Newt talks with Patrick McLaughlin, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he leads the QuantGov analytics project focusing on regulations. McLaughlin discusses the growth of regulatory requirements from 400,000 restrictive terms in 1970 to 1.1 million today, highlighting the economic friction and opportunity costs associated with regulatory accumulation. He estimates that if regulations had been held constant since 1980, the U.S. economy could be 25% larger by 2012, equating to a $4 trillion increase. They also discuss the impact of the Supreme Court's decision to end Chevron deference, which previously allowed agencies to interpret statutes with significant discretion. Their conversation concludes with an examination of Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin's successful regulatory reforms, which include a 25% reduction in regulatory inventory and the use of AI for cost-benefit analysis, setting a new standard for regulatory management.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

PODCAST INTRO: Life is our personal journey, filled with unexpected turns, challenges, and moments of profound revelation. For my guest, Melissa McLaughlin, a teacher turned author, her journey of faith has been marked by both struggle and transformation, ultimately leading her to a deeper relationship with Christ. Melissa's story is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and the profound impact of God's word in our lives. Melissa grew up in a Christian household, surrounded by love and the teachings of the Bible. Her early life experiences, including growing up with a brother who had special needs, and that inspired her to become a teacher. For 28 years, she dedicated her life to educating children, driven by a passion for learning and problem-solving. However, life threw her a curveball when health issues forced her into an unexpected early retirement. Faced with excruciating physical pain and the loss of a career she loved, Melissa found herself questioning God's plan for her life. In the midst of physical pain, losing the career that filled her day and becoming dependent on her husband and others, Melissa discovered that her identity was not rooted in her career, accomplishments or abilities but in her relationship with God. Through prayer and reflection, she realized that God was using her hardships to peel back layers of self-reliance and pride, revealing her true identity as a child of God. This revelation brought about a different type of pain and true to God's way of healing us, it was also beautifully transformative, leading her to a deeper understanding of her faith and purpose. As God moves Melissa away from teaching He opens a new door for her to be an author. Her first book, "In Dark of Night, When Words Fail, Voice of Jesus, Pray for Me," was born out of her personal struggle with prayer. Through the power of scripture-based prayers, Melissa found her voice and a new way to connect with God. Her latest book, "The Whole Bible Devotional," offers readers a 66-day reading plan that highlights the presence of Jesus throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. This devotional is designed to help readers see the Bible as a cohesive narrative and to deepen their relationship with God. Melissa's story is a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, God is at work, using our struggles to draw us closer to Him. Her journey illustrates the importance of clinging to faith and finding solace in the power of scripture. As she shares her experiences, Melissa encourages others to hold on to Jesus, trusting that He can bring beauty from ashes and transform our lives in ways we never imagined. Active transportation advocates constantly get accused of waging a "war on cars." But when you look around our communities, it sure looks more like we're in the middle of a war on walking and biking — and the wrong side is winning. In today's episode of The Brake, we sat down with Dr. Tepi McLaughlin, who co-authored of a provocative new paper that argues it's time to name the “enemies of physical activity” and dismantle policies they push, rather than just focusing on the additive benefits of building more sidewalks and bike lanes. And along the way, we talk about some of the hidden ways that corporations and policymakers have made non-automotive transportation so dangerous and rare, and what we can do to change it.
Evangelize is a big word. We call ourselves evangelicals in the Christian faith, but only three times does it occur on the pages of Scripture. Interestingly, Philip is the only person, the one and only person, who gets the unique designation of evangelist.Philip, because of his willingness to the spirit, because of his boldness for the gospel, because of his love for people, he is used by God for one of the most significant moments in the entire Bible. Some churches are known for their songs and their worship band, some churches are known for their pastors and their preaching, and some are known for their strategy and their branding. What if we, as Elevate City Church, were known as the people who just couldn't stop talking about Jesus? Some of us need to follow in the footsteps of Philip and be bold, while others of us need to receive the gospel and be baptized! 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south[d] to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth.33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.”34 And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.Acts 8:26-40We'd love for you to subscribe to our channel and turn on notifications to get updates on our latest content and resources that will help more people know Jesus and people know Jesus more.GIVE : We believe that generosity is golden. In an era of globalized education, where ideals of freedom and inquiry should thrive, an alarming trend has emerged: foreign authoritarian regimes infiltrating American academia. In Authoritarians in the Academy, Sarah McLaughlin exposes how higher education institutions, long considered bastions of free thought, are compromising their values for financial gain and global partnerships. This groundbreaking investigation reveals the subtle yet sweeping influence of authoritarian governments. University leaders are allowing censorship to flourish on campus, putting pressure on faculty, and silencing international student voices, all in the name of appeasing foreign powers. McLaughlin exposes the troubling reality where university leaders prioritize expansion and profit over the principles of free expression. The book describes incidents in classrooms where professors hesitate to discuss controversial topics and in boardrooms where administrators weigh the costs of offending oppressive regimes. McLaughlin offers a sobering look at how the compromises made in American academia reflect broader societal patterns seen in industries like tech, sports, and entertainment. Meticulously researched and unapologetically candid, Authoritarians in the Academy: How the Internationalization of Higher Education and Borderless Censorship Threaten Free Speech (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2025) is an essential read for anyone who believes in the transformative power of education and the necessity of safeguarding it from the creeping tide of authoritarianism.
