Support the podcast and keep it ad-free by visiting https://stevenwebb.uk and treating Steven to a coffee.Vulnerability is often perceived as a weakness, but in this episode, Steven Webb reframes it as a powerful aspect of our humanity that can be embraced with courage and wisdom. He shares his personal experiences, illustrating how vulnerability is an inherent part of life, from our dependence on others from birth to the challenges we face as we age. By acknowledging our vulnerabilities, we can open ourselves to growth and connection rather than fear and isolation. Steven emphasizes the importance of recognizing the various voices within us—such as fear, courage, and wisdom—that accompany our feelings of vulnerability. Ultimately, he encourages listeners to lean into their vulnerabilities, understanding that they can coexist with strength and bravery, leading to deeper personal insights and relationships.Stephen Webb delves into the often misunderstood concept of vulnerability, arguing that it is not only a universal trait but also a vital aspect of human connection and personal growth. He begins by emphasizing that everyone experiences vulnerability, whether it be through reliance on others in infancy or facing health challenges later in life. Through his personal experiences with paralysis and the ongoing need for assistance, Stephen illustrates the depth of vulnerability and how it can foster a sense of empathy and community. He invites listeners to reflect on their own vulnerabilities, framing them as opportunities for connection rather than obstacles to overcome.A significant theme in Stephen's discussion is the dual nature of vulnerability—the state of being vulnerable and the feelings associated with it. He highlights that while we may find ourselves in vulnerable positions, we do not always have to feel vulnerable. By identifying and amplifying the voices of courage and wisdom within us, we can navigate our fears and embrace our vulnerabilities with grace. Stephen's insights prompt listeners to consider what emotional voices they allow to dominate during moments of vulnerability and how shifting this perspective can lead to empowerment and resilience.Ultimately, Stephen encourages his audience to lean into their vulnerabilities, viewing them as pathways to deeper relationships and personal transformation. He concludes with a call to action, urging listeners to embrace their vulnerabilities as a part of their journey rather than something to shy away from. This episode serves as a poignant reminder that vulnerability is not a weakness, but rather a strength that can lead to profound growth and connection with others.Takeaways: Vulnerability is an inherent part of being human, and we all experience it. Asking for help is one of the most courageous acts of vulnerability one can demonstrate. Vulnerability can be embraced as a positive trait, leading to personal growth and connection. Recognizing the different voices within us helps us navigate feelings of vulnerability effectively. When feeling vulnerable, we should also acknowledge voices of courage and wisdom that empower us. Embracing vulnerability allows for deeper relationships and a more authentic life experience.

In the summer of 1950, the physicist Enrico Fermi and some colleagues at the Los Alamos Lab in New Mexico were walking to lunch, and casually discussing flying saucers, when Fermi blurted out “But where is everybody?” He was not the first to pose the question, and the precise phrasing is disputed, but the mystery he was referring to remains compelling. We appear to live in a vast universe, with billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars, mostly surrounded by planets, including many like the Earth. The universe appears to be 13.7 billion years old, and even if intelligent life requires an Earth-like planet, and even if it can only travel and communicate at the speed of light, we ought to see lots of evidence of intelligent life. But we don't. No beams of light from stars occluded by artificial satellites spelling out pi. No signs of galactic-scale engineering. No clear evidence of little green men demanding to meet our leaders.Numerous explanations have been advanced to explain this discrepancy, and one man who has spent more brainpower than most exploring them is the always-fascinating Anders Sandberg. Anders is a computational neuroscientist who got waylaid by philosophy, which he pursues at Oxford University, where he is a senior research fellow.Topics in this episode include:* The Drake equation for estimating the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy* Changes in recent decades in estimates of some of the factors in the Drake equation* The amount of time it would take self-replicating space probes to spread across the galaxy* The Dark Forest hypothesis - that all extraterrestrial civilizations are deliberately quiet, out of fear* The likelihood of extraterrestrial civilizations emitting observable signs of their existence, even if they try to suppress them* The implausibility of all extraterrestrial civilizations converging to the same set of practices, rather than at least some acting in ways where we would notice their existence - and a counter argument* The possibility of civilisations opting to spend all their time inside virtual reality computers located in deep interstellar space* The Aestivation hypothesis, in which extraterrestrial civilizations put themselves into a "pause" mode until the background temperature of the universe has become much lower* The Quarantine or Zoo hypothesis, in which extraterrestrial civilizations are deliberately shielding their existence from an immature civilization like ours* The Great Filter hypothesis, in which life on other planets has a high probability, either of failing to progress to the level of space-travel, or of failing to exist for long after attaining the ability to self-destruct* Possible examples of "great filters"* Should we hope to find signs of life on Mars?* The Simulation hypothesis, in which the universe is itself a kind of video game, created by simulators, who had no need (or lacked sufficient resources) to create more than one intelligent civilization* Implications of this discussion for the wisdom of the METI project - Messaging to Extraterrestrial IntelligenceSelected follow-up reading:* Anders' website at FHI Oxford: https://www.fhi.ox.ac.uk/team/anders-sandberg/* The Great Filter, by Robin Hanson: http://mason.gmu.edu/~rhanson/greatfilter.html* "Seventy-Five Solutions to the Fermi Paradox and the Problem of Extraterrestrial Life" - a book by Stephen Webb: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-13236-5* The aestivation hypothesis: https://www.fhi.ox.ac.uk/aestivation-hypothesis-resolving-fermis-paradox/* Should We Message ET? by David Brin: http://www.davidbrin.com/nonfiction/meti.html

K2-18 B, an earth-like planet with water vapour is spotted 111 light years away. An interstellar object christened Oumuamua flies through our solar system exhibiting characteristics never seen before in an asteroid. Scientists discover intriguing radio wave emissions coming from Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the sun. These are just some of a growing number of observations that have scientists excited about proving the existence of alien life. Statistical probabilities support this view - the Kepler Space Telescope has identified billions of planets theoretically capable of supporting life. To meaningfully advance the science of astrobiology humanity needs to abandon the longstanding and pervasive view that we are alone in the universe. Skeptics say that given the immense age of the observable universe there should be some evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations, but instead all we hear and see is silence. These same scientists argue that the ability of a planet to make the jump from inanimate matter to life - known as abiogenesis - and then to stay alive and become intelligent - requires highly unlikely transitions. Earth and humans are special. Our existence represents an incredible fluke and the statistical probability of it happening elsewhere is all but impossible. In sum, we are alone. AJ and Matt attempt to answer the biggest mystery as we come up to Valentine's Day; why are we alone? Our home galaxy, the Milky Way, has been around for billions of years, and given how (relatively) quickly life was able to develop on Earth, it should be teeming with extra-terrestrial life. But despite that, we, as a species, have never seen conclusive evidence life, much less intelligent life, exists anywhere else, so what might be hiding it from view? Are they too far away, too alien, too stupid, too clever or are we really alone in the Universe? The possibilities are endless, but AJ and Matt discuss some of the main theories and argue about the best way to communicate with alien species and whether the Prime Directive is benevolent or racist. We dive into GPS whitetail deer tracking studies with respected biologists, looking at how weather affects deer movement. You may be shocked at what they have to say about it. We also talk to experienced hunters about how weather affects their hunting strategies and how this information will affect them in the future.  Part one begins with Spencer Neuharth of Rut Fresh and the Wired to Hunt Rut Radio. Next up is our own Adam Crews with how weather affects his hunting. He is followed by Will Brantley, the hunting editor at Field and Stream and Outdoor Life and Jeff Gienke of the Hunting Beast. Then we look at GPS tracking studies with Dr. Bronson Strickland of the MSU Deer Lab and Dr. Stephen Webb of the Noble Institute. Their observations may totally change when and where you hunt. Part 2 will continue the series with Dr Duane Diefenbach of the Penn State Deer Forest Study Group and Lindsay Thomas Jr., editor of Quality Whitetails magazine and communications director at the QDMA.  For a different perspective we talk to the Mad Scientist of deer hunting, Mark Drury, about how weather impacts his hunting strategies. Finally we will wrap up the series by circling around to the hunters we spoke with at the beginning to see if this will impact the way they hunt.

No signs of astro-engineering projects. No signatures of relativistic space travel. No obviously artificial electromagnetic waves, and so forth. And when you think of it, this is rather surprising. Or at least it was surprising to the ingenious physicist Enrico Fermi, who first drew attention to the matter.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In this episode Stephen expands on his own values and why it is emotionally important for him to feel an alignment with the business’s “higher purpose”.  This was originally subconscious in his early days with Laminex, but is now a significant factor in his decision making process. Even though Stephen comes from a corporate financial background - where the general public would think his agenda might be all about short term financial return, he tells a different story of “feeling good” about what the company does, and being “proud” of that when asked at a dinner party about what he does.  He speaks of his recent interaction with Scania trucks on how he would be interested in working with them, even though he would be on half the income of his previous employment. Key point is that it's not just about the money, values alignment and corporate purpose are important. This message aligns nicely with Steve Samson's interview in episode 20 “The Impact of Higher Purpose”. Lastly Stephen has some suggestions for updating a resume and the use of a leadership coach in that capacity - an example being Anthony Youd's email:anthony@leaderfit.com.au
