This week we're talking with our good friend Adam Crews of Tennessee about how he found success on a great public land buck during a late season "secondary rut" hunt in Kentucky. Adam breaks down his thought process going into this short 2 day out of state hunt, telling us what he was looking for & what sign he was keying in on that ultimately lead to him putting an arrow in a great buck. It's no secret that the month of November is a magical time for deer hunters in most of the country. It's the likely time of the year that most of us are putting in for vacation to have the best odds of killing a mature buck when he is most vulnerable.  There's no doubt that it can be your best chance, however, December shouldn't be overlooked. There have been many studies about what is known as the secondary rut that would typically fall 28 days after the primary rut. These studies have narrowed down a lot of the rut action to one of two things: 1. Does that have not been bred yet, and 2. yearling/doe fawns that are coming into sexual maturity later in the season. As Adam experienced, this time of the year can be just as productive, and in some cases more productive than the primary rut. However, we just decided to grind it out and hit a different piece of public land that we weren't planning to hunt. We dodged tornados, sat through monsoons, soaked from head to toe... but these crappy conditions may have been exactly what helped Adam kill the big buck in the mid day. This week we are chatting with one of my favorite people in the whole entire world, Adam Crews! Adam became one of my closest friends in high school. Many days were spent playing football and getting into shenanigans together. Recently, he began working out and running, focusing on reclaiming his health. In this episode he talks about the why and the how of his fitness journey. He also happens to be an incredible high school Agriculture teacher with an abundance of really awesome knowledge of the outdoors. As a fellow teacher, I wanted to dig into some of the lessons, stories, and misadventures of his teaching career. Including what has to be the worst first day of teaching EVER....don't want to spoil anything, but it involves a cow, a fence, and his poor knee. We dive into GPS whitetail deer tracking studies with respected biologists, looking at how weather affects deer movement. You may be shocked at what they have to say about it. We also talk to experienced hunters about how weather affects their hunting strategies and how this information will affect them in the future.  Part one begins with Spencer Neuharth of Rut Fresh and the Wired to Hunt Rut Radio. Next up is our own Adam Crews with how weather affects his hunting. He is followed by Will Brantley, the hunting editor at Field and Stream and Outdoor Life and Jeff Gienke of the Hunting Beast. Then we look at GPS tracking studies with Dr. Bronson Strickland of the MSU Deer Lab and Dr. Stephen Webb of the Noble Institute. Their observations may totally change when and where you hunt. Part 2 will continue the series with Dr Duane Diefenbach of the Penn State Deer Forest Study Group and Lindsay Thomas Jr., editor of Quality Whitetails magazine and communications director at the QDMA.  For a different perspective we talk to the Mad Scientist of deer hunting, Mark Drury, about how weather impacts his hunting strategies. Finally we will wrap up the series by circling around to the hunters we spoke with at the beginning to see if this will impact the way they hunt.
