Vertical Guidance

On this week's podcast, we hosted Rob Haglund. Rob had a very long and successful aviation career. He started out his professional career with Delta at age 25. He worked with Delta until retiring at the age of 52. Rob then wanted to get back into the industry so he started working for Jet Blue, then over to Compass, and then ended his career by going back to Delta, as a captain on the MD80. Rob's vast experience in the industry gives him a fantastic viewpoint on the industry today. He offers insight on how to have a successful aviation career as well as how to avoid complacency once you reach your dream job. Rob gives tremendous advice on staying motivated through the ups and downs. Our favorite quote was "It goes fast, just enjoy the ride."

In this week's episode, we were honored to host UND alumni Travis Wellik. Travis goes over the vast opportunities within an aviation career. We also discuss how you could get your foot in the door at Cirrus Aircraft and what the career progression would look like. We finish off the podcast with an awesome story of how dynamic general aviation flying can be!

On this weeks episode we host UND Standards Department Pilots Owen Poborsky and Trent Cardott. They are conducting UND stage checks at all levels (except CFI) so they see it all. We go over how students can prepare for oral, and flight portions of the stage so they can be successful. We also discuss how to explain a stagecheck failure on an airline interview. It is very important to know that a few stage check failures will no totally derail your future airline career! However, they are very important and should be taken seriously.

Believe it or not… we made it to our 11th episode! On this weeks podcast we host Jake McLaughlin. He is a young FedEx pilot based in Hong Kong. We discuss how Jake was able to get to his dream job so quickly and some future plans. He also offers some interesting advice on how to get to the next step in your airline career.

On this weeks episode we had the privilege to host Dan Mallot. Dan is currently a First Officer for Sun Country Airlines, a UND professor, and a business owner. Dan's business experience partnered with his airline experience make this podcast one that you cannot miss! We discuss a wide range of topics including making connections, the vast amount of jobs in the industry, how to stay motivated and get fired up for the day, pathway programs, and how to prepare yourself for a job interview! There is an incredible amount of life and career advice packed into this podcast so give it a listen!

On this weeks episode we host Tyler Barry, a regional airline pilot(not SkyWest). There are a variety of topics discussed about airline pilot life and how the regional carriers work! Some other topics discussed include pilot unions, airline pay, and how to choose where to live as a pilot! We also went into the massive increase in unruly passengers in the last year! Keep in mind, Mr. Barry is not a recruiter for his airline so all of the information is very real and unbiased! Thanks again Tyler!

In this week's episode, we host Chatham Harris! Chatham is a UND graduate and has vast experience in the corporate industry. He is a fantastic example of someone that overcame a massive amount of adversity to make it to where is today. We discuss the ins and outs of corporate aviation, and how to become a networking professional. Chatham's aviation career is not what the typical UND aviator follows, and is very eye-opening to see how massive the aviation industry is. We discuss the vast amount of opportunities available in today's booming industry. Lastly, we talk about how to deal with career setbacks, and how some blessings are delivered in disguise.

This week on the podcast we are joined by Emme Miller and Abby Jarve. Abby is currently a First Officer at Skywest and Emme is working on her ATC and UAS majors. Abby was a CFI and Emme was her student for her private pilot training. They discuss how to maximize instructor-student relations while maintaining professionalism. Abby and Emme also talk about being women in aviation and how we can work to get women more involved with aviation. Towards the end of the podcast, Abby talks about how to set yourself up for success in the aviation industry and Emme breaks down what the ATC major is like at UND. We hope you enjoy the podcast!

This week on the podcast we sit down with Jeff Frane a former Air Force pilot and now a Check Airman for FedEx. This former UND graduate goes over his journey to becoming a Captain for FedEx. We discuss how to diversify in the aviation field. He believes this is the key to having a successful aviation career. We finish off this week talking about FedEx as a company and how they compare to other airlines.

On this week's podcast, we host Zach Dabrowski. We wanted to keep going on another week of advice for newer UND students. We discuss topics ranging from UNDs new Training Course Outlines to how to be a good student in general. The back half of this episode is absolutely loaded with some fantastic advice that we think everyone would enjoy listening to, so make it happen and learning something!

In this week's episode, we have Jack Kuiper, Sam Beder, Kyle Moser, and Christoph Webber on the Podcast. We go into information that we wish we knew as incoming freshmen to UND. We go over tips and tricks for stage checks, time management, block exams, and other high-stress situations that you will need to deal with at UND. This week on the Vertical Guidance Podcast we dive into how Dave was able to make it to the regionals so quickly. He talks about different tips and tricks he used to get through his flight training in the quickest and most effective way. If you would like to learn how to get to your goal faster in aviation, David is a great person to listen to.

This weeks guest on Vertical Guidance is Mike Trost. Although Mike's aviation career just recently started, he has had some awesome experiences including some Alaska Flying, and just recently working for Piper Aircraft. Mike shares some awesome stories and gives advice on how to find the unique opportunities that he was able to find!

On the very first episode of the Vertical Guidance Podcast, we talk to Dan Klaver on a variety of topics. We think Dan offers great advice on how to handle "checkride anxiety" and how to stay focused on flight training in a collegiate environment where there can be a lot of distractions.
