Two recent Cirrus accidents killed a total of seven people. Greg Feith, John Goglia and Todd Curtis have some advice for Cirrus pilots to avoid similar tragedies. They caution newer technology supports, but is not a replacement for, good planning and pilot decision-making.One accident at Kill Devil Hills airport in North Carolina, killed four adults and one child. Another, in Provo, Utah airport killed both occupants. The Kill Devil Hills aircraft apparently had the maximum possible number of occupants. Todd shares his experiences flying with a heavily loaded aircraft and how weight impacts safe flight practices. Kill Devil Hills Airport has a relatively short runway. Planning and maintaining a stabilized approach, making adjustments for trees and towers, and factoring in weather conditions all need consideration when planning to take off and land there.Accident investigators are urged to look into the specific training the pilot had for this Cirrus model. In the Utah flight, the aircraft may have entered an accelerated stall and crashed during a second approach shortly after turning from the downwind leg to the base leg.Like the first accident, ADS-B data indicated that the accident aircraft did not recently land at the accident airport. The pilot's lack of familiarity and planning may be key factors in the crash. When we say Top Gun, you probably think Tom Cruise. Gary talks with host Mehrdad Zarifkar about his life as a Top Gun, buying planes with his wife of forty years, what he learned attending the funerals of his friends and colleagues who died in aviation accidents, and much more. Top Gun, also known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, is a well-known and prestigious training program for Naval Aviators. But Gary Black didn't always want to be a pilot. He was heading for vet school… until he got in the cockpit of a fighter jet. Gary's love of aviation led him through many unique facets of the industry, including time spent as a civilian test pilot at Cirrus Aircraft, where he validated the parachute system in the Cirrus SR20. Aviation fans from all walks of life will find something to love in this interview with a long-time Top Gun pilot and all-around good guy Gary Black. And I am here joined remotely by lightning protection expert, Allen Hall. Allen, how are you? Allen:  Great. Dan, how are you doing? Dan: Doing well, so. A lot of new things going on this week. I got a new mic on the way, so ordered some new parts for my podcasting set up here. I got this huge, like dr octopus, um, like at home set up, which is pretty intense. Um, what's going on with you up there? Allen:  Uh, well, we've been through a couple of snowstorms over the last week. Uh, everybody is still quarantined for the most part. They canceled school for the rest of the year. Uh, how's everyone feel about that? Not happy, not happy at all. Uh, all the, the kids are just missing being with the kids and the teachers are trying to work, uh, classes through zoom and, or other video formats, and it's just not the same. And so the kids. Are really struggling with the lack of sort of one-on-one or a groups with the teacher interactions. I'm just trying to get homework done. The other thing that he announced, it's, it's all pass fail. So the kids don't have grades like they would normally, and my daughter's a junior so. This is sort of like the year you need grades to start applying to schools and no one showed her and the SATs have been shoved off and it's just, everything's in chaos right now. Um, so that's, that's, uh, an unusual twist cause I didn't think the sat would get shoved off like that, but it, it did, it got pushed off until then, until the fall.  And then the other thing that seems like it's happening is a lot of the colleges and universities. Or not worrying about sat scores. So they're just saying, apply with what you have, which is going to be, it's going to be an interesting curve that's just going to be on, uh, for the next couple of years to see how that all plays out. We're not going to know, obviously for several years to see what happens there, but, um, kids not going to class all the time and, and just know a couple of teachers in different parts of the country. And. They're having trouble with the kids showing up on the, on the video, uh, video links, like someone that just don't show up and what are you going to do? There's really, you can't force them to show up. Right. So if they're not going to show up, they're not going to show up. Yeah. It's unfortunate because the kids are really missing out on a good opportunity to learn. You know, if you're sitting at home in bounds, we'll be learning something. Yeah, we'll see. Well, they're probably Googling things, if that's any consolation. Tick tock, tick tock you tubing a, yeah, yeah, yeah. Or learning how to, I mean, there's so much weird stuff on Instagram, like interesting stuff. I watch. Little clips of manufacturing and woodworking and li...

Ask a pilot, which is their favorite plane, and they may answer with a plane they've never flown before.  We know that sometimes an airplane "speaks" to a person.  It may be the history, the sound, the performance, or maybe it's because of it's lines and appearance.  LIN 2010, Cirrus continued its streak of innovations by introducing the Xi appearance option.  It gave owners the option of making their plane a truly personal "one of a kind" experience.    Chris Custer, Lead Xi Designer for Cirrus Aircraft, joins the SimpleFlight crew in this week's episode to discuss the program from the designer's point of view.  This includes the challenge of working with an owner to help them vocalize and translate their vision into a reality that takes the ownership experience to a higher level. Chris' passion for design, combined with the pride he takes in helping customers navigate the many decisions they must make, comes through with "flying colors" in the discussion.  We hope you enjoy Chris' story as much as Marc and Al did. As for the comment about SimpleFlight 2.7 and 3.0, we need your help in architecting a show that meets your requirements, anticipates your needs, and exceeds your expectations.  So please navigate to www.simpleflight.net/listener-survey.html to tell us what you want the SimpleFlight experience to be.  Thanks in advance.                             =============== We hope you enjoy listening as much as we love talking to others who share our passion for aviation.  Please subscribe to the Podcast via iTunes or your favorite broadcast source, and rate, review, and let us know what you think! BLUE SKIES and TAILWINDS!!!

Some 5 years ago, Al Waterloo started SimpleFlight Aviation Radio in his hotel room at OSH12.  The next week, he asked Marc Epner to join him, and together they grew the popularity of the show by broadcasting live, and connecting their listeners with amazing people doing amazing things in aviation.  At the end of 2016, Al could no longer make the commitment to the show, so he left it in Marc's hands as he moved on in his aviation career.   While the show has continued to gain popularity, Al has continued his own growth as a successful sales rep for Cirrus Aircraft.  Join us as Rhonda and Marc talk with Al about life after SimpleFlight.  The three discuss his transition from airline pilot, to instructor/mentor, to sales professional, and even to husband. It was great to reconnect with Al, and we know our listeners will whole heartedly agree.  As Al always said... "It's AWESOME!" =============== We hope you enjoy listening as much as we love talking to others who share our passion for aviation.  Let us know what you think! BLUE SKIES and TAILWINDS!!!

You’ve undoubtedly heard of a stabilized approach and know it’s helpful to have one prior to landing. But many pilots don’t know all of the elements of a stabilized approach, or the potential expense of an unstable approach. Last year, two pilots I know dug deep into their wallets to pay for damage resulting from landings that followed unstable approaches. Both considered going around, but didn’t. The pilots of an IFR charter fight into Akron, Ohio in November 2015 weren’t so lucky; everyone died after their unstable approach. So what is a stabilized approach, and why does it matter? Cirrus Aircraft’s Flight Operations Manual gives a good description. It says: “A stabilized approach is characterized by a constant angle and constant rate of descent approach profile ending near the touch-down point. Stabilized approach criteria apply to all approaches including practice power-off approaches.“ It goes on to say that for VFR landings, an “approach is considered stabilized when all of the following criteria are achieved by 500' AGL: Proper airspeed, Correct flight path, Correct aircraft configuration for phase of flight, Appropriate power setting for aircraft configuration, Normal angle and rate of descent, Only minor corrections are required to correct deviations. A go-around must be executed if the above conditions are not met, and the aircraft is not stabilized by 500' AGL.” This episode contains lots of tips to help you consistently fly stable approaches every time you fly the traffic pattern, including tips for long, straight-in approaches, which often lead to unstable approaches. After an absolutely amazing fall, Chicago reminded us that Winter can hit at any time.  Coming off a 12" snowfall yesterday, it reminded Marc of the implications for pilots across the northern latitudes.  And its not just about preheating your engine.  Pilot's have the responsibility for considering the effect of cold and snow on the entire airplane, as well as taxiway and runway conditions.  And how about the impending weather, and in the case of an off airport landing, is the plane equipped to keep the pilot safe until help arrives?  Join with Marc as he discussed those very topics.  In the end, your airplane and your family will thank you for your preparedness for Winter Operations. Marc also talked about the retirement of Mike Ragsdale, a 37 year veteran behind the yoke at American Airlines.  A friend, a mentor, and as professional as they come, Mike will miss flying, his passengers, and the MD-80.  But maybe not as much as they will miss him.  Capt. Rags has not been in a GA airplane in 37 years.  It'll be fun to get him back to where it all started.  Stay tuned for the report on his reaction!!! With Winter upon us, Marc also asked the listeners what they would want as a gift.  If you could pick any item out of Sporty's catalog, what would it be?  Old School?  New School?  Expensive?  Useful?  Send us your thoughts and we'll pick up the conversation next time. Congrats to Al for his new position at Cirrus Aircraft. Blue Skies and Tailwinds!
