She is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine, Associate Director of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship Program at Stanford University, and Co-Director of Impact1 where she mentors and advises entrepreneurs in the pediatric and maternal space through all aspects of medical device development, from identifying clinical needs to commercialization. Her specific areas of investigational interest include the development and commercialization process of neonatal, pediatric and maternal health medical devices. She is a national leader in neonatal resuscitation, ECMO, device development and has been an AHRQ, FDA and NSF funded investigator. But her work extends outside of the academic realm to industry having co-founded EMME (acquired by Simple Health 2022) an award-winning reproductive health company, medical director for Novonate (acquired by Laborie 2023) a neonatal umbilical catheter securement company and notable consultant for Vitara (EXTEND - artificial environment to decrease complications of prematurity), Laborie, Ceribell, Novocuff and Avanos™. The NICU can range from having just a couple of extra staff in the delivery room to having 15 people if a baby needs help, making the birth experience much more intense and involved. Planning ahead with your partner about who will go with the baby in case of separation can help make a stressful situation a little easier. About 10% of babies need some help breathing at birth, but most recover quickly; only a small percentage require NICU care beyond the basic interventions. NICUs are graded by levels (I-IV), and knowing what level your hospital offers can help families prepare—higher-level NICUs can treat more complex issues but aren't always necessary for uncomplicated births. If your hospital isn't a level III or IV, babies needing higher-level care may need to be transferred, which could mean temporary separation from parents; hospitals always work to reunite families as quickly as possible. NICU nurses are passionate, skilled, and deeply care about the babies and their families, creating a loving and safe environment even during stressful times. Parents can support their recovery and milk production by getting rest and using NICU technologies (like webcams) to stay connected—it's okay to take breaks and trust the NICU staff. Emerging technologies like Labry's Life Bubble are making NICU stays safer and more comfortable, allowing parents to hold their babies even when special catheters are in place. Skin-to-skin contact in the NICU is highly beneficial for both babies and parents, helping with bonding, milk production, and even neurodevelopment; parents are encouraged to ask staff about timing and any concerns about wires or tubes. We recorded on Thursday, just hours after the funeral of a good and humble man, President Jimmy Carter. The humanitarian from Plains was praised by a parade of family and friends, led by President Biden. In contrast (unless he gets a last-second reprieve from his puppets on the Supreme Court) our next President — a narcissist who can't even spell “humble” — will be formally sentenced on 34 felony counts. Donald Trump will go down in history as the only convicted criminal to occupy the Oval Office. He's not happy about it and made that clear at another of his patent-pending bananas news conferences, events sounding like a Festivus-style airing of grievances and feats of "strength" (a.k.a. threatening anyone who disagrees with him). In Michigan, the new Legislature has convened with Republicans in control of the House … and the new Speaker giving his oversight committee broad subpoena power. Will Matt Hall bring us a revival of the infamous Rudy Guiliani farts-and-lies hearing he hosted in 2021? Republicans in Michigan and across the nation have targeted transgender women, especially the handful participating in sports, as their culture war of the year project. This week the attacks extended to the U.S. House of Representatives where a new rule was added to ban newly elected Representative Sarah McBride, the first transgender House member, from using the women's bathroom. We are joined by someone who is helping lead the fight in the 2025 Civil Rights battle: Emme Zanotti, director of advocacy and civic engagement at Equality Michigan. Emma's first experience in the cannabis plant started in 2015 when her brother and her started a delivery service for humans in LA. At that point it was only legal for medical usage, not recreationally. It was just starting to become mainstream for people. So at that time there was nothing really for animals. During the time of their delivery business her dog was diagnosed with a very severe form of cancer of the liver. The vet told her that they could do chemo or nothing and either way he probably only has a few months to live. Emma opted to not do chemo because she didn't want his last few months to be at the vet all the time and not feeling great. Her brother suggested giving him CBD to make him comfortable and they had current human customers using CBD for cancers. These human customers were seeing remissions in their cancer so they thought why not try it for animals. They figured out the dosage by giving him the same concentrated form their human customers were taking and she also gave her dog a tincture which is what her product she has now is modeled off of. Her dog was given 3 months to live and ended up living 4 years and his tumor went away. Those results were what made her dive into the plant and the industry for animals. Slowly over the next 5 years products came to the market for dogs and the better products are human grade. Emma's products are all hemp so you will not get high off of her products. In 2019 Emme launched her business, Mikkos Choice, for horses first.   Now in 2024 there are many products on the market for pets. There are many companies that dose based on weight and that is not how to dose her CBD products. Every person and animal is different so she has recommendations on her product on where to start for the dosage. There is a lot of flexibility with her product. Emma gives suggestions on what to look for when doing research on a CBD brand for your pet.
