baby safe from an evil king. This probably wasn't what Joseph envisioned for his young family.   When God calls us to something, there are often things we have to give up. Joseph gave up stability and safety. Think about what God has called you to. Maybe God has called you to minister to someone and give up your time. Maybe God has called you to share your faith with your neighbor, coworker, or that person at the gym and risk rejection. Maybe God has called you to volunteer in a specific area or give sacrificially to a mission partner. Maybe God has called you to go back to school, change jobs, reconcile with an estranged friend or family member. Maybe God has called you to full-time ministry. However God has called you (and I can guarantee he has called you in some way), it typically involves some kind of sacrifice, discomfort, and hard work. Being obedient to God doesn't always look like we want it to look.   The last thing I'll mention is that God calls us to obey even when we are fearful of the future. This is so hard but God calls us to obey through the fear. We trust that if God has called us to it, God will see us through it. What I've come to learn is that obedience and trust go hand in hand.   Have a wonderful Monday.  We will chat again tomorrow.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

As in Jesus's day today some people still believe God punishes sinners with illness suffering and death. These are rather the consequences of our sin, that God does allow. However God does not desire that we die in our sin, rather he sends his son to save us from the consequences of sin which is death.  Death becomes a servant of God that reminds us all of our need to repent and accept the salvation one for us by Jesus not our good works.

The Faith of Christians, Churches, and Nations Can Be Tested and Doubts Arise in Today's World; However, God Is Faithful and Will Not Forsake You MESSAGE SUMMARY: God will never leave you or forsake you. Even when difficulties arise and you are tempted to walk away from your faith, God will not leave you. When you are tempted to doubt God, remember that God is faithful. When the Apostles questioned Jesus about faith and prayer, Jesus told the Apostles, in Mathew 21:21-22, that your faith is powerful and that God will respond to your faith: “And Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.'”. Hold, unswervingly, to the hope and faith you profess because God, who promised us, is faithful. While you are endeavoring to hold onto your faith in God and Jesus' Gospel, you need to always remember the faithfulness of God, even in those times in which you may be doubting or questioning your faith. What is a house of prayer? It is a place of fellowship, communication and intimacy with God. God desired that His physical temple be a place of communion with Himself, a place where He could fellowship with man. However God's desire from the beginning has not just been to dwell with man, but also to dwell in man! He desires that we as believers be a place of communication, fellowship and intimacy with God - i.e., houses of prayer.God's heart is that every believer becomes the place where His presence can dwell and flow through - a house of prayer! This starts first by cultivating a personal relationship with Jesus in which the Holy Spirit has unhindered control. Secondly, we then join other believers to make up a corporate place of prayer that God's Spirit can flow through and His will be accomplished. When the hearts and minds of God's people are joined together in prayer, God is unlimited at what He can accomplish in and through them!Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? Propitiation When I talk to people I often hear things like, God is love, so I don’t have to worry about my own lifestyle or my morals, because God is love. When I die, He will accept me as I am providing I have tried your best. And of course that is partly true! God is indeed a God of love. But we must also remember that towards sin and sinful behaviour, He has great fury, anger and wrath (Psalm 7v11; Jeremiah 21v5). Nothing we say or do can appease His hatred of sin and sinful lifestyles. Nothing we can do is able to appease God’s anger, because His anger toward sin is unquenchable. Unquenchable that is, except for one thing. Tap or click here to save/download this question as a MP3 file This word, propitiation, basically means the turning aside of God's anger by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. All God's anger and judgment of sin falls on Jesus Christ, instead of us. But in order to accept it for yourself, you need to approach God to appease His anger (Romans 3:25; Isaiah 53:5; John 2:2, 5:6). Jesus was the sacrifice of atonement, or propitiation, as the one who would quench God’s anger towards sinful people, by taking away sin through His death on the cross. This shows Jesus as being both the Just one and the one who justifies. (Romans 3v25-26) Only through Him could the sins of the whole world, past, present and future, be forgiven. To some people, even some in the church, this is abhorrent! The very thought that God could willing send His son to be a blood sacrifice for sin is tantamount to abuse, some say! However God’s requirements are very clear! John 3v16 says it all in response to this “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life”. If there was any other way, would not God have done it that way? So as a Christian Disciple, live a life that is holy and pleasing to God. Not in order to somehow pave your own way into heaven, for that is already assured by way of Jesus’ death on the cross. Remember no sacrifice you make is greater than the one God made in sending His Son to death as a propitiation for your sin. 1 John 4v10: For this shows God’s real love – tough yet all-embracing Love. Isaiah 53:2b-3 He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.  He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. When we were reading Chapter 49 I said that the Servant was visually unimpressive – if you'd walked past him in the street in 1st Century Palestine you wouldn't have given him a second look. But actually, it's worse than that. Today's verse tells us that rather than being merely ignored, the Servant would be despised and looked down on. Why? Two reasons. Firstly, because he was not beautiful, and secondly, because he suffered pain. Both of those things made him uncomfortable to be around, in his own day. And both of those things are still, at the very least, awkward today. We live in a society that worships physical beauty.    Yes, there's a lot of talk about loving yourself and your body, whatever your shape or size, but that doesn't stop us being bombarded by messages encouraging us to pursue greater physical beauty. There's the occasional marketing campaign that features ‘real women' rather than airbrushed models, or models which a visible disability, but they're still treated as revolutionary, rather than being the norm. Even though we know it's not really true, we're still shaped by the assumption that physical beauty matters. That life would be better if I was more attractive.    And we easily assume that the effective, successful life, is marked by health and wholeness, rather than pain and suffering. So, if we were in charge of selecting a man for this role of Servant, wouldn't be want to pick someone who looks … well, attractive? Yet God very deliberately doesn't do that. Jesus' conception was utterly miraculous, so his appearance can't have been the inevitable consequence of the combination of Mary and Joseph's genes. However God did it, he created Jesus' body deliberately and intentionally. If he'd wanted to make Jesus the most handsome man ever born, he could have done. Similarly, when preparing the way for the Servant, surely God would want to remove every obstacle and difficulty that might interfere with his mission? Yet it turns out that the suffering and pain are essential to his mission. The coming of this Servant makes clear that - God's eyes at least - physical beauty doesn't count for much. And pain and suffering can accomplish things that health, wealth and happiness can't.  God values the obedience of the Servant more than his physique. The suffering and death of the Servant bring more lasting good into the world than the exams he might have passed, the certificates he might have received, or his contribution to his country's GDP. What a complete reversal of the values of our world! How wrong must our value judgements be, for us to look at the Servant and despise him. Let's pray that God would be teaching us more and more to value what he values, and to worship and honour the Servant who so many looked down on.

Jesus Christ - No longer a baby 2. Jesus Christ - Fully God Yesterday we looked at what the name Jesus meant and how it was appropriate that he was called that. Today we are looking briefly at Jesus being fully God! God’s salvation plan for humans’ involved triumphant victory over sin, death and the grave. However no person could be found who was eligible or capable enough to do this. So God stepped into human history, so that this victory could be achieved. This is what we celebrate at Christmas. This God-man would be fully human, so as to live every feature of humanity, including suffering and death. This God-man would also need to remain fully God, so as to be big enough and powerful enough to defeat sin, death and the grave. A human could only die for their own sins. However God could die for the sins of all humanity. Jesus, being sinless, was this God-man, consisting as he did of two complete natures, the God nature and the human nature. Throughout the Bible, Jesus is acknowledged as God. His good friend, John expressly calls Jesus, ‘the Word’ or God (John 1). Later on in John’s life, he states that Jesus was truly God and also eternal life! (1 John 5:20) Jesus Himself claimed equality with God when he forgave people their sins (Matthew 9:2; Mark 2:9; Luke 7:48). The Jewish rulers reckoned this was a God alone thing and dependant on the involvement of the temple authorities. They therefore accused Him, at least in their minds, of blasphemy against God! During the questioning when Jesus was on trial for this supposed act of blasphemy, Jesus equated Himself with being God (Matthew 26:64). John, reports many times where Jesus used the ancient name of God. “I AM”. in reference to Himself. (John 6:35, 48 & 51; John 8:12; John 10:7-11; John 10:14-15; John 11:25; John 14:6 and John 15:1) That Jesus is both human and divine is what makes Christianity unique amongst the religions of the world. It is why Jesus’ claims to be the only way to God, are true. Of course this is only a brief synopsis of what the Bible affirms about Jesus being fully God! Be encouraged to study this exciting topic for yourself! Come back tomorrow to see how we go on to discover together, much more about this most amazing of men - the full humanity of Jesus Christ! “LIFE UNDER, OVER, FROM, and FOR GOD each seeks to use God to achieve some other goal. God is seen as a means to an end. For example, LIFE FROM GOD uses him to supply our material desires. LIFE OVER GOD uses him as the source of principles or laws. LIFE UNDER GOD tries to manipulate God through obedience to secure blessings and avoid calamity. And LIFE FOR GOD uses him and his mission to gain a sense of direction and purpose.” “But LIFE WITH GOD is different because its goal is not to use God, its goal is God. He ceases to be a device we employ or a commodity we consume. Instead God himself becomes the focus of our desire. But before we can really desire God, we must have a clear understanding of who he is and what he is like. The reason most people gravitate to one of the other four postures is because they've never received a clear vision of who God is, and so they settle for something less.”Join Tennison and Ginelle as they begin their new series Living With God.  This is a overview of the book 'WITH: Reimagining The Way You Relate to God' by Skye Jethani. Jesus heals - of that, we can be certain! In today's passage, Jesus heals two women - but even when we don't see His healing as WE expect, we can trust God's sovereignty and perfect timing and coordination in all things! (Matthew 9:18-26 Mark 5:21-43, Luke 8:40-56) *** Welcome to Walking in the Word, the biblical teaching arm of the Women World Leaders' podcast. I'm your host Julie Jenkins. We are praying for you at Women World Leaders. Our mission is to empower you to walk in your God-given purpose – and part of that mission is to pray! We invite you to join with us in prayer by visiting our Prayer Wall at womenworldleaders.com where you can submit a prayer request or let others know that you are praying for them. We also have an amazing prayer team who bends their knees daily to God. I recently went through a tough season in my life, but I was able to walk through it peacefully covered by God's presence thanks to my amazing sisters who lifted me up even when I didn't have the words to say to God myself. If you would like to delve deeper into prayer, please email us at prayer@womenworldleaders.com. Let us know how we can meet you where you are – whether that be a one-on-one phone call, through email, or perhaps you are being called to join our prayer team. However God is leading you, I encourage you to connect with us – there is nothing like being surrounded by the family of God! Today we continue our systematic walk through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as we together, delve into God's Word and ask Him to show us what He wants us to learn. Today's teaching comes from Matthew 9:18-26, Mark 5:21-43, and Luke 8:40-56. Before we begin, let's pray… Dear Heavenly Father…thank you for meeting each of us where we are today. It never ceases to amaze me that you are ALWAYS there for us…waiting expectantly for us to decide to spend time with you. Thank you for your patience, your diligence, and your love! Guide us today as we study your Word. Help us understand more of you and to become more like you. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen. In the last couple of weeks, we saw Jesus cross the Sea of Galilee where He encountered a storm through which He proved His sovereignty over nature, then He exorcised a multitude of demons from a Gentile man, proving His sovereignty over evil, and then Jesus and the disciples boarded the boat once again and sailed back across the Sea of Galilee after the townspeople ran Him off. As continue the scripture reading today, Jesus is again stepping off the boat, this time back in Jewish territory, when He is met with a crowd and is about to showcase His sovereignty over disease and death. I want to pause here to recognize that God's plan is ALWAYS perfect! Jesus and the disciples had a LOT going on…and yet God gave them a solid opportunity to refresh themselves and reflect as they sailed across the water. How quick are you and I to dismiss all that God is giving us as we are on our way to somewhere WE have deemed important? Some of the best conversations I have had have been when I was in the car driving a long distance. And some of the most valuable lessons I have learned have happened when I was in a season of waiting and processing. Don't ever begrudge those moments of silence. Always remember that God's plan is PERFECT, He is ALWAYS working, and every moment is filled with His grace – we simply need to trust Him and open our eyes, expectantly asking to be receptive to all He has for us.    Let's begin reading today in Mark 5:21 from the New Living Translation where we meet two important characters – Jairus and an unnamed ill woman. These two people are as polar opposite as we can imagine. One is a high-powered Jewish synagogue leader, the other is an unknown woman who hadn't been able to worship in the synagogue for 12 years. But they are both in desperate need of Jesus – and they are both waiting on Him – with humility and faith. Mark 5:21… 21 Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. 22 Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, (JAI rus) arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, 23 pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.” As a synagogue leader, Jairus would have been well respected, and as many Jewish leaders were turning their backs on Jesus, Jairus may have felt peer pressure to do the same. But Jairus had faith and humility. He was desperate. His only daughter was dying. And yet he had faith that this JESUS could save her. He reacted in pure humility, in the midst of a large crowd, claiming his own dependence on this not-well-esteemed Jesus, he threw himself at Jesus' feet. And Jesus responded – because that's who Jesus is…verse 24… 24 Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. But meanwhile, we see yet another soul reacting in pure faith and humility. A woman who had been sick for 12 years. For 12 years, while Jairus enjoyed the companionship of his now dying twelve-year-old daughter, this woman struggled with an illness that kept her continuously ceremonially unclean, therefore unable to worship in the synagogue. She saw Jesus' respond to Jairus, the distinguished leader, and she could have turned away, but she pressed on in faith, knowing that Jesus alone could cure her. Verse 25…  25 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. 26 She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. 28 For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” This weary woman, who perhaps did not have the energy or confidence or strength to actually speak to Jesus, believed with her whole heart that if she could just touch the hem of His robe, she would be healed. And her faith was well-placed, verse 29 continues…  29 Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. Can you imagine her joy? Her elation? Have you ever had an encounter with Jesus where you just know that things were different from that moment on? I pray that you have – and if you can't recollect one right now, I pray that you will give yourself FULLY and COMPLETELY over to Jesus right now. There have been times in my life when God's presence has just been so palpable that it could not be denied, and I'm telling you, there is NOTHING like it! At one point I had been going through a season where I wanted to serve God SO BADLY, but no offer to serve Him was working out. I kept being denied the opportunity to serve God. I was dumbfounded. I wasn't doing this for me after all, I was doing it for God! But as I searched my soul, I realized that maybe I WAS doing it for me…somewhere deep within I wanted to be important, to gain the notoriety that a position of service would bring. I will never forget the moment of my conviction, confession, and release. I was sitting at a red light of all places. And I released my service to God…saying “if you want me to clean toilets for you, that is what I will do. No job is too menial.” The light turned green, and I literally and figuratively put my foot on the gas as my trajectory changed and I drove into my future. Later that VERY day…in fact within an hour, I was offered a serving opportunity of a lifetime. I know what I felt like then – having my life completely changed by Jesus. So I can KIND of imagine how this woman felt – knowing that she had been healed by the power and grace of Jesus Christ. And as her trajectory changed, she was immediately asked to boldly come forward…verse 30… 30 Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” No one understood this question, no one except Jesus and the woman, that is. Sometimes in life you WILL have encounters with Jesus that only you and He will fully understand. I encourage you to open your ears to hear what Jesus has to say to YOU! And open your heart to respond to Him. It won't always be easy…but it will always be worth it! Verse 31… 31 His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?'” 32 But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” Jesus…busy Jesus…who had calmed the storm, driven out demons, and now was on His way to help the esteemed Jairus…was not too busy for this woman…and He will NEVER be too busy for you either… But things were probably not feeling as perfectly timed on Jairus end…who was likely fighting frustration at Jesus' delay. And, in fact, verse 35 continues… 35 While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There's no use troubling the Teacher now.” 36 But Jesus overheard[a] them and said to Jairus, “Don't be afraid. Just have faith.” Jesus always is intentional with every minute. He has a purpose and a plan that is often far beyond our understanding, but we need never worry. Our job is to continue to come to Him in faith and humility, trusting His goodness. Verse 37… 37 Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James). 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. 39 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn't dead; she's only asleep.” 40 The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. 41 Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,”(TAHlly tah KUUM) which means “Little girl, get up!” 42 And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. 43 Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat. Faith and humility. Trusting in God's perfect timing. Jairus and the woman certainly didn't have a lot in common, but they did have faith and humility in common. They both exercised faith and humility in the face of what the world would deem as hopeless and despairing situations. They both exercised faith and humility and did the one thing they knew to do…and that was to seek out Jesus. And Jesus was all they needed. Jesus had demonstrated His sovereignty over nature, demons, and now He demonstrated His sovereignty over illness and even death. We don't have to know what to say or what to do…we only have to know who to trust. Step with humility and put your faith in Jesus, the true Sovereign King. He will never let you down. Dear Most Holy God – we DO come to you with faith and humility. We confess that you are all we need, that your plan is perfect, and we vow to trust your perfect timing. Help us to allow YOU to plan the trajectory of our life. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Last week we watched as the story that supplied water for the prophet Elijah dried up, and the ravens which brought him bread and meat ceased to appear. It did not take Elijah long to realize that this phase of his life, the training phase, was now over. And as he stood there gazing along the great Wadi Hareet, the voice of God spoke to him again, and this is what God said:"Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. I have commanded a widow there to provide for you."Without question, this was not the message that Elijah had expected. In fact, it appears that these instructions from the Lord left the prophet shocked and speechless. Now, Elijah would not have been shocked if God had said to him, "Go to the desert wastes of Paran," or "Go to Mount Sinai, the mountain of my glory." The truth is this: both of these locations were places where God was known to dwell. His holy presence, His KAVOD, His SHEKINAH, was found in those places. However God did not tell Elijah to go to either the Desert of Paran or to Mount Sinai. Instead God said, “Go to the village of Zarephath.” Why would Elijah be so shocked by that divine directive? There was a reason! Zaraphath was a village in the region known as Phoenicia, which was Gentile territory. In fact, it was as Gentile as it gets. This village was located in the very heart of the land from which the evil queen Jezebel of Tyre came. It was a demonized land, a land where the god Ba'al was worshiped; a place where Israel's God was scorned, so this message made no sense to Elijah. He was at war with this Phoenician god and the very last place he thought a man of God should be seen was in the heart of the enemy's stronghold. But this much can be said for Elijah; he may not have understood what God had said and what God did at times, but he was usually willing to obey what God told him to do, no matter how difficult it seemed. Pastor Harris will focus on this tendency this morning.Support the show

Question 1: What Makes Me Worth Saving? This is a common question for people that, maybe, have lived a life of hurt or hurting others. We will discuss several topics surrounding this question such as:- Do we have an accurate view of sin and holiness?- God is holy and pure ane we are not. - However God is very loving and wants to save us. Question 2: Will I Be Able to See My Family or Pets in Heaven?Only way to get to heaven is to have faith in Jesus Christ. The only people that get to heaven are repentent sinners. The most important thing we can do to ensure we see our family is to tell them about Jesus Christ, so that they may believe and have eternal life.  DONATE:If you feel led to support us, consider donating:https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=RPW2VCDMHJED2 FOLLOW:Twitter: https://twitter.com/RTTBible RTTB Website: https://www.reasoningthroughthebible.com/ Support the show

If you appreciate this work, consider supporting it - https://www.patreon.com/seekgodtogether Today we will read Acts 2:4 which says, “Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages as the Spirit gave them ability for speech.” This is strange. But it's scripture. We must receive it. The Spirit comes and fills believers. They are now partners with and animated by God. They speak in languages they did not learn - a reversal of the curse at the Tower of Babel. Humans are coming back together in the Spirit. It's actually a fulfillment of an Old Testament prophecy from Joel 2:28-32. Strangely enough, these days are referred to as, “The Last Days”. Can it be that whatever the last days are, we have been in them for 2000 years? A time in which the Holy Spirit is bringing us back together in Christ? Yes I think so. And He does this at least initially through the phenomena of “speaking in tongues.” God does strange things and works in strange ways. But His end game seems clear - to bring humanity back together in Him. So should we seek strange phenomena? I won't say no. I do. But perhaps what we should really seek is the filling of the Spirit - whatever that entails. Whatever strange phenomena God wants to perform in us…let's be open. However God wants to use us to bring those He loves back together…let's be open. “Holy Spirit fill me. Animate me to unite those You love in Jesus. Strange phenomena or not, I am open to You. Surprise me, thrill me with Your methods.”

Egypt and it's people continue to come under judgmental plagues due to Pharaoh's repeated stubbornness to yield to God. Five plagues have been put on Egypt by God and there are more coming. Each one is countering the gods which Egypt and their Pharaoh worshipped. The sixth plague infects Egypt with boils and sores. Afterwards Moses confronts Pharaoh face to face with God's message and it is clear why God is inflicting all these judgments on Pharaoh. Pharaoh's heart is set against God and has been set against God from the beginning. God is using this situation to demonstrate His superiority and uniqueness among all the other religions. God is giving people the freedom to follow Him or not. God inflicts a seventh plague of hail and fire that destroys crops and livestock. However God protects the land of Goshen where the Israelites are. We see God once again starting end ending each of these plagues as he wills to do so with great precision.   Who is really in charge throughout all of this? Why does God allow Pharaoh to remain? Is it fair of God to inflict these judgments to demonstrate who He is?Do we ever exalt ourselves above God?What is the overall lesson learned from Pharaoh's resistance to God?Is Pharaoh sincere in his acknowledgment of God?DONATE:If you feel led to support us, consider donating:https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=RPW2VCDMHJED2 FOLLOW:Twitter: https://twitter.com/RTTBible RTTB Website: https://www.reasoningthroughthebible.com/Support the show

To the land of milk and honey, promised by God to Abraham's descendants through Isaac and Jacob. We see Moses give reasons why he is not the right person for this mission. However God reassures Moses that he will be with him.  God also provides a name for Moses to give to the Israelites - "I AM WHO I AM". What objections does Moses give that he is not the right person for this mission?Do we sometimes give reasons to God on why we are not the right person to serve Him?What is the meaning of the name "I AM"? Where is the land "flowing with milk and honey"?Why is this the time God chooses to take the Israelites from bondage?Support the show

Deuteronomy 1 The chapter expresses Moses' final words to the Israelites. In so many instances have they made God angry. They've complained ,doubted , refused to follow His instructions. According to the commands of God they were able to conquer the enemy nation's around them . Moses mentioned the negative reports of the 10 spies. Deuteronomy 2 Moses continues speaking to the Israelites about their wanderings. He tells them they have traveled along the Red Sea route to reach the wilderness because God commanded this. They made their way around the hilly Seir areas. Moses stated that the Lord was the one who blessed the Israelites. Also he reminded them of the salvation of the Lord from the king of Heshbon. Deuteronomy 3 After defeating the King of Heshbon, the Israelites went to Bashan. King Og of Bashan and his army fought them at Edrei. God told Moses they were not to be afraid of King Og and to do to him what they had done to those in Heshbon. The land was divided among the tribes in Israel. Moses then reminded the Israelites that God had commanded them to take possession of the land that had been given to them. He also told them that all able-bodied men were to be ready to fight and that they were to be the first ones to cross over the Jordan. However God didn't allow moses to cross River Jordan . God told him to commission Joshua and to strengthen him, as well as encourage him because Joshua was going to lead the people across the Jordan to their inherited land. Lessons learnt God is committed to the loving relationship with us. God reminds us of how much he loves us and how he has demonstrated that love in so many ways. He pleads with us to respond to his love by loving him in return with all our heart, soul and strength. Also God is not a respecter of persons . God did not allow moses to enter the promised land . Achieving our ministry goals demands self control , humility ,temperance and patience. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/irtwbey365/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/irtwbey365/support

Lev 8 Aaron was ordained as the high priest together with his sons. He was adorned and dressed with the priestly attire . The ordination was to be conducted for seven days. Moses conducted the festival according to the command of God. The sacrifice was conducted and the glory to the Lord appeared to all the people and fire came down and consumed the burnt offering. Lev 10 Two of Aaron sons were killed by God. They offered fire and incense before the Lord unauthorized. Meanwhile Moses Warned the remaining sons of Aaron to never allow their hair to be loose or tear their cloth as a sign of mourning lest they died . They were to occupy the place of their deceased brothers. Lessons from Today's reading. God chose Aaron to be the high priest and also his sons were given the responsibility of conducting the worship. However God is not a respecter of no one. He showed his anger when they took him for granted. We should not be too familiar with God to the extent that we begin to do things on our own mind without respecting his will. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/irtwbey365/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/irtwbey365/support

Simeon prophesied the pain that Mary would go through seeing the suffering of her Son. “We do not come to a set of doctrines. We do not come to a church. We do not even come to the gospel. All these are vital. But most truly, we come to a person, to Christ himself.” ~ Dane Ortlund.

Surprise me, thrill me with Your methods.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Do not give up your faith!   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, fill me with the simple trust that even out of the most awful evil around me, you are able to bring great good — for me, for others, and for your great glory. In Jesus' name, amen.     Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 91). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be ashamed of the Gospel. I will not be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes (including me). Thinking on Scripture with Dr. Steven R. Cook

"Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving." (Col 4:2)      God communicates with us through His written Word, and we communicate with Him through our prayers. When we pray, it immediately connects us with God, allowing us to confess our sin, express thankfulness, intercede for others, or request something for ourselves. Prayer is motivated by different causes and takes different forms. The most common words in the Bible translated prayer are תְּפִלָּה tephillah (Job 16:17; Psa 65:2) and προσευχή proseuche (Luke 19:46; Acts 12:5), which simply speak of the act of prayer.[1] According to Unger, “Prayer is the expression of man's dependence upon God for all things. What habitual reverence is to praise, the habitual sense of dependence is to prayer.”[2] And according to Liefeld, prayer is “communion with God, usually comprising petition, adoration, praise, confession, and thanksgiving. The ultimate object of prayer in both OT and NT is not merely the good of the petitioner but the honor of God's name.”[3]      There is no inherent power in prayer to change things. Biblically, the power lies in the One who answers the prayer, and He alone reserves the right to change things if He wills. God answers prayer, but He does so according to His sovereign will (Psa 135:6; Dan 4:35; Isa 46:9-10). Sometimes He says yes, sometimes no, and sometimes wait. It is good to remember that a prayer delayed is not necessarily a prayer denied. Sometimes we just need patience.      Some of the different types of prayer found in Scripture include: request for supply (Psa 116:1-2; Phil 4:6; Eph 6:18), thanksgiving (John 11:41; Col 4:2; Phil 4:6), submission (Luke 22:41-42), and intercession (Acts 12:1-5; Eph 6:18-19). The best prayers seek to glorify God above all else (John 14:13).[4] The Old Testament mentions imprecatory prayers, where Israelite believers prayed for God to destroy their enemies (Psa 58:6-8; 69:23-28). Imprecatory prayers were valid under the Mosaic Law where obedient Israelites could expect God to dispense justice on their enemies (Deut 28:7). Imprecatory prayers are not valid for Christians because we are not under the Mosaic Law (Rom 6:14). We are commanded to pray for our enemies that God will bless them (Matt 5:44-45; Luke 6:28, 35; cf. Rom 12:17-21; 1 Th 5:15; 1 Pet 3:9). If God dispenses judgment upon our enemies, He will do so at His discretion and not ours (Rom 12:17-19; 2 Th 1:6).      Prayer should be ongoing. Jesus taught His disciples “that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart” (Luke 18:1). As Christians, we are to “pray without ceasing” (1 Th 5:17). This means our prayer life should never end, but should be ongoing, day by day, moment by moment. Life can be stressful, but we are to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Phil 4:6). As Christians, we are to “draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb 4:16).      Most often prayer is an appeal to God to change a difficult or helpless situation. Sometimes God changes our situations as we request (i.e., concerning employment, health, finances, family matters, etc.), and sometimes He leaves the difficult situation and seeks to change our attitude. When God does not remove a difficult situation as we request, then He intends for us to deal with it by faith (Jam 1:2-4). God uses difficult situations to remove pride (Dan 4:37; 2 Cor 12:7-10), and to develop our Christian character (Rom 5:3-5). It's almost always the case that we prefer God change our circumstances rather than our attitude; and yet, it seems both biblically and experientially that God prefers to do the opposite. Though the Lord is concerned about our difficult situations, He's more concerned with developing our Christian character than relieving our discomfort. However God chooses to answer, He has His reasons and they always glorify Him. A challenge for us is to trust that His plan is better than ours, wherever it happens to lead us, or however difficult the journey becomes.      Prayer is for believers, for one can address God as Father only as a member of the family of God (John 1:12; Gal 3:26). The general agreement among theologians is that God does not hear the prayers of unbelievers, for they are not God's children but belong to Satan. Jesus said of unbelieving Jews, “You are of your father the devil” (John 8:44). Logically, we cannot call God our Father if He is not.[5]      Jesus prayed often, both publicly and privately (Matt 11:25-26; 14:23; 19:13; 26:36; Mark 6:46; Luke 5:16; 6:12; 9:28; 10:21; 22:41-42; John 11:41-42; 12:27-28; 17:1-26), and His prayer life was so noticeable, that His disciples asked Him to teach them to pray (Luke 11:1-4; cf. Matt 6:9-13). For the Christian, prayer should be directed to God the Father (Matt 6:6; Luke 11:2; Eph 5:20; 1 Pet 1:17),[6]in the name of Jesus (John 14:13; 15:16), and in the Holy Spirit (Eph 6:18; Jude 1:20). Praying in the name of Jesus is not a magic formula that makes our prayers acceptable to God; rather, it means our request is consistent with Jesus' character and will (1 John 5:14-15). Praying in the Spirit means we pray as the Spirit leads according to Scripture.[7] According to Ryrie, “Though we may address any Person of the Trinity, ordinarily, according to the biblical precedent, we address the Father in the name of Christ as the Spirit directs us (John 14:14; Eph. 1:6; 2:18; 6:18).”[8] It is interesting to note that both God the Holy Spirit and God the Son offer intercessory prayers for us to God the Father (Rom 8:26; Heb 7:24-25). When God Does Not Hear Our Prayers      There are some things in life that God conditions on prayer (Jam 4:2), but praying is no guarantee He'll grant our request. Being a righteous God, He only hears the prayers of those who seek to know Him and do His will. The apostle Peter writes, “For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer. But the Lord's face is against those who do evil” (1 Pet 3:12). The apostle John writes, “This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him” (1 John 5:14-15).      Biblically, there are several reasons why God does not answer the prayer of believers: lack of faith (Jam 1:5-8), worship of other gods (Jer 11:12-14), failure to take in Bible teaching (Prov 1:24-31; 28:9; Zech 7:11-13), selfishness (Jam 4:2-3), carnality (Psa 66:18; Mic 3:4; Isa 1:15; 59:1-3), lack of harmony in the home (1 Pet 3:7), pride and self-righteousness (Job 35:12-13), and lack of obedience (Deut 1:43-45; 1 John 3:22; 5:14). All of these failings can be corrected as the believer learns God's Word and lives obediently by faith. Failure to learn God's Word and/or apply it results in self-harm, much like a child who will not listen to her parents, but repeatedly keeps reaching for the hot flame because it's pretty. God's commands are designed to bring blessing, either by teaching us to avoid that which is harmful, or to pursue that which is helpful. Summary      Prayer is a blessing we enjoy as believers as we can come before God's throne of grace and make requests (Heb 4:16). As Christians, we are to “pray at all times in the Spirit” (Eph 6:18), and to “pray without ceasing” (1 Th 5:17; cf. Luke 18:1; Rom 12:12; Col 4:2). As we advance toward spiritual maturity, God will occupy our thoughts in all matters, and prayer will come more and more naturally, and we will seek His interests above our own and pray according to His will.             [1] Other words include פָּלַל palal – to intervene as a mediator (Gen 20:7; Job 42:8), לַחַשׁ lachash – a whispering prayer (Isa 26:16; 29:4), שָׁאַל shaal – to ask, inquire (Isa 7:11; 45:11), עָתַר athar – a prayer related to sacrifice (Job 33:26), δέησις deesis – an urgent request (Eph 6:18), and ἔντευξις enteuxis – simple prayer, childlike prayer (1 Tim 2:1). The word αἰτέω aiteo is not translated as prayer, but is clearly used when making requests to God (Matt 7:7; John 14:13). [2] Merrill Frederick Unger et al., “Prayer”, The New Unger's Bible Dictionary (Chicago: Moody Press, 1988). [3] W. L. Liefeld, “Prayer,” ed. Geoffrey W. Bromiley, The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Revised (Wm. B. Eerdmans, 1979–1988), 931. [4] Moses provides a model prayer in Exodus 32:7-14 where he prayed on behalf of His people, Israel, that God would not pour out His wrath on them because of their idolatry (Ex 32:1-6). Moses' prayer to God starts by identifying Israel as “Your people” whom He had rescued from Egyptian bondage (Ex 32:11). Israel was not just any people, but God's chosen nation, who had already tasted of His great grace and compassion.[4] After citing God's deliverance, Moses then argued with God to withhold His wrath for two reasons: First, if God destroyed Israel, then His reputation among the pagan nations would be tarnished (Ex 32:12). Moses sought to protect God's reputation in the eyes of others, even unbelievers, and to uphold His glory. Second, if God destroyed Israel, He would be in violation of the promises He'd made to Israel's forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Ex 32:13). Moses did not want others to see God as one who fails to keep His promises. Moses' prayer was heard and God relented of the judgment He intended to bring on His people because of their sin (Ex 32:14). [5] However, there does seem to be at least one occasion in which God heard the prayer of an unbeliever who was seeking Him for salvation (e.g., Acts 10:1-2, 30-31; 11:13-14). It could be that if an unbeliever seeks God for salvation, as Cornelius did, then His prayers for salvation are answered. [6] Although there is at least one petition in the NT directed to Jesus (Acts 7:59-60). [7] The Greek preposition ἐν can mean, “in” “by” or “with” the Spirit. Hoehner translates the prepositional phrase ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ ἐν πνεύματι as “at every opportunity or occasion in the Spirit” (Harold Hoehner, Ephesians: An Exegetical Commentary, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Baker Academic, 2002, p. 856). Hoehner further states, “In the immediate context [of Eph 6:18], praying in the Spirit may well be connected to the sword of the Spirit. The sword of the Spirit is, on the one hand, God's spoken word to put His enemies to flight and, on the other hand, the believer's utterance to God in prayer in the power of the Holy Spirit to aid in the struggle against the evil powers” (p. 857). TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will entrust to Him my future. I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.  From 2 Timothy 1:12 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Psalms 91:1-10; Mathew 28:16-20; Mathew 6:25-34; Psalms 18b:11-20. Thank you for listening. Check out more at www.seekGodtogether.com Today we will read Acts 2:4 which says, “Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages as the Spirit gave them ability for speech.” This is strange. Surprise me, thrill me with Your methods.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
