Original Release Date: Monday 3 November 2025    Description:   After a cold open wherein Phil sets the stage, the show gets started in mid-conversation as frequent contributor Jon Lawlor shares some of his thoughts about Aziz Ansari's Good Fortune. The topic then turns to Paul Thomas Anderson's 2002 film Punch-Drunk Love with particular emphasis paid to the way Anderson used music while shooting the film. This leads to Dean explaining the ways on-set music would be used in the silent film era, and how something called “click tracks” would be used in animation. In 2022 the great actor Stellan Skarsgard suffered a stroke and yet has been able to continue acting. The ways this has been achieved get discussed. The current heist picture The Mastermind from master filmmaker Kelly Reichardt is foremost in Phil's thoughts, specifically why, despite universal critical praise, the film is being mostly hated by moviegoers, most of whom have seen it in multiplexes. Phil also shares with Dean and Jon the new set of questions he asks himself, and answers in writing, each night before bed.

Then, Phil will discuss the long career of the great cinematic surrealist Luis Buñuel and take a deep dive into one particular masterpiece of his, the 1950 Los Olividados ("The Young and the Damned"). Buñuel's famous collaborations with Catherine Deneuve will lead Phil and Dean to discuss this legendary star's almost unparalleled status as the "face" of 1960s cinema. Jacque Demy's singular The Umbrellas of Cherbourg gets celebrated as a result. If Ms. Deneuve was NOT the face of global cinema at that time, then that title belonged to the late, great Claudia Cardinale, who gets remembered in "Celebrity Deaths".

Original Release Date: Monday 29 September 2025    Description:   Because Phil is on the road, tending to family matters, this week's show was pre-recorded last week and much of the episode is dedicated to discussing two icons: The historic landmarked Mayan Theatre in downtown Los Angeles closed its doors for good on September 14, and the great leading man, filmmaker, and supporter of the arts and the environment, Robert Redford, left the stage on September 16. Dean and Phil do a deep dive into his career and accomplishments and put his 1974 starring vehicle The Great Gatsby under the microscope. This leads to a discussion of lead characters, often seen as heroes, who suffer the delusions caused by their own fantasies. Such characters include Holly Martins in The Third Man and Rick in Casablanca. The dangers of fantasy prove the perfect segue way to Phil's thoughts upon finally having watched James Gunn's Superman. Finally, things wrap up, in this jumbo installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, with a devilishly haunting, and rather delightfully macabre 1964 suspense picture from Japan, Onibaba.

Original Release Date: Monday 19 May 2025    Description:   If you are interested in movies, movie making, or the movie business, you are going to find this week's show fascinating. Dean and Phil do deep dives into the cinematic delights brought to us by the Marx Brothers, the Canadian films produced under that country's 100-percent Capital Cost Allowance tax shield for investors, Jon Voight's plan to save Hollywood and the wildly different reactions to that plan within the industry, the ways the smash hit Sinners might change the economics of the biz, and the just-commenced 78th Cannes Film Festival (including one apparent all-time masterpiece that made its debut as well as a “secret” documentary about the Red Hot Chili Peppers). As if that weren't enough, your friends in podcasting go overtime to remember two impactful filmmakers, an Oscar-winning makeup artist, a beloved big screen “tough guy”, and a prolific child star of the 1930s and 40s.

Original Release Date: Monday 12 May 2025    Description:   Phil is back from Fort Worth, Texas, and has a Logan's Run location story to share with Dean. Phil also regales Dean with the story behind a delicious cocktail at the Grand Hotel in Oslo (named in “honor” of pop icon Madonna). Dean and Phil try to make sense of Jon Voight's plans to "save" Hollywood and how the President seized on those plans while probably misunderstanding them completely and/or intentionally. Meanwhile, "Sinners" might end up affecting real change in the film business and your friends in podcasting will discuss how. One of the all-time great actors, William Holden, and one of the all-time great actresses, Barbara Stanwyck, get discussed through the prism of two films: Executive Suite and Stella Dallas, and THE all-time greatest film (according to the 2022 Sight and Sound poll) also gets analyzed. This film is celebrating its 50th anniversary and so the conversation turns to other films of the era, including, perhaps, the greatest of all Francis Coppola films (and no, we're not talking about The Godfather Part II).

Original Release Date: Monday 14 April 2025    Description:   This week's episode finds Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness in fine form, discussing this year's Oscar-winning animated feature Flow, how it was made, and why actual cats might be enjoying it! The "Lawsuit of the Week" returns, and it is a rather astounding one involving a once Oscar-nominated filmmaker. Phil and Dean both relate to a recent Substack post by one of Phil's favorite journalists entitled, "We Are Schrödinger's Cat". You will find out why. Dean learns some very cool things about the Helsingør locale where he was married, including about a (rather legendary, though rarely-seen) version of Hamlet entirely shot there and about the World War II "underground railroad" operation run through there! The Scandinavian countries are very much on Phil's mind. Dean and Phil discuss how high those countries rank on the list of "happiest" countries and how low the USA ranks. Two recent Scandinavian horror films (this past year's Oscar-nominated The Girl with the Needle and the 2021 supernatural thriller The Innocents) both get reviewed, and the world's first open-air museum, the Norsk Folkemusuem, gets described. Finally, Phil tips his hat to the success of the just-completed season 3 of "The White Lotus", while Dean grabs his popcorn and pours his wine and sits down to start season 1!

"Actionable goals build. It's a mountain—recovery is a mountain. Think about the stops on that mountain that you need to make to get to the top.”   Millie Paladino had a successful, relatively injury-free collegiate career in running at West Virginia University and then Providence College, where she ran distances from 800 meters to 3,000 meters and was an all-American in the mile.   She turned pro and joined Team New Balance, and in 2021, made the final in the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in the 5,000 meters. But in the lead-up, a slowly developing injury began worsening, until in 2023 she had extensive surgery to correct a problem called Haglund's deformity, a bony growth on the heel that can damage the Achilles tendon.   Her recovery was longer than anticipated, changing her goals and challenging her spirit. But even on the more difficult days, Millie found ways to show up for her teammates and herself, developing a whole new appreciation for the person she was off the track. She invested in her relationships and even went back to school for urban planning (tune in to her about her cool running-related school project!).   Resources/links: Millie's Instagram Download the video for The Injured Athletes Club Recovery Summit: The Athlete's Toolkit A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast!
