Welcome back to another episode of the WhitetailDNA Podcast! On today's episode, we sit down with Nathan Nelson of Still Water Outdoors to talk about the art and grind of tracking bucks in the snow on public land. Nathan shares how his passion for tracking first began, how that obsession eventually grew into filming and starting Stillwater Outdoors, and the unique challenges that come with tracking down big woods bucks in the harsh conditions of northern Wisconsin. We dive into how he identifies big buck tracks from the rest, and how to tell fresh tracks from old tracks. Nathan explains the ideal snow and weather conditions for successful tracking and how to approach each track. He also recounts memorable encounters from this past season that highlight both the highs and lows of hunting on the ground. Lastly, the guys dive into hunting over bait and why it isn't nearly as effective as many people might think. If you're curious about woodsmanship, late-season strategy, and learning deer behavior, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Enjoy the show! It's Christmas Eve Eve…aka FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US! Bust out your metal pole & air some grievances with all the people who have disappointed you this year. Started the morning with the Tuesday song and some grievances of our own. In the news, there was no Powerball winner again last night, a recall on a pain-relieving ointment sold nationwide at both Walmart & Target, and the Wisconsin teacher who sexually assaulted an 11 year-old student gets sentenced. In sports, we recapped last night's MNF matchup between the 49ers & Colts, took a look at this week's schedule, and also talked about the upcoming College Football Bowl games. Plus, the Badgers men's basketball team got back on track with a win over Central Michigan last night, while the Bucks try to get a win tonight. Speaking of the NFL schedule, we took a look at how we did with our Pigskin Picks for Week 16, and since Jean won't be here tomorrow, we made our Week 17 picks today. Grant Bilse of the Wisco Sports show joined us just after 8am to discuss his holiday plans and also talk a bit about the Packers devastating few weeks. We talked about what's on TV today/tonight and we also let you know what's new on New Release Tuesday. Cool story about a chef at a seafood restaurant in Florida that saved a regular customer's life after he stopped showing up. A recent study revealed that 90% of people experience "work meeting hangovers". What's a sound that angers you the instant you hear it? And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a woman who was allegedly eaten by a shark, a really bad date, a #FloridaWoman who exposed herself to several children, and a school in NY that installed a "time-out" box.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Get Goat Wise | Homestead Livestock, Raising Goats, Chickens, Off-grid living
Breeding season success doesn't start when the buck goes in—it starts weeks earlier with intentional management decisions around feed, body condition, mineral, and water. In this episode, I'm walking through how we prepare our goat herd for breeding season on our ranch, and why flushing is less about grain and more about timing and rising energy intake. I explain how our does typically come off pasture somewhat thin due to declining forage quality and demands of lactation, how we use a gradual hay-based recovery phase after weaning, and why we don't rush into flushing too early. You'll hear how we intentionally set the stage so that a modest energy increase 2–3 weeks before breeding actually produces a favorable reproductive response. We also dig into forage-based flushing using high-quality hay, why mineral intake is often the hidden limiting factor in breeding success, and how winter water access quietly controls feed intake, mineral consumption, and overall herd health. If breeding hasn't gone the way you expected in the past, this episode will help you evaluate the foundational pieces before blaming genetics or the buck. In This Episode, I Cover: What flushing really is—and why it's primarily an energy strategy, not a grain strategy Why flushing needs to start 2–3 weeks before breeding, not the day the buck shows up How our does come off pasture thin from limited forage and lactation—and why that matters Our post-weaning feeding strategy to gradually rebuild body condition without overdoing it Why flushing works best when does are moderate condition or slightly thin, not fat How forage-based flushing works with high-quality hay like sainfoin Why intake—not just feed quality—determines whether flushing is effective The critical role of mineral intake in estrus expression, conception, and early pregnancy Why bucks are often overlooked in mineral programs—and how we handle that The trace minerals most closely tied to reproductive success How winter water access limits feed and mineral intake Why water is often the most overlooked nutrient in breeding prep Signs that water intake may be holding your herd back reproductively How consistency—not perfection—sets the stage for a successful breeding season Key Takeaways: Breeding success starts weeks before breeding with intentional preparation Flushing works because of rising energy intake, not because of grain Gradual post-lactation recovery sets the stage for an effective flushing response High-quality forage can support flushing when intake truly increases Mineral intake—not just availability—can make or break reproductive success Bucks need mineral too, even when feeders don't cooperate Without adequate winter water, goats won't eat enough feed or mineral Water is often the limiting nutrient in cold-weather breeding preparation Consistency and timing matter more than aggressive feeding Related Episodes: 14 | When Should My Goats Kid? To wrap things up, we preview the Milwaukee Bucks upcoming road trip, breaking down key matchups, potential pitfalls, and what the Bucks need to prove away from home as they look for consistency.

Elsewhere in sports, Week 16 in the NFL kicked off last night with a thrilling win in overtime for the Seahawks, the Bucks lost to the Raptors last night, the Badger volleyball team's run to a championship came to an end at the hands of Kentucky last night, and the Badger men's basketball team takes on Villanova tonight in Milwaukee. Victor Wembanyama doesn't even need to start to completely flip a game on its head. On this episode of The Alley Oop Basketball Show on DLS Hoops, Juju Gotti and Trysta Krick break down how Wemby lifted the Spurs just by coming off the bench — blocking everything in sight, dominating the paint, and casually stuffing the stat sheet like it's light work. The hosts also dig into the growing tension between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks — is this the beginning of a real breakup, or just another NBA power struggle brewing behind the scenes? And finally… Steph Curry might be the only superstar in the league who can sell shoes while barely wearing his own. Nate and Danny tackle Western Conference mailbag questions from the Dallas Mavericks through the LA Lakers, digging into star-trade calculus, emerging young players, and which contenders really scare OKC and Denver.Dallas Mavericks — 0:55Is Max Christie's 65% true shooting for real, and if/when his shooting regresses, can he still be a starter on a championship team? How should Dallas value and time a potential Anthony Davis trade—what kind of package is “enough,” how much does the extension/player option risk matter, and is it better to move him now or wait?Given their place in the standings and draft-lottery odds, how low can Dallas realistically fall in the West, and how much does that affect the urgency to trade Davis?Would a Trae Young–for–Anthony Davis swap make sense for either the Mavericks or the Hawks in terms of fit and direction? How does the Derek Lively–Cason Wallace–Dāvis Bertāns draft-night trade look 2.5 years later for both Dallas and OKC, and which side would you rather be on now?Denver Nuggets — 17:57How has Peyton Watson grown offensively, and is he finally ready to be a reliable playoff-rotation player? Why is Zeke Nnaji still getting minutes over DaRon Holmes—are the Nuggets trying to pump up Nnaji's trade value, or do they genuinely see him as the better fit? What are Denver's best and worst potential playoff matchups in the first two rounds (with OKC assumed as the 1-seed and off the board)?Golden State Warriors — 28:40As in so many recent seasons, the Warriors hit mid-December around .500—what's the single biggest factor that can actually turn their season around? Is there any realistic “retool” path where Golden State trades some of the youth to become a legitimate threat again in games where Steph drops 40+ (e.g., moving Pods/Kuminga plus picks for a real starter)? Is the fan criticism of Brandin Podziemski this year justified—how good is he actually and what are his limitations? How much faith should we have in the Warriors' front office to build another contender post-Steph based on their track record? What's the most likely resolution with Jonathan Kuminga—do the Warriors still see him as a core piece, or is he basically just flotsam matching salary at this point? With Steph still playing at an elite level but the team stuck in the middle, are the Warriors really in an intractable “can't blow it up / can't contend” quandary, or is the path forward actually straightforward?Houston Rockets — 44:17If Giannis becomes available, should the Rockets not go after him this season because of OKC's dominance and instead wait to add another star later, or is this exactly the kind of opportunity you must seize? How much better would Giannis actually make Houston in the next 2–3 years compared with just riding out growth with Alperen Şengün and the current core—and is a Şengün-for-Giannis framework ever worth it?Is a core trio of Amen Thompson–Şengün–Giannis really viable given their combined limitations, and if so, who becomes the odd man out long-term?Is Reed Sheppard being misused when he's just parked in the corner while others run the offense—are the Rockets wasting his on-ball skills by treating him like a pure 3-and-D guard?Including possible trades, who is the bigger playoff threat to the Thunder this year: the Spurs or the Rockets?LA Clippers — 53:52Do the Clippers' struggles this season help them at all when the league decides Kawhi Leonard's punishment, or is that totally irrelevant to discipline? How much of the Clippers' disaster season is real underlying weakness versus bad clutch luck and opponent shooting luck (teams bombing threes against them)? What is the most likely course of action for the Clippers at the trade deadline—could they or should they do any kind of “firesale” given they owe so many picks? In hindsight, did the Clippers have the worst offseason—essentially gifting Miami an All-Star-caliber Norman Powell while signing a washed Brook Lopez—and how badly did that set them back? What are the realistic odds the Clippers can claw back to the 10th seed and at least mildly salvage their season?LA Lakers — 1:04:21The Lakers' record is great but their net rating is mediocre—what are their biggest weaknesses or needs, and do they actually play well enough consistently to reach the West finals or NBA Finals? In the MVP discussion, did you underrate Luka Doncic compared with Giannis—if you swapped their team contexts (Luka on the Bucks, Giannis on the Lakers/Mavs), how would that affect their cases, especially when you account for defense? With LeBron driving less and spending more time on the perimeter, would the Lakers' offense be better if they used him more in the post/elbow or as a handoff hub instead of having him just initiate from outside?
