Traded twice before his 21st birthday, Sanderson thrived at his third club Geelong playing 199 games and winning the best and fairest in 2001. After a successful stint as a Cats assistant, Sanderson became Adelaide coach in 2012 leading the Crows into a preliminary final in his first year. 2 years later he was sacked despite having 2 years left on his contract. He would later return to Collingwood as an assistant coach under best mate Nathan Buckley
