Dr. Bronson Strickland is the foremost authority in whitetail deer research right. He is also our friend. Over the years we have had a great relationship with Bronson centered around the mutual love for whitetail deer and a desire to properly manage habitat in a way that maximizes the overall herd health as well as antler production. On this episode we will be talking about summer foodplots and deer nutrition. We also discuss Bronson's transition from MSU to private consulting. He and Mitt Warldaw along with some of the best consultants in the country have formed Wildlife Investments. In case you are just getting into hunting and habitat management, here is a short bio on Dr. Strickland: Bronson Strickland holds BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in wildlife biology and management from the University of Georgia, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Mississippi State University. He has been a co-director of the MSU Deer Lab since 2006 where he researched white-tailed deer biology and management and habitat management. Bronson's strengths are buck population management and the habitat management techniques used to promote the production and harvest of the best bucks. Bronson is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and was given the Al Brothers Deer Manager of the Year Award by the Quality Deer Management Association in 2019, the Lee Gladfelter Memorial Award by the Pope & Young Club in 2019, and the Joe Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Deer Association in 2024. https://wildlifeinvestments.com/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61553479625266
In this episode Natasha Neary, Luke Resop, Steve Demarais, and Bronson Strickland discuss the MSU Deer Lab's recent analyses that disentangle the intricate relationship between buck movement and weather conditions. They use various metrics of deer activity, like movement rates and bedding percentages, and control for time of day and rut phase to isolate any additive effects of weather conditions. Does a cold front get bucks on their feet and cause them to be more active during daylight hours? Enjoy! Bronson Strickland is arguably one of the leading extension deer biologists in the entire country. Robbie and Bronson used to be in the same Wildlife and Fisheries department at Mississippi State University, and so Bronson was invited onto the show by Robbie for this special second installment of our CWD Series to explore some of the major questions around the management of white-tailed deer with Chronic Wasting Disease. With this series we wanted to explore first the private land owners perspective (Doug Duren) on CWD, and then talk to an extension biologist and their landscape level purview of the issue and management implications around it. For this episode we traveled to Starkville Mississippi to sit down with Dr. Bronson Strickland of Mississippi State Universities Deer Lab about their recent deep dive into GPS data! MSU took a hard look at the data around buck movement and how it is influenced by BOTH moon phase and moon position. This is a fascinating episode that you will not want to miss! We discuss: Moon phase vs moon position and the theories about how each effect buck movement Narrowing down GPS data to look at buck movement, SPECIFICALLY at major and minor movement times according to moon calendars The VERY surprising percentage of bucks that are bedded down at any given time of day Is the red moon theory fact or fiction? What most hunters think when it comes to the moon Does moon phase or moon position make one day better than another for deer hunting? (and if so, how?) The data around overhead/underfoot moon times and how bucks react to it and TONS more! In this conversation, Dan Johnson and Bronson Strickland discuss various aspects of deer research, including the impact of moon phases on deer movement, the transition of roles within the Deer Lab, and the funding sources for wildlife research. They delve into the complexities of scientific studies, particularly a comprehensive analysis of moon phases and their effects on deer behavior, ultimately concluding that moon phases do not significantly impact deer movement. The discussion also touches on the importance of curiosity in research and the need for hunters to rely on scientific evidence rather than conventional wisdom. In this conversation, Bronson Strickland and Dan Johnson delve into the psychological and environmental factors affecting deer movement, particularly focusing on the placebo effect, the impact of weather, and the significance of cold fronts during hunting seasons. They explore how beliefs and perceptions can influence behavior, the complexities of weather patterns, and the nuances of deer activity in relation to temperature changes. The discussion highlights the importance of scientific research in understanding animal behavior and offers insights for hunters looking to optimize their strategies based on environmental conditions. Takeaways: Bronson Strickland is semi-retired but remains active in deer research. Transitioning roles in research requires careful planning and consideration. Funding for wildlife research often comes from state wildlife agencies and private donations. The moon phase study was extensive, involving detailed analysis of deer movement. Results showed minimal impact of moon phases on deer behavior. Hunters should focus on scientific evidence rather than myths. Curiosity drives research and problem-solving in wildlife management. Private funding plays a crucial role in supporting specific research projects. Conventional wisdom about moon phases can mislead hunters. At this point in the deer season, all serious whitetail hunters have two important questions to answer: When will that target buck move? And where will he go? To answer these questions, we can use recent and historic trail camera data plus traditional woodsmanship skills and good old hunter's intuition. But it also helps to have an understanding of the bigger picture. And for that, you can't beat GPS collar data from Dr. Bronson Strickland. Strickland is a co-director of the Mississippi State University Deer Lab, and a certified wildlife biologist. Through the Deer Lab, he conducts research that's important for deer science but also has management and hunting implications. This episode is brought to you by Moultrie. This week we are joined in studio by one of our favorite guests, Dr. Bronson Strickland, for a lively discussion on whitetails. Bronson also brought Moriah Boggess, a brilliant young Deer Biologist who works with him at Wildlife Investments where they work with landowners to implement habitat management plans. We ask them both to help explain what Gamekeepers can be doing right now to influence herd health and antler development. We discuss habitat enhancements, forest stand improvement, mineral pros and cons, supplemental feeding, warm season plantings, antler genesis, shed hunting and clover performance. We also ask whether we are in the good old days for whitetails or if they are behind us? We appreciate their perspective and we think you will as well. Listen, Lean and Enjoy. This week we have Dr. Bronson Strickland of the Mississippi State Deer Lab discussing their recent publication on whitetail buck movements. We talk about the rut, moon phases, hunting pressure, vegetation management and notions the old timers trusted that have now been debunked by science. You can't really argue with GPS collars. Dudley said it's our best deer discussion to date. It's a lively conversation that will make you think. Listen, Learn and Enjoy! This week we are joined by Dr. Bronson Strickland of the Mississippi State Deer Lab and he explains deer anomalies. Occasionally at the skinning rack we notice things about our deer that make us wonder everything from what is that, to, is the meat good to eat? Luckily, Bronson knows all and explains it all without getting too gross. You'll hear about arterial worms, nasal bots, cutaneous fibroma, brain abscess, Bullwinkle syndrome, liver flukes, louse flies and more. It's an interesting discussion and information that will make you appreciate the white-tailed deer a little bit more. Bronson also brings his own trivia question and attempts to stump us. Dr. Strickland is a professor at MSU and a host of the Deer University Podcast. He graduated from UGA with a bachelor's in forest resources, master's from Texas A&M - Kingsville and a doctorate degree from MSU. I love these discussions on deer biology and behavior. Topics include: 1. Buck bedding habits. 2. How detrimental are prolonged breeding seasons (unbalanced sex ratios) to a bucks health and future antler development. 3. Fawns who hit a heat cycle……..pros & cons. 4. Receptive doe discussion…… 5. Buck movement in high density areas. 6. Doe group movement during the rut.....feeding habit changes? 7. Doe calls / sounds during breeding season. When and why. 8. Buck grunts / sounds…..how, when, why….. 9. Rattling..... Please follow Mississippi State University Deer Lab on all social channels. They publish incredibly resourceful data for hunters and landowners.
Today I'm joined by my good buddy Dr. Bronson Strickland of Mississippi State University Deer Lab. Dr. Strickland and his team are always performing whitetail research to better understand their worlds - in today's episode we're diving into scrape research. What I like most about talking with Dr. Strickland is he can articulate things we may see as hunters but not fully understand. While keeping facts at the forefront, shedding light on hunting myths or adding validity to hunter observation. As a hunter and a deer biologist, he's well positioned to understand the desires of hunters, while taking an scientific approach to understanding the animals we love to chase. - thanks for listening. On today's episode of The Exodus Podcast, we are back in the studio talking with renowned whitetail biologist and host of the Deer University Podcast Dr. Bronson Strickland. Bronson has devoted years to studying whitetails and has helped the hunting industry as a whole expand what they knew or thought they knew about whitetails. We discuss: Mature bucks are not always nocturnal Bucks are active and on their feet before sunset, but are most frequently observed on food plots around an hour after sunset Bucks daylight behavior depends on their food source's proximity Mature bucks may cover less ground during the rut Beating a deer's nose entirely is nearly impossible Understanding the complexity of buck movement and the role of wind direction Whitetails are adaptable and conditioned to respond to stimuli for survival Mature bucks may exhibit individual behavior based on their upbringing and experiences Two-thirds of bucks have a sedentary personality, while one-third are mobile Mobile bucks can be further classified as shifters or bouncers The October lull is not applicable in the South, where it is more accurate to consider the period before the rut Understanding the relationship between cover corridors and prevailing winds Data analysis reveals that there is no clear pattern for how bucks use wind direction The extent and position of the moon's influence on deer movements still remain uncertain And so much more! This week we welcome Drs. Dwayne Elmore and Bronson Strickland to school us all on aflatoxin. Aflatoxins are produced by a couple of species of fungi in the genus Aspergillus that can appear in a variety of situations, and when ingested can be harmful to the very birds and mammals we cherish. Our expert guests thoroughly explain aflatoxin, practices we can follow to help prevent it, what to do if we discover molded feed, and then offer some feed solutions that can help. Anyone that feeds corn or uses feed based attractants needs to pay attention and be informed. Respect the science and the game we love. Listen, Learn and Be a Responsible Gamekeeper. This week on the Gamekeepers podcast we welcome a pair of guests to sit between the turkeys and answer a lot of questions about white-tailed deer. Dr. Bronson Strickland and Dr. Steve Demarais of the Mississippi State Deer Lab join us and we talk about change. The change in the physiology of bucks from summer to fall, the change in the native forage and planted plots from summer to fall, and the change in antlers from velvet to hard-horned. We also discuss the importance of the mighty acorn to wildlife. Did you know that bucks will eat the velvet off their own and another bucks antlers? That surprised us. This week our hometown hero and brilliant biologist, Dr. Bronson Strickland, joins us once again where we discuss forage plantings for our favorite cervid, the white-tailed deer. We ask a lot of questions including what we need to be planting, vs. what we want to plant. Bronson also brought a list of trivia-style deer related questions to ask us, which was loads of fun. One question about how many calories a lactating doe needs per day really shocked us! At the end we have a hair-raising discussion with an avid hunter and shed-hunter, named Laurian, who was recently stalked and attacked by a mountain lion for over a half mile out in Utah.
